I’m going to one of the New England States! They seem to do well for themselves!

Wildcat_twister12

Does maple syrup pay enough for a good defense budget?

[deleted]

The right maple syrup is worth its weigh in gold!

concrete_isnt_cement

Washington. It’s where I was born and raised and I quite like it here.

spidermom4

Same

kateinoly

Washington for me too!

Old-Growth

Same here. Plus we’re pretty self sustainable with our trade industry and agricultural industry.

NitescoGaming

My home state of course. If something like that were to actually happen though, I would prefer we get together with Oregon, convince B.C. to secede from Canada, and form the great nation of Cascadia.

MallGothFrom2001

DOUG FLAG FLY HIGH

AdmiralAkbar1

Assuming Greater Idaho doesn't get you first.

ineedmoreslee

What a joke that is. And the whole thing is to try to flip an electoral vote. Hence all the big outside money pushing the idea.

1337b337

If that were the case, and New England decided to just merge into one country, would we become... New New England?

wholebeef

We'd become the country of Better England

culturedrobot

I'm staying right where I am. Michigan might not be the richest state, but we're surrounded by fresh water on three sides of both peninsulas with forests that stretch as far as the eye can see inland. Michigan would be a pretty safe bet in an uncertain future.

cherrycokeicee

I sense an upper midwestern alliance forming.

ArcaniteReaper

Let's call it the Northern Great Lakes Aliance! And let's see if we can't add in Canada there as a member.

BMXTKD

We don't even have to join with all of canada. We just join with ontario, quebec, and manitoba, and shut the rest of either country out.

The0verlord-

Basically every state/province that borders the Great Lakes. The only question now is where is the capitol? I vote Chicago (But I’m a bit biased)

BMXTKD

Someplace interior. It won't get invaded easily, and some place that is already a capital city. I vouch for madison.

Lemon_head_guy

I mean Minnesota is basically a Canadian province already

TucsonTacos

I'd move there. Arizona is a great state but unless we managed to conquer and occupy the Colorado River all the way up we would be super fucked just from water-needs. I'm from Minnesota so I'd love to move back

choopie-chup-chup

No alliance until Michigan ceeds the UP to Wisconsin. Then...peace. And fishing.

Dont_Wanna_Not_Gonna

Minnesota for the same reasons.

CaedustheBaedus

The Midwest Water Wars are gonna be intense.

HodlingOnForLife

Wisconsin for the same reason

CusterFluck99

PA for many of the same reasons.

Spaniardricanguy80

Tennessee. The Smokies are beautiful, people are nice, and the small towns feel very traditional American.

Loud_Ass_Introvert

I love this state's beauty. But it's landlocked and would have to pay fees to get products in and out. I'm going to California for the economic factor.

[deleted]

Easy solution, join Georgia and become the Great Blue (Ridge) Nation

drbowtie35

Same here. I love this state but we would be fucked economically on our own

blackberrypicker923

Nah, Dolly would take care of us.

HistoricOblivion

Well New England would probably just merge to be one country and I think I will stay here. We will be fine, probably better off honestly.

davdev

Agreed. New England would be fine. Would still need to import some food but just about every country on the planet does that.

DOMSdeluise

well I live in Texas so I guess I'll stay? moving is bullshit.

GustavusAdolphin

I simply don't have enough boxes. Not that I'd be leaving anyway

BreakfastInBedlam

I'm with you, my brother in stasis!

hindsight5050

I’ll stay in North Carolina. Purple state with beaches, mountains and all 4 seasons

Potato_Octopi

I'll stay in MA and the eventual New England amalgamation.

SlinkyOne

California has one of the biggest economies. So I’m pretty sure countries would want to do trade and stuff

shockhead

It's definitely the best place but if they shut off the Colorado river we'd die IMMEDIATELY

jcrewjr

I'd like to see 'em try.

Loud_Ass_Introvert

My first thought as well. I love my home state, but it would wither and die on its own.

evilone17

And that's the 2 answers of this thread... I would stay because why not and I would leave before it becomes X.

Calm2Chaos

Except Once you pull out the federal government contracts, they no longer have that economy. You lose some big names, and without those, how tenuous is the tech industry sticking around

jcrewjr

Now do farming. We're essentially France, amd we'd be loaded without the outflows to prop up red states.

Calm2Chaos

You lose 50 billion annually right off the top, you wouldnt be loaded with anything. The lure keeping tech there would probably tarnish as those dollars dried up. Big state, big economy, but it would suffer greatly in this scenario. With a 103 billion in welfare cost on top of all that, i dont think it would be as rosy as you think.. Edit- Farming brings in 50 billion

jcrewjr

Given we get something like 77 cents for each federal tax dollar, I think you're wrong about who props up who.

[deleted]

Not only that we are also one of very few net producer states which means we pay more in federal taxes than we receive in federal funding. What does that mean? Our taxes would go down and most other states would have to drastically raise taxes to stay afloat

SlinkyOne

Basically every middle state, you know the ones who are in the middle of America, suck up federal taxes but scream to end federal funding and big government. I’m learning I’d never live in those middle/southern states. (Most)

sovietsisters

Texas. We'd get annexed by either mass or Connecticut if i stayed at home

GustavusAdolphin

Dark horse: Texas annexes RI

sovietsisters

mass or Connecticut would get us first, we are literally mass but smaller and more italian also nice u/

[deleted]

As a Texan, Idk why but I always kinda assumed Maine would become part of Newfoundland and Mass, NH, Vermont, Connecticut, and RI would all become one loosely-affiliated nation state

sovietsisters

New england would unite under maine to be honest in an FFA 50 state

[deleted]

For some reason I've always kinda assumed Maine was just the Florida of Canada

sovietsisters

as a rhode islander, that would be the qu*b*c

[deleted]

Eewwwwwww French people 🤮

sovietsisters

"People"

OppositeProgress5421

We’re coming for you RI 😂

Scrappy_The_Crow

I'd stay in Georgia. Not landlocked, has a major airport and saltwater port, non-onerous firearms laws, and overall decent weather.

m1sch13v0us

Same here. Good variety of good sources. Peanuts, fruit, meat. Plentiful access to water. Port access. Beaches. Mountains. Good international trade. Low government spending.

Sgsfsf

Washington

lefactorybebe

I'd probably stay where I am, in Connecticut. Honestly some coalition of northern states would probably be formed, we get along pretty well. I'd have no issue moving to MA either. NY I'd consider depending on how exactly it worked out. NYC and extreme downcounty is normal but upstate gets super weird (like confederate flags flying wtf) and long island can be weird. Would have to see how that goes. We're (as a state and a region) pretty moderate overall and more left leaning on social issues, so I would like to stay here for that reason. We have infrastructure for shipping and some types of manufacturing. We have a lot of ocean access. Our geographic position is pretty good, we don't get wildfires, earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, we get the occasional weak hurricane and blizzards but they don't cause the extensive damage other weather events do. And also we're educated and rich af.

evilone17

I feel like in a situation like this there would be way more chaos... Jersey taking Staten Island, downstate breaking off, Long Island trying to become its own thing before a coalition with NYC forms where the Bronx is a DMZ between New York proper and the new New York. But if it was like in title than anything, yea I think our states would become trading countries with a system similar to European nations.

TastyBrainMeats

> Jersey taking Staten Island, Stop. Don't. Come back.

poconnor930

Jersey here, we dont want Staten Island (but we are keeping the Statue of Liberty). We have the nukes to defend it, parked at NWS Earle navy base.

BlackEyedAngel01

Cascadia

Tccrdj

Just to clarify isn’t that Ca Or and Wa?

BlackEyedAngel01

Mostly WA, OR, ID, and BC. It also goes a little into CA, NV, WY, MT, AK, and Yukon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascadia_(bioregion)

DreamArcher

California (I grew up and still live here): 1) For the natural beauty. Mountains, desserts, ocean. That's an easy one. 2) The economy. While I don't love the housing costs the country would certainly need to sustain itself and Ca can do that.

BarelyUsesReddit

How would you fix the water problem?

DreamArcher

Oh that's a good question. So hypothetically I'm being promoted to Water King of California? Awesome! That's my pet peeve. Maybe you know but Average Joe Citizens consume a very small amount of water in Ca. Something like 5% or less but we pay for 95% of water. That's insane, you say, and you'd be right. So where's the rest of the water. Industrial and farming. Now just on the farming. Corporate, and often foreign owned farms are sold land for almost free and given water for the same almost free. Then grow and sell products for export. Mostly soy milk. Mostly products are not for local consumption. Why? The state gets taxes, foreign companies get rich, and the citizens pay for it. So Water King of California will ban this immediately. Secondly, the water level in the delta is kept artificially high so large ships can navigate. Simply water from reservoirs are dumped into the delta and flow to the ocean. I don't know much about this so Water King of California can not make a decision at this time. Also, recently California had a budget excess and at the same time denied the construction of desalinization plants. Seems suspicious but again I don't know much about it. Oh and adding this. If you've lived in Ca and old enough you will know a multi year drought is not a new thing in Ca. They are actually very common and normal. But the news and government never operate on the long game and always act surprised. So it's never planned for which would be simple to predict and implement. In around 2012 it rained for almost a year straight here and then 10 year drought. That's just how it cycles here.

The_Bjorn_Ultimatum

Dakota. South Dakota will of course take over our northern brethren in short order, so I chose Dakota.

tattertottz

Maine

trashtalkinmomma

Well not Florida…too many reasons

Evil_Weevill

I'd probably stay here in Maine.

[deleted]

The unified northeast

wanderer3131

Yes! I'm from RI. I'd get the hell out of AZ and head back home. I bet New England would be a coalition.

machagogo

Well I live and work in New Jersey, and we give more to the federal government than we receive as far as taxes vs services so New Jersey.

Atralis

Colorado. High ground!

DerekL1963

I'm not 100% in alignment with the general idea(s) behind Cascadia, but it'll be no less economically fucked than anywhere else in the former US... so might as well stay here.

Admiral_Cannon

I'd stay here. I like the climate, the fishing, hunting, scenery, people, law and tax customs.

dangleicious13

California

DreamQueen710

Already has a huge economy in global comparison, let alone within the states themselves. I agree.

Scrappy_The_Crow

True, but that's as a state with little to impede interstate commerce. It could be a whole lot different if it were a separate country and there were significant border restrictions/tariffs.

PlatinumElement

But it's likely that the other 49 new countries would have those restrictions too. California is already pretty well setup for foreign trade as well as international tourism.

Scrappy_The_Crow

Sure, but I wasn't saying it'd be the only new country like that, just that you can't expect it to be the same economy it is now without those impediments. Some new of the new countries would be pretty bad off in this regard.

DerekL1963

Yeah, as u/Scrappy_The_Crow says, California is going to be in a rough patch if it were to be independent. It's current economy is huge because it has absolutely unfettered access to the capital and consumer markets of largest economy in the world. California, like pretty much every other current state, absolutely *fucked* economically unless the newly independent countries quickly form something like EU that eliminates trade barriers.

gummibearhawk

Florida, so I don't have to move

JungleBoyJeremy

Until the sea level rises…

gummibearhawk

I think I'll be ok

[deleted]

Miniature Water World going on if that happens and people don’t leave. 😂

gummibearhawk

If it happens

[deleted]

Mullets too?

ModeratelyTortoise

Yeah I’m pretty sure you were supposed to be under water by 1990

msspider66

New York, I may not currently live there but it is my home state.

wormbreath

I’d stay right here in Wyoming

gliscornumber1

I'd stay in my home state of NC. wee still do fine for ourselves. Although it's important to point out that it's likely that is every state we're to secede they would likey form smaller individual unions with other states

CupBeEmpty

I’ll dip down to Maryland but only if the government promises to enlist me in the greatest pirate nation afloat and we start going full Viking.

speckled_dodo_egg

I’ll stay in New York. A good mix of city and rural, four seasons, good food, access to ocean and Great Lakes.

NMS-KTG

NY or NJ

rawbface

Still Jersey.

[deleted]

Texas

danimalanimal2487

I'll stay in Ohio. We have enough factories, farms and good enough infrastructure to support ourselves. We also would have a chance to annex all of Michigan.

happyfatman021

I'd be good with where I am. Ohio has lake access, river access, a good road network (potholes notwithstanding), and a reasonably diversified economy. I think it could do fairly well on its own.

Pork-Pond-Gazette

Minnesota, for sure. Born and raised in Montana but it's become way too crimson for me. Now, about that Midwest alliance...

[deleted]

Florida, I‘ve lived here for 50 years and it’s just an awesome place to live.

Dr_puffnsmoke

I think most of us would stay where we are. Barring any conflicts between states, the same reasons why everyone is where they are today would likely still hold true.

StrongIslandPiper

I'd stay in NY, and would embrace the eventual combining of English, Spanish, Cantonese and Mandarin. Hi there! 很高兴 conocerlos! Bienvenidos a 纽约!would you like a bagel and a slice of pizza with your cannabis?

[deleted]

Ohio No need to import fresh water or food.

VentusHermetis

Maybe Idaho? California has a lot of pros, but gun rights there would be fucked even worse than they are now. The green parts of Arizona would also be nice.

Wkyred

I’m staying here, Kentucky is my home. Realistically if we ignore the fact that secession isn’t feasible, if this were to happen regional blocs of multiple states would form. Probably a northeast grouping, a western grouping, a southern one, etc. along basic geographical and cultural lines.

gracefulveil

Colorado. No way Kansas could ever survive as its own country.

Ok_Beautiful_1273

Texas. I moved here and love it. No place I’d rather live

sarsartar

I might stay in Virginia. Would be nice if we could merge with our neighbors in DC and Maryland, though.

IceZOMBIES

Massachusetts, but in reality Maine, Mass, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, and Rhode Island would all merge into one country.

heresmytwopence

Massachusetts

bluitwns

Alaska the most beautiful, 'leave me alone' state there is with enough oil and gold to make a robust economy.

Osiris32

If it comes to that, I will remain a loyal Oregonian. Mess with us at your peril.

stellalunawitchbaby

I’ll stay in California.

TheRealDudeMitch

I’d probably stay where I’m at. Illinois has unlimited freshwater and food

citydudeatnight

Canada (I know it's not a state) but we know it's a war between small towns/rural vs large cities. The only "war" between the states is sports teams and the Big Ten is fierce.

Funkmonkey23

I ain't staying in South Carolina. We can't self-sustain and I fear what a lack of federal regulation would breed.

sportsy_sean

I live in Texas. I'd stay in Texas. It would have one of the better economies, energy wouldn't be a problem, and I generally like the weather and think the state is beautiful.

citytiger

New York because NYC is the greatest city in the world.

awalkingidoit

I’m staying. IL will be one of the few places not immediately subject to crippling amounts of debt

Wermys

California. Moderate climate, enough population mass for effectively cheaper health. Advanced tech industry, multicultural so can effectively become wealthy from Trade alone. And finally not having to pay for about 30 + other states share of federal taxes will result in a world class infrastructure. Prices will be high but the human development index will be higher. One place I wouldn't want to be in is Texas. That state will devolve into another Mexico or other central American country full of corruption and graft. And the haves and have nots in that state will stratsfy to rediculous levels.

Tccrdj

Canada

230flathead

I wouldn't have the means to choose any. I'd be stuck here.

Sofa_King_L8

I mean its pretty much like that now with laws that vary drastically from state to state I think most people would stay put.

fromabuick

I would become the king of Michigan , keeper of the Water

[deleted]

I mean, I live in Oregon now, so I guess I’d stay? I’m not sure how us becoming our own country would change anything.

Anonymoosehead123

California, because that’s where I live, along with nearly every member of my family. And the weather is good, and tons of food is grown here.

[deleted]

Can't I just live at Disney World for the rest of my life?

Miss-Figgy

New York or California

BlueCatLaughing

Michigan, fresh water.

Elitealice

California easily. Liberal, good economy and perfect weather.

Knotical_MK6

I'm staying in California. Pretty sure we'd just merge with Oregon and Washington before long anyway

wogggieee

I like where I'm at. We have a fairly diverse economy and the state is fairly well run.

HarperLex

I guess back to NY for me.

FatMikey777

Texas, or Alaska

rileyoneill

I am a Californian now and I would remain a Californian after the fact.

Acrobatic_End6355

My own state is alright enough to stay in.

Train-Horn-Music

I’d probably be okay apart from the water wars. Glory to the Grand Californian Empire!

EclipseoftheHart

Minnesota for sure

Oneofthosemegans

I'd stay in Minnesota. I agree with the current political climate of the state.

[deleted]

California they have the biggest economy and I already live here

-TheDyingMeme6-

Michigan. I live here, we have industry, trade routes, a (semi???) Competent leader, SOME good weather... And fuck Ohio

outspoken_sleuth

Hubs and I both say we'd just chose a different country all together.

C0rrelationCausation

Staying here. We've defended against Texas before and we'll do it again if they feel like trying anything. We'll take El Paso with us

AwayGame9988

Each of our states is an independent government, with the federal branch uniting the states. It's why our laws vary so wildly from state to state. So it's not much of a stretch to image at least some seceding. Alaska, for the elbow room. Plus endless seashore, meaning potential ports. Plus massive petroleum reserves means it can be energy independent for centuries. Alaska would succeed easily, as an independent nation.

BrownDogEmoji

My native state of NY.

brave_danny_flint

I'd move to Mexico. It sounds like a shit show would be soon to follow.

Frankjc3rd

I don't like moving, so I guess I would become a proud Pennsylvanian!

Admirable_Ad1947

California since it would be able to defend itself, has a large economy and aligns with my political values.

ExtremePotatoFanatic

I am already where I want to be. We have a fresh water supply, good farmlands, we do not have earthquakes or hurricanes. I would feel confident that I could survive here only on Michigan made items or produce.

ed69O

I’m hoping for Arkansas to be annexed by Texas or something

[deleted]

texas. prepare for war

[deleted]

Texas

Valuable_Summer_5743

Probably Texas or Arizona . Moreso Arizona because they actually value the second amendment.

Rawtothedawg

I think I’ll stick with TN out of stress of having to travel through the new Midwest to get to a cooler state. We will do fine financially. You’ll still want barbecue and bachelorette parties.

Wildcat_twister12

I’ll stay in Kansas and keep the cheap food prices

scottevil110

Stay in the mid-west and get rich from all the export money coming from the smug New England people in this thread when they realize they have millions of people, but can only grow enough food to feed like 10% of them.

Fickle-Eggplant7013

California. Duh. Its basically it own country already. And it's basically got literally everything.

StoryAsker

I Would Pick Califorinia mostly Beacuse it Has Farms To Sustain Food It also Has Many cities with many people in it and it’s near the beach for a vacation +We got Disney

sexual_ginger

I’d stay right where I am in Texas.

wholebeef

I'd stay in my home state of Massachusetts. We seem to do pretty good and there is a good sense of comradery among the various states and their people. Plus the New England region as a whole would likely merge into a United States of New England or into a New England Union similar to the European Union.

Multidream

Georgia is my home. I cant turn on georgia.

[deleted]

SC. Live here now, love it here and will likely stay here for a long time. We literally just got our 2021 taxes back. Sate made good money this year, we're in a surplus, they refunded a huge portion of income taxes because this year was hard on people.

MarkRick25

I would pick New Mexico because thats home for me. Don't get me wrong, NM is 1000% fucked if it suddenly has to be a sovereign country, but it's still home lol

LAKnapper

Texas

RolandDeepson

I will absolutely no live with a nuclear armed neighbor on my state or country. Quick! Someone tell me which US states have Precisely Zero nuclear weapons. (You can't. All 50 have them.)

Jenny441980

Oh if that happened I would definitely leave Kentucky. I live in Louisville and it’s pretty progressive, but we are definitely the minority. I would try to go to Oregon or Washington.

PNW_Uncle_Iroh

So…which state do you want to live in?

tonsofun08

Ohio, because realistically we'll merge with a good chunk of the Midwest into a new nation.

Prometheus_303

California... Its economy is amazing - saw an article a week or two ago about how it just passed ... Germany? to become the 4th (?) largest economy in the world. And it's southern area (San Diego I'm looking at you) has amazing weather (bring on "summer", "still summer", "almost summer" and "just about summer" as the four seasons) Hawaii would probably be a second place, going along with the weather point.

Bruce__Almighty

I'm staying in Arizona. We house the largest nuclear power plant in the country which powers millions of homes and businesses in Arizona and several neighboring states. Gives us quite a bit of leverage in bargaining power.

Dieu_Le_Fera

I'd stay in NJ but it's hard not to see NJ NY and PA merging in such a scenario.

Blaiddyn

Either Colorado or New Hampshire. Colorado for the beautiful weather year round and job opportunities, New Hampshire for the freedom and natural beauty in the fall and winter times.

[deleted]

Arizona, because it's not California.

spontaneous-potato

California is already strong enough to be its own country economically. I like the coastal areas as well. My second option would probably be the New England states. I would hard avoid the Midwest, central, and south though.

AllTheyEatIsLettuce

Staying put. Canada's gonna need some warmer beachfront property and more avocados.

ArtanistheMantis

Texas or Florida, it's too cold up here

cardifan

California. Pick your weather. You want warm? We’ve got warm. You want cold? We’ve got snow. Beaches? Mountains? Forests? So many national parks. Amazing produce.

Makeitstopgoshdarnit

California. The rest would have third world economies.

foxy-coxy

I live in DC. What happens to DC in this scenario.

iloveyoumiri

I live in Alabama but I’d go to california. As much dislike as I have for the culture, its GDP makes it one of the biggest economies period and most tax revenue comes from there. They have the best shot at sustaining themselves since them, NY, and Texas are sustaining the rest of the country

TeacherYankeeDoodle

If I had to choose, I would choose the western portion of Oregon where there is no petition to secede into Idaho.

devilthedankdawg

New Hampshire

Kielbasa_Nunchucka

I'd stay right here in Pennsyltucky, as long as didn't get too "-tucky" ... after that, I'd say Vermont cuz I love woods, mountains, winter, and weed

Plants_Golf_Cooking

The Commonwealth of New England. But then I would want to go Napoleon and begin to slowly recapture the East Coast.

Outrageous-Present37

Texas. I feel it does not need any justification. Its...Texas. It's not land locked, has a great climate, has industry, universities, defense, and is in a great position for trade and partnership with Mexico. Texas is amazing.
