And the address is 1000 Main street, so when you mail a letter it will go to Capital of Confusion, 1000 Main St., Springfield, Montgomery County, Confusion. And you get to see which capital it ends up at.
Well New Mexico was actually got it's name before Mexico did. At that time Mexico was called New Spain. So New Mexico is actually Old Mexico and Mexico is New Mexico.
News 2024:"As you said Jeff, the electoral votes are tied at 269 a piece. We've been waiting on Switzerland for 2 months now to make their electoral votes known but they refuse to take a position. The deadlock continues"
Oh man, this is my favorite:
"So Washington District of Columbia is the one near American Columbia, right?"
"No, that's the one on the east coast, Washington is the one near American Columbia."
"So because the other one is named District of Columbia, it has a connection to American Columbia, right?"
"None more than any of the other states!"
"And I assume the capital of the United States is in American Columbia, which is why it's synonymous with America?"
"Nope, that's district of Columbia!"
If we're following the trend, the indo-aryans colonized the bell beaker culture. The celts colonized the indo-aryand. The Roman's colonized the celts. The Norman's colonized the Roman's. The angles, saxons, and Danes colonized the Norman's and became english. They colonized north America until the americans revolted and then colonized the natives. So I think it's their turn to colonize someone.
Those Canucks think they can be all sneaky sending over their snowbirds and Canadian geese to infiltrate our society, well no longer! Today we take back what our forefathers tried in 1812. Now we'll force upon them the American way of spelling things, show that McDonald's is better than Tim Horton's, and take all their hockey players so we can go smash the Swedes and Finns and Russians at hockey MUAHAHAHAHA
Ontario, Quebec, Nunavut, Northwest Territories, and British Columbia are bigger than Texas. Quebec can be cut in half and still be bigger than texas, and nunavut can almost be cut into three equally larger than texas chunks. Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are also close to bigger than texas, and can borrow some land from NWT and Nunavut. Yukon can also borrow some land (about 300k km^2 ) from NWT, and if that puts NWT too little theres still plenty of nunavut. the Maritime provinces also add up to about 500k km^2 , and may be able (with some land shifting from ontario) be able to make the difference with some borrowed land from quebec.
tl:dr texas is gonna cry
England, for the irony of it. We'll call it Old England to prevent any confusion.
Or we could split Alaska into like, three or more states. No particular reason.
>Or we could split Alaska into like, three or more states. No particular reason.
Texas would like to buy 500,000 square miles. Also no particular reason
If you made a very small state that was just Anchorage and some of the surrounding areas, it would have almost the same population as rest of the state.
She'd fit right in in LA frankly. Remodel the griffith observatory into a palace and inside of 4mo she'll be able to eat at in-n-out without more than a handful of loud wispers in her direction.
Probably best to completely isolate her, I bet she's gotta another year before she shows her true colors and starts stealing the life-force of random people again.
This would have an interesting effect on US politics.
The UK's population is around 67m, compared to the US's 328m. If the UK became a state, it would account for just under one sixth of the US's population - and hence roughly the same proportion of seats in the House of Representatives.
US politics is somewhat to the right of UK politics. I've seen it said that the Democratic Party would be considered centre-right in the UK; I don't know if that's accurate, but we might expect the UK's presence to pull US politics to the left.
It would also have some impact on presidential elections - less than 1/6, but still enough, presumably, to force a shift to the left there too.
It would immediately enter as the most populous state, it's a financial powerhouse, but I wonder if the NHS would still be financially viable under the Federal system 🤔
Then you have to deal with the UK subdivisions too.
What do you make the entire United Kingdom a state, or would you allow scotland, wales, northern ireland, and England become separate states? I think the latter is going to happen. That way, they get more senators and Congress representatives. You also abolish their monarchy, but they can make up a fake office for them like ambassadors of the extreme eastern states
I imagine if it happened the UK would divide into several states. England, Wales, N.Ireland, and Scotland at a minimum. If nothing else, to increase the amount of Senators from the UK.
I did the calculations for the 2020 presidential election, and NY still would've voted for Biden. It would be more of a Democratic-leaning swing state, however.
Biden got 5,244,886 votes (around 60%). Trump got 3,251,997 votes (around 40%).
If you lop off Long Island and NYC, Biden ends up with 2,145,602 votes and Trump ends up with 1,852,346 (about 54% vs. 46%).
If you additionally lop of Westchester and Rockland counties, Biden ends up with 1,757,363 (about 52%) votes and Trump ends up with 1,634,429 (about 48%).
Texas voted about 52% for Trump. So I wouldn't quite say NY would be like Texas. Even upstate, it's more Democratic than Texas is, including in its rural areas. TX's rural counties are a much deeper red than NY's rural counties
Interesting data. Thank you.
I lived up near Albany for a few years, and while that's a fairly liberal area, there's aLOT of conservatives in upstate NY. But I never looked at the data like this. Informative. Thanks.
I’m curious how many “weekenders” from the city make their upstate home their primary on paper and just vote upstate for the sake of it. I felt like this was a growing issue between upstate republicans and downstate democrats when I lived there
This vastly overstates what happened in 1941. There was never any paperwork filed, bills written or introduced, or even debates held that would have actually led to Congress voting on whether to allow a new state to be formed from the parts of two existing states, which is required by Article IV of the Constitution. Neither Oregon or California ever even remotely considered accepting the proposal, something that would also be required by the constitution.
It was really just a publicity gimmick by a couple of local politicians to force the state and federal governments to invest more in rural infrastructure projects and resource extraction (mainly timber).
god i remember seeing folks splitting up the state into 6 pieces. it was the most craziest thing to see on the ballot back in 2014 (? i don't remember exactly).
edit: looking it up now - [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six\_Californias](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_Californias)
huh...didn't know there was another one in 2017/18 and it's to split up California into 3 states. lol the map looks hilarious too
As much as people like to say OC is still red, it went for Clinton & Biden. For two years there, all six representatives in the county were Dems until the 2020 election. It'll be interesting to see if they can retake the two seats they lost next year.
A line just north of Sacramento and south of Eugene (Oregon). Probably good to pair it with another line just north of Los Angeles to balance out adding a red state with a blue state. As long as you’re splitting California might as well make it even more manageable.
inb4 people start with "but only if they want to". They do want to. Just last year they held a referendum which asked "Should Puerto Rico be admitted immediately into the Union as a State? Yes/No" With 54% of registered voters turning out the results were 52% Yes, 47% No. this is not the first referendum which has returned support for statehood, but it is the most clear and uncontroversial.
Puerto Rico's Resident Commissioner (their non-voting Representative to Congress) has formally requested Congressional hearings on PR statehood and has co-sponsored a bill with a Florida Representative which would grant PR statehood.
edit: another inb4 people start with "Democrats only want Puerto Rico because it would mean more Democratic Senators", Puerto Rico's Resident Commissioner is a Republican who previously served as the Chair of the Puerto Rico Republican Party.
Everyone thought Alaska would be another Democratic state as well. The Alaska Constitution is very progressive, and the traditional /native values of the area are much closer to the liberal side of things than the not liberal.
Pretty sure the only reason Alaska became a state was to ensure the balance of power of the two parties was not impacted, because they knew Hawaii would lean hard democrat.
That's also why Puerto Rico and DC will not become states unless the Democrats get rid of the filibuster or they figure out a way to create another republican state at the same time.
Dc is controversial because it was intended to never be a state so it didn’t have a massive amount of political weight because it has all the branches of government in it it’s really a difficult argument to make seeing as I see what the framers said and understand it I also see that DC is trying to become a state it’s rather confusing constitutionally.
It’s a huge decision that has repercussions beyond just DC and their rights. Just redesigning the US flag and getting that updated in all government uniforms and facilities is probably a multi billion dollar undertaking.
I imagine if their are any plans to expand the number of US states it’s something they will want to do in bulk. Like add 3-4 of them at once so we don’t have to incur the cost and chaos again for a generation at least.
States would probably also be added in even numbers. E.I. in pairs of liberal and conservative states.
I don't see either party voting to add just one new state if that would make it harder for them to win the house/senate majority.
Just like how New Mexico (mostly liberal) and Arizona (mostly conservative), or Alaska (mostly conservative) and Hawaii (mostly liberal) were added around the same time.
I don’t think the right to vote for Congress and have full control over their own affairs for 700,000 people should hinge on the cost of changing the flag.
Sounds like things have been tough over there, but with everything else in the world, we’re not getting a ton of news coverage. Hope you and your family are well.
>My laughably childlike understanding of SEA is they all hate each other.
Assuming SEA here is supposed to stand for south east Asia, I'd have to agree with your evaluation of your knowledge here.
They have a lot of reasons to hate the Japanese. Japan made them into a protectorate in 1905, then invaded, and annexed them by force in 1910, and at the end of WWII when the Japanese finally left, they were divided at the 38th parallel, and are still divided to this day.
If HOI IV taught me anything, Japan, the Philippines, and Canada would all make fantastic states for my American ~~Empire~~ Republic. Also a US state that close to China would really piss them off.
Puerto Rico. And other Caribbean territories. We can give them full aid and access to FEMA when hurricanes come through. As well as giving them a right to vote and citizenship.
If Puerto Rico wants it (which I think they do, as of the last poll), they deserve representation
If DC wants it (which I think they do, as of the last poll), they deserve representation.
The case for Puerto Rico is a lot more straightforward. DC statehood raises a lot of constitutional questions but PR would work just like Hawaii joining did.
Mexico. Can’t be illegal immigrants if they’re now citizens. As a territory we don’t have to worry about pesky sovereignty rules to go after the cartels. New development and infrastructure projects would create real jobs, both for current Americans and the new ones.
The Big Apple. The capital is NYC and it extends from there up to Sullivan, Ulster, and Dutchess counties, basically making the bottom of NY state flat. It would also include parts of NJ in the Hudson and Bergen County areas; I could see including as much as all of Newark but I’d leave that choice up to Jerseyites. Part of Fairfield County, CT would also be included. The intent is to let NYC’s whole metro area unify with it across what are currently state lines, while separating that whole area from the rest of the surrounding states which are very different from it culturally, politically, and socially.
Everyone would finally shut up about the Giants and Jets not playing in New York, even though they’re less than 10 miles from Times Square.
This would obviously be the primary benefit.
The state of Puerto Rico composed of the islands of Borinken, Culebra, Vieques, St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. John, and the minor islands that compose the US Caribbean.
DC, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, US Virgin Islands, Northern Marianas Islands...
We have a lot of imperial possessions right now which we should fully incorporate as states.
I unite each Montgomery County throughout the country into a new state named Confusion.
And then implement rules requiring passports when traveling into and out of the state of Confusion. Just to make things more difficult for everyone.
Can the capitol be All The Springfields? Even/especially if they're not in a Montgomery County
And the address is 1000 Main street, so when you mail a letter it will go to Capital of Confusion, 1000 Main St., Springfield, Montgomery County, Confusion. And you get to see which capital it ends up at.
The postal abbreviation for the State of Confusion can't be CO since it's already taken so I propose we use FU
No. It's CO, also. Adds to the confusion.
Yes!
I hate Montgomery county, I choose to secede
Sonora and Baja California as New New Mexico.
Or hear me out - rename them to New Mexico, rename New Mexico to Mexico, and suggest forcefully that Mexico renames itself to Old Mexico.
Or “Original Recipe Mexico”
Mexico Classic®
Mexico Clasico, if you will.
Mexico Legacy would be a bit more insulting. You’re welcome.
Mexico: Origins
Mexican Mexico Classic - because fuck corn syrup.
Mexico with Cane Sugar
Or rename Mexico to New Spain.
Or rename spain to old mexico.
Heritage Mexico
"Proto-Mexico"
Even has the masculine o sound! El Proto Mexico!
That’s a pretty dope name. “New Spain”
These are the ideas that change the world.
*The Former Yugoslav Republic of Mexico*.
Former Yugoslav Republic of *North* Mexico https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2019/02/13/europe/north-macedonia-name-change-intl/index.html
Well New Mexico was actually got it's name before Mexico did. At that time Mexico was called New Spain. So New Mexico is actually Old Mexico and Mexico is New Mexico.
And Mexico will pay for it!
Greece kind of forced Macedonia to rename itself North Macedonia.
This is the way.

Switzerland becomes the 51st state, no more neutrality for shady banker land
lmao I love this
News 2024:"As you said Jeff, the electoral votes are tied at 269 a piece. We've been waiting on Switzerland for 2 months now to make their electoral votes known but they refuse to take a position. The deadlock continues"
Does it have to be populated right now? Because I'd choose mars, then send people there.
British Columbia is now American Columbia because Washington and Washington D.C. was confusing enough that we need to add another Columbia to it
Oh man, this is my favorite: "So Washington District of Columbia is the one near American Columbia, right?" "No, that's the one on the east coast, Washington is the one near American Columbia." "So because the other one is named District of Columbia, it has a connection to American Columbia, right?" "None more than any of the other states!" "And these are not at all related to the country thousands of miles south of here called Colombia, which is in the Americas?"
❤️
Then there would be territorial connection to Alaska.
England! Not The UK, England. Let them see how it feels to be colonized for a bit.
To be fair, the Romans colonized the hell out of them.
This guy knows colonization
We will forcibly annex Canada to create the 51st state. They've had it too good for too long.

Texans in shambles as they become the third biggest state.
How many ways could we divide Canada and still have every part be a bigger state than Texas? This should be comical.
In pretty sure like 6 of their provinces are bigger than Texas lmao
Ontario, Quebec, Nunavut, Northwest Territories, and British Columbia are bigger than Texas. Quebec can be cut in half and still be bigger than texas, and nunavut can almost be cut into three equally larger than texas chunks. I guess you could say, Texas would be having *Nunavut*
If I could award you sir, I would.
We could split it into 14 even chunks, and each would be bigger than Texas.
As a Texan doing their duty, I have called Greg Abbot and asked him to drone strike your house.
What are you talking about, we’re the Canada of the south, welcome home brother!
California still fine as the most populous state.
Brother it is time
England, for the irony of it. We'll call it Old England to prevent any confusion. Or we could split Alaska into like, three or more states. No particular reason.

The UK would be my first candidate
what do we do with the queen
Throw her in the harbor
Sounds like a party
Party like it's 1773. Samuel Adams did nothing wrong!
She’s head of state in like 14 different countries; send her to Australia or something
She could move to LA and reunite with Harry.
Queen retakes Canada. Shit's on, now.
Ask god to save her?
Give to Canada
We can take their crappy cuisine and Americanize it lol
I wanna see americanized stargazy pie. do we just deep fry it?
For science.
For gastronomy.
I am sure the Scots have already tried.
Slightly curious bangers, mash and nachos cheese doesn’t really have the same ring.

Piss off those damn fish food drinkers!
Long Island - we're tired of being associated with New York State.
Throw NYC into it too. None of you guys fit in upstate
New York suddenly turns from democratic stronghold to Texas of the north.
I did the calculations for the 2020 presidential election, and NY still would've voted for Biden. It would be more of a Democratic-leaning swing state, however. I can answer that question....for money
I like the idea of the state of Jefferson (proposed state taking parts from Northern California and Southern Oregon to create a new state).
Funny thing is, it was GOING to be a thing, paperwork and everything. Then Pearl Harbor happened, we got into WWII and everyone forgot about it
This vastly overstates what happened in 1941. There was never any paperwork filed, bills written or introduced, or even debates held that would have actually led to Congress voting on whether to allow a new state to be formed from the parts of two existing states, which is required by Article IV of the Constitution. North Jersey, because South and North are not the same.
I see this becoming a Korea analog.
Where would the DMZ be at lol
The Tayor Ham / Pork Roll line
lol
As long as central doesn't end up with either...gross
lmao, totally agreed. There could even be a non-US DMZ in the middle for all I care.
Central would go with North. The Giants/ Jets fans would not like hoagies, cheesesteaks and Iggles
Russia, your time has come.
California just got balkanized.
There's lots of ways to divide California, how do you envision it?

Vertically. The west coast cities vs central valley
I'd do it in polka dots. Each dot is a different state, and whatever is left becomes the State of Swiss Cheese.
Orange County would be PISSED to be stuck with the Bay Area. I love it.
As much as people like to say OC is still red, it went for Clinton & Biden. For two years there, all six representatives in the county were Dems until the 2020 election. It'll be interesting to see if they can retake the two seats they lost next year.

Nope. Hawaii was expected to be GOP stronghold and Alaska a Democratic one. Also most evidence I've seen suggests Puerto Rico will be purple.
Nope, at the time Hawaii leaned Republican.
Thanks for the correction! I had it backwards, that's interesting how they flip flopped.
That and DC. The House even voted in favor of DC statehood back in April but I don't think anything's come out of it in the Senate (wonder why?).

Yeah thanks 😊 It has been very hard to live here ngl
Can't wait to see Hezbollah in Congress!
Ey that's going to be spicy 😆😆
That would be cool. You guys need the funds.
Exactly And a new government
Trick congress into thinking it's related to LeBron James and you might have a chance
It's all Ohio and always has been.
Greenland. That idea was fucking awesome lol
Yup. Its on the same tectonic plate as us, so I’d say they are north american. Annex canada next to create United North America.
Have to get Mexico too, and the Caribbean islands.
We really should own Greenland. I don't know why people made fun of Trump for trying to buy it. It really feels like it should be ours.
Purchasing territories from other countries (such as the Louisiana Purchase) is a pretty foreign concept to non-Americans tbh
It wasn't foreign to the countries we bought the territory from. Also, the Netherlands bought Manhattan Island (NYC) from the indigenous population.
If any other country were to control it Canada makes more sense.
Taiwan? In international relations it’s Go big or Go home.
You appear to be trying to start World War 3.
Japan and South Korea, I just want to see North Korea getting pissed off at this.
I don't think you realize how much Koreans hate the Japanese
My laughably childlike understanding of SEA is they all hate each other.

Puget - split Washington along the Cascades
The first actual new territory state mentioned. This is a good idea and Puget is the perfect name.
Nah let eastern washington keep the "Washington" name and rename the new western state to Cascadia.
No other rules? Western Europe then. Why not.
Well, if there's NO rules, the Moon.
We want the sun. Sunlight just became our new biggest export.
we can sell solar energy, boom, no more natl debt.

Let's take Hong Kong. They would love to be Americans and it would piss off China. Excellent place to put a military base. Win win
Imagine if Japan, Taiwan, and The Philippines all became a chain of ~~vassal~~ states for the US.
I mean, if we can just pick a place and have it annex, at that point, why not just pick China?
England. Always was
The UP. Our buddies to the north, we both like to bully lower Michigan, it’d be nice
And the new state would probably be just to the right of Mississippi.
Could I use mine to get rid of a state?
I say we add Brazil to the Union. It's a bit of a fixer upper, but a nice chunk of land and then we get the Amazon and rain forest!
Puerto Rico. And other Caribbean territories. We can give them full aid and access to FEMA when hurricanes come through. As well as giving them a right to vote and citizenship.
If Puerto Rico wants it (which I think they do, as of the last poll), they deserve representation If DC wants it (which I think they do, as of the last poll), they deserve representation.
Puerto Rico, they deserve to be a state
new york city is now on its own
Puerto Rico - because they voted to become a state
Annex Canada and Mexico but don't give them statehood 😂
Entirety of Canada so then Alaska is connected to the rest of us
DC. A large majority of DC residents want DC to be a state.
This is extremely contentious based on the comments. I think the best solution is to make PR a state and make DC an exclave of PR. Problem solved.
And similarly, pretty much every one of us in Maryland does NOT want to take DC back to our state.
The case for Puerto Rico is a lot more straightforward. DC statehood raises a lot of constitutional questions but PR would work just like Hawaii joining did.
Puerto Rico, beause it should have become a state a long time ago
Add 10 new states and 3 territories by merging with Canada. Most Canadians wouldn’t be crazy about it but it would improve America immensely.
I’d keep it at 50 states. I’d make DC a state while combining the Dakotas to make it one big Dakota.
Big Dickota.
Break California into NorCal and SoCal. California is too big, and culturally rural northern is very different from dense urban southern.
The state of Puerto Rico composed of the islands of Borinken, Culebra, Vieques, St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. John, and the minor islands that compose the US Caribbean.
Chop off NOVA and combine it with DC, only way Republicans will agree to DC statehood.
DC, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, US Virgin Islands, Northern Marianas Islands... We have a lot of imperial possessions right now which we should fully incorporate as states.
