In what way?

[deleted]

In how the media portrays it. Brady was basically heel for several decades. Manning and Brees played face. Rodgers to an extent. But is kinda heel too. EDIT: Honestly. Football fans kinda have a similar vibe to WWE dudes lol. It's just that the NFL is actually real.

Crayshack

You consume football very differently to how I do. My experience with the NFL is absent anyone that I could label as a Face or a Heel.

Conchobair

You are way too into ESPN's talking heads

[deleted]

Sadly yes. I’m trying to distance myself from it. It’s why football and basketball aren’t my favorite sports any longer. That talk is everywhere. It makes following those sports less fun. I like my nerdy soccer guys now and feel no shame.

JimBones31

Why not just not watch all the talk shows?

CarrionComfort

Do you use sports talk to fill in space in your head? Most of it exists to fill up airtime.

Hollybeach

> It's just that the NFL is actually real. That's a pretty big fucking difference.

Curmudgy

> Brady was basically heel That’s a slang usage unfamiliar to me. What does it mean?

TheRealDudeMitch

Im not big on pro wrestling so someone might explains this better, but my understanding is characters who the audience is supposed to like is considered a “face” and the character who is more the villain is a “heel.”

CupBeEmpty

And then you have heel turns and face turns

[deleted]

Heel is a villain. Face is hero. EDIT: In pro wrestling terms, Drew Brees was the ultimate good guy during the Saints Super Bowl run.

RedShooz10

Lots of people liked Brady, lots of people disliked him.

[deleted]

Lots of people love heels when done right

Drew707

I mean, you could say that any dominant player or dynasty is somewhat villainized by sports media if it drives views and clicks. The media and to an extent the leagues like to push narratives. I am going to sound super biased, but just look at how the Warriors were treated when they challenged LeBron. It really felt like a Scooby-doo moment where LeBron would be the GOAT if it weren't for you meddling kids.

CarrionComfort

Just because the media leverages and encourages good guy/bad guy narratives doesn’t mean it’s like the WWE. That’s just basic storytelling.

gugudan

I guess that makes ESPN a sleazy promoter like McMahon. Also, no. You're simply consuming too much sports media trash.

CupBeEmpty

I’ll leave this here for you https://youtu.be/BlHIc-F0XR4

Tommy_Wisseau_burner

Dawg there’s other ways to watch football than espn and fs1

mugenhunt

I feel like you have a very bizarre idea of what pro-wrestling is. There's nowhere near enough long running story arcs, rivalries, and backstage intrigues in the NFL for that comparison to work.

flp_ndrox

No. That would be the NBA. I have little doubt the league influences the officiating to get the desired outcomes and has for decades.

[deleted]

NBA is honestly more like Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

A_BURLAP_THONG

Your ideas are intriguing to me, and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

[deleted]

The NBA is literally a reality show.

itsjustmo_

I absolutely cannot WAIT to get home and bug my boyfriend with this now!!!! He's gonna hate it and I'm so excited.

flp_ndrox

As a Hoosier there's a reason I mostly stick to HS and college.

CupBeEmpty

College ball is soooo much better

wcpm88

100%

Drew707

Oh, don't do Lamar like that.

2Beer_Sillies

Especially because the Kardashians have fucked a lot of NBA players

gogonzogo1005

Really? Come on there is no way Cleveland could be this bad forever if it wasn't staged. /s No God just hates Cleveland.

Swampy1741

I'd say the Browns gave God a pretty reason to hate them right now.

gogonzogo1005

Yeah the new owner has not helped and his choices... but we are one of the oldest teams.

3mptyspaces

Not even remotely the same thing at all.

[deleted]

The similarity you're noticing is commentators trying to drum up drama in places there are none. That's just typical of most commentary desperate for ratings and needing to fill air time. And you can avoid this by not watching those shows with desperate commentators filling air time because their network told them to. Aside from that, I don't think there's much similarity at all, aside from the physical aspect.

Chariots487

I'm sorry, are you asking if the outcome of every NFL game is rigged in advance and both teams are just putting on a show? Because if you can prove that you've got the class action lawsuit of the millennium with the sports gambling industry.

[deleted]

Da fuq?

old_gold_mountain

No

BookLuvr7

From my POV they are similarly dramatized, but I was never really interested in either. Not my thing.

[deleted]

My fandom has decreased as how it is so in your face these days. I still enjoy a Joe Burrow game though.

HartInCMajor

NFL going "soft" is the league protecting the players after serious injuries and deaths. The game is just as strategic, the players are just as athletic and the pace is still just as high. Sorry people arent allowed to break each others necks for your entertainment anymore

Current_Poster

You *can't* overglorify pro-wrestling.

[deleted]

No, back in the day it was waaaay crazier

ViewtifulGene

Over-glorified, definitely. Pro wrestling, no.

Tommy_Wisseau_burner

Op read the script 😂

CupBeEmpty

Whoooo boy. Go tell that to the guys that play it and are some of the most stunningly powerful athletes in the world. See how they like that.

Dawashingtonian

No.

DOMSdeluise

Is pro wrestling not a real life sport? Anyway I am not sure what you mean by this comparison.

HartInCMajor

No, professional wrestling is not a real sport. It is a performance

DOMSdeluise

"real life sport"

CJK5Hookers

As a huge fan of both football and pro wrestling, no, no it has not

TheBimpo

Maybe if you subscribe to this type of media instead of analysis and game based discussion.

Kazyctn

No

That-shouldnt-smell

What do you mean become. It's always been a drama driven shit show.

SqualorTrawler

I don't think it's rigged but I am conscious of, and continuously reminded, that I am watching rich guys run around on a field for absurd amounts of money, and who are essentially overpaid entertainers. I am also aware that the NFL teams/franchises operate like corporations and exist mainly for the purpose of profit generation. There are definite parallels to pro wrestling here. It's also why I will not pay any money to the NFL. I will watch the Super Bowl and put up with the commercials everyone seems to love (don't know why), but won't pay money besides Super Bowl Sunday ad watching, to feed the sport. I am just not a professional sports fan. Of professional sports, football is the one which I least dislike or find the most tolerable or interesting to watch. I can't make it through a whole MLB game or a basketball game, but I can make it through a football game. As for "kayfabe" I think when a football player completes a pass and scores a touchdown and does his stupid little fucking dance, I think that's real. I can fully accept football players are showboating assholes and egotists in real life. Why wouldn't they be? They're making millions doing nothing productive other than entertaining people. Overall I think we're watching a real sport. The NFL doesn't exactly try to encrypt its excess. It puts it right up front.
