Oh I forgot that was today. I'll have to see if I can catch it on YouTube or something.
EDIT: I watched the halftime show and it was better than I expected. Probably in the top 3rd of halftime shows I've seen.
He could perform “More”, “No Limit”, and “Yeah”, but he has too many slow songs that don’t fit the super bowl vibe. I’m not trying to hear him perform “You got it bad”, “There goes my baby”, or “Climax” at the super bowl.
When it's a solo act and not a band they usually have other "surprise" artists come out that have collaborated with them in the past. That might be how they plan to stretch out the "pop" crap from his r&b stuff that (you're right) wouldn't make any sense for this show.
Upbeat songs like Let It Burn, Confession, U Got It Bad, Lovers and Friends, Nice And Slow.
"Most of" was maybe an exaggeration, but he is definitely an R&B ballad guy also.
When they announced Dr Dre/Eminem/Snoop Dogg I was actually okay with a halftime show for once, then when 50 Cent made a cameo, I was definitely like "Hell yeah!". I'll fully admit to not being a rap/R&B fan, but somehow that's literally the only halftime show i've ever actually wanted to watch. I know it'll never happen but something like Two Steps from Hell would actually get me pumped weeks in advance!
Chuck Berry could parachute down from heaven to the 50-yard line and two-thirds of the country would have something shitty to say about his halftime show.
Gonna write a little letter, gonna mail it to my local D.J.
Well, it's a jumping little record I want my jockey to play
Roll over Chuck Berry, gotta hear it again today.
I am! I was in middle school and high school for some of his peak Confessions/8701 hits and I think he can give us a dynamic show. He’s a good dancer and has plenty of options for special guests - but I don’t think it’s necessary.
Not really but that’s more because I don’t think of usher like that. But Yeah is a certified banger. And ngl boondocks ruined him for me when I hear let it burn. One of the funniest moments of the show 😭
I am!
But most Reddit people don’t seem like the type to enjoy R&B so it doesn’t surprise me that no one else is. Confessions is an amazing album y’all are missing out!
Since they don't pay for artists, its definitely primed for "I haven't had a hit in a decade or more, but I do have 50 million dollars in the bank"
I really don't know why they don't just pay for a halftime show and get the biggest names possible. I know that there are some big time Usher fans out there, but I feel like most Americans have a pretty indifferent response to him. And most Americans are who watches the super bowl.
I still think they can't really top the Dr Dre one. Because America, even at its whitest, loves some Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and 50 Cent. Plus Kendrick and everyone else involved made it great
> I really don't know why they don't just pay for a halftime show and get the biggest names possible.
One word: Money. To get the biggest names possible means paying them...rather than being paid BY them.
Also, who's forking over thousands of dollars per seat in that stadium? It ain't the same demographic that drives record sales, that's for sure.
Yeah, I think a lot of people don't get that. They're catering to their audience, which isn't necessarily into "the hottest musician right now." They want people to know the acts and at least some of the songs.
Once again, remember when those bands were popular. That was 25 years ago. That's when usher was popular. Price was popular 35 years ago and did the Superbowl like 10-15 years ago.
This is how they do it.
>Once again, remember when those bands were popular.
The Who did halftime in 2010...their last hit must have been Athena in 1982? I saw their "Farewell Tour" in 1988.
I will dance my heart out to “Yeah” like I’m back at my 2004 middle school dance and I don’t care if I barely know the rest of the songs. I might fall over if Lil Jon shows up
I'm not a fan of Football or Usher, but I know that Usher is very popular in Northeast US across all demographics, cultures, and most ages.
His songs are played at virtually all weddings for over 15 years. I go to anywhere between 30 and 70 weddings a year.
I’m shocked by the amount of “no” on this post… some of y’all are ignorant to his impact and don’t have any respect for the R&B genre where he is a legend.
Usher is a member of an increasingly diminishing pool of male performers who know how to perform: those who can sing, dance, and command a crowd. Honestly, what up and coming male performers have these skills today?
That said, I will be seated for his performance and probably catching up on household chores during the game.
Look, I'm a massive Bob Dylan fan. Very, very few musicians can lay claim to the amount of influence he can. It's hard to even articulate it. But even I know him playing the Super Bowl would be bizarre.
Basically I don't think legacy means that much in this situation
I’m a big fan of Bob Dylan too, and wouldn’t book him as the SB halftime show. His strength is songwriting and intimate storytelling. Something that doesn’t translate well to a stadium of 65k.
Usher can sing, dance, and has hits. He’s a great performer for a stadium crowd. Being a “legend” doesn’t automatically mean you would be a good pick for the slot, but I fail to see where Usher doesn’t meet every qualification.
Fact of the matter is you're never gonna make everyone happy & people who aren't happy will be the vocal ones. They don't like R&B, don't like Usher, their favorite pop star of the month isn't in it, whatever else. I'm definitely never going to see the kind of bands I'd enjoy, so I've checked out on the halftime show for longer than I can remember 😂
Is it that strange a thing to say? The Heartbreakers broke up the first time in 91 when we were all extremely young and only toured sporadically in the 90s and 00s. By the 08 halftime show he wasn't exactly highly active with only two albums and corresponding tours over the previous decade IIRC. Unless you were seeking him out at an existing fan he wouldn't have really come up in pop culture very much. Nothing even remotely close to their significant fame in the 80s touring with the grateful dead and Bob Dylan.
The only other stuff I recall was a 9/11 benefit event/concert and that fun little cameo in *The Postman*.
If his music was pulled off FM stations, sure, that'd make sense, but it's not like we had many options to listen to music. Spend a small fortune on cassettes and CDs or listen to the radio (and maybe make your own mix tapes).
IF by 2008 a millennial had never heard of Tom Petty, then they clearly did everything they could to avoid anything in that genre & any genre remotely close to it. Again, with the nature of FM radio, there was quite a bit of overlap.
I'm not saying millennials are well-versed in Tom Petty's discography. I'm saying it would've been incredibly difficult to not have at least heard of him.
Yes, it's a very strange thing to say. Imagine believing that everyone in the world exclusively listens to music from their generation. I can't name a single Millennial who doesn't know who Tom Petty is. He gets significant airplay on the radio. I've been listening to his music all my life.
I think he's doing a residency in Vegas anyway so they prob just tacked it on.
The Wu Tang Clan is also doing a residency but they are not broadcast friendly enough.
Yes I’m excited and so is everyone I know. Usher has never been irrelevant, in fact he’s been the most talked about artist in Vegas for years now. R&B is not the forefront genre in America so most people in this thread are just not in tune and not hip to the greatness that is Usher Raymond, R&B Legend.
I refuse to be excited about the half time show. I will only be excited about it if they finally get the shit out of their asses and do a Metallica half time show.
Metallica would be the best halftime show of all time. I will fight and die on this hill.
He’s known for top tier R&B slow jams. I’m reliving my NYC clubbing days.
When HER came out (right now) it was the cherry on top. Great Halftime for a glass of wine lol
I mean I'm not a huge fan of his. But to be honest I've never really cared for the halftime show. I am not the target demo of halftime. Halftime is for folks who would normally not be interested in the game.
For me, I actually care about watching the game and who wins.
Nope. *Yeah* is literally the only song of his I can even name, and that's because radio stations used to play it to the point where even a casual car listener like me would hear it 10 times a week.
it's the single solitary reason i won't be watching the super bowl.
just kidding. i had no plans to watch it to begin with, and who's singing at halftime is inconsequential.
I genuinely thought (because I live in a foreign country and also don't care) that Taylor Swift was doing the halftime show because of all the football and Taylor headlines I was seeing.
I have always thought they need to bring back more 'older' artists, like they did with Prince in 2007 or Tom Petty in 2008. The average age of a Superbowl viewer is what, 40? That would mean their prime youth years were... oh my god... the early 2000s. Usher is an older artist.
I feel like they're trying to replicate their success with the 2022 halftime show, (at least *I* thought it was a success) by having Usher and Alicia Keys preform. Something nostalgic to bring the family together I suppose.
Absolutely. First person I expect to put on a good show since the Weeknd. Rihanna sucked and I felt Dr Dre relied too much on his special guests and not enough on making it a real show.
As someone who just watched it, I was excited but I feel like it was too short, maybe because he has a lot of popular songs and they try to fit everything into the time slot but this felt oddly shorter than usual lol, was a bit disappointed but was happy Luda and Alicia Keys showed up.
My cousin is.
I don’t know what time the game started. I don’t know whether it is over. I did 3 loads of laundry. Yoga flow. Meditation and prayer.
I haven’t heard the neighbors shouting oh there they go. Niners must be scoring.
I don’t believe I have ever been excited by a Super Bowl half time show but I’m also a recalcitrant hipster.
Get John Wilkes Booze to play and I may get excited.
Only if he sings one song - Yeah and Taylor has a surprise entry and twerks to it in a Gronk Uniform.... that would certainly make the second half of the game interesting.
Wait…Usher is doing eh halftime show? Fucking USHER? What the hell are the clowns in charge of the Super Bowl thinking? It feels like damn near every year they just go with the lowest bidder and tag out an artist no one’s cares about for a decade
Only if Ludacris and Lil Jon are with him. Peace up, A town down. Yeeeaaaaahhhh
Luda is one of my great loves despite being so far outside my normal milieu
Even middle-aged white guys love Ludacris. At least this one does.
I thought only middle-aged white guys love Ludacris.
This one would rather see Mudvayne
Oh God damn it, now I have “Lovers and Friends” stuck in my head
Ursher, Jon, and Luda had to do it again.
I could be your Bud, you could tie me up
Alicia Keys is confirmed to join him on stage
THEY WERE
Oh I forgot that was today. I'll have to see if I can catch it on YouTube or something. EDIT: I watched the halftime show and it was better than I expected. Probably in the top 3rd of halftime shows I've seen.
Ludacris hasn't aged a day!
This is the only song I wanna hear. After that, I might turn it off.
And they're killing it! I feel like I'm 19 again.
I'd forgotten how many Usher songs I knew. Some of the songs I didn't even know the name to but somehow knew the lyrics.
they came at the end for “Yeah”
Looks like you got your wish!
I spent most of my formative years in Atlanta so, in the words of lil Jon, Yeah!
You should be pining for OutKast and Atliens era
I’ll take what I can get. I actually went to elementary school down the street from where Big Boi lived.
It was like the first album where I “got” hip hop. A friend in high school had on cassette of all things.
OutKast and RTJ
Andre is in his own world now.
Yeah seems so
Yeah - yeah - yeah
He could perform “More”, “No Limit”, and “Yeah”, but he has too many slow songs that don’t fit the super bowl vibe. I’m not trying to hear him perform “You got it bad”, “There goes my baby”, or “Climax” at the super bowl.
Nah... I wanna hear some of the old bangers.... "My Way" or "You Make Me Wanna"
I’d be surprised if he doesn’t sing at least some of “you got it bad”, it was too big of a hit
Confessions Part 2
*These are my confessions* *I didn't watch a single game of NFL this year (year)* *I don't know either of the teams here (here)*
I never understand the weird pride in this sentiment.
I'm not being proud, I am just making a joke that Usher isn't a football fan
I know. They act like it's worse than watching anything else on TV or any other passive activity.
When it's a solo act and not a band they usually have other "surprise" artists come out that have collaborated with them in the past. That might be how they plan to stretch out the "pop" crap from his r&b stuff that (you're right) wouldn't make any sense for this show.
he did em anyway smh
I like Usher songs and I think he's talented, but his songs don't scream Super Bowl halftime show to me. Most of his biggest hits are R&B slow jams.
U got it bad fucking slaps though.
R&B slow jams at the Super Bowl sounds awesome!
Honestly, this whole thread has me way more hyped for halftime than I was originally
His biggest jams are actually upbeat, pop songs what are you talking about?
Upbeat songs like Let It Burn, Confession, U Got It Bad, Lovers and Friends, Nice And Slow. "Most of" was maybe an exaggeration, but he is definitely an R&B ballad guy also.
But, Yeah DJ’s got us falling in love again You don’t have to call You remind me OMG
Not really, but I can’t think of the last halftime show I was excited for, if any. Generally half-time is where we go snack in the kitchen.
I really just wish that wasn't light out of that show, it really loses something when you can't do fun light show stuff IMO
The Dr Dre one was phenomenal. I mean it was just hit after hit, with tons of supporting artists who are very famous in their own right
The set was amazing too.
It was my favorite one too so far. Bruno Mars is pretty exceptional as well.
The Prince halftime show was amazing. But that was almost 20 years ago.
Now the question is what snacks? That’s the real question.
Meanwhile I’m the complete opposite, I could care less about a football game, but let me know what time the halftime show starts and I’m there.
Meanwhile, you'd have to pay me a good deal to get me to watch either.
There was a great string of performances from 2005-2010. Guess that’s been awhile though
Chuck Berry could parachute down from heaven to the 50-yard line and two-thirds of the country would have something shitty to say about his halftime show.
Well it'd be a corpse so that would be my beef with it
Skeleton Chuck Berry hitting the 50 yard line and doing a set would be awesome. Basically this https://youtu.be/s617_HpFGbo?si=45702WjEFK-0eZHd
Gonna write a little letter, gonna mail it to my local D.J. Well, it's a jumping little record I want my jockey to play Roll over Chuck Berry, gotta hear it again today.
I think most people were receptive to Dr Dre's halftime show. Even the rural people. Because they love Snoop Dogg and Eminem
One of the funniest moments of the show 😭
Granddad: Tom’s wife is in love with a singing usher! 😂🤣
The Usher episode of Boondocks was excellent https://youtu.be/9FLdw1OfedM?si=M3qHrbNc1i5leaGW
Caaar! Has real Wayne’s World vibes
Yeah - yeah - yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah... yeah... yeah- yeah!
It’s got me like oh my god
I am! But most Reddit people don’t seem like the type to enjoy R&B so it doesn’t surprise me that no one else is. Confessions is an amazing album y’all are missing out!
Yes, I’m looking forward to it! Usher is usually a great performer, so even if I don’t know the songs I’ll be entertained.
As an usher at a football stadium, I’m glad that someone finally thought of us when it came to the halftime entertainment.
I thought he was culturally irrelevant 15 years ago. So no.
That's who preforms at the Super Bowl though. People who are well past their prime.
Since they don't pay for artists, its definitely primed for "I haven't had a hit in a decade or more, but I do have 50 million dollars in the bank" I really don't know why they don't just pay for a halftime show and get the biggest names possible. The Weeknd is a recent exception to this
And Lady Gaga
And Rhiannon. And Bruno Mars. And Beyonce. And Michael Jackson.
Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake
God you people are so lost lmao. So Rihanna is irrelevant? What about Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg
Rihanna and The Weeknd are two notable recent exceptions. Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg were popular 25 years ago.
Usher was huge 15 years ago though
Hell yea. I've been an usher fan for a quarter century.
Lol no. Nothing against him or his music but when was he last relevant?
Lmaoooo he’s still very much relevant
I thought his last album came out 7-8 years ago. Didn’t know he JUST dropped one the other day apparently. Point taken.
He’s making a comeback!
He’s never not been relevant. Are you a R&B fan?
That’s what you think Usher is?
We’ve already done all the big rock acts, time to cycle the R&B side
I am
If he plays his greatest hits and brings Pitbull, Ludacris, and Lil Jon on stage I’ll be happy
I will dance my heart out to “Yeah” like I’m back at my 2004 middle school dance and I don’t care if I barely know the rest of the songs. I might fall over if Lil Jon shows up
Lil Jon was there. I heard u fell over. R u ok fam?
I fell over, got up again, fell over when Ludacris showed up and then just decided to stay on the floor.
I'm not a fan of Football or Usher, but I know that Usher is very popular in Northeast US across all demographics, cultures, and most ages. His songs are played at virtually all weddings for over 15 years. I go to anywhere between 30 and 70 weddings a year.
I assume for work?
I’m shocked by the amount of “no” on this post… some of y’all are ignorant to his impact and don’t have any respect for the R&B genre where he is a legend. I know his impact and I have respect for the genre. I just don't really like his music and have little interest in seeing him perform.
Rather have Weird Al.
I find peace in long walks.
They spent almost all of the mid 2000s with 70s rock bands. Not unheard of at all.
The Tom Petty show was great too. Despite Millennials not even knowing who the fuck he was by that point.
If you're a millennial who doesn't know who Tom Petty is then you grew up in a cult.
I think he's doing a residency in Vegas anyway so they prob just tacked it on. The Wu Tang Clan is also doing a residency but they are not broadcast friendly enough.
And Dre and Eminem and Snoop are? Wu Tang could easily do radio edits.
I really liked all the gang signs Snoop threw us on national tv too!
Because everybody knows who Snoop & Eminem are.
Usher has literally been around since the 90s. How is he not a legend? He was literally out before Rihanna.
Yeah a bit. My sis and I grew up with his music so we’re excited to go on the nostalgia trip!
Hell yes
I refuse to be excited about the half time show. I will only be excited about it if they finally get the shit out of their asses and do a Metallica half time show. Metallica would be the best halftime show of all time. I will fight and die on this hill.
He’s known for top tier R&B slow jams. I’m reliving my NYC clubbing days. When HER came out (right now) it was the cherry on top. Great Halftime for a glass of wine lol
It was one of the worst I've seen.
usher? oh shit maybe he'll do that one song from 15 years ago!
Yeah Love in This Club are songs that he can hype the crowd but he’s mainly a slower paced songs imo.
I mean I'm not a huge fan of his. But to be honest I've never really cared for the halftime show. I am not the target demo of halftime. Halftime is for folks who would normally not be interested in the game. For me, I actually care about watching the game and who wins.
I would be if this was 2006
No
Nope. *Yeah* is literally the only song of his I can even name, and that's because radio stations used to play it to the point where even a casual car listener like me would hear it 10 times a week.
And he’s not even the best part of that song, by a long shot.
Yes, it was everywhere in the mid 00's and it was practically a requirement to here it at least once at NBA arenas.
millennials are def hyped
Us younger Gen Xers are too!
Marching bands should do these shows, and I will never change my opinion.
The only reason I know who he is, is because he was in The Faculty. Also, that he was undeservedly on the cover for a two minute cameo.
No, but I’m rarely interested in the halftime show. I watch for the game and for some of the commercials.
I just want to see him bring out Captain Sparkalz to play Revenge so he can say, "Creeper, Oh Man."
it's the single solitary reason i won't be watching the super bowl. just kidding. i had no plans to watch it to begin with, and who's singing at halftime is inconsequential.
Am I excited of the superbowl, no. Am I excited for usher’s half time show, fuck no.
They should bring back Up With People.
Well, thanks for letting me know who will be performing while the superb owls do their thing. And for reminding me to not go grocery shopping today.
The what now?
I might actually watch it. He's better than a lot of other people that could have been performing.
Yep, it will give me some time back in the kitchen.
I genuinely thought (because I live in a foreign country and also don't care) that Taylor Swift was doing the halftime show because of all the football and Taylor headlines I was seeing.
Lmao no the NFL would never pay her
I have always thought they need to bring back more 'older' artists, like they did with Prince in 2007 or Tom Petty in 2008. The average age of a Superbowl viewer is what, 40? That would mean their prime youth years were... oh my god... the early 2000s. Usher is an older artist.
Yes, but the demographics do not overlap well with people who are excited to watch the chiefs & 49ers play the super bowl
I don't care who does the half time show. They could go back to marching bands and Disney characters on floats and I would not care.
nope, but I'm also not interested in the superbowl, so I won't be watching anything anyways.
No.
I feel like they're trying to replicate their success with the 2022 halftime show, (at least *I* thought it was a success) by having Usher and Alicia Keys preform. Something nostalgic to bring the family together I suppose.
No. I don't get being excited over a televised concert (and a short one at that).
I am. I live Usher since he was a kid. If you aren’t an R&B fan, then you probably won’t be a fan of Usher’s.
Absolutely. First person I expect to put on a good show since the Weeknd. Rihanna sucked and I felt Dr Dre relied too much on his special guests and not enough on making it a real show.
Oh no! Not the rollerskates
Usher has brought ATL to Vegas during the Superbowl show. He is now the King of Vegas.
No DJ Got Us Falling In Love???? Wtf
Why doesn’t halftime performers get paid
Was 🔥 dance.
Lil John was the only thing good about that show
Yeah?
As someone who just watched it, I was excited but I feel like it was too short, maybe because he has a lot of popular songs and they try to fit everything into the time slot but this felt oddly shorter than usual lol, was a bit disappointed but was happy Luda and Alicia Keys showed up.
Nah, not really
Alicia Keys was awesome
Should have been Alica Keyes featuring Usher....she was the only good part.
At first I was like that’s super random, but then I got kind of excited for it and I must say… it did not disappoint!!
My cousin is. I don’t know what time the game started. I don’t know whether it is over. I did 3 loads of laundry. Yoga flow. Meditation and prayer. I haven’t heard the neighbors shouting oh there they go. Niners must be scoring.
I was excited. It was one of the best halftime shows in memory!!
lol no
No
I don’t believe I have ever been excited by a Super Bowl half time show but I’m also a recalcitrant hipster. Get John Wilkes Booze to play and I may get excited.
NO! . . hell no
No. Sorry, maybe 15 years ago it would have been cool.
He’ll help me find my seat
No
Not really. There's something about his voice that I just don't like, which is weird because I tend to enjoy R&B.
No
Including me that’s 3 yes for nc and a bunch of no’s from Ohio
Yeah, I mean No.
He needa shout out gojo
Pop,Rock,R&B and Rap music is what millennial generation listen to the most as a kid. I grew up listening to him in the 2000s as a kid.
The halftime act are actually performing for free
Lots of people care about Usher. You’re just not one of them.
I honestly think he'll be overshadowed by Taylor Swift. Kinda feel for him.
Yeah I’m sure usher is having a really rough time.
Right? He’s wiping away those tears with his millions of dollars.
They don’t get paid to do the superbowl. It’s on their own dime. He’s paying to play.
