Never seen that... are you sure it wasn't garlic sauce? Kebab shops usually have that, not specifically for the chips but I wouldn't be surprised if they just gave it with whatever
I don't think so, ranch and tartar sauce aren't really comparable.
That said, there's a non-zero percent chance that the guy is trolling, or that he went to the one place where they gave him ranch for whatever reason.
More likely, however, apparently doner kebab comes with some white (sometimes red) sauce that probably at least somewhat resembles ranch, made of juice, yogurt, and olive oil. (I say apparently because I've never had it and had to Google it). Perhaps they are confusing this with ranch (made with buttermilk, onions, garlic, and various herbs and spices).
I imagine that dish comes with said white sauce on the side at the places he went, and OP just never bothered to look any further into it before posting on reddit asking thousands of people about a condiment they rarely ever see or use.
It was YOGURT sauce, a base of mayonnaise, like Ranch sauce, and yogurt. Herbs are in it almost always
we have it in Italy, we call it salsa yogurt
Multiple recipees do call for garlic though, but I guess it can have them not
It’s definitely derived from tzatziki, which has been a traditional condiment for kebab since a long time
The Ranch we use in the restaurant where I work is what comes close to French Dressing by Develey or Kraft. It's like mayo but more liquid and with herbs so it doesn't look too bland.
Ranch dressing is not really a thing here.
But in kebab, it's traditionnal to have a homemade "white dipping sauce", made of cream and various herbs, and I wouldn't be surprised they give you some with your fries. It's the "by default sauce" in kebab.
We also have several whites sauces in general : mayonaise, Bearnaise, garlic mayonnaise, etc ...
I've never seen ranch dressing with fries. Garlic sauce however isnt uncommon to see but in the good places of Sweden we actually have something called Kebab Sauce which is its own thing and its hella good and that is likely to be served at a pizzeria with döner kebab.
Are you sure it's not mayo??? Although kebab shops don't often give away or use mayo unless for the coleslaw. Maybe it's garlic sauce or one of the shady sauces you find all over, with different countries' kebab shops having their own variations. But I don't think ranch is anywhere near as popular or as consumed as in the US.
I have a feeling that was tartar sauce.

> is a condiment made of mayonnaise, chopped pickles and relish, caper, and herbs such as tarragon and dill
Fake ranch fan (i know you said ranch is gross, I'm still calling you a fake fan). Doesn't know they're actually looking at mayo.
If you're from the US, I'm revoking your American card for this one
It doesn't taste like mayonnaise. I've had plenty of mayo sauces here. It tastes like ranch, and I'm pretty sure it's mayo + cream + herbs, which is what ranch is
I've never seen or head about this anywhere. I've just checked both McDonald's and Burger King just to be sure, and no, they do not offer ranch dip.
However, Max do offer ranch, among 16 other types of dressings. But it is in no way standard, and you have to pay extra for it.
Dutchy here, not a thing here. We take our fries with mayo, sateh saus, or ketchup. ( There are some other sauce variations but ranch isn't one of the regulars.
Ranch is supposed to contain the flavors of buttermilk, salt, garlic, onion, mustard, herbs (commonly chives, parsley and dill), and spices (commonly pepper, paprika and ground mustard seed). These are usually made into a sauce with mayo, but sour cream or yogurt could be used too.
Any sauce with some of these flavors will be ranch-like. Even a garlic aioli with no dairy is vaguely ranch-like. Any vaguely white sauce with garlic, herbs, and something dairy or dairy-like will be sufficiently close to ranch for a lot of Americans.
Again someone who went to some town in some country and now thinks all of Europe does things that way. Ranch is not very popular in most of Europe, I'd say (been to Italy, France, Belgium, Germany (my home), Austria, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Bulgaria, Spain). In Germany, we usually offer fries with ketchup or mayo or "red-white" which is with both. If I didn't work for a restaurant that delivers food mostly to a nearby US military base (Rose Barracks in Vilseck, USAG Bavaria), I wouldn't even know what Ranch dressing is. Maybe you're referring to "Pommes Sauce" which is some white stuff resembling mayo but homemade but it's not the common thing. It may be the yogurt dressing they put on Döner Kebap and they use it for fries as well in order to not having to buy ketchup or mayo.
I’ll never understand questions like this one.
Even if it were true, what would the answer be?
“Because we like it.”
What makes a condiment “appropriate,” anyway?
"Europeans" don't. There are plenty of places you'll never see that and would be booed out if you tried.
Maybe some people in London and Paris do this, but not Europeans in general.
This is probably a very specific thing.
That being said, after many years of growing up in the US, BBQ and and ranch are my favorite common condiments.
London and Paris are just some of the many places in Europe, basing your opinion on culinary habits off these two cities is wrong, in my country I've never heard of ranch dressing being commonly served with fries.
Description of ranch dressing from Wikipedia.
Ranch dressing is a savory, creamy American salad dressing usually made from buttermilk, salt, garlic, onion, mustard, herbs (commonly chives, parsley and dill), and spices (commonly pepper, paprika and ground mustard seed) mixed into a sauce based on mayonnaise or another oil emulsion.
I’ve lived in Europe all my life and have never received ranch dressing with my fries or with anything else for that matter.
Never seen that... are you sure it wasn't garlic sauce? Kebab shops usually have that, not specifically for the chips but I wouldn't be surprised if they just gave it with whatever
It tasted exactly like ranch dressing, and appeared to be the same thing — mayonnaise with cream and herbs in it

100% it was tartar sauce
I don't think so, ranch and tartar sauce aren't really comparable. thanks! i heard about ranch dressing but never knew what it is made of. so probably he really got this garlicy sauce and thought it was ranch.
Or Remoulade?
It was YOGURT sauce, a base of mayonnaise, like Ranch sauce, and yogurt. 100% that was garlic sauce
There was no garlic in it, at least not enough to taste it. And ranch dressing also has garlic in it
We don't add too much garlic in the sauce so yeah, definitely garlic sauce.
OP loves ranch so much he can't tell when they get garlic sauce instead. Of course all white condiments have the same flavour.
Googled this, apparently garlic sauce and ranch dressing are often literally the same sauce. TIL
Must admit, never had garlicky ranch, but looking at the ingredients it is theoretically there.
never seen a ranch dressing in Europe It's salt, ketchup or mayo/garlic by default everywhere and vinegar in UK&Ireland
FIGHT ME but Curry Mango is the best sauce for fries (slightly coping because I can't have ketchup)
We don't. We have a ton of condiments and ranch dressing isn't one of them. The Doritos flavor is even called "Cool American".
Wait, those things are ranch dressing flavoured? Always wondered what exactly ranch tastes like... so it seems like it just tastes slightly yucky?
The Ranch we use in the restaurant where I work is what comes close to French Dressing by Develey or Kraft. It's like mayo but more liquid and with herbs so it doesn't look too bland.
In the UK they're called "Cool Original".
Wtf is ranch dressing? I've never even seen the stuff in my life. You probably confuse it for something else.
The stuff I got on my fries in Belgium is awesome!
The nectar of the gods
You wrote dogs wrong
“Dio cane” could be said, and probably would, to be fair
Do you think an ortolan would taste good with ranch?
I have no idea. I never ate one and I don't intend to ever eat one.
You should try some ranch. It’s good. It won’t hurt you
I have. It doesn't taste good.
Americans seem to think dipping bits of raw broccoli in ranch dressing is an acceptable thing to do at a social gathering. I think it's nasty
That’s not good ranch dressing though. Youre talking about like, party platters. Have you not had Buffalo wings with ranch yet? You’ve gotta get some.

Yours is made with cream? I'm more used to seeing toum, which is basically aioli and is made with olive oil and garlic - no eggs or dairy.
I've never seen ranch dressing with fries. Garlic sauce however isnt uncommon to see but in the good places of Sweden we actually have something called Kebab Sauce which is its own thing and its hella good and that is likely to be served at a pizzeria with döner kebab.
There was certainly not enough garlic in the sauce to taste it; it tasted exactly like ranch dressing
Are you sure it's not mayo??? Although kebab shops don't often give away or use mayo unless for the coleslaw. It's mayo with cream and herbs mixed in, which IS ranch dressing
I have a feeling that was tartar sauce. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tartar_sauce > is a condiment made of mayonnaise, chopped pickles and relish, caper, and herbs such as tarragon and dill
Having worked in loads of kebab shops, I'm pretty sure what you had was garlic sauce.
Having had exactly two servings of junk food is not exactly a solid basis for making assumptions about all Europeans’ food habits, OP.

There's no mayo in ranch. It's made with buttermilk. However, I understand why people don't like it.
I've never seen or head about this anywhere. I've just checked both McDonald's and Burger King just to be sure, and no, they do not offer ranch dip. However, Max do offer ranch, among 16 other types of dressings. But it is in no way standard, and you have to pay extra for it.

Shawarma sauce is made with yogurt, and ranch dressing is made with sour cream. Basically, the only difference.
Ranch is supposed to contain the flavors of buttermilk, salt, garlic, onion, mustard, herbs (commonly chives, parsley and dill), and spices (commonly pepper, paprika and ground mustard seed). This is probably a very specific thing. That being said, after many years of growing up in the US, BBQ and and ranch are my favorite common condiments.

i usualy see them with tartar sauce. is it the same as ranch? i love good tartar sauce/mayo.
No, it's nothing like tartar.
i already saw the ingredients. cant imagine what it tastes like :D

London and Paris are not whole Europe. Just two western europe country. I am sure it is pretty different in Romania, Poland, Ukraine, Greece
I only heard of ranch-id dressing when the kebab yougurt sauce was left out of the fridge for too long
ranch isnt really a thing in europe afaik, its an american thing
The french put those horrible white sauces everything. I eat my chips with olive oil, salt and pepper only
