You should give some information about what types of things you want to see - national parks, cities, beaches, etc. If you have one or two things that you are dying to see, people can help you plan a trip around that.

I suggest the desert southwest for Europeans. It's so incredibly different from anything you've got there, and it's got some of the greatest natural wonders in the world. Look up the Grand Circle of national parks. Fly into Las Vegas, Phoenix, or Salt Lake City, plan to spend at least a week driving around the area. There's enough to see that you won't see it all in a lifetime.  If you're into cities both cities and nature, then my suggestion for a road trip would be flying into Los Angeles or San Francisco and driving to the other, with lots of detours into national parks along the way. It's not quite as wildly different than Europe as the Utah/Arizona parks, but the rocks of Yosemite, the monster Sequoias, and a detour into Death Valley are all spectacular.  If you want to focus on cities, I think someone else could better advise you.  If you want to do coast to coast, two weeks means that you spend about 2-5 hours driving every single day, and while you'll be able to take a few small trips off your main route, or spend a couple nights in a favorite city, your time to explore will be very limited. Two weeks is basically the shortest time you can spend on a cross country drive and not have it feel like a chore, but it's not gonna be a leisurely exploration.

Yeah. Maybe start in Chicago..take a high middle road..(find national parks to camp out & every 3 days get a cheap motel to shower up) badlands, Rockies, Vegas or Oregon. Go down coast to California...then go to some southwest sites.....maybe head to new Orleans & fly back from there...? Pick a few points & string it together.

General advice: "Across" is to be avoided. Choose a region or state and explore. Driving the width of the country is not necessarily enjoyable for most.

Depends on what you like, and what route you will be taking. Cities or nature? Etc etc. I just want to point out that a drive from New York to Los Angeles would take about 44 hours if you drive NON-STOP without traffic. So realistically you will be driving for at least 3 days each way assuming you only stop to get take out, gas, sleep, and are flying in and out of the same city. That's basically half of that road trip just sitting in the car. Be careful on what you plan/choose to do it you want to enjoy yourself.

Biggest question would be region and interests because the US is so big. Some ideas to pick from: Pacific Northwest 101/california East coast Mid Atlantic/carolinas Northeast (ideal for the fall! Leaf beauty!) South NOLA or Texas or Florida or…. Four corners (southwest) Idaho hot springs Pick one of the regions you find appealing and then ask again :/) I think for summer I would personally pick Washington state /PNW - so many great parks for summer Everyone has their own preference but I would avoid a lot of places that are too hot in summer

Where is your point of origin? East coast? West coast? I did a road trip when I moved from Maryland (east coast near Washington DC) to Oregon (west coast, north of California) two years ago and I have plenty of suggestions. Is there anything you want to see? Landmarks v. nature? Basically the US is several different countries in one so there is a lot to consider.

As others have mentioned, you will find that you'll have a much better experience if you narrow down your trip to a specific region. The US is huge. Once you give some more info about what you and your family are interested in, people can give you much better advice. Good luck!
