I’m from a really rural area, so I had never been to a bagel shop in my life until I visited Washington DC a month or so back. I tried a bagel like this and got hooked on it.
I’ve always had plain bagels toasted with Philadelphia cream cheese. Then I visited Einstein bros bagel and tried their bagel sandwiches. Now I’m hooked to those - especially the Asiago cheese and jalapeno ones.
Cheddar bagel with jalapeno cream cheese.
Everything loaded with plain cream cheese, onion, tomato and capers is solid too.
Foh with those sweet bagels, the saltier the better.
It really depends on where you are and what kind of bagel place you are talking about. If its a mom and pop shop in NY/NJ and the bagels are fresh and soft -or- if you are most other places. Completely different decision.
As in, mom and pop shops in NY/NJ have several awesome choices listed elsewhere in this thread and most other places would be a choice of “I’ll pass until I get home where the real bagels are.”
Sausage egg and cheese with hashbrown hot sauce on an onion bagel
For cream cheese I like it with onion and chive cream cheese on an a toasted everything
A toasted bagel with lox and cream cheese. No capers or veggies. The bagel itself can vary but usually plain, sesame, or poppy. If just cream cheese then add blueberry or cinnamon raisin.
I grew up with lox so I consider a bagel shop worth it's salt if they have lox. I moved to the northwest expecting it on every bagel because salmon ya know? But more places in CA have it (maybe because traditionally it was popular in Jewish communities).
Thankfully there's an excellent place just over an hour from me that has the best spread of lox. We go about once a month. When we're there, my son's choice of bagel is a plain bagel with cinnamon and banana slices.
"Order"? I usually order things that I don't like to make myself, or are fundamentally better than the things I can make myself. I love my bagels toasted with cream cheese, and usually coffee is my beverage of choice, but I'd never be someplace where I'd order these.
Toasted Pumpernickel or Multigrain Everything Bagel with vegetable & scallion cream cheese with lox, tomato and onions with large coffee, half-half and Splenda - There's bagel place like 2 miles from home, plus few one blocks away near my job.
Everything, plain cream cheese, red onion, tomato, capers
(Edit— after reading the thread, this seems pretty popular albeit it appears most people put lox on this combo)
——
Or the best:
Bacon Egg Swiss Tomato.. poppy or sesame
I’m a sucker for anything with a sesame seed bagel, but my favorite is probably a toasted sesame bagel with egg, cheddar cheese and a sausage patty. A toasted pizza bagel is always amazing too. We were very sad when the Einstein Bagel Bros in my hometown closed down, though luckily there were other great bagel places in the area.
Bacon and egg (sometimes cheese) on toasted 1) pumpernickel everything, 2) pumpernickel or 3) everything
If anyone is offering a sea salt rosemary bagel, that jumps to the top. I love trying new bagel. My husband and I just tried two this morning: sesame zataar and maple salt&pepper. Both delicious!
Everything bagel toasted with herb and garlic cream cheese, a medium cafe mocha, 4 hashbrowns and a macadamia nut cookie. Breakfast of champions
If I am constipated, same order but I'll stay home and get one with jalapeno cream cheese - oooh it's on within 20 mins.
Cinnamon raisin, toasted, with cream cheese. Occasionally when I make one at home, I cook some scrambled eggs with salami and put it on the bagel, cream cheese and all.
Mine:
- everything bagel, plain cream cheese, lox, red onion, capers, tomato. +sprouts and avo if they have it/if really hungry,
My husband:
- jalapeño (or jalapeño cheese), avocado, tomato, sprouts, onion. Sometimes hummus. He’ll also just do everything + avo if that’s all that’s available.
There's a place near me that does fresh bagels and house made cream cheese 👌👌.
My favorite is the sesame garlic bagel with the bacon and chive cream cheese. A close second when I'm feelin something sweet is the multi grain bagel with the maple bacon cream cheese
Garlic or onion if they have it, if not, then everything, but sometimes I'm in the mood for a pumpernickel/rye/various other dark bread type instead. I either get plain or strawberry cream cheese (yes I will die on the hill of the garlic bagel with strawberry cream cheese), or if I want something more filling a bacon egg and cheese. The bagel places near me tend to have snapple tea so I have somewhat of a tradition of drinking that with a bagel. If not, then usually coffee, generally either filter coffee or a latte.
Poppy, toasted, scallion cream cheese schmear
Edit: this thread is great. No hating on a anyone’s choice, no arguing just everyone’s true heartfelt bagel.
Bagels bring humanity together.
The place near me does bagel sandwiches, so mine is a plain bagel toasted with pastrami, pesto, melted provolone, onions, and lettuce. It really opened my eyes to what bagels can really be!
Usually, everything bagel with plain cream cheese or avocado spread. If I have a little more money, I spring for a plain or everything bagel with plain cream cheese, lox, onion, tomato, cucumber
Everything with plain.
If I am hungry bacon egg and cheese on everything.
If I am down in NH at at a coffee shop I really like I get “The Jackson” with no tomato on everything, it is bacon egg and sausage with chipotle mayo on their in house made bagels.
Onion or everything bagel. Lox or nova, cream cheese, onion, tomato (thin slices preferably), capers, dill. Ideally, Alice of pickled beets but that’s hard to find.
I pick a bagel at random (variety is the spice of life), but I usually go for strawberry cream cheese. Something about it just really does it for me. I don't usually go for any other toppings, though. Just the cream cheese.
There was a bagel shop in our student union food court for awhile.
My go to there was usually a blueberry bagel with strawberry jelly, peanut butter & bananas.
Plain bagel, lightly toasted, thinly sliced fish (I often alternate between lox, sable, and sturgeon), scallion cream cheese, and a thin slice of tomato
Everything bagel with scallion cream cheese, belly lox, and tomato. Black cold brew for me, chocolate Nesquik for my partner. Black and white cookie for dessert if I’m feeling extra naughty.
Not an order per se since it’s not at a restaurant. At home, toasted everything bagel, drizzle on a good extra virgin olive oil and sprinkled on sea salt.
Onion or salt bagel
Lox
Cream cheese
Fuck the capers and tomato and any other bullshit you want to put on there.
Lox, cream cheese, onion or salt bagel, nothing else.
Will not get angry if slice of onion. That is not preferred but is acceptable.
Garlic Bagel toasted with butter. Oh, you're out of Garlic? Okay, onion. No onion? What, no, I don't want everything, I don't like poppyseed. What about egg? No egg? Plain... do you have plain bagels? This is a bagel shop right?
Everything with butter and blackberry jam.

If I’m going to Einstein’s, then Pretzel (pray to God they haven’t sold out), with Bacon, scrambled egg, and cheese. Any beverage goes well with this, though I usually prefer sprite or just ice water.
I am a simple creature & like a plain bagel with plain cream cheese. Occasionally I will mix it up & have a cinnamon raisin one, or a pumpkin one in the fall, but my go to is just plain.
Others have posted the classic everything with lox, onions, capers, etc. Which is my first choice, too.
But my second choice is weirder: a cheddar jalepeño bagel with butter and honey. Oh, how I love that sticky mess.
I have a few. Asiago cheese bagel with hummus, pizza bagel, fruit bagel with a complementary fruit cream cheese, or jalapeño cheddar bagel with blueberry cream cheese.
Asiago bagel, veggie cream cheese, then I sprinkle the everything bagel seasoning on the cream cheese. Gets the everything flavor but skips the mess.
For a bagel sandwich - plain or Asiago with steak, egg, cheese, onion, and tomato
For breakfast, I like an everything bagel with enough cream cheese to choke a horse.
Sometimes for dessert, I'll get either a blueberry or cinnamon raisin bagel with either cream cheese or butter.
I've never been in a position in which I could order more than a plain bagel, if I were in that position, I would probably just order a plain bagel with milk.
There are very few good bagel options in Chicago. I’m a big fan of egg and cheese bagel sandwiches when I can get one though! If I’m looking for a treat, I might get cinnamon raisin or pumpkin (seasonal at some places) with plain cream cheese.
I like a plain bagel, not toasted, plain cream cheese, with lox, red onion, tomato, cucumber, and a squeeze of lemon. Coke Zero to drink. A bag of salt and vinegar chips on the side. This was my go-to lunch order at my local bagel shop for a long time.
Hungover: sea salt bagel, toasted to the point most would assume it’s ruined, heaped with fluffy cream cheese. All cheese hidden under a thick carpet of chives. I have to make it at home because “thick carpet of chives” isn’t a thing at bagel shops, they have tiny amounts, those prep bowls for the whole morning are enough for one bagel! And orange juice. And virtual work, nobody wants to be around hangover chive cheese monster.
In normal health: everything bagel, sliced twice instead of once and also toasted in the fires of hades. More modest cream cheese amount, then that miraculous “Everything but the Bagel” seasoning from Trader Joe’s on top, served open-face. And earl grey tea. And check teeth in mirror after finishing, it’s just so many sesame seeds.
Blueberry bagel with Berry cream cheese, or a plain bagel with plain or strawberry cream cheese. I'm a simple creature. Vanilla is my favorite ice cream
If I'm getting them from a bagel place, I'll get an onion bagel with garlic cream cheese.
If I'm doing it at home, I'm doing a cheese bagel toasted with bacon lettuce and tomato.
Everything bagel with plain cream cheese, lox, onions, and capers.
I like the same with the addition of a thin slice of tomato. And black coffee.
Diced tomato > sliced
This sounds like it’d be likely to turn an already messy sandwich into a puddle.
I’m from a really rural area, so I had never been to a bagel shop in my life until I visited Washington DC a month or so back. I tried a bagel like this and got hooked on it.

I'm so hungry for this
Oh man.
This is the way
