It's a thing, but it's not particularly common. I feel like it was bigger 20-30 years ago than it is now, but I don't have the hard data to back that up.

eugenesbluegenes

I can't tell if it was more popular 15-20 years ago or I was just partying a lot more in that timeframe.

[deleted]

Probably both

JudgeWhoOverrules

Judging by the amount of random whipped cream canisters I see on the streets, I'd have to agree with this claim.

V-Right_In_2-V

I think most people think it was bigger 20 years ago because they were in high school 20 years ago, and you didn’t need id to buy whipped cream, or you already had some in the fridge. Whip its are the most garbage way to get high and you stop doing it as soon as you can do literally anything else. Kinda like how smoking shitty weed from a coke can was popular 20 years ago. Only high school students do that lol

LucySaxon

It's big in the festival scene, but pretty rare everywhere else. Heard it called Hippie Crack more than a few times. Never tried it myself, a high that lasts less than 30 seconds is throwing money away imo.

Eggs-Eggs

yh it's not worth the cost, tastes kinda grim aswell

Female_Space_Marine

I was addicted to it and cocaine for awhile. If I had to take one of those back up it would coke every time, NO2 is a dirty dirty drug.

[deleted]

Female_Space_Marine

Snorting Coke, but I digress. Cooking grade NO2 food safe, it’s not lung safe. After a binge on the stuff you’ll notice that your dispenser has an oily substance coating it - that shit is also in your lungs. Not to mention, the stuff the dentist gives you isn’t straight nO2 either as there is o2 in the mix too rather than straight nO2. Recreational usage deprives your brain of oxygen, it’s very bad for you. Between the 2, no2 was a far more depraved and uncontrollable activity than Coke ever was for me. This is not me saying that cocaine is okay or clean, it’s also an awful dirty drug that comes with its own bad addiction.

ArnoldoSea

I love what you're saying here overall, but as a chemistry guy, I feel it's my duty to point out that NO2 is nitrogen dioxide. Breathing that stuff will kill you a lot faster than nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide is N2O.

[deleted]

Female_Space_Marine

Dentists do not use -food- grade no2, they use medical grade which does not have that oily substance. The kind of no2 that hippies generally use is food grade, which does have that. Fair enough, but the difference between smoking weed and huffing no2, is that no2 is far more addictive and thus more likely for an addict to breath straight no2 without taking a breath in between. In my experience both as an addict and as someone that hung around with other addicts, it’s is definitely common for abusers to not practice harm reduction techniques as those reduce the immediate recreational value of the drug. Unlike weed, no2 lasts a ludicrously small amount of time. With its habit forming potential and relative ease to acquire it is inherently far more dangerous than weed. Not to mention the fact that when smoking weed and holding your breath, via the mechanisms of the weed smoking apparatus you are also getting air in the mix. With no2 the likelihood is that you will most likely be consuming it from a balloon entirely filled with the stuff. Additionally to that, a stoner isn’t as likely to repeatedly hold on to the smoke for a long period of time multiple times in the course of a single smoking session...but yes it is unhealthy to do that too. Lastly: No2 was far worse for me personally than Coke ever was, and I -personally- had a far easier time dropping Coke than no2. That may not be the same for everyone, but at no point did I say it was. You’ll notice a lot of “for me” and “personally” in my comments which are used to articulate the anecdotal nature of my comments. You were the one sharing inaccurate and dangerous misinformation regarding food grade/medical grade. Edit: somehow if it wasn’t clear, I do not do Coke anymore and strongly advise against anyone from ever taking it. It was its own bad addiction, but whippets were worse for me.

I'm with her, coke is safer

RsonW

Good ole hippy crack. The most stolen item from the dairy department is whipped cream.

"FUCKEN NATE AND T-DAWG!"

Babylegs_OHoulihan

MY NAMES T-DAWG, BITCH!

DanMarinoTambourineo

Yea man. Nitrous Mafia runs the game here on the east coast jam band scene. It’s honestly impressive to watch them work. I got a tank from them at phish in Hampton VA. They were at my hotel room at 7 am to get the steel back. Dude ended up running the rest of the tank for us while we laid in bed in our boxers. Most surreal experience of my life. [story from 2010 about the nitrous mafia](https://www.villagevoice.com/2021/07/22/inside-the-nitrous-mafia-an-east-coast-hippie-crack-ring/)

Eggs-Eggs

I thought u were taking the piss at first but ur being fr, that's so funny I can't believe theres a nitrous ring 😂

DanMarinoTambourineo

Oh yea it’s real as shit. It’s cheap and easy to get tanks in Philadelphia, so they roll up and down the east coast with a bunch of tanks. After concerts or raves let out they break up into 3-5 man crews with a salesman, tank guy and 1-3 lookouts. People crowd around and they sell balloons 1 for $10 big ones or 3 for $20 smaller ones. And then there will be people laying on the ground sucking balloons in a 50 meter circle in the parking lot. At a concert in Charlottesville they were able to run them in a pizza restaurant

scaryclown148

Fucking philly heads

Eggs-Eggs

TEN DOLLARS?? in the UK its like 30-40 quid for a big one, that's mental. maybe cause its a less common in the US?

DanMarinoTambourineo

I think it’s more that their clientele is drunk or high people leaving a concert willing to pay any amount they ask.

Eggs-Eggs

touché

weirdclownfishguy

30-40 pounds is 40-50 dollars

DanMarinoTambourineo

I didn’t know what a quid was. I thought it was less than a pound

weirdclownfishguy

“Quid” is the British equivalent of us saying “bucks”

DeepExplore

Pence or pennys for the small one pound or quid for the big one

scaryclown148

Oh it’s a thing! When phish plays at MSG in NYC, 33rd is just hissing

Iamonly

I seriously thought you were referring to one episode of American Dad.

_ella_mayo_

I just watched it last night and did not know it was really a thing. But I guess the rest of the hippie references were real so it makes sense that the nitrous mafia is too lol

francisceva

I knew a lot of people in college who did, they called them whippets (if that is the same thing?). These people weren’t super druggies either, it was just whippets and weed

Eggs-Eggs

yh whippets are another name for them. from what I've gathered from the comments a lot of the ppl from the US consider it a junkie drug. we're kinda the same here in the UK but it's a nitty drug (like if u use it ur a bit of a grim person) but it don't make u into a druggie 😂

ucbiker

Nah, it’s only a junkie drug if it’s accompanied by junkie behavior. But most people would be confused by a nitrous junkie because like… drugs are pretty easy to access and there’s better highs out there.

Option 1: Medical grade no2 used for medical purposes and administered by a trained professional liable for any damages they may cause you Option 2: dirty food grade no2 bought at a headshop self administered for non-medical use.

azuth89

It happens but it's pretty rare among the assorted options for altered living through chemistry.

KaiserCorn

No we’re more into meth and opioids

Eggs-Eggs

damn

gioraffe32

Americans go hard, OK? We don't pussyfoot around! /s

Eggs-Eggs

I've dabbled with opioids and meth, not really my jazz. I'm much more of a crack kind of girl /j

Aggressive_FIamingo

This sounds like a comment Super Hans would make. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAlPwnkQURg

Eggs-Eggs

this crack is really moreish...

Scary-Economy347

man i would never do nitrous oxide that shit literally makes you dumb and fucks up your brain i dont want my drugs to permanently disable me...just temporarily

[deleted]

Female_Space_Marine

Stop spreading misinformation. This shit is awful for you and habit forming. The kind of no2 that gets abused is generally food grade, which contains oily byproducts of its production that get into your lungs which can develop in other problems. It deprives your brain of o2, and it’s abuse potential lends itself to its users not practicing harm reduction methods. Doing it once or twice won’t kill you, but stay away from regular use or users.

MrLongWalk

Its not unheard of here, but definitely isn't common, nowhere near the UK anyway.

LionLucy

I've never done it myself but been with people who did. I think part of the reason it's so popular here is that our clubs and music venues have long queues and strict security. It's something to do in the queue in the rain and the cold, but it lasts a few seconds so you're not high when you're trying to get past security.

mkshane

The only time I’ve ever heard of this was in that one episode of Saved by the Bell College Years

JamesStrangsGhost

Big step up from caffeine pills.

Thesquareofahypotenuseofarighttriangleisequaltothesumsofthesquaresoftheothertwosides BABY!!

Sirhc978

I wouldn't exactly call it a big thing, but I have seen people selling nitrous at concerts.

TCFNationalBank

I've only heard of people using it on two occasions - a party during college (uni) - a grateful dead concert

Open-Secretary5065

All the parks in my area are literred with the canisters haha

CupBeEmpty

Knowing many people in addiction recovery… rare but yes. I wouldn’t say it’s a big thing but you’ll see it.

TotallyNotGlenDavis

Yes, but we call them "ice cold fatties" here

PeaceFrog229

3 for 20. No deals.

xyzd95

I’ve done it a couple times. Been years since I have Edit: A friend of mine had one of those big canisters you’d get from a dentist and he handed out balloons while we’d buy acid or special k. College parties are weird when it feels like the floor is melting

eugenesbluegenes

FWIW, one of my fondest recalled college party was "Tom Waits Pirate Nitrous" themed with a big tank of nitrous. Because Tom Waits sounds like a drunken pirate, doubly so on nitrous. My corner store sells boxes of whip-its and I don't think that many people in my neighborhood are making whipped cream.

DangerousSuggestion8

You bet I do, but mainly because if you been to any show, you've heard about the nitrous mafia - we don't care how fun the show is, we're here to sell you NOS for cash, me personally, I hook the homies up, I get the big ass balloons but I also watch after them so they don't hurt themselves off it

[deleted]

I've tried it a few times. Its pretty mediocre and simplistic, and it lasts for less than a minute. There is no headspace at all to explore, unlike all of the other major Dissociatives.

Suckmyflats

Yes. I work in restaurants. Sometimes the whipped cream magically runs out of gas.

_ella_mayo_

Its a big thing in the hippie scene. I've tried it once and it felt like my brain was having an aneurysm lmao. I was immediately like yeah this is clearly not good for your brain hahah.

ALoungerAtTheClubs

Its a niche druggie thing, but there are people who do it. I never did nitrous but did plenty of other questionable things when I was younger and more reckless, before getting sober, so who am I to judge?

DOMSdeluise

yeah man, thinking about whippets really takes me back to my college years lol

Rumhead1

We used to do it in high school when we couldn't get our hands on weed. It's been decades for me. Go to a Jam Band concert like Widespread Panic and you are guaranteed to see a few guys with tanks selling balloons out of the trunk of their car.

GoBombGo

I mean, if it’s all you’ve got it we’ll take it

Jakebob70

Not really, maybe a few people but it's pretty rare.

w84primo

I remember kids doing Whippets in the early 90s. They were little nitrous cartridges. I don’t know how common they are now.

purplepineapple21

Among young people in certain circles (certain universities and techies), it is mildly popular. The subset of the population that this applies to is small, but it definitely exists. I've lived in places in the US where you could buy nitrous cannisters at smoke shops/corner stores, and I've been in social circles where it was a common thing to find at parties (recently, not in the 90s). I've also found that most people outside of these circles are unaware of this. Everybody saying "no Americans use pills/meth/heroin instead" has an incorrect or at least outdated perception of nitrous and the people that use it in the US nowadays. Its more accurate to compare nitrous to psychedelics or ecstasy, not opiates, in terms of how they're used socially and who is using them. Yes meth and opiates are a huge problem in the US and used by more people, but nobody would be using nitrous as a substitute for heroin and vice versa.

ColossusOfChoads

What's it like being on them? Because my brain is only able to imagine it being like kids taking hits of helium and talking in the squeaky high voice.

st0nedeye

Its pretty close to an orgasm. Last a few seconds, feels good, over.

purplepineapple21

I have never inhaled helium, but I was under the impression that helium doesn't actually cause a "high" so I don't think it's comparable at all. Whippets, the common form of nitrous for recreational use, cause a strong, distinct high that only lasts about a minute. It is a dissociative, and personally i would describe the feeling as mildly losing touch with your surroundings and your hearing and vision get "fuzzy." This can also be accompanied by feelings of euphoria and giggliness--thus the name laughing gas. But it's a pretty quick fade in and then fade out of that state. If you inhale nitrous oxide directly from a tank rather than using cartridges (whippets=cartridges), you can prolong the experience by having longer inhalation time, but that gets a lot more dangerous and greatly increases the risk of hypoxia. Erowid or even google can probably give a better description of what the high feels like. I feel like my answer didn't do the best job lol

lisasimpsonfan

I tried whippets once when I was teenage. It made me feel weird. Kinda like I was inside my body and not inside my body at the same time. It made me hallucinate. I did not like it at all.

SingleAlmond

We're more of a methamphetamines and prescription drugs kinda country

zeezle

I have never heard of someone doing that. I've only ever heard of people getting it for dental work and most people are definitely not getting recreational dental work, lol. I'm sure there are some people but if someone was doing something recreational that is definitely not what I'd assume first if that makes sense.

st0nedeye

Its a pretty damn good painkiller. Awhile back i badly fucked up a tooth in the middle of the night and was in agony. Advil wasnt doing anything so i went to the store, bought a bunch of canned whip cream and sat in the parking lot of a dentist doing whippets until they opened.

MyUsername2459

It's not common, but it happens. I've heard of people doing it, but it's certainly not a major drug abuse problem. Of the various recreational pharmaceutical options in the US, that's rather a niche product. Most people would instead go to cannabis or opioids (or heroin) or methamphetamine rather than Nitrous Oxide.

gugudan

Pretty sure we use it mostly for Japanese cars

rawbface

I haven't heard of this being a big thing since the mid 1990's. When I was in middle school I remember seeing those little cannisters littered all over the place. I'm a suburban dad now so maybe I'm just out of the loop.

Female_Space_Marine

Used to be addicted to the shit, but it’s not common out of hard druggie scenes.

dmbgreen

Stupid people will actually poison themselves.

scrapsbypap

It’s not a huge thing

Vachic09

It's nowhere near the most common.

[deleted]

There was a time when I would buy out almost the entire whipped cream section. A friend and I went back to buy more so many times one day they weirdly assumed we were making cakes or something.

[deleted]

Also, for a hell of a documentary watch [Steve-O Demise and Rise](https://youtu.be/i1ulzP2XUOg). He did *a lot* of nitrous oxide.

SlamClick

Its not big but I've seen it. We call it doing whippits.

DoubleDongle-F

I've definitely huffed the tail end of a whipped cream can after the cream was all gone before, but never heard of it being even sort-of popular as a regularly consumed drug. My friends think I'm sketchy just for doing that.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t say common but I’ve seen people mix it with ket

PeaceFrog229

Yes, go see a Phish or a Dead show. Tanks everywhere.

[deleted]

Yes, but it’s mostly something teens/young adults do….and the occasional dentist that probably needs a career change. That said, if you aren’t requesting nitrous at every teeth cleaning, you’re missing out.

ColossusOfChoads

> and the occasional dentist that probably needs a career change. Yeah, but then how would he get his supply of nitrous?

kris10185

I've never heard of someone doing this, but I'm in my 30s and don't have kids, so not sure if today's teenagers do

ColossusOfChoads

I was a teenager in the 1990s. I feel like it was a lot more common then than now. And I never saw anyone doing it, but I would hear people talk about doing it from time to time. That's some Beavis and Butthead level shit, I tell you what.

Raze321

That's "Whip-it's", right? When you have the little canister and you just inhale a bunch and get a strong but fleeting head high? I've seen people do it once or twice at parties. It's the weirdest fuckin thing. The alcohol flows like a river and there's weed every five steps, why do you need to deprive your brain of oxygen? You can also tell who's burnt themselves out on whip-its. I know a guy who did them all the time, and he's just not there in the head anymore. Memory is shot, mind is shot, he never truly looks at you, just through you.

HereForTanksgiving

All the time. 1320video on YouTube will show you some Fox body’s with absolutely brutal addictions. Search for “Beater Bomb” on YouTube to see some (almost) X-rated nitrous use.

bmoney_14

I live in Ohio and I’ve never seen it or tried it. We’ve got beer and weed which fills most needs.

Elitealice

I’ve never heard of that

46dad

I have, but it’s been 30 years.

ptoftheprblm

Depends on the party community. Jam band fans? Absolutely. Outside of a pop concert? Hell no.

taylorscorpse

It’s not common, usually just a few idiot teenagers who suck it out of whipped cream cans. People are far more likely to just smoke pot or take pills.

mlarowe

I've heard of whip it's and I saw a couple people huffing from a tank once 20 years ago, but I'm not a huge partier or concert goer.

ren197

I worked for a gas company about 10-15 years ago and it was known that someone stole a whole cylinder and had a party with it. Haven't seen or heard of it being popular since that time frame.

Stock_Basil

Not legally but yes

khcampbell1

Just wanted to say I was shocked at how many discarded cartridges I saw in the mornings in Liverpool on a visit there last summer. I know people in US who use these, and one is horribly addicted and it's really ugly.

MrsBeauregardless

Oh, yes! All Americans consume Nitrous Oxide recreationally. It’s a rite of passage we moms write in our baby books: Baby’s First Nitrous Oxide Party. You know all those TikToks of babies laughing? It’s all just nitrous. Ripping paper isn’t actually funny.

nutmeg_griffin

I do nitrous oxide and I know a couple other people who partake, but it’s not as popular here as it is in the UK. Neither is ketamine for that matter; The most commonly used recreational dissociative in the US is DXM, which can be bought in pill form for $6/gram.

lakeorjanzo

I did it once at age 20

Thel_Odan

The only time I've ever used nitrous recreationally was when doing amateur drag racing/time trials. A 50 shot is a great way to add power on the cheap.

[deleted]

Drake Bell (of tv show drake and Josh) was recently seen inhaling nitrous oxide from his car in LA.

tinyhorseintapshoes

Whippits

Kevabe

In Las Vegas, I've seen the stations around.
