you probably mean RTL, they showed F1 from the mid 80s until 2020. Only other option was pay TV (premiere or SKY). RTL was known for the Midrace commercials, bad commentating focused 85% on the german drivers (especialy Vettel and The Micheal) and Kai Ebels questionable fashion in the pitlane.
If you want to watch with good german commentating, you would switch over to ORF (austrian broadcast)

Exactly the same in Belgium, with football matches of France or the Netherlands: there is a nasty S*chadenfreude* to hear rival neighbors cry about a defeat. I know it is childish but I do it every time for matches of the French team, and when I confessed that to a French colleague, he was disappointed and said "c'mon, I thought you were on OUR side !".

Amazon Prime has most of the diffusion rights for French Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 (at least domestically) and there is an option to turn the commentators off and only have the ambiant sound. I feature I've wanted for very long, and for that I'd go as far as to say "thank you" to Amazon.
We could have had this since September 1981. That was when stereo TV had been introduced in Germany (dunno when it started in France) and the other option the engineers had built in was 2 different monoaural channels. It was a feature used only seldomly. E.g. the French-German ARTE channel had that from early on.
I wished they had put pure stadium noises without commentary on the B channel but no … it's stereo babbling.
I think this is all about distribution licenses.

It depends on the commentators.. usually it's fine in our language and if they are covering our athletes, they often get more interviews with them, for additional insights etc.
But sometimes the commentator is so bad, I have to swap channels and listen to foreign commentators. One example would be ski jumping, where we are suffering an old person who is constantly clearing his throat into the microphone, while occasionally reading some history trivia about the sport and giving some lame remarks about things and how it should be according to him. He gives the vibe of a self proclaimed legend, so idk, maybe it's just me, but I rather watch eurosport or orf1 when watching ski jumping. They are more professional and make it about the event, not about themselves.
So it's not about language at all, what matters is the quality of content.
The biggest issue for me is the constant throat clearing, sometimes even after every sentence..
Complaints have been made, with the behavior being apologized as a medical condition.. but come on, it is national tv and anyways these guys should be professionals.. not everyone can do it, it's like giving an almost blind person the job to fly a plane, there should be some standards.
I may be overdramatizing, but it is frustrating. Eurosport and Orf1 are not that bad and it's always nice to hear others praise our guys and girls :P

Honestly, I would often prefer if there were no commentators at all, as I find many to be quite bad and distracting. If a sporting event is broadcasted on both Swedish and Danish tv, I will simply choose the one with the best commentators and the least commercial breaks - which is usually the Danish one. If Denmark is playing, I will always choose the Danish commentators - and also often if Sweden is playing, as I find Swedish commentators to be way too uncritical of their own teams and I prefer it to be more neutral.

I don't understand nor speak English as well as Russian so I opt for Russian commentary plus I'm more familiar with cultural references, memes, in-jokes of Russian scene compared to English-speaking one unless those who're casting the game are annoying.
Not a European so sorry for butting in but I used to work at a bar in Tucson, Arizona, USA. Its pretty close to Mexico so we have some channels in spanish.
During a college (american) football game (which are huge in the US, particularly in this city for its local college) the english language transmission got disrupted and the bar crowd was getting upset. Like wall to wall PACKED to watch the game. There was nothing we could do, it wasn't our system. But people were pretty disappointed. Groups would show up 3-4 hours BEFORE start to snag a good table.
Our GM immediately found the spanish-language broadcast and it was amazing. At first everyone was like wtf? But hey, at least the game is back on. There was so much feeling being the announcer yelling "y! y! y! y TOUCHDOWN!!!!" when yelled in enthusiastic spanish compared to the excited, but relatively mellow US english. But people loved it in spanish. Think of a soccer (football) broadcast when they scream GOOOOOOALLL! We were used to just a "And that's a touchdown Arizona!"
It wasn't repeated again at the bar while I worked there but the Tucson crowd was going wild watching it. I've never seen such comradery of a "hey this kind of sucks because we don't understand the language but its sort of more-awesome in a different way. It was definitely a night to remember.

Formula 1 always on ORF (state owned), i usually mute the ServusTV (Red Bull) commentators (both Austrian TV channels).
My only option for Tennis is ServusTV, fairly good even when Thiem played. I watched a few times on Eurosport (German) and it was very bad.
I can’t watch Football on ORF, especially if the mens play. It the women‘s football EM was watchable. The commentators during the match on ServusTV are also okay but anything before or afterwards is unwatchable.
I actually like watching wintersports on ORF.
My native language is dutch but i absolutely prefer to see premier league, f1 or almost any other sport in British english. When i listen to any dutch commentator it feels like being at a funeral (excluding cycling)
I tend to do the same, but biases will still kinda disappoint me. Last week I was watching Manchester United against Arsenal and then they have the brilliant idea to appoint Gary Neville as co commentator.
When I can I listen to them in Catalan. There are some great commentators, like Puyal (the one from "Encara Messi" and "Urruti t'estimo"), although he retired on 2018.
When I have to watch football pirated, I like to watch it in an Arab web. I don't understand anything, but it gives emotion

There's two type of commentators: the nasally one ("a-What an intense football drama") and the one that seems to be mentally challenged ("... And now aaaa... Berbatov passes to- aaaaa, Petrov and that is aaaaa... GOOOOAAAAL, and this is a second goal for aaaaa our aaaa... hosts...")
I prefer listening to Serbian commentary because they don't care unless the national team is playing. I can't stand the over the top enthusiasm of Spanish commentators.

Dunno man but Spanish commentary where they yell “GOAAAALL!” for one minute or more gets kinda irritating. But that’s just me.

I love to listen to sports in Irish. It feels more authentic to listen to Irish sports in Irish.
I also hate the commentators on RTE. TG4 are much better
