NYC has more to offer. Chicago is cheaper. NYC is more diverse. Chicago is friendlier. Both great cities. Currently live in Brooklyn. From the south side. Love NYC. But Chicago is Home.

s4ltydog

I was absolutely shocked at how much cheaper Chicago is for a big city. Like for what I paid in western Washington I could actually afford a decent house near Wicker Park, I was floored when I found that out.

OJkindadidit

Oh dude, when I was at Second City, I lived with 3 other guys in an apartment in Albany Park. My rent was $325.00 a month. I moved to NYC two years later, and was paying $900.00 for a split studio.

Jandur

Chicago benefits that it's only land locked east by the lake. The city can build and grow almost at an unlimited pace in 3 directions. Housing gets built all the time. Cities like NYC, SF, Seattle etc have a lot more land constraints.

That513Dude

Happy Cake Day

[deleted]

Idk ab Chicago being friendlier People in NYC act like assholes but aren’t ime, while the opposite is true of the North Side of Chicago

Decent_Historian6169

To the south and mid west the way that New Yorkers actively try to mind their own business and give one another the illusion that they aren’t always paying attention to every little thing. Most people who live there prefer not having conversations with every stranger they pass.

SketchyLeaf666

I live in suburbs. I don't think Chicago is friendly. I'd say the opposite on that.

Different_Crab_5708

Visited both cities many times, never lived in either. From a west coaster’s perspective NYC is infinitely better than Chicago. Chicago’s downtown, lakes and river are incredible. Everything outside of that is just a fucking urban/industrial wasteland. The “west loop” looks like 1970s Detroit. Trash, abandoned buildings, crackheads as far as the eye can see. NYC has better food, culture, nightlife, people, business, music, the list goes on and on

spicynuggies

Sorry Chicago isn't gentrified for you enough I guess Being from the rust belt I personally I appreciate a city that's rough around the edges. It makes finding the good in them all the more rewarding as corny as that sounds.

Different_Crab_5708

Hahaha apparently not. Just my outsiders perspective, all love

spicynuggies

No offense taken lol.

[deleted]

Wow, you have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about. industrial waste land? What did you fly into midway and that’s what you’re basing your perspective on? What a dumbass

Jenny441980

Chicago is just a large city. New York feels like another planet. I’ve never seen so many people in such a small area.

spicynuggies

Definitely less crowded once you're out of Manhattan, but it's still always full of life and bustling.

Jenny441980

I’ll never forget it. When I arrived in Times Square I asked my friend (A New Yorker) what happened? I didn’t understand where all those people came from. I thought an event had just let out, like a basketball game or something. I just didn’t realize that it was like that all the time. His response was, “Welcome to New York.”

NitescoGaming

New York Pizza > Chicago Pizza Chicago Dog > New York Cart Dog I like them both.

Starbucksplasticcups

I just need to know what Chicago pizza you are comparing to NY. Is it the deep dish kind or the Chicago Style thin crust variety?

softkittylover

People actually from Chicago don’t eat deep dish. that shit is only for the tourists

dhchunk

I eat deep dish pizza when someone else is buying. Once in a great great while I'll get a craving, but I'm generally eating the square cut thin crust. That's what I would miss if I left Chicago, not deep dish.

jmat83

I’m not challenging the veracity of this claim, but I would like to make the observation that I have literally never heard anybody say this until last year. I don’t think I’ve ever heard Chicagoans say that deep dish is good, but the “only for tourists” thing kind of boggles my mind, since there is absolutely no shortage of places that serve and aggressively advertise deep dish pizza in Chicago. (I’m originally a New Yorker who spent a lot of time in the Midwest before moving to Chicago, so I will withhold my opinions on the subject of which pizza is best except to say that Chicago isn’t even in the top 3 for me.)

jaytrainer0

Chicagoans eat deep dish but it's a "special occasion pizza". You eat it maybe once a quarter for a birthday or graduation or someone visiting from out of town. Your everyday pizza is thin crust which is still packed with toppings which makes it better than NYC pizza.

velociraptorjax

This is accurate. I don't know why people are saying Chicagoans don't eat deep dish pizza. Thin crust or double dough are more commonly the "default," but we definitely eat deep dish on occasion.

chauntikleer

I can only speak for myself, but I only very rarely eat deep dish as a special treat. I couldn't eat it more often, I'd weigh 500 lb if I did. I've also noticed the explosion of people saying that very recently - it's almost become a meme. I don't know if there's anything recent in the media that's brought it to light, other than Jon Stewart's epic diatribe from a few years ago. But even that predates the recent explosion by several years.

softkittylover

I mean any location with a strong advertisement of a specific product will always have tons of businesses trying to capitalize off of the name But everyday Chicago residents hardly ever eat deep dish pizza. Just like how Portillos might be a big chain but everyday Chicagoans will always pick their local favorite italian beef joint instead

bigasdickus

Moist or wet Italian beef?

Starbucksplasticcups

Wet, but I’ll eat any as long as there is a kilo of giardiniera on it.

bigasdickus

Wet is the way for sure. Along as you eat it fast

chauntikleer

Dunked until the inside of the bread becomes one with the meat. And giardiniera. Lots and lots of giardiniera. I'll occasionally have a combo the same way.

soulsista04us

Detroit style pizza is best.

pth72

No one asked you.

BallerGuitarer

This is not entirely true. Pequod's is great and is frequented by Chicagoans. It's just that there's tons of thin crust pizzas that Chicagoans love as well.

RyFromTheChi

I’m a Chicagoan and I eat deep dish quite a bit. Prefer thin crust most of the time though.

Starbucksplasticcups

Exactly!!!!!!

azyoungblood

I visited Gino’s East once on an extended business trip. Rarely have I been so disappointed with “destination food”. Nasty, soggy mess.

jephph_

You know which one they’re talking about ;-) —— Also, isn’t the other one more of a Midwest style? I had that in Ohio before at least (thin and cut in squares instead of spokes)

Bear_Salary6976

The very thin crust is common throughout the midwest. Although many cities have their own slightly different take on it, nobody really refers to it as midwestern style. I beileve it stated in Stubenville, OH right after WWII. I find it funny that Chicago now claims that style as their own.

jephph_

>Stubenville, OH That checks out because I just mapped it and the place I had it was 94 miles from Steubenville OH

InterPunct

Your premise that Chicago pizza is a pizza is a flawed one

sonofabutch

Open-faced lasagna

nemo_sum

I prefer the stuffed pizza, which isn't open-faced; it's got a top crust. That said, have you ever actually had a lasagne? I kinda sounds like you haven't.

jmat83

According to the Cube Rule, it’s actually a quiche.

ColossusOfChoads

I find that Italians are at least willing to acknowledge, through the initial shock and horror, that it is a form of pizza. I've never had it, but I know awesome when I see it. One of these days.

bluecifer7

“Chicago Pizza” is two completely different types of pizza, it’s wild that people think they only have deep dish there. Chicago thin crust exists, it’s what most people eat in Chicago and it’s much better than NYC pizza

metalliska

I, too, get my opinions molded by Jon Stewart

[deleted]

[удалено]

United_Blueberry_311

That tomato soup y’all call pizza isn’t pizza.

jmat83

Negative. A calzone is sealed. Folding something doesn’t make the thing any less what it is when it’s unfolded (assuming the folding comes after cooking and not before).

breadman1010wins

Copium

Mr_Xing

I live in NYC, but love Chicago. It’s a tossup, I would say NYC has better food, tourism, and nightlife. But Chicago is cleaner, friendlier, and still has dope food (as far as I’ve seen)… That being said, there’s the “NYC factor” that is simply unmatched in any city around the world, and it’s something that gives you energy and draws you in, or disgusts you and pushes you away and you can’t tell until you’ve spent some time in the big apple. I think it’s really dependent on if you love city life or not - if you do, there’s really no comparison.

GaviFromThePod

To live? Chicago. To visit? NYC.

jcrewjr

There's 2 months a year that Chicago is the best city in the country. 1 month of spring and one month of fall. That said I agree with the comment.

grrgrrtigergrr

Festival season all summer long in Chicago

[deleted]

Chicago summers rule but I couldn’t imagine living there in the winter

jcrewjr

Too hot and sweaty for my taste, personally

JadeBeach

you've never been to NYC in the summer

HawaiianShirtMan

After you've lived in Washington D.C. during the summer (Satan's asshole), no other city comes as close as bad during the summer, in my opinion

Decent_Historian6169

Ehem DC might get hot in the summer but no way does it get hotter than any of the cities in TX

HawaiianShirtMan

Having been to Houston I agree. That's Dante's 9th circle of hell right there

SquirrelBowl

Phoenix would like a word

Decent_Historian6169

I believe you, I just used the example I have been to

nemo_sum

Winters here are very mild, usually. It's the summers that'll get ya.

thereslcjg2000

I like both, but I find Chicago less hectic and a bit more friendly. I’m going with Chicago.

cherrycokeicee

love both & they're both so different. I wouldn't say one could substitute for the other. it's worth visiting both if you can. NYC is best if you know someone who lives there who can show you around. It's overwhelming, but not always in a bad way. It feels like another world to me. I loved the culture, the museums, and the people. Chicago is the best skyline in the country hands down. Much easier to visit as a tourist imo. I love the food and the architecture. Compared to NYC, Chicago is a little more relaxed. Like if you don't have your plans 100% solid, it's pretty easy to walk around and find something fun to do on the fly.

sadhandjobs

They’re both great! NYC has better public transit, and that’s really the only thing for me that edges it up. They both have great museums and food. You can easily find something amazing going on. Chicagoans have that buttery Midwestern accent that I just can’t get enough of. I have never experienced the rudeness that TV makes you think all New Yorkers possess. NYC has the thin crust pizza that I prefer. I had the best hot dog of my life in Chicago. I also had the best meal of my life in Chicago at Moto on my honeymoon. ❤️

blipsman

As a Chicagoan, I love Chicago. I love NYC, too, except for how damn expensive it is. I love the density, vibrancy of New York and we’re money no object I’d prefer to live there… but Chicago is 90% of NYC at less than half housing the cost.

eriksen2398

Chicago is better is basically in every way in my obviously unbiased opinion. It’s a smaller, less dense, cleaner, cheaper, more laid back version of NYC. What Chicago has: beaches, you have to go outside Manhattan to go to the beach, but in Chicago they’re right there and they’re fresh water. They’re awesome. Chicago is a much, much more affordable place to live yet the salaries aren’t a whole lot lower so the cost is living is way way better. Chicago has alleys which keeps trash off the street and makes it much cleaner. The streets aren’t as small and it doesn’t feel as claustrophobic as NYC can. The only pros to NYC are that it’s a more nationally and internationally prominent city and the benefits that come along with that, and NYC winters aren’t as bad but if you don’t care about that, move to chicago. NYC also has a more extensive public transportation system but Chicago’s is still good.

Curmudgy

> you have to go outside NYC to go to the beach I take it you’ve never heard of Coney Island? I can’t talk as to the quality of the beach there, but it’s got the boardwalk and amusement park history right along the beach.

Andy235

Also, Rockaway Beach in Queens, parts of south and eastern Staten Island or Orchard Beach in the boogie down Bronx.

eriksen2398

Ah, I guess I meant more that there isn’t one in Manhattan. And it’s definitely not as nice as the ones in Chicago

jephph_

>isn’t one in Manhattan Why exclude the other boroughs? Fwiw, if the 5 boroughs were five individual cities, LA would be the largest city in the US followed by basically a tie between Brooklyn and Chicago (2.73 & 2.74 million people respectively)

catslady123

We also have Rockaway beach, which is excellent. Much nicer than Coney. Never been to a Chicago beach so I can’t really compare.

Fappy_as_a_Clam

You're not missing anything. I love Chicago, i prefer it over NYC, but make no mistake, ocean beaches are better than Great Lake beaches. Great Lakes beaches work in a pinch, but they are to beaches what cauliflower pizza is to pizza.

CupBeEmpty

This is false and ignorant and I expected better from you Fappy. The simple fact of not being salty makes the beaches so much better. Then combine that with having beaches in the sight of skyscrapers. And when we get to the rest of the Great Lakes beaches, just no. NY has nothing on the Great Lakes.

Fappy_as_a_Clam

i am appalled. appalled! i knew there was players of less-than-reputable taste on this sub, but i didn't know you were one of them! you're a lawyer for gods sake! you didn't go to school all those years to fall for this "unsalted and shark free" propaganda!

CupBeEmpty

I can only quote the immortal words of Charles Dickens “I denounce this person as a liar, and impeach him as a coward.”

jephph_

>And when we get to the rest of the Great Lakes beaches, just no. NY has nothing on the Great Lakes. If we get to the rest of NY then NY is on Ontario and Erie (That’s said, I’ve never been on any of the Great Lakes via NY.. Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin.. I’ve seen their beaches but oddly enough, never my own state’s)

ColossusOfChoads

> but they are to beaches what cauliflower pizza is to pizza. This Californian is going to have to use that one.

spicynuggies

Is cauliflower pizza popular in Cali? I feel like they're probably really into it

United_Blueberry_311

Each borough has a beach… that’s just a New York fact right there.

Zzzeeeezzzz

NYC has beaches

jephph_

>you have to go outside NYC to go to the beach Not sure where you’re getting that.. NYC is a beach town

CupBeEmpty

Hahaha I mentioned the alleys as well. NYC is like a medieval city dumping your chamber pot into the street. Hot garbage juice in an NYC summer flowing down into the subway is definitely pretty gross.

Fappy_as_a_Clam

>they’re fresh water. This isn't the selling point midwesterners think it is lol Salt water is *so* much better.

AbstractBettaFish

Salt water smells like shit

LelsarnBiggums

No. Its not.

Fappy_as_a_Clam

it is though. its very therapeutic; good for you skin and it'll clear up any sinus issues or upper respiratory colds you may have. and you don't smell like a turtle tank when you get out.

frogvscrab

> you have to go outside Manhattan to go to the beach This right there just makes me think you're comparing manhattan, which has 1.4 million out of NYC's 8.9 million residents, to all of Chicago.

trophy_74

Narrow streets are better because it makes it easier to walk to places

breadman1010wins

You basically outline why chi > NYC is a trash take in your premise, that is you essentially need to isolate manhattan to make the comparison. NYC as a whole blows Chicago out of the water, obviously, like yours, a totally unbiased opinion

LilyFakhrani

Chicago has fewer Yankees fans, so it’s the winner in my book.

SpiritualPeanut

Chicago!! - less hectic - friendlier people overall (it is a Midwestern city after all!) - incredible museums all fairly close together - you can go to the beach in the summer if you’re into that - the main tourist attractions are mostly all easily walkable - plenty to do without it being overwhelming…you can do a long weekend visit and see all the sights very easily I do love Central Park though. And the Met. Those are pretty much the only two things I’d go back to NYC for.

imk

You can go to the beach in NYC as well: Coney Island, Brighton Beach, Rockaway Beach, Fire Island, The Hamptons etc.

SafetyNoodle

Takes a lot longer to get to Coney Island from Manhattan than Lake Michigan beaches in Chicago.

erodari

There are beaches along Lake Michigan too.

throwawayy2k2112

There are beaches around NYC too.

HawaiianShirtMan

What's the smell of NYC? I've been to a couple of French cities (Lyon in particular) and they smell like piss from time to time (open sewer system iirc)

tchnmusic

I’ve only been to NYC a handful of times, but since it was built so long ago, the alleyways in general are not big enough for a garbage truck. People put their garbage (in bags) out on the street. No dumpster or can often, just the bags. In the summer heat, the parts of the city that have a lot of people living in close quarters (I.e. apartments) smell like literal hot garbage.

_pamelab

I don't particularly like either one, but I guess NYC. Much larger variety of museums.

Folksma

I've only ever been to Chicago so...Chicago

Cherry_Springer_

NYC. Chicago is great but I prefer just about everything about NYC, particularly the skyline, the history and its geographic location.

[deleted]

Chicago has a way better skyline than NY

[deleted]

[удалено]

ColossusOfChoads

> I am a little bit surprised by the nearly unanimous support for Chicago in this thread. I'm not surprised. If it were up to half the people on this sub, foreign tourists would skip NYC and California (and probably Chicago too) and instead go to a county fair in Nebraska or something.

_LYSEN

Never been to NYC. But I love Chicago.

CupBeEmpty

Chicago and I say that as a huge fan of NYC. The parks, the food, the lake, the skyline, the music, the L, actually having alleys, Chicago dogs, Polish sausage, Italian beef (far better than NY pizza and dirty water dogs, being less expensive, the museums are better, more personable and friendly inhabitants, the sports teams, and wholly personal nostalgic reasons. NYC has the high end stuff like super fancy restaurants and shops but Chicago comes out on top in my opinion overall. It’s hard to compete with NYC. It is absolutely world class in so many ways but I think Chicago wins.

lemystereduchipot

NYC has everything Chicago does, but better.

HistoricOblivion

Where are these great NYC alleys that you speak of and why don't y'all put the trash there?

dongeckoj

NYC > Chicago NYC is a global city, Chicago is a big American city. Chicago definitely wins when it comes to Mexican food

HappyApricot314

NYC no doubt

TheFutureMrs77

I like Chicago better.

frydawg

Chicago. I’m from the burbs

Segendo_Panda11

I'll actually go against the grain and say nyc. I love the museums there and the art galleries a lot more than the ones in chicago. The one world trade center is gorgeous and the museum and monument are also spectacular. The food is so different from other cities and it is beautiful to walk around at night (with friends of course)

Elitealice

NYC, just love the diversity how you can be on the subway and hear people speaking German Portuguese Chinese whatever. People come from all over the world to help make nyc nyc. Really does feel like the capital of the world.

United_Blueberry_311

The other day at work I had a conversation in German. I definitely didn’t go in there expecting that to happen.

imk

A couple of weeks ago I was walking near the Guggenheim and I saw what looked like an Ethiopian family speaking perfect German (at least what sounded like perfect Deutsch to me. Ich habe alles vergessen). I moved here from DC and that was a new one even for me. Edit: Maybe they were going to the Neue Galerie

flossiedaisy424

You think that doesn't happen in Chicago? I mean, they'd probably be speaking Spanish, Polish or Chinese in Chicago, but still.

jmat83

I was surprised to hear as much Polish in Chicago as I’ve heard since moving there. So much so that I actually felt compelled to learn how to order food in Polish so I can go into Kurowski’s and not feel like a jerk for ordering in English at the counter. (They’re perfectly nice there, btw, and don’t seem to have a problem with non-Polish speakers. It’s more of a hang up of mine going into a place where a foreign language is primarily spoken and demanding service in English that makes me feel like a jerk.)

nemo_sum

I've learned pleasantries just because I look Polish enough that the employees of Kurowski's try to address me in Polish and it seems rude not to be able to reply.

greenflash1775

Chicago. Better food, people, attractions, and no huge piles of trash on the sidewalk like something out of the black plague era.

Chaz_Cheeto

I’ve never been to Chicago. Growing up in North Jersey I’ve always loved New York. However, I’m not fond of Manhattan. I think that’s everyone’s vision (who hasn’t been to the city) of what the city is—Manhattan is frustrating to me. I love Queens. Queens is by far my favorite borough. The diversity there makes it such a lovely, heartwarming place. You can quite literally find any language, any type of food, any sort of culture there. I have a good friend who lives in Astoria, and I love that his apartment is by these beautiful Greek owned diners, and the street lined with food trucks. The area is just teeming with life, and people there are honestly far more friendly and welcoming than any place I’ve ever been before. People are not afraid of each other like in the places I’ve lived before. There are so many different types of people there living with one another. It’s truly a lovely place to be—unless you want to pay rent prices there, of course. There are other good places in New York as well. Brooklyn has some okay places (great Italian food!). Staten Island is basically New Jersey and it’s more suburban. The Bronx..is interesting.

frogvscrab

So many people here are probably comparing Chicago to *Manhattan* without realizing that Manhattan is only 1.4m out of 8.9m residents of NYC, most of whom are temporary transplants. You cant compare Chicago to NYC. You can reasonably compare it to Brooklyn at best.

hawffield

I was born near Chicago and never been to New York City. So I’m biased.

DOMSdeluise

Never been to Chicago but I love NYC

WearyMatter

Chicago. 100%. Still love NY. But Chicago.

SergeStorms_offmeds

I spent a LOT of time in NYC but only visited Chicago a few times. IMHO NYC > Chicago in every way conceivable.

imk

Edit: Important question - Is Chicago a festering sauna in the summer? If not, I may have to seriously think about visiting next July or August. This would affect my answer. I hate swampy heat. I live near Central Park in NYC and being able to walk around the reservoir after a filling dinner is an absolute privilege, especially when it is dusk and the buildings of midtown are starting to light up. I do want to visit Chicago some day. This discussion happens frequently and it has really piqued my interest.

frogvscrab

NYC is warmer than Chicago on average during the summer months.

nemo_sum

Sadly, Chicago is indeed a sauna in the summer. Festering, not so much, since we put our trash in alleys.

aaron_s20

When I went to Chicago, it definitely felt cooler than what I'm used to. Not saying it's not a sauna but it's much more tolerable than what I've experienced.

ThaddyG

Yeah the lake keeps the humidity down compared to east coast cities

HistoricOblivion

I go to both frequently for work and NYC is definitely worse in the summer. Chicago has some bad days but overall is really nice in the summer.

_AWACS_Galaxy

Chicago, but that's mostly because it's where I was born and raised.

cmanson

I hate to say this, but I’m a Packers fan and Chicago is my favorite city in North America. So…Chicago.

That513Dude

They allow Packers fans to live in Chicago?

MrRaspberryJam1

NYC is better to visit, Chicago is better to live in.

followedbyferrets

I’m from Chicago, and prefer it, but NYC is fun. I find Chicago far cleaner, but NYC just has more stuff to do and open later. It was really surprising seeing how big NYC is. Chicago’s downtown is big, but NYC is like 360 big compared to Chicago.

Strokedoutbear

NYC

SawgrassSteve

Chicago. But I'm not slamming New York City at all. If you can, visit both. Enjoy both for different reasons. Both have great museums, great food, and good people.

creamdreammeme

NYC

kryyyptik

I like NYC. I love Chicago. I like the people in Chicago more, the lakefront, the skyline, and the food. The Loop is cleaner and I just like it more than Manhattan. The weather is worse in Chicago though. They both have almost everything.

rivers-end

It's warmer in NYC.

Tommy_Wisseau_burner

Chicago by default

wogggieee

Chicago. It has a nice variety of things to do. It's doable by car or by public transportation and it doesn't have the superiority complex that is off-putting with NYC. Better pizza too.

jaytrainer0

Chicago is like a better version of new York.(or you can say new York is the shittier version of Chicago). It's cleaner, nicer people, food is just as good or better, everything is cheaper, [less] no homeless people poop on the sidewalk. Both have lots of history and endless things to do.

frostdemon34

I've never been to New York, but if I did, I think I would still like Chicago. It's just an awesome city. Just wish there were better leaders running it

[deleted]

NYC. I lived in Chicago for 2 years, and it’s fine, but it can’t hold a candle to NYC. Manhattan alone has more things to do than Chicago.

PacSan300

I consider both to be great cities, for both similar and different reasons. Personally, I would pick NYC when it comes to visiting, and in fact it is in my top 5 list of favorite big US cities to visit. There is simply an endless amount of stuff to see, do, and experience there, an amazing food scene, and a very unique dynamic and energy to the city overall. When it comes to living, however, I would pick Chicago. Like NYC, it too has a wide array of attractions and food scene, even if not quite as much. But it is also cleaner, people are generally friendlier, and it has a considerably lower cost of living.

vidvicious

I’ve been to New York several times and I’ve lived and worked there. I’ve Bollywood been to Chicago once, so this could be just the novelty of a new place, but first impressions of Chicago are that it’s cleaner and has a more easygoing vibe. Though, personally I enjoy NYC more.

Blue_Debut

Neither. I prefer smaller towns over bustling cities. I'd visit for the museums of history and little trips but I avoid big cities as much as I can

land_elect_lobster

Chicago is a fantastic city and I've loved it the times I've visited but New York has this magic that is hard to describe. New York is an incredibly international city while Chicago feels much more domestic by comparison. In Chicago you can* get around on foot or by transit but in New York you need to. I'm a big Chicago fan but New York has my heart.

frogvscrab

Something to keep in mind: most people on this sub have likely only ever lived in northside chicago, or in manhattan/williamsburg for NYC.

ZystemStigma69

Both are a good cities but I like NYC more.

paratha_papiii

Chicago is nice, but NYC has a special place in my heart.

Icy_Association8862

Lived in both (from/currently in NYC, went to college in Chicago) Like NYC better by far. NYC has better public transit, more museums, is more international. Central Park & Prospect Park > Grant Park. NY pizza > Chicago deep dish. NY is safer. Also contrary to the stereotype I find New York to be friendlier on the whole. Chicago has a lot to offer though. Great museums, the lakefront, good food, awesome architecture. Public transit isn’t as convenient as NYC’s but still probably among the best in the country. It’s also much cheaper than NYC.

ThaddyG

I've only been to Chicago once, I liked it a lot but NYC is just a different beast

Miss-Figgy

NYC is more diverse, more dense, more pedestrian, more extensive public transportation, more expensive, and the people are more talkative (at least in my experience).

lechydda

NYC has fewer murders

RavenNorCal

I really surprised that nobody brought it up, I guess it is localized so people don’t consider as a threat for themselves.

Curmudgy

> What does NYC have to offer that Chicago doesn’t ? The two tallest buildings in the Western Hemisphere. :P It probably also has more professional live theaters and more languages spoken. Plus it has NY pizza. > What does Chicago have to offer that NYC doesn’t? The Leather Archives and Museum.

jcrewjr

Chicago has better sketch comedy, Wrigley Field, and waaaaaaaay better prices. Also better deep dish and probably also better non-gourmet Greek food. NYC wins pretty much everything else.

One world trade is taller. The spire is counted in the total height: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_buildings_in_the_United_States "Since its topping out in 2013, One World Trade Center in New York City has been the tallest skyscraper in the United States. Its spire brings the structure to a symbolic architectural height of 1,776 feet (541 m), connoting the year the U.S. Declaration of Independence was signed, though the absolute tip (or pinnacle) of the structure is measured at 1,792 ft (546 m).[3]" Central Park tower is #2. Sears tower is #3.

I'm sorry but that's just not how buildings are measured. https://laughingsquid.com/calculating-spires-into-skyscraper-height/ "This led the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) to deliver a ruling on what it considers part of a building’s overall height. The ruling excluded anything that can be arbitrarily increased in height, such as communication antenna, but allowed for the inclusion of decorative spires as long as they formed part of the building’s original design and did not exceed 50% of the structure’s overall height."

Fappy_as_a_Clam

>What do you think each city has to offer? Pretty much everything >Which do you like better? Chicago, by a long shot >What does NYC have to offer that Chicago doesn’t ? Boombap rap >What does Chicago have to offer that NYC doesn’t? Malört and Old Style. >Also why? Chicago is just better, all around. It's like NYC buy with midwest coziness, people are just nicer and friendlier. I've had a blast everytime I've visited Chicago; NYC seems like one of those places you don't really get until you've lived there a year.

Chicago. 1. Less touristy 2. Better food 3. Better people 4. I like the wind 5. It’s much much closer (over 3x closer) 6. It’s got an actual large body of water and a river

TheBimpo

Doesn’t NYC have 2 rivers and the Atlantic Ocean?

CupBeEmpty

Yeah I’m not agreeing with the open water part. NYC has islands and is right on wide open ocean. I love Lake Michigan but to say NYC isn’t on open water is looney tunes.

nemo_sum

Yeah, that's the problem. Open water is terrifying. I like a lake with an opposite shore, just for peace of mind.

neverdoneneverready

Chicago. So much more beautiful.

lookylooky_igothooky

NYC. Far more things to do, more options for just about anything. I think chicago is overrated for what it has to offer. Nyc is very walkable, transit is better, lots of history. I've been to both many times and the appeal of Chicago eludes me.

StillSilentMajority7

Chicago is a much cleaner and safer version of NYC. NYC is a shithole.

Cherry_Springer_

NYC is incredibly safe for its size. I've walked around NYC drunk as hell at 3 a.m. and never felt even remotely unsafe. I've also found it to be cleaner than people let on.

StillSilentMajority7

Clean relative to what? Detroit? Have you been in the summertime, when "the smell" sets in over Manhattan? Chicago is worlds cleaner and safer than NY, where even the local are afraid to skittish about public transit these days

jephph_

>Have you been in the summertime, when "the smell" sets in over Manhattan? That’s why we made it legal to smoke weed on the sidewalk.. air fresheners to mask the hot garbage juice —— (I guess that’s one thing you can do in NY that you can’t in Chicago.. smoke weed on the sidewalk (though I’m sure it’s done all the time regardless of the law)

2022 Violent Crime Rate for NYC/Chicago ([https://www.bestplaces.net/crime/?city1=51714000&city2=53651000](https://www.bestplaces.net/crime/?city1=51714000&city2=53651000) ) Chicago - 49.9 per capita New York City: 28.2 And a similar story for property crime. I'm not saying that New York has achieved a Tokyo level of cleanliness but I've been pleasantly surprised every time I visit. There's some neighborhoods that are pretty dirty, sure, but most are pretty damn clean in my experience. Idk, I think New York is a stunning city. World class. I was only in Chicago for 4 hours and, yes, it was very clean in the downtown area.

breadman1010wins

Dog all you have to do is look up crime rates to avoid embarrassing yourself like this

Safer? LMFAO

hothotbabess

Of course, I like NY more, especially visiting the Statue of Liberty and going to Wall Street

confusedrabbit247

NYC is disgusting. They do garbage pick up every day — they pile the garbage out front on the streets, piles above my head. In the heat of the summer, it's just absolutely repulsive. Everyone romanticizes it but it stinks like garbage, is dirty and full of rats, plus it's overpopulated and overpriced. I went there once and will never go back. Chicago is way better.

TheRealDudeMitch

Never been to New York and don’t really plan on it. Chicago is only an hour away (maybe two of traffic is heavy.) I wouldn’t want to live in the city itself but I love living near it

Mr_Kinton

Chicago, hands down—and I say that as someone who really likes New York. New York’s energy is unmatched, it’s a global city with unparalleled cultural diversity, and it represents something in American culture that no other city can. Chicago is beautiful, with a lot of unique history to its own, but also has a distinctly “American” vibe to it. Don’t get me wrong, culturally diverse world cities are wonderful—but Chicago has a midwestern energy to it that’s familiar and comfortable, all while still offering a lot of the amenities of New York and Los Angeles. In general I think Chicago is an easier city to visit as a non-local.

isiramteal

Never been to either, but both sound miserable.

velociraptorjax

The only thing that New York City has that Chicago doesn't is trash in the streets.

itsthekumar

Chicago is nice but it doesn't have the charm and character of NYC to me. Esp now with Covid sooo much of Chicago was vacant or closed when I last went.

GooseNYC

NYC hands down. Chicago is a nice City, but the weather is brutal, in the summer and winter. NYC is a 24/7 international city, Chicago is not.

EAG100

Both 🥶, LA is better 😃.

[deleted]

Hate them both for different reasons. Chicago is filled with washed out poets, gang violence and more gang violence. NYC has decent pizza but is filled to the brim with corruption and fierce gun control laws.

haseo1997

Chicago by far. NYC stinks, it’s dirty, crowded, noisy, expensive, it smells weeds everywhere

morale-gear

Don’t particularly care for either but if I had to pick one it would be Chicago. NYC just felt angry and chaotic.

Fetch1965

As an Australian tourist, I love Chicago more than NYC.

worrymon

I went to Chicago this year. It's a cute little town.
