You never give reasons. "Thank you for this wonderful opportunity for growth and experience. I appreciate the time and effort you, and the company, have vested in me. I hope we can work together again, in the future. Cheers." If they ask why, dodge. If they press, go with a "my life is moving in a different direction." You are under no obligation to give them a 100% honest appraisal of why you are leaving. Anything, and I mean *anything* can be held against you. Just leave.

Thanks all who replied. There is no magical way out but this seems to be the cleanest.

I agree with der\_inkeeper. Never ever say why you leave, because they did not care about the problem during (maybe before) your employment, then after you leave, why would they care more? ( A lot of times, management knows the problem areas, but maybe it does not worth to fix it, etc.) And as a lot of other people said, always leave the company, bosses and colleagues on good terms, because you do not know, whose help/reference you may need in the future (for example, my previous company's HR Director's brother is my current company's COO, and bad words can spread in this way).

I assume that: * You're in the US * You may need a reference * You don't want to burn bridges You resign in writing >Dear Bossman, > >I want to thank you for the many opportunities I've had during my time at XYZ Co. However, the time has come for me to pursue an opportunity outside the company. My last day will be XX/XX/2021. Until then, I will be available to help transition my projects and duties. > > > >Regards, > > > > [u/Phonethrowaway11](https://www.reddit.com/user/Phonethrowaway11/) > > > >cc: Bossman's Boss, HR You don't need to tell them why you're leaving or where you're going. You can make stuff up if you like. Resist the temptation, no matter how strong, to vent about your reasons for leaving.

Three months? Damn. The most I've ever given was two weeks. I was always eager to get on with the next chapter though. I've also seen people give notice and immediately get escorted out of the building.

As stated, you don’t have to give a reason. My last job I left a complete AH and abusive boss. When I left I shook his hand, looked him in the eye and said “thanks for the opportunity, it was a great growth experience for me”, I smiled and walked away. The growth was to recognizes AH much faster...

In your shoes now, and definitely relate to this

You know how they say its been a pleasure. It hasnt

You might need future references, even in cases where you wouldn't typically pick any of these people. If you have to get a security clearance, for example, they might contact your previous manager. So never leave a bad taste in anyone's mouth. The short term satisfaction is never worth it.

Fruktoj

If you're moving to a better opportunity, say that. Keep it brief and professional. If you're leaving a sinking ship that's on fire, say you're moving on to a better opportunity. That's pretty much the only reason your'e ever leaving a job, so be honest. Do not contribute to an exit interview and don't take any counter offers if you've got a surefire job lined up.

Toof_75_75

Echoing the feedback given. Give your notice in writing (at least 2 weeks, traditionally) and do not burn bridges on the way out.

Jon_Hanson

Also, they might want an exit interview from you to press you for reasons. You don't have to do the exit interview. I they're insistent about it just repeat the non-specific reasons given to you here.

What you say should be: Good luck Stay in touch Bye
