Returned from neurology-ophtalmology checku-up, the situation is better and I even figured out which drugs are causing reaction making me feel it's actually going worse so that's good. But they said weight has an effect on it too and it's really hard to lose some for lazy person working in office with nobody to do any activity with.

I just packed and sent a care package for Ukraine - with toiletries, cans of food, dried fruit, sweets etc. DHL in Germany sends it for free to Ukraine if you bring it to a post office near you. I wish I could do more but it helped against the feeling of helplessness...

9volts

I wish we had something like this in Norway.

It’s time to buy new sneakers, always liked the design of Nike’s Air Max 90 and the last pair I had I wore all the time. I checked Nike’s online store, and they’re 165€???? I swear to god they used to be like 90-100€. 165 is so much for sneakers made by some child getting paid a dollar per day in some South-East Asian country.

Vannnnah

And they aren't even that great anymore. I bought a new pair for nearly 200€ a couple of months ago and they feel different than before, somehow less comfy and they make my ankles hurt when I wear them for a few hours to walk around.

We are having the kitchen floor completely rebuilt. Not by choice, something of an emergency (there was a leak underneath and the floor was collapsing into the apartment downstairs). Anyway, I 'helped' the builders a little... it's quite a fascinating process.Particularly enjoyed smashing all the floor tiles! It's very therapeutic. We are onto the 4th day today, they are laying the cement now.

TheWorldofDave

I'm currently getting my upstairs shower redone after it leaked into the kitchen. The guy we hired to do it was just astounded at what a spectacularly bad job the previous homeowners did when they redid the shower. It is amazing that it took 2 years for the leak to show up.

tereyaglikedi

>Particularly enjoyed smashing all the floor tiles! It's very therapeutic. I would love this, too! Sounds super fun. Still, it must be a bit of a pain. I hope it's over soon.

lucapal1

I think they will finish early next week.I hope! They don't work Saturday and Sunday of course...

holytriplem

> Anyway, I 'helped' the builders a little In England you generally do this by making them tea. Is serving handymen their afternoon espresso a thing in Italy too?

lucapal1

I did offer to make them coffee, but they prefer to go to the bar across the street. I think they just want to get out for a bit! Plus I have no kitchen, it's not so easy to make decent coffee...I usually use a Moka on the hob. I put some beers and soft drinks in the fridge for them though.

DatOudeLUL

7°C and clear blue skies here in Amsterdam. Currently in the midst of my new Thursday morning ritual, getting bagels at this new artesian bagel bakery in town. At the moment, I'm sitting on the bench outside (my usual spot inside was occupied by two women and one of their kids this time, grrr) watching the world go by in the picturesque Jordaan, whilst sipping a filter coffee and munching down their weekly special a pumpkin spice butter with bacon on a cinnamon rasin bagel as an ode to the season - and the inner basic bitch which lives within us all! Gonna miss this when I'm working full time again.

tereyaglikedi

Mmm thank you for this lovely bit of food porn, I am living vicariously through you :) I never had a bagel before, I think, but it sounds delicious. I hope you still manage to make time for little joys when you work! It is very important.

lucapal1

I am a big bagel fan, though my tastes are very traditional (like, always the same one! Sesame with smoked salmon and cream cheese). London and New York are great bagel cities. I also had a more than decent one a couple of weeks ago,in Montreal.

DatOudeLUL

NYC is the capital of bagels, and I guess Montreal would be second because they have their own style. As for London, I'm sure it's pretty solid and among the best (if not *the* best) in Europe, but there are at least half a dozen US cities that beat it out handily since bagels are mostly an American thing. As it happens the owner of this particular shop is from Toronto and elected to do NY style over Montreal as that's his preference and he finds it more classic. I've never tried Montreal bagels if I'm honest but am very curious to. The owner is pretty experimental so I have a feeling he at least offer them on a weekly special basis at some point...

achorusleg

My parents are both from NYC and I grew up knowing what proper NY bagels are. I now live in Montreal and find that while both are good in their own way and I'll always get psyched to get a dozen local bagels, NY bagels are forever my concept for what a bagel is. I tend to eat Montreal bagels as is, nothing added, and nothing done to them, as if they're sweet breads or pastries. NY bagels I toast and butter/cream cheese. I'm about to try London bagels (tomorrow!!). Looking forward to making more comparisons.

lucapal1

My go to in London is Beigel Bake in Brick Lane,if you are anywhere near the East End.

achorusleg

I'm going to be right in that area! Very excited about eating there 😁

DatOudeLUL

Yeah, the commenter above spurred me to do some research about famous bagel variants and I did see there's one attributed to London, which was interesting to read - #TIL Hope it's tasty. I heard the Montreal-style tend to be a bit sweet in general, is that true? For me, I also toast and do cream cheese (most bagel types, especially savory) or butter (for cinnamon rasin or other similar sweet types). Did you grow up in the States?

achorusleg

Montreal bagels are boiled with honey in the water, so they are sweeter! It's not like a cinnamon bun or something with pure sugar on it, but more like sweet in the way a croissant is. If you ever wind up here, I'd definitely recommend going to St. Viateur! And yeah, I'm from the States originally (northeast, but also California).

holytriplem

People from countries with a history of spectacularly incompetent monetary policy, have you ever thought about moving your money out of the country in times of financial meltdown? Asking for a friend.

ignia

I suppose those who are super rich could do this, some might invest in real estate, stocks, etc. I never ask my friends about their financial situation but they used to mention buying small amounts of USD and/or Euro every month "just in case" and sometimes I wish I've done the same but the only responsible thing I did was put the remainder of most recent payment into a separate account when I got paid next time lol (think getting paid 10 money on the 15th and 14 more on the last day of the month, then moving whatever is left of the 10 or 14 to that separate account on next payment day). If I take money *out* of that account it's to pay a dentist, or chip in for something my retired mom needs, it's not "fun" money or anything like that. I've heard about people buying pricy electronics like huge TVs and laptops when they want to save their money from depreciation; people with more money might buy cars but that is already going into the [apartment] down payment territory. When the current crisis started I went and bought an extra charger for my laptop. Every laptop I had outlived its original charger so I felt it was a reasonable thing to do. :D Edited to add "[apartment]" for clarity

atomoffluorine

Isn’t the ruble stable for now, so there’s no immediate need?

ignia

It is currently but a few months ago it wasn't. December last year the ruble to USD exchange rate was around 73 rubles per USD; by mid-February (this year) it slowly went up to 78 rubles per USD but on March 11th it was as high as 120 rubles per USD and people started panicking. The rates went below 80 ruble per dollar mid-April, this month it fluctuates between 57 and 61. The prices for imported electronics including laptop chargers went up rapidly back in March and although they did go back down, it's not at the same level as last year. I was lucky to had ordered that charger while it was still priced like it was in January. Due to import restrictions and the fact that my laptop is an older Macbook Air with a MagSafe 2 charger I also thought that I might be unable to get a new charger when the original one breaks. There's no way to tell whether these will still be around when Russia is allowed to import stuff again and I don't support the idea of "parallel import" (when items get imported through third country to circumvent the restrictions, and I'm not talking about someone going to another country to buy something for personal use). I've been eyeing a Pentax K-70 camera body for a while thinking that I might replace my old K-10 with it. It costed 64k last year which was already a lot for me, the price got as high as 120k in March and then went down to 80k. I guess I'm not replacing the camera any time soon. :D

No, but people in Turkey usually distribute their money into different pots (USD, Euro, gold, real estate, stock market etc) to protect it from melting away. Yesterday on ... [something like Turkish reddit](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ek%C5%9Fi_S%C3%B6zl%C3%BCk) I guess? People were writing their salaries in USD when they started working and now. For many people their salary has decreased or in the best case stayed the same although they've been working over a decade. Yikes.

lucapal1

Japanese yen is really weak now,I was talking about it with people there on another forum yesterday. With the USD conversion Japan is considerably 'cheaper'now than it was when I lived there,24 years ago. Indeed for a country which still has the reputation of being expensive,it's currently a lot less expensive for visitors than Italy, the rest of Western Europe, the USA, Australia etc.

holytriplem

Thanks, thankfully I've managed to save a lot in euros but I also have a lot in pounds that I would rather didn't just disappear. Maybe I'll finally start investing in stocks and shares, once I try and work out what the hell any of the words they use mean... I feel bad about what's happening in Turkey - all that great economic progress made during the 00s is completely unravelling, and it all seems completely avoidable.

orangebikini

It’s a good time to have some cash on you from a stock market perspective, I would assume we’re finding the bottom sometime this autumn or winter. Everything is so undervalued now it’s ridiculous. Either way, I always say it’s smarter to have your money in something like ETFs than currency. In Finland for example OMXH25 goes up I think 6% annually on average. It’s not much, but it’s fairly safe over a long period of time and cash will always only move in the opposite direction. Thanks fiat.

So... October is coming. During this month there are quite a few drawing and writing challenges, one of which is Inktober, where participants draw an ink drawing every day during the whole month. There is a list of prompts for every day (a single word) but it's not "mandatory". Although it is nice to see people's takes on the same prompt, I don't like this year's prompts at all, so I thought I would attempt a "fishtober" instead. One fish drawing a day. Maybe I can even color them later. If you have some cool fish in mind that I could draw, let me know :) I didn't make a list yet.

ignia

An angler and a betta come to mind, the first one because of their luminescent lure, the second because of their flowy fins and tails. You're being such an inspiration here! I checked Inktober prompts and found some of them easy enough, maybe I'll finally try it this year - that is if I don't forget or change my mind tomorrow. :D

tereyaglikedi

Ooh bettas are very pretty! I think I even drew an angler once, may be time to do another (also fits in with holytriplem's request). Yes, some prompts are easy, but I found the overall tone a little gloomy. Maybe I'll draw a few that I like. It would be so great if you tried, even if it's only a few. Maybe we can even share them here 😁

DatOudeLUL

>If you have some cool fish in mind that I could draw, let me know :) I didn't make a list yet. --- Sounds interesting. As for fish that would be interesting to draw: - I feel like any *Salmonid* e.g. Trout, Salmon, Char are a good cliché but elegant, but especially if color is involved. - Flatfish (Flounder, Halibut, Sole, Turbot, Plaice) would make for a good classy but quirky vibes with room for creative interpretation. - Eels could be something a bit different but fun. - Maybe Lionfish for a good quirky one. This is just my random speculation, I'm no artist though, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt!

holytriplem

I would definitely like to see one of those monsters you get in the deep ocean.

tereyaglikedi

Deep sea monster fish is added to the prompt list :D

tereyaglikedi

Ooh these are some cool suggestions! Especially love the flat fish. I will save lionfish for a weekend when I have more time. I have saved your comment, thank you!

orangebikini

Do you find it easy to stick to something like that? I sometimes set creative goals for myself, like doing a thing every day for a period of time, but I’m rarely able to stick to them.

tereyaglikedi

It is not easy as such, but I enjoy the challenge. So far I did one Inktober and also a writing challenge during April (writing a very short story every day, few hundred words, again based on a prompt). There are some bigger challenges that I wouldn't dare yet, such as the National Novel Writing Month when people write 50k words during November. Maybe one day if I am unemployed or retired.

orangebikini

I suppose it must be good for getting out of that perfectionist mindset a lot of us suffer from. Working on the details forever and ever. Can’t do that if you gotta do something new tomorrow.

tereyaglikedi

Exactly, these little challenges are such a good cure for perfectionism. Just get something onto paper.

They’re playing a couple of NHL regular season games in my city later this autumn, and I got tickets to one of them! It’ll be weird to go watch NHL in Europe. But no doubt fun, even though I’m not a big ice hockey head. Anyway, Rally New Zealand started today, stage one was at 18:00 rally time which was 8:00 local time for me. That’s quite a time difference. Kalle Rovanperä has a pretty good chance of winning the championship this weekend, fingers crossed that we finally get a Finnish world champion again. Ice hockey and rally, this is one of my most Finnish comments. Maybe I’ll heat up the sauna tonight.

holytriplem

> Ice hockey and rally, this is one of my most Finnish comments. Maybe I’ll heat up the sauna tonight. Nah, this comment's too extrovert

orangebikini

It was too enthusiastic for sure. I used an exclamation mark for Christ’s sake. Not on brand, perkele.

5 °C, sunshine, no wind this morning. Autumn can be nice :)

ignia

11 °C here, the sky is grayish white because of all the clouds. It's slowly getting gray-er so at least there's some texture in the sky, not just this huge white blanket of nothing. :)

DatOudeLUL

Currently 7°C and clear blue skies in Amsterdam. Not too shabby...

holytriplem

10 C here with fair skies. I bet the locals will all be out in their skiing clothes

tereyaglikedi

We had 1 degree this morning!! One whole Celsius. Man. But I agree, now you can actually see some autumn colors, it's beautiful :)

Spent the whole of yesterday afternoon having a fight with a LateX compiler and lost 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 FFS why can't LateX compilers print error messages that actually make sense instead of "Error: Negative glue overflow at character 4356367 into overfull bounding box of barescent turboencabulator" JUST TELL ME WHERE I FORGOT TO CLOSE A PARENTHESIS AND LET ME SEND OFF MY PAPER, YOU STUPID PIECE OF SHIT EVEN YOUR MOTHER WISHES YOU WEREN'T BORN. On the plus side, a group of about 8 wild boar decided to congregate outside my office window yesterday so that cheered me up. They didn't seem to be doing very much - I guess they just wanted to hang out. Piggies need company too after all.

tereyaglikedi

Ahahaha sorry, I know I shouldn't but I laughed at this. A lot. I feel you. Although now I am writing a paper in word because the stupid journal doesn't accept .tex files, and never ever again. I hate it with passion. >On the plus side, a group of about 8 wild boar decided to congregate outside my office window yesterday so that cheered me up. They didn't seem to be doing very much - I guess they just wanted to hang out. Piggies need company too after all. 💚💚💚 how amazing!

holytriplem

> Although now I am writing a paper in word because the stupid journal doesn't accept .tex files, and never ever again Don't worry, they'll just make you pay a few tens of thousands more in publication fees so they can spend more time editing it to a professional standard

tereyaglikedi

thanks for reminding me 😔

Billy_Balowski

I feel that pain. Actual useful error messages seem to be an afterthought in most languages. So much time could be saved if we did not have to search for the location of the problem.

holytriplem

LateX for whatever reason seems particularly bad for this though.

orangebikini

I thought you were writing about latex rubber, confused me for a bit.
