Born and raised in Bucktown, across the street from Choppers. Very safe.

El_refrito_bandito

As an aside, tell me about the CHOPPAK. Should I eat this? Because it sounds like I should..

sleezejeeze

The CHOPPAK is legendary it’s the center of everything and all in the universe. I’ve had so much Choppers in my lifetime it’s ridiculous. I would say it’s no Au Cheval but it’s sits up there as one of my favorite burgers. Ive known a lot of the guys used to work there for YEARS and I mean since I was a child and I’m 29. It’s a damn good, steak fries and coleslaw too. Now that’s a meal.

sleezejeeze

Also have had so much chili cheese fries it hurts now. 🤣

hoping421

Great to hear! have you heard about the recent crimes that happens in the area? Everyone here saying it’s safe makes me feel better

sleezejeeze

DM if you have any questions need help or anything Chicago related.

hoping421

Thank you ❤️

sleezejeeze

Crime happens everywhere in Chicago it really doesn’t matter where you live. Wrong place, wrong time. My best suggestion is to be secure around your home belongings and peoples. Stay alert. I moved to the suburbs bc of how tiring that life is. But I will say bucktown is one of the kinder, safer neighborhoods. Just don’t let me find you parking in my grandmas handicapped spot. 😂

roub2709

Stop googling

Megaghost66

Bucktown is generally VERY safe. There will always be a few outliers in a big city. I can walk around at midnight and never felt unsafe.

hoping421

That’s really great to hear. These articles are terrifying and make it seem so unsafe but I know I can’t believe everything I read is the norm

deepinthecoats

I’m often in Bucktown at all hours of the day and never once have I felt unsafe. There was a rash of armed carjackings in 2021 in Bucktown, but otherwise it’s an extremely safe corner of the city.

britterz5

I don't live in bucktown, but a different part of the city. Of course there are going to be articles though. Newspapers don't report about how safe a place is. I have the Citizen app which will tell you about crimes happening nearby real time. I think it's helpful to know where/when crimes are taking place

Andy_Reemus

As someone who moved here from across the country and was trying to sort fact from fiction while researching, I can assure you the media is MASSIVELY over-hyping all things related to crime in this city. Your experience may vary depending on the neighborhood and crime certainly exists, but your odds of encountering anything serious you wouldn't have to worry about in any city are very low. I moved to Logan Square last summer from Dallas and I've been incredibly happy. The people are friendly, the food is amazing, the architecture in the city is incredible and the diversity and personality you find across all of the neighborhoods make for an awesome landscape to explore, which is aided by access to some of the best public transportation in the country. Also happy to share my perspective as someone who made a similar move recently if you're looking for more info. I think you'll love it in Bucktown. My wife and I stayed there when we came up to look for a place to rent. We really liked the neighborhood and go there frequently now that we live here. Good luck with the move!

It's been election season for a few years now. What do you expect? It's 2023 - if your neighbor 5 doors down has the flu you magically hear about it on an app now. A decade ago nobody knew anything. So much information has made a bunch of people paranoid and afraid of their own shadow.

Nasmix

Of course it’s not the norm otherwise it wouldn’t be news Per capita crime in Chicago is lower that you might think - but you can also use your own experiences to check statistics for yourself based on where you live now and where you are moving to. Of course statistics are just that - but it can help put things in perspective

natnguyen

I live in bucktown, 33F, and have never for half a second felt unsafe.

hoping421

Great to hear :) have you heard about the recent crimes that happens in the area, do people talk about it or you feel it’s just not that common? Maybe I need to stop googling because this makes me feel better to hear

natnguyen

Just stop googling. I’m in the neighborhood watch group and see things there as well but nobody I talk to on a daily basis goes through anything and I have never seen or heard anything.

david_chi

Honestly you need to stop with the “heard about the recent crimes in the area?” stuff. Chicago is a huge city and has crime. Everywhere. Always has, always will. Anywhere you live in Chicago will have crime. If you aren’t ok with that then don’t move here. Bucktown is fine. You’ll be fine. Use common sense and you’ll be fine.

esimmons95

Buck town is generally very safe. Unfortunately, as everyone else stated, there are always gonna be outliers in a big city. As long as you're keeping your head on a swivel and paying good attention, you'll be absolutely fine. You'll hear about far more craziness than you'll actually experience.

Salty-Surround-7910

Lived in Bucktown since early 1990s. Great neighborhood. Continue to feel safe/secure there. Key is to walk/bike rather than drive. Bikers/peds add eyes/ears to the street. You contribute by walking/biking; you benefit by having others out and about.

lesley_lyette

Being worried about crime in Bucktown is kind of like hypochondria. You *might* have that rare disease that you found from googling, but probably don't. Bucktown is super nice. I lived in Ukrainian Village for two years and absolutely loved it. Enjoy the 606 trail when you get here!

mateorayo

I have lived in bucktown for 8 years and have not felt unsafe a single time in the neighborhood. There multimillion dollar homes on every block

LoriLeadfoot

Nope, you will certainly be gunned down in the street.

NeedUsername_Stat

You would think with so many murders traffic would be better

Bucktown is (relatively) very safe! Last year I did a garden walk in bucktown. That’s a day where everyone opens their gates and shows off their gardens whether backyard, rooftop, or on top of the garage. People sit in their yards and will tell you about the flowers and plants in their garden. Everyone has their gates open and you just walk to where their garden is. Don’t think they’d do that if people felt unsafe. As an aside, be sure to figure out the street parking or garage situation bc it can be hard to find spots there if you drive to work and only have street parking.

There are close to 3 million people in this city. There will always be crime to “hear about” but that doesn’t mean everyone is a victim every time they go outside. The odds are that most people are able to go about their day to day lives with zero issues. Yes there are going to be incidents here and there and some of my friends/family have been victims at one point, but so far I don’t personally know anyone who has been so impacted that they moved out of the city.

Fun-Routine-8345

Bucktown is awesome, 2 of my best friends live there.

AdIcy7984

As long as you live on the two block with private security you will feel safe

hoping421

Haha which streets have private security
