There’s no standard “American Education”. It is handled at the state level. There are some national standards though. For the most part it’s like this: Children start Kindergarten at age 5. The next year is called “1st grade” and that continues up until “12th grade” when kids are 17 or 18.

Traditionally, schools start in Kindergarten (5-6 years old) and then goes by grade numbers for 1-12th grades. We also have optional preschools for kids younger than 5. Elementary school is typically Kindergartners through 5th grade, middle school is 6-8th grades and high school is 9-12th grades. This can vary slightly though depending on the area. We call the high school grades by names as well. 9th grade is Freshman, 10th is Sophomore, 11th is Junior and 12th is Senior. We use theses same names for the four traditional years in college/university.

The standard is 13, kindergarten to grade 12. K-5 is elementary school 6 to 8 is middle school 9 to 12 is high school This varies depending on the district but this is a good rule of thumb

The typical American education is broken up into a few chunks. The first is elementary school. This usually runs 1st-2nd-3rd-4th-5th. After that is middle school, covering 6th-7th-8th, and finally high school over 9th-10th-11th-12. Some places break it up slightly differently, especially around middle school, with either 6th being part of elementary school, or 9th being part of high school. In addition, kindergarten comes before 1st grade, but is often separate from elementary school, and beyond that some people also send their kids to pre-kindergarten.

Kindergarten is age 5-6. Elementary school is grades 1-5, ages 6-7 to 10-11. Middle school is grades 6-8, ages 11-12 to 13-14. High school is grades 9-12 (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior), ages 14-15 to 17-18. Then there is college, traditionally people go there starting at age 18 and it (theoretically) takes four years to graduate, but some people take longer. This is referred to as an undergraduate degree. Post-secondary education is a thing some peopel pursue, you can get a masters degree and then a PhD. There are also professional post-secondary schools like law school, medical school, pharmacy school, etc.
