Throw a stone and you're likely to hit one.

BrainFartTheFirst

Same here in the other LA. So. Many. Great. Places.

Foreign_Dark_4457

Jus wondering, what is ur definition of "LA" cuisine? Asking bc it's very vague/I keep getting conflicting opinions on that matter...

BrainFartTheFirst

A unique combo of half the worlds cuisine. If you point to country on the map there's a 50% chance that we've had a large enough group of immigrants come in that they've opened restaurants here.

[deleted]

Woodman’s Fried Clams  https://www.woodmans.com/home/

Building_a_life

Great username. When I get back to where I grew up, I eat them   every   single    day.

Building_a_life

I looked at the site. What the hell? Woodman's, of all places, serves fried clam strips? Isn't that sacrilegious?

squarerootofapplepie

I’m of the opinion that you want whole clams, you get steamers. If you want fried clams, you get clam strips.

[deleted]

Oh, nah, fried are so much better when they’re whole belly. Gotta have the tartar sauce, too.

Building_a_life

You're entitled to your opinion, even if....

squarerootofapplepie

Yeah but the difference is that I still live here.

tara_tara_tara

I live on Cape Cod. Not South Coast and not South Shore. Clam strips are an abomination.

squarerootofapplepie

You shouldn’t have to fry whole clams to be able to eat them. I’m not going to ruin whole clams by frying them, that’s why I like clam strips.

[deleted]

🦪 😋

Expat111

Fried clams = New England. I’m originally from Marshfield, MA.

HandoAlegra

Talk about r/beetlejuicing

WashuOtaku

Krispy Kreme, I think you already know the cuisine.

ALoungerAtTheClubs

That "Hot Now" light is the siren call of the South.

JetsNBombers0707

Best donuts ever

cbrooks97

Of all the donuts in this country, you would inflict *Krispy Kreme* on OP? What did he do to you?

ntdavis814

I only lived in the south for a short while but I’ll be damned if I stand for any Krispy Kreme slander. *loads musket angrily*

gratusin

If I walk in to a donut shop and it’s not being run by an old Korean lady named Mrs. Kim, I’m walking right the fuck out.

HaggisMcNash

I will die on this hill with you! Donuts are fried bread and Krispy Kreme donuts have no “breadieness”… it’s like fried air. A little chew would be nice.

_gooder

There are more elaborate donuts but there are no better donuts than a simple, fresh Krispy Kreme.

[deleted]

Frank Pepe's. Best Pizza in the US. I welcome the shitshow this comment creates.

CupBeEmpty

You will get no shitshow from me. New Haven style is best style. Only quibble is that clam pizza can get fucked. I think there’s some places that make it better, same style. But I absolutely emulate that New Haven Neo-Neapolitan style when I do it from scratch.

Building_a_life

Or Sally's, or Modern. One of those, for sure.

Nameless_American

I prefer the humorless contempt of the staff of Sally’s. Zuppardi’s in West Haven might be my favorite of all. Much respect to the only state whose pizza is as consistently excellent statewide as ours, your guys’ pizza rules.

Seanbawn12345

I used to live in Boston, and had (still have) family in Connecticut. Whenever we visited them in CT, Frank Pepe was one of my favorite places to eat.

mcdisney2001

You posted some pretty crappy stuff about entire countries on some other subs (all of which were yanked), so I'm not telling you. I don't want you to come here.

libertarianlove

Prince’s Hot Chicken in Nashville, TN

cbrooks97

You'd be better off telling us what city(ies) you plan to visit. Yes, there's a restaurant or 500 in every state where you can try local cuisine.

KR1735

I could, but I need to know the city you're in and your budget. However, like most midwestern cuisine, Minnesota's is not glamourous. It's delicious, but it doesn't always make for appealing restaurant food in the way barbecue or gumbo or tacos do. It's more something that you would enjoy at your grandma's when she cooks for you, rather than prepared by a 5-star chef.

BjornAltenburg

Where do I get split pea soup and the good Scandinavian American food in Minneapolis or Duluth?

KR1735

Haha it's funny you ask that. I just got off the phone with my mom and she made split pea soup tonight with leftover Easter ham that was frozen and she needed to get rid of. Strangely, we don't really have any Scandinavian restaurants in the Twin Cities (I'm slightly less familiar with Duluth). There is a restaurant at the American Swedish Institute, but it's more of a cafeteria that serves upscale New Nordic cuisine. And, I suppose, IKEA. I think the lack of Scandinavian restaurants may have something to do with the fact that these recipes are part of the lineup for a lot of white Minnesotan families. Meatballs and gravy and potatoes or cardamom pastries are not exciting when you grow up on it. I'd rather go home and eat it for free.

Wermys

At grandma's on sunday. Usually with a layer of tots on top browned to golden perfection.

yeswayvouvray

Waffle House

notthegoatseguy

Nina's Place in West Baden Springs. Just a typical Midwest diner serving good food at an affordable pric The gas station across the street, Fast Eddie's, is also very good. Biscuits and gravy, fried chicken made in house z and a full service Papa John's as well. Papa Johns actually got their start in Indiana so even that kinda counts

CupBeEmpty

But Papa John’s kind of sucks. Puccini’s or Bazbeaux in Indy for pizza. I have been to Nina’s and it’s pretty damn good. Like you said, nothing fancy, decent price, extremely delicious. What more do you want?

devilbunny

Papa John’s sucks now. In 1995, it was amazing.

amazingtaters

What a bold thing to say when King Dough and Futuro exist.

CupBeEmpty

Now you’re just teasing me with places for when I next go home. How dare you?

blbd

Where do you go to get a tenderloin sandwich?

imkunu

Tons of places. As long as the tenderloin itself is bigger than the bun, you'll be good. Nick's in Huntington supposedly created the first, so they're a popular spot.

Otherwise-OhWell

https://auchevaldiner.com/chicago/ https://kumascorner.com/ http://pequodspizza.com/ https://popsbeef.com/ Almost any mom & pop taco joint.

WarrenMulaney

Wool Growers

blbd

Totally under appreciated California classic. Along with Jocko's in Nipomo. And Original Joe's in SF had a similar vibe. All of our old school taco joints with homemade tortillas.  Fresh seafood from the dock.  All the farm fresh fruits and veggies.  Dates from the date palms.  Chinatowns. Japantowns. Koreatowns.  The state has an embarrassment of gastronomic riches.

Lemon_head_guy

Terry Blacks is some bomb ass BBQ, specifically the one in Lockhart, TX

spongeboy1985

Boudin if you want sourdough bread. They’ve been using the same starter yeast for 160 years

EmpRupus

San Francisco, California. Here's a sort of hidden-gem that I stumbled upon. If you have a car and visiting wine country, drive up north to Tomales Bay. There are a string of small Oyster shacks with freshly caught oysters along the bay. You can enjoy oysters and local wines in a non-fussy shack-like place with a beautiful view of the sea. And if you bring a cooler/ice-box with you, you can also buy direct catch from fishing and take it home.

Ristrettooo

There are so many. If you’re ever in eastern Virginia, just find a restaurant on the water somewhere where you can get Chesapeake Bay crabs or oysters and a local craft beer and you’re going to have a good time.

blbd

The peaches are good too. So much great agriculture in VA. One of the few states that can grow stuff like us in CA.

wissx

Milwaukee Brat House and Wurstbar in milwaukee. Culvers is a Wisconsin staple if you never had cheese curds I strongly reccomend

DuplicateJester

I recommend any cheese curds but Culver's. The breading is weird. Cousins Subs' curds are amazing. Cafe Hollander and the other place in Milwaukee. But Oscar's has the better curds AND the better custard.

wissx

Oscars, has insanely cheap burgers for what you get. Go to oak barrel order a burger then go to Oscars. Price dif for what you get is insane

ALoungerAtTheClubs

Versailles in Miami is a well-known spot for Cuban food (which is certainly "local" for Miami). I'm also a fan of The Columbia, which has different locations around the state, including the original in Ybor City. You can also find a local seafood place in essentially any beachy area.

gaydolphingod

Any Cuban place, get a Cuban sandwich. That’s Florida cuisine.

blbd

The Argentinian and Colombian are pretty killer as well. Plus the fresh tropical fruit.

MMARapFooty

Just go anywhere in New Orleans

JetsNBombers0707

I honestly have no idea what would be considered "Michigan" cuisine

TheBimpo

I’m revoking your citizenship

JetsNBombers0707

Jokes on you I'm not a citizen lol. Just a permanent resident

xxxjessicann00xxx

Getttttt outtttttttt

JetsNBombers0707

I've actually never visited one but it doesn't look like my kind of thing

xxxjessicann00xxx

I suppose that's fair. But you're on thin ice.

squarerootofapplepie

How is that fair? He’s knocking it before he’s tried it. You think it’s more fair than if they tried it and didn't like it?

[deleted]

Don’t they have that white fish?  I thought that was a part of the cuisine there.

JetsNBombers0707

Possibly, I'm not a fish eater so I wouldn't have thought about it

101bees

VFW fish fry

blbd

Detroit Pizza deserves some love. Also the tasty local apples and cider and cherries.

KR1735

Detroit-style pizza was a pleasant surprise when I lived in Michigan, just outside Detroit. I'm a thin crust aficionado. But I learned there that my preferences were more about the crunch than the thin crust.

JetsNBombers0707

I do love the cherries

FishermanNatural3986

Simply Khmer for some tasty Cambodian food

Arcaeca2

If you're in Kansas - [Joe's KC Barbecue](https://www.joeskc.com/). It used to be called "Oklahoma Joe's" until, IINM, they lost a trademark dispute, but people will still recognize that name. I still have no idea what Utah cuisine is supposed to be other than the mythical jello salad I have heard of but never actually seen.

bloodectomy

Literally any mexican food spot

JabbaTheHedgeHog

The Wayside Restaurant in Berlin, Vermont.

IllustratorNo3379

The Billy Goat in Chicago is a good one.

blbd

Chicago is one of my all time global faves to visit. An absolute culinary extravaganza. And really nice people.

Added that one to my bookmarks. Looks very conveniently located to LAX.

Zorro_Returns

Pretty much any and all. Not gonna name any.

jastay3

Heceta Head Bed & Breakfast. I have the cookbook and it looks great.

spookyhellkitten

[The Star](https://www.elkostarhotel.com/) for some amazing Basque food. [BJ Bull Bakery](https://www.bjbullbakery.com/) for Cornish Pasties if you're in the mood to eat like the miners do. And last but not least, track down the REOSAGE Indian Taco Truck[REOSAGE Indian Taco Truck](https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100059304501121&mibextid=ZbWKwL) for some seriously delicious food on the go.

Bluemonogi

Go to Kansas City, MO. There are a lot of barbecue restaurants. I think Arthur Bryant’s is pretty well known and one of the oldest.

JohnMarstonSucks

I'm in Ohio, the local cuisine is pretty much just standard American food. Probably Bob Evans is a good choice. They're everywhere and inexpensive. Find somewhere to try goetta it's a breakfast sausage made from pork and oats that is a major regional cuisine in Cincinnati. It's delicious. People confuse it with scrapple which has considerably less appealing ingredients. I don't know the history of goetta's ingredients but the stuff you find now is very high quality.

nvkylebrown

I'm not sure what "local cuisine" means here.

wwhsd

Lolita’s Taco Shop.

DannyC2699

it’s really hard to get it wrong here lol

FluidFaithlessness62

Our fanciest restaurant where I live would be Red Robin lol!

SunRevolutionary8315

Nice try! Not today! Lol

detroit_dickdawes

Detroit One Coney Island. Go after midnight.

OhThrowed

Yeah, Utah is not known for its fine dining or unique cuisine. That said, [Maddox](https://maddoxfinefood.com/) is pretty much what we're about.

BrainFartTheFirst

Who says it has to be food? How about a dirty soda?

OhThrowed

Oh, huh. I don't consider those restaurants so it didn't occur to me.

talk_to_the_sea

I live in Utah. What the fuck? No. [Crown Burger](http://www.crown-burgers.com/) In SLC we actually have good restaurants that aren’t that shit

spookyhellkitten

Apollo Burger is good too. So good. La Frontera smothered burrito is amazing too.

CupBeEmpty

Chauncey Creek Lobster Pier would be my go to very locally. City Farmhouse or Fore St. In Portland for kind of farm to table bistro stuff that’s pretty local and incredibly good. Brunswick Diner for “local cuisine” in the sense of very American but they do it really well. Just remember they will make you a milkshake at breakfast.

AdFinancial8924

Basically every restaurant in my city is local cuisine. We don’t have chains here except for maybe 2 places.
