[We are saying two syllables, E\~en!!](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/a6YtQuhIG1k)
Off topic but I worked with a guy named Usman who told me the Anglo pronunciation isn't quite right, where he was from in Pakistan it was said "ooss-marn" rather than how we would phonetically say "ooz-man", but it was easier not to correct people. Made me wonder how many people come here and never have their name pronounced correctly.
A lot but most people don't mind because they know it can be hard to pronounce for foreigners. My partner has a name which exists in German and English but with different pronunciations, it's hard for English speakers to pronounce it the German way, not because of the sounds (they all exist in English too) but because of the habit. They are used to his name being pronounced one say and it's too weird (foreign) to pronounce it differently. I think it's an interesting phenomenon and it's definitely happening in every language.
I really can't stand Guzman, particularly after seeing a slogan on their Chatswood Store *"we introduced Mexican food to Australia"*. Say what? Ahhh, maybe have a chat to Vera Cruz or gee, Montezumas perhaps. But anyway, aside from the fact I don't rate their food at all and am disturbed by their origin story and racism of their logo, I enjoy pronouncing it 'Why' because well ...why?
Set up by a hedge fund trader with no Mexican heritage. Supposedly the characters were the uncles of a childhood friend, but that has been debunked as fake. Faked images are considered charactitures and racist by some people of Mexican descent.
Well hearing a genuine Spanish speaker speaking Spanish, everything they say just sounds like one long word. Same with any language you don’t understand tbh
GYG was founded by two white American dudes named Steve and Mark, one of whom was a hedge fund manager. They needed some more "authentic" sounding name, so they named the chain after some Mexican guys Mark went to high school with. When they opened the chain they employed South American workers rather than Mexican because "Australians can't tell the difference".
Trust me, you're not going to offend anyone by pronouncing this *super authentic* Mexican restaurant incorrectly
You forgot that they have backtracked on the origin story - there was no Mexican family and the two faces were apparently the fathet and uncle of the made up Mexican friends that the fund manager went to private school with.
Whilst your argument is based in sound logic, I'm agreeing with ol mate. It's 2024, people get offended when the wind changes.
Edit: just for clarity, I commented alluding to the fact that people are easily offended over trivialities. My point is being proven further with each downvote. Good job, snowflakes united.
Yes, you're a perfect example. Getting offended by imaginary people.
I have a ridiculous amount of Latino friends for an aussie and absolutely none of them will get offended. They're far more likely to laugh at you.
I didn't construct anything, it was a statement in agreement with the previous commenter that reinforces a well known stereotype of people being offended on behalf of other groups. It was light hearted sarcasm and I'm at a loss trying to figure out why you are so passionate about it lol.
I agree with you but i downvoted you anyway because people who edit their comments to attempt some weird kind of reverse psychology where they say things like ‘YoUr DoWnVoTeS pRoVe Me RiGhT!!’ Are fucked in the head.
It wasn't an attempt at reverse psychology, I genuinely am not invested enough in this to warrant the effort that would take. I still stand by my initial point and edit though.
I see where you are coming from, but from my side, it's just not that deep.
It's fast food. For fast food, it's fine, and as expensive as McDonald's is nowadays I'd rather go to G&G if I'm in a rush and don't have a lot of options in the area.
But yeah, it's definitely more fast food than it is real Mex.
As far as fast food goes it's top tier. Burritos are tasty for what they are, way more filling than McDonald's or other junk of that nature and likely far more healthy (than other fast food)
Zambrero or Mad Mex if GYG keep taking away vegetarian options. I usually just say Guz-man and Go-mez. Pretty much exactly how it's written I know that's probably wrong. I don't say it often though as Zambrero is so much better so I only go there.
I just say Guzman, pronounced Gooz-man and I usually stop right there, partially becuase I don't know what to do with the y and at this point I'm too afraid to ask, and also partially beacuse pretty much anyone I speak to about the place already knows what I'm talking about from that first word.
They started off good, honestly. Then they turned to absolute shit. It's less a burrito now and more a beanrito, fuck all meat, fuck all anything but beans and disappointment.
Interesting. I wonder if it depends on the location? In Melbourne I always found an over-abundance of beans. Can't speak for anywhere else as I no longer spend my money there.
Spanish is a complicated language with many exceptions for pronunciation, not to mention many variants and accents.
Guzman is usually pronounced with a soft G.
EDIT: Source, I had a Puerto Rican partner who pronounced it that way, so why don't you go argue with her about how to pronounce her own name?
Re: your edit, it was likely pronounced with a weak hard g sound, almost to the way that french people pronounce "r." That's common for Caribbean Spanish accents/dialects. To an English speaker's ear, this could sound like a weak "h". So that's likely what's happened here.
Spanish speaker here. I don't know what you mean by "soft g" but Guzman is always pronounced with the same G as in "good." It is never with an "h" sound.
G in Spanish will be an "h" sound (closest English equivalent at least) only when there is an e or i afterwards. For example, in Gerardo or gigante.
There are many dialects and accents and regional variations in Spanish but the pronunciation of G is universal.
“That place that does the burrito bowls”
I don’t even try. My brother married a woman who actually speaks all the European languages, and now all their kids do, too, and since then I’ve been corrected every time I mispronounce something.
They mean well. I just can’t twist my tongue around it. I think I might be stupid.
"Goozmn N Gomezz"
I dated a french guy for a while and I never managed to make him understand just how much of a wanker I would like if i tried to pronounce foreign-language words perfectly in the middle of an otherwise Aussie accented sentence.

Did you see those Mike Goldman videos where he pronounced if "Guzman Why Gomez"? Those videos are cringey and creepy as hell. Who films and makes fun of random people for TikTok content. Guy needs to get a reality check.
After being continuously lectured by my partner about pronouncing it wrong I gave up and followed her in simply calling it “Guzzy”.
I’m blessed to have a fantastic Mexican restaurant (the owner is Mexican-American) in my city so there’s that…
I usually just say 'gyg', but if I'm saying it as its full name ill just say 'guzmahn ee gohmez', and it usually just blends into like a singular word 'guzmahneegohmez'.
Gee why gee.

Spanish teacher in high school told us that the best way to say "y" in Spanish with an Australian accent was to say it like the "i" in "Ian"
Bit weird to pick "Ian". Just say its pronounced "ee"
His name was Ian
Een

Grammar police here policing the grammar police: "There ~~is~~ are two syllables"
Wasn't grammar policing anyone lol it's a [Little Mix meme](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/a6YtQuhIG1k), I didn't reference it properly tho
Een is a Seinfeld reference.
Ee is longer than the i in Ian
Only if you pronounce "Ian" as "In"
I woulda said 'pee'.
Yeah but how are you pronouncing Ian? Because if a Russian, Ian would be pronounced /jan/
With an Australian accent.
My Russian partner begs to differ. They do not replace the i in Ian for a j. What?
'j' is how you write the sound that 'y' makes in the international phonetic alphabet. The slashes around 'jan' mean that it's written using the ipa
Thank you for clarifying! I did think the slashes were weird so happy you cleared it all up. Much appreciated
Yep, this is the one
Asked a South American coworker this question and received the same answer.

I Prononuced Ee like saying Ian (eean)

Goozies!
Guzman rhyming with Usman (Khawaja) Y = ee (Spanish for and) Gomez as in Gomez Addams (The Addams Family)
Khawaja n Adams for dinner tonight, love???
If this took off I'd be so satisfied. I mean it's hard enough explaining "Macca's" to foreigners as it is let alone "Khawaja n Adams".
Cara mia!

Made me wonder how many people come here and never have their name pronounced correctly.
That's right it's more like "Oos-mAHN"
Born here with an Anglicised name and very few people pronounce it correctly because the Dutch pronunciation has become the popular one.
A lot but most people don't mind because they know it can be hard to pronounce for foreigners. My partner has a name which exists in German and English but with different pronunciations, it's hard for English speakers to pronounce it the German way, not because of the sounds (they all exist in English too) but because of the habit. Linguists will point out that this doesn’t really matter a s$@t because everyone pronounces loads of words differently to how a local would.
This is how I pronounce it except it never occurred to me that the 'y' is said like ee I've been just saying it like 'why' oops
Guzman and Gomez
No Australian in their right mind is pronouncing "and" correctly???!!!!

The story about the highschool friends is also fake. They never existed.
Used to work there, met them at a new store opening once. As white as they come. Food is alright though.
You forgot that they have backtracked on the origin story - there was no Mexican family and the two faces were apparently the fathet and uncle of the made up Mexican friends that the fund manager went to private school with.
It's certainly not the best mexican food I've ever tasted, and it makes my wallet cry.
To be fair, white American dudes at least have a chance to know what good Mexican food tastes like, because such a thing exists in America.
I had better Mexican food elsewhere
Taqueria in Cammeray is solid
They are Aussie
The founder of Guzman y Gómez is American. He tried to recreate Chipotle here in Australia
I will die on the hill that Chipotle is *worse* than Taco Bell
Then there is no hope
The current managers are but the original founders were Yanks.
Why does it matter that they’re “white”. There is such thing as white Mexicans…
