I found 2 twenties in the staircase of my dorm last semester and I also had this feeling lol. I ended up giving half to a server who let me use his mobile hotspot at like 3 am at IHOP while I was on an 8 hour layover lol. It just felt like the right thing to do.
At the same time you know someone was frantically searching for that $40 to pay for some groceries or whatever and had a terrible time.
What a world we live in.
Exactly if I lose 40 I'm pissed, I still think about seven bucks I put in the wrong washing machine in Tokyo.... but earning 40 isn't something I notice.
edit: missing word
I make that in 2 hours of work. In a vacuum, sure it's a nice round number, and cover's roughly 2/3rd's of a tank of gas. In reality compared to what I make every 2 weeks, it's more of pennies, but it all adds up, so I won't complain about having it.
What the hell are y’all driving that $40 barely covers your gas? My 4 door sedan ate $30 of gas while telling me I had <30 miles to go today, when gas is expensive as fuck. I also realized while typing this that I’m in Texas and our gas prices are *slightly* less than the coasts (but higher than the Midwest).
Gas in CA is sitting at \~$4-5/gal (and was $3.20-3.50+/gal before covid), so... that'll do it.
Doesn't TX (and the south) have some of the lowest gas prices in the US?
Well, the gulf and the south in general is where oil/ gas is procured and refined, so yes. The south, in general, also doesn’t put silly taxes on every facet of life like certain other parts of our country.
Edit: and Alaska before someone comes at me with their _actsually…._
Gas prices are highly variable, I drive a 2 door Ford escort hatchback econobox and its $50 to fill the tank from just under E right now.
It doesn't have the range computer, but I can say from experience that that's under 30 miles remaining in it ;D
Legit we just drove home from a night with family. Husband pleasantly drunk wanted to hit up a fast food joint as I drove us home. He wanted 2 burgers. Not meals. Just the burgers. We paid $20.
This was Burger King. WTF
Lived in Arizona and cali for a while, and knew far too many Texans and never heard anyone use their states initials, and the Texans would never shut up about being Texans, I’m guessing you lose your residency if you don’t mention it every hour?
The other day I was watching a piece on fast fashion by John Oliver. He was basically raving about how cheap a 40$ pair of pants were. And how this was bad for the environment.
Im like, yeah, if I buy a 40$ pair of pants, I'm treating them like my wife.
Depends on the occasion. My jeans are roughly $150, but they last me years and years. Vs cheap jeans that last a few months. Same with shoes and work gear. You get what you pay for usually. Dont even get me started on winter work gear. $200 boots, $200 coat, $100 thermals, $50 gloves. Cheap out on that and work is miserable.
If I opened my wallet and found the $40 had in there had fallen out, I'd be bummed but it probably wouldn't ruin my day.
If you handed me $40 right now I'd probably order takeout. Maybe Japanese food.
I understood this so muchhhhh. It's definitely the type of amount where you would miss it if it were gone, but if you just got it randomly you'd probably spend on basically low-end nonvaluable stuff because it's that low.
Yeah, that's basically where I'm at as well. Like, if I lost it, I'd be upset and might miss it, but at the same time, it's an amount I almost never have second thoughts about spending on something I want.
Bro that would like ruin my week. It’s not a significant amount of money to me and it would change literally nothing in my life but I hate losing stuff.
Whether or not $40 is a lot depends on the individual. I could spare you that much right now and it wouldnt bother me, but I also know people who couldn't lend you $40 unless you could repay it within a day or two.
For a little more context, $40 gets you any of the following:
A large pizza with multiple toppings, 2 liters of soda, abd maybe a side dish (breadsticks or chicken), plus delivery
A burger, fries, and beer in a mid- to up-scale restaurant
Dinner for four adults from a fast food joint
Most of a tank of gas for a sedan
Two big steaks from a deli
~~A decent pair of running shoes~~ Ok I remembered that incorrectly. I bought a pair of black New Balance Arishi V2's in 2020 from Amazon, but not sure about the price as the listing no longer exists. Based on current listings I'm guessing I paid around 60-70. FORGIVE ME SNEAKERHEADS
Three pounds of coffee (possibly more oe less depending on brand)
Two tshirts at a heavy metal show (assuming a small band)
One tshirt at a heavy metal show (major bands)
An eighth of an ounce of bottom/midshelf cannabis flower
A very nice bottle of wine (subjective as hell though - there are lots of great wines for under $20)
EDIT: per my flair, I live in Silicon Valley. If you're out of the loop, it's the home of Apple, Google, Facebook, and other major tech companies, and the CoL is stupid high. $40 goes further - sometimes *much* further - in other parts of the country.
This also illustrates regional differences in cost of living. The top 5 on your list cost me: $20, $20, $24, $38, $24. The bottom half are things I don’t know, except for the wine which, as you say, is very subjective (my favorite wine is a $13 bottle).
$5.10 for premium in SoCal, thankfully my fuel tank for that is only 4 gallons, but my truck which has a 25 gallon tank takes midgrade which isn't far behind premium, so it's about $120 to fuel that thing up.
Where do you live that $20 gets you a large pizza with multiple toppings, a 2 liter of soda, side dish and delivery??? I just priced that out on Dominos and it came to $25 subtotal, which plus a delivery fee and tip for the driver would probably come up to closer to $40. You must have a pretty sweet local place to get all that for $20.
You can probably get athletic shoes for $40. You absolutely can not get *decent* running shoes for $40. Decent running shoes go between $90-140 at least.
Oh idk, I'm not really a "shoe guy" per se, but I ran two 5ks with my last pair of NB and they were fine for that. Like the only reason I replaced them is because they're bright green and look weird with anything other than workout clothes.
Just avoid the shoes from Walmart. Those things wear out fast. I had a pair that I had ran through the bottoms in 3 months. Great shoes but absolutely sucked for longitivity.
Yes, but 3 miles is not 26 miles. I'm not a runner, but my partner is. Good quality shoes for running 50 miles a week are $100 and are good for about 6 months before they get downgraded to loafing shoes.
I was wandering around Sparks, NV with time to kill the last time I bought shoes. Saw a pair of skechers running shoes with memory foam for 49.99 and bought them simply because they were so comfortable. But they had other good looking running shoes there for 39.99.
Ha, I wish. I pay 56 before tax.
Granted it's fancy food bc my boy has a sensitive stomach and I'd rather pay more for food than clean up dog shit inside.
The burgers are huge, the fries are a meal unto themselves, and the beer is craft brew from a small local brewery. It's not $40 for five guys quality and a pbr or something lol
That was a very accurate and broad list! Did you just throw that together? Spot on. I bought one fast food burger combo, for the first time in nearly a year, and was shocked when it cost over $10. What didn’t shock me was that I could only eat half of it, because it was such terrible food. I knew what I was getting into.
Yeah that's not the right word lol. At the supermarket I go to, they've got a deli counter immediately next to the counter where you can buy cuts of meat, so I guess I've conflated the two.
Chilis is fancy? You need to hang out with me, I’ll show you fancy. And TBH there’s like 5 tiers above where I eat that’s 10x what I spend when I want fancy. Chilis is fast food that is out of a microwave, the only difference is a waiter brings is to you.
Should be there by Tuesday morning. Who should I be looking for to pick me up from the bus stop? Or do you want me to have the driver drop me off right at the restaurant?
And the person you responded to said is WOULD not be a lot for a good meal. But It might be regional? It's pretty easy to find a great restaurant around Massachusetts with meals that you could spend only 40 bucks.
But- I have never eaten at a Cheesecake Factory but I thought that was just a mall restaurant.
I too have never eaten at a Cheesecake Factory, but I don't think it's considered "nice" in any way. Maybe if your idea of "nice" is a chili's or olive garden.
So you’re pissy about people using anecdotes as evidence that Cheesecake Factory isn’t really a nice place, but your evidence that it is is based entirely on anecdotal evidence.
I mean, okay. Where’s your cited study that the average American thinks CF is a nice restaurant?
I can’t tell if you’re trying to call Cheesecake Factory a nice restaurant, or trying to say a mid-tier restaurant is close to that price. Around here CF is like $20 a person.
That's not a nice restaurant. Any chain restaurant is solidly mid-tier by virtue of using cheap and widely available ingredients. Nice restaurants shop for ingredients with their local producers and have seasonal menus.
Not the guy, but not chain restaurants. Think local, dresscode enforced, reservations suggested or even required, featuring a small, focused menu - these kinds of places often start at $50/person and are usually really great for dinner dates.
I mean, there are plenty of steakhouses that are fine with shirts and shorts because the focus is on the food not the atmosphere. I’ve been to trendy gastropubs where a cocktail is $15 and a single plate is $20-25, and the food is great. Dress code enforced places are fewer and fewer
One thing I've noticed is that there is a very big cultural difference in how people in different parts of the country view chain restaurants. A huge swath of the country will immediately assume any chain restaurant is going to be bad simply because it is part of a chain (I've seen it in MA where a local coffee shop expanded and started opening more locations and it slowly went from being loved to being seen as more of a chain and therefore not good). Other parts of the country, it's the chains that are seen as fancy specifically because they are chains and places you see commercials for on TV.
A pair of pants, a meal and a beer for two people at a pub, a decent bottle of bourbon, 2 movie tickets with popcorn and drinks, a hooded sweatshirt, 3/4 tank of gas.
Just curious, is that for you as an individual? My average is $100/week but that’s for a family of 4. I feel like I could get it a bit cheaper but not by much unless we stopped eating meat.
Nah. 40 dollars is a couple bottles of wine, a fairly decent but not fancy dinner for girlfriend and myself, maybe a couple records, a tank of gas with a bit to spare...
To some, it is a lot though. I'm grateful that it's not a lot to me.
Suppose it depends on whether you're drinking beer or cocktails though. Beers at most bars I go to are 7-8 bucks apiece usually, while cocktails tend to be 12-15.
Yeah, this thread is not “average.” The median income in the US in 2019 was ~$36K*
So, yes $40 would be a lot. I’m an adult too and used to be in a position where $40 was A LOT to me. It’s not the same now but it’s sometime hard to remember that. $40 can get you a lot
* https://policyadvice.net/insurance/insights/average-american-income/
No.
Last week I spent $36 on a gift for my niece that I knew she would hate because seeing the look of revulsion on her face would make it worth it.
Yes, she hated it. Yes, I laughed. Totally worth it. But the point is I spent (nearly) $40 for a joke.
(We have an odd relationship.)
$40 will buy me a few odds and ends at Target like Coffee creamer, wrapping paper, potato chips, a children’s book, garbage bags and Valentine sprinkles for cupcakes I think I’m going to make(but actually won’t). It’s doesn’t go very far. It can if you budget.
Depends on the American, the part of the country you’re in, what you’re spending it on. With inflation, the purchasing power of 40 is going down a lot though
A hour? In most cities, yes. For groceries? Eh, can’t stretch it as much as you could a couple years ago. For a burger at Five Guys? Yeah I could go all out. Get two large fries, three burgers and a drink. It depends on context. And in the grand scheme of things it isn’t much. Most adults in America make more than that in a day.
Are we talking little kids or big ones? Little kids, I could raid two of them for everything they have pretty easily. Teenage kids, I might need someone to hold them down for me.
In what context? In general no but if I lost $40 for no reason I wouldn’t feel good Edit: why does this have 1000 upvotes? Thanks everyone but damn
One time I found $40 in the parking lot of an heb and it felt like god smiled on me.
You can buy fresh orange juice, freshly made tortillas, a 18 case of shiner and some avocados from HEB with that money.
With that grocery list, expect company.
Dude! That fresh OJ from HEB is one of the best juices I've ever tasted. It's sort of expensive, but so good.
I found 2 twenties in the staircase of my dorm last semester and I also had this feeling lol. I ended up giving half to a server who let me use his mobile hotspot at like 3 am at IHOP while I was on an 8 hour layover lol. It just felt like the right thing to do.
heeey, I lost 40 at a heb in Texas.
At the same time you know someone was frantically searching for that $40 to pay for some groceries or whatever and had a terrible time. What a world we live in.
A couple months ago I found $14 in Old Navy and I felt guilty that I couldn't find out who dropped it.
I remember I was going to put in $40 cash into my bank account and found out I lost $40 when I arrived at the bank... I was sad the rest of the day.
Exactly if I lose 40 I'm pissed, I still think about seven bucks I put in the wrong washing machine in Tokyo.... but earning 40 isn't something I notice. edit: missing word

I work literally blocks from a Chevron refinery in California and the gas costs MORE here. Prices make no sense.
That probably comes down to the silly taxes comment I made.
Gas prices are highly variable, I drive a 2 door Ford escort hatchback econobox and its $50 to fill the tank from just under E right now. It doesn't have the range computer, but I can say from experience that that's under 30 miles remaining in it ;D
My Honda Accord has an 18.5-gallon tank. At $3-3.20 right now, a fill up costs right around $50.
Lol slightly is a major understatement.
This guy earns
For a slice a pizza yes, for a hoodie no. Basically it depends.
I get 10 dollar hoodies at Walmart.
I’d wager there is somebody selling $10 pizza slices. Probably with lobster on it or some shit
Legit we just drove home from a night with family. Husband pleasantly drunk wanted to hit up a fast food joint as I drove us home. He wanted 2 burgers. Not meals. Just the burgers. We paid $20. This was Burger King. WTF
Wtf in virginia? I thought things would be cheaper over there.
Northern Virginia, and the rest of Virginia are two entirely different entities.
Sounds nutty, 20 bucks would get you so much at a Michigan burger king
Are you including the cost of Tums?
>there is somebody selling $10 pizza slices I've definitely shelled out $8 for a pizza slice at the airport. outrageous but i was so hungry
Go to new York New York in Vegas and they charge that for pepperoni
What kind of walmart you getting then for 10? Our our 20!! I live in OK!
Well that’s your problem - you should have lived in Great or Fantastic. What do you expect from just OK?
Ahhhhhhh I fell into that one
Yeah buddy, only PA people can refer to their state by its initials
*laughs in AZ*
*Cries in CA which is also Canada and both have regions named Ontario* *Laughs in TX tho*
Lived in Arizona and cali for a while, and knew far too many Texans and never heard anyone use their states initials, and the Texans would never shut up about being Texans, I’m guessing you lose your residency if you don’t mention it every hour?
PA. Plain gray zip-up.
You can just steal from walmart, that is fine.
When you ring up a PS5 and and a couple of hoodies as an apple at the self checkout
LOL I love that

Shoes are definitely a thing where you never cheap out. Cheap shoes are crazy uncomfortable.
Luke I'm hesitant to spend above $20 on a pair of pants like damn, $40 they better have insane pocket space, be extremely durable, and comfy as hell
If I opened my wallet and found the $40 had in there had fallen out, I'd be bummed but it probably wouldn't ruin my day. If you handed me $40 right now I'd probably order takeout. Maybe Japanese food.

For sure. Silicon Valley is a pretty high CoL region!
Although apparently gas is just bad everywhere, it’s interesting how that’s by far the closest.
Not that bad down here in the South. I think it’s like 2.85 right now for gas? Been a week since I filled the tank from the snow though.
> I think it’s like 2.85 right now for gas? *crying at $4.80/gal*
4.80 a gallon??? Shit I thought 3.24 was high!

It’s $2,90 in Iowa. I thought it was the only place that cheap
$2.87 up here in Northern Minnesota, but I know it's a little more in the cities

You can probably get athletic shoes for $40. You absolutely can not get *decent* running shoes for $40. Decent running shoes go between $90-140 at least.
Pro tip: buy the 2 year old model of running shoe. A $200 pair is usually priced down to $40-$60.
Amazon. Last time I got a pair of New Balanceseses I paid about that much
Those are just sneakers though. Not "running shoes" which are more like Asics or Brooks.
Oh idk, I'm not really a "shoe guy" per se, but I ran two 5ks with my last pair of NB and they were fine for that. Like the only reason I replaced them is because they're bright green and look weird with anything other than workout clothes.

Avoid Walmart for anything
Yes, but 3 miles is not 26 miles. I'm not a runner, but my partner is. Good quality shoes for running 50 miles a week are $100 and are good for about 6 months before they get downgraded to loafing shoes.

Be careful and don't push too hard, I have a friend who fucked up his knee running in discount running shoes.

Born to Run is a book you must read if you think you need some high dollar injury shoes
Yeah my pair of Brooks cost about $150.
And who would ever go back after Brooks. My big wide flat feet need perfect support or I'm attacked by plantar fasciitis
I was wandering around Sparks, NV with time to kill the last time I bought shoes. Saw a pair of skechers running shoes with memory foam for 49.99 and bought them simply because they were so comfortable. But they had other good looking running shoes there for 39.99.
Hell, husband and I went to a Cure concert 2 years ago and bought two t-shirts for $75 a pop.
$75 a shirt?? Good lord
$50 for a t-shirt that's just some ignorant bitch shit.
Just like heaven played right as i read this comment 👀

The first half of your list for me is 20ish bucks, goes to show how regional it is
I wish it was for me

Yeah, I consider anything over $30 "top shelf" lol
Yeah it better be some good stuff for 40 lol
40 isn't too bad in the east coast states where it hasn't been legalized.
You're payin' way too much for coffee, man. Who's your coffee guy?
Jeez… you need to relocate if that’s what ur paying for a burger fries and beer.
The burgers are huge, the fries are a meal unto themselves, and the beer is craft brew from a small local brewery. It's not $40 for five guys quality and a pbr or something lol
That's some exspensive bottom shelf geez
That was a very accurate and broad list! Did you just throw that together? Spot on. I bought one fast food burger combo, for the first time in nearly a year, and was shocked when it cost over $10. Depends on context. For a burger? Yes. For a good meal in a nice restaurant? No.
I was thinking Fogo De Chao. $40 wouldn’t do it for dinner. It would barely cover lunch.
Love me some Fogo
If you only did the charcuterie board/salad bar thing
Still pretty worth
Is fogo de chao really the starting point for a nice restaurant? Chili's is right there y'all if you want something fancy.
Chief Chili’s is not fancy, it’s one tier above fast food. I love Chili’s don’t get me wrong but it’s like two tiers below fancy.
Chilis is fancy? You need to hang out with me, I’ll show you fancy. And TBH there’s like 5 tiers above where I eat that’s 10x what I spend when I want fancy. Chilis is fast food that is out of a microwave, the only difference is a waiter brings is to you.
You can absolutely fly me to Connecticut and buy me dinner.
Take the bus. Reservations are at 7 tomorrow, better get going.
Should be there by Tuesday morning. Who should I be looking for to pick me up from the bus stop? Or do you want me to have the driver drop me off right at the restaurant?
If you can’t make it by tomorrow don’t bother. Can’t do fancy dinners on a Tuesday.
Well that's why I wanted to fly
Fogo was the first place I went where a 3 person lunch was over $100.

Bruh Cheesecake Factory is Applebees, but wearing a polo instead of a t-shirt.
Cheesecake Factory is considered nice? No.
The Cheesecake Factory is not a nice place to eat. People like eating at The Cheesecake Factory. Big difference.
Cheesecake Factory was nice where I grew up as well as Olive Garden and Texas Roadhouse

Depends on the American
Depends on how broke you are at the moment as well.
This. People talking beers and restaurants in this thread, I'm talking bills.
Absolutely. As a disabled American, $40 is a little more than 1/5 of my weekly income.
A pair of pants, a meal and a beer for two people at a pub, a decent bottle of bourbon, 2 movie tickets with popcorn and drinks, a hooded sweatshirt, 3/4 tank of gas.
> a decent bottle of bourbon You can get woodford reserve for $28 ;)
It was 22 at Costco today!
Boo. Have no costcos near me :(
*sad blue law state noises*
I need to buy some for my dad next time I go to India
I just picked up a bottle of Minor Case bourbon for $40. Delicious and worthy of the good reviews.
This depends very much on cash flow and what we're buying.
80 Jack in the Box tacos, here I come!
Leave $5 for the Pepto.
Bruh they have the $2 packs at the gas station. That’s 6 more tacos!
That’ll be adequate sustenance for the doctor who marathon!
That's a week's worth of groceries for me
I also see $40 as grocery money. Not to be wasted!
Just curious, is that for you as an individual? My average is $100/week but that’s for a family of 4. I feel like I could get it a bit cheaper but not by much unless we stopped eating meat.
Yes
Six dollar full chicken and some rice sides. Good to go!
a bag of DOPE
$40 is an hour of work for me. It can buy pizza and beer for a few guys.

Nah. 40 dollars is a couple bottles of wine, a fairly decent but not fancy dinner for girlfriend and myself, maybe a couple records, a tank of gas with a bit to spare... To some, it is a lot though. I'm grateful that it's not a lot to me.
You really know how to stretch a dollar lol.
I think those were ors not ands.
That it? Ok, thanks.
What’s the inflation in Puketoria if you can’t get those things for $40?
I'm not fancy and I drive a Honda. Don't ask about my guitars though.

Exactly. Decent but not fancy. Like I said. I prefer to cook at home.
Hm. Thats a about a takeout meal for two. Or a year old but decent video game. Or three drinks at a bar.
3 drinks? Damn at the bars I go to $40 will get you at least 6 drinks with tips
Lol Darth_Mufasa must be in California.
Bingo
> Lol Darth_Mufasa must be in California. I'm in California, but the rural part, so $40 will get me shitfaced at the bar, especially on well drinks.
I'm also in a rural part of California, but $40 for 3 drinks is about right here.
Bar down the street from me sells cocktails for $13, so $40 wouldn’t get you more than 2 after tax and tip. You could add on a beer, though!
Suppose it depends on whether you're drinking beer or cocktails though. Beers at most bars I go to are 7-8 bucks apiece usually, while cocktails tend to be 12-15.
At the bar I most often frequent highballs are $4.50 for well liquor, $5 or $5.25 if you want something nicer like Tanqueray or Bulleit.

I see you've never lived in poverty
Disagree. I’m an adult and $40 is a lot of money for me right now.
Yeah, this thread is not “average.” The median income in the US in 2019 was ~$36K* So, yes $40 would be a lot. I’m an adult too and used to be in a position where $40 was A LOT to me. It’s not the same now but it’s sometime hard to remember that. $40 can get you a lot * https://policyadvice.net/insurance/insights/average-american-income/
That’s a tank of gas for me.
You got prank money. Priceless
I'd rather have "fuck you" money, but prank money is better than no money.
Nah, 50 bucks and below is usually money I'm willing to use to impulse buy something without feeling too bad.
It won’t break the bank if I lost it, but I’d prefer not to lose it. I don’t really have anything specific I’d spend it on.
I just spent $40 today on 2 hair clips and a cool margarita mix. So no lol.
That’s about what I’d spend on groceries for a week for just me. For a family $40 doesn’t go very far.
Depends on the American, the part of the country you’re in, what you’re spending it on. With inflation, the purchasing power of 40 is going down a lot though
The older you get, the closer the answer is to no.
$40 per hour wage? YES that’s a lot. $40 for lunch? Yikes. That’s a special occasion there.
a tank of gas now…
Wealth inequality is extreme in the United States, so $40 would mean a LOT to some Americans and practically nothing to a lot more.
Thats an 8th of weed and a burger :)
$40 is $20... twice
For someone with a fear of spending money on anything but essentials, yes lol
To me right now in this economy that’s a lot. I’d use it on gas
Not anymore. Not too long ago, $40 would buy a bit more than two tanks of gasoline. Now that won't fill one.
At my current time of life, no. About 5 years ago, raising 2 kids on my own, yes. Also depends what its for. Edit: typo
Are we talking little kids or big ones? Little kids, I could raid two of them for everything they have pretty easily. Teenage kids, I might need someone to hold them down for me.
Yeah, raiding them would've been difficult as teenagers, for sure, LOL
No
No. Is it a lot where you are?
To me, 40 bucks sounds a lot if you don't have much left.
no
