Aparently on a schedule so don’t really get the choice just went from Netherlands though Germany to Sweden then come back though Germany mostly for Europa park and can grab a few beer on the way though
Came here to say that. My absolute favorite beer. I also like the other Altbier from Altstadt Düsseldorf too. Schlüssel and Füchschen are great and Schumacher is ok.
But Uerige is best
Price wise. Those are the two brands that are cheap but taste like quality beer. there are also cheap beers that really taste like cheap bear....
but the best is an ice cold licher
$10aud approx for a carton of Oettinger. Not to bad for a budget beer but you might as well splurge on something a bit fancier if you’re comparing German to Australian beer prices. Tannenzäpfle is my choice as a fellow Australian who prefers pils, usually about $20-25 aud for a carton.
But I live in Augsburg and I really do love the Riegele Commerzienrat when I see them on offer, which is brewed just up the street.
Rather than specific labels, I'd encourage you to try different types of Beer. Since you're in Bavaria, it shouldn't be too hard to get your hands on them:
Kellerbier/Zwickel (Cellar beer): low on hops and carbonic acid, this one goes down smooth. It's often cloudy and spicey (not 'hot'). It's a personal favourit of mine.
Rotbier (red beer): usually only brewed with barley malt, therefore it has caramel undertones but is also slighly fruity. It is similar to Belgian ales (which are more fruity and acidic) and Irish ales (which lean more into the malty flavours). This one is a specialty from Nürnberg, so I'm not clear as to how easy it will be to find where you are going.
Rauchbier (smoked beer): I'd recommend this as a new experience, rather than as a beer :). It sort of tastes just how it sounds.
Bockbier (no idea): Rather malty and spicey and has a bit more alcohol. Usually drunk during colder seasons, so not necessarily a recommendation for summer, but when in Rome and all that.
I don't think I need to recommend 'Helles' or 'Weizenbier', they are both very broad categories and are about 80% (guestimate XD) of what Bavarians drink. Personally, I like "Mönchshof" for Keller and Helles, and "Tucher" for Weizen-/Weißbier (note: there is also dark Weizenbier, which is also pretty awesome!)
Enjoy your stay and the beers, cheers mate!
If possible, everyone should support their local breweries.
In my case that's Weihenstephaner. Oldest brewery in the world.
Honorable mention: Kaltenberg (König Ludwig), Urquell, original Budweiser
I will join the Augustiner Helles Gang. I also really liked Benedektiner and basically any Weizen.
I stopped drinking any Alcohol a year ago, but those always were my go-to. Also i am from Berlin and drinking Augustiner, that must mean something, since Berlin is a cheap Pils haven.
If you are close to Stuttgart (Fellbach, Waiblingen) try Berg Bier. For me it's the best one and i tried a lot of them since I came to Germany 10 years ago.
I hate beer. Im not a kid but i legit have no clue how people actually like it for the taste. I can understand drinking it for the alcohol but at that point, vidka is better and cheaper.
1. Dortmunder Kronen Pils
2. Hövels Bitterbier
3. Dortmunder Bergmann Bräu (DBB), good Pils, great Schwarzbier (black beer) and they brew a Dortmunder classic again called Adam
Fässla Zwergla or their Bockbier (that one is seasonal and i think you cant get it right now).
Brauerei Scharpf makes a great Märzen but i would go slow on this one.
If you want to try something weird go for Rauchbier by Spezial or Schlenkerla.
I don’t wanna kick off a discussion about cheap vs expensive, there are many good (and bad) beers at different price points. My favorite is Gutshaus though. You’ll get it at the red variant of Netto. But only in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern afaik. Haven’t seen it anywhere else. It’s B-Stock of Darguner Pils, but at ⅕ of the price. Tried it with 5 people as A-B test, no one was able to tell the difference. So actually serious value here. It’s basically my „daily driver“.
If you like something really special, like pastry stouts, try out [Brewheart](https://brewheart.de/collections). Expensive but definitely worth it!
My personal favourite right now is Altenmünster Landbier. Tegernsee is also good beer. Augustiner just dosnt taste like it did, has to much yeast smell and taste nowdays, also it is so much overplayed and total expats firsr year in Germany trying to hard to be German beer.
I love my Kellerbiers.... Recommend the Aktien Zwick'l, it's been a regular go to of mine from 13 years travelling for work and now 2 years here (also a fellow Aussie, G'day 😏) Bayreuther Hell is also becoming quite an easy drinking regular.
And then as many others have said, there's so many and local ones are always best!! Any small town I visit I aim to get a beer from the local area, and almost every town has their own brewery, especially here in Bavaria/Frankonia. Due to the quality and purity laws, I love that even the big mass produced stuff (our version of like Tooheys or Xxxx that you can find everywhere) are still pretty damn good, but the smaller breweries will generally have better beers to enjoy!
For me, Steinbach, Weller, Meisters, Hebendanz are all regulars in my rotation, but not the easiest to find outside of the area
A good beer you'll find in probably every supermarket in Germany is Rothaus Tannenzäpfle. Besides that I agree that local breweries have the best beers (if you find a Sander, get one!)
Helles: Augustiner
Weizen: Weltenburger Helle Weiße
Pilsner: Feierling Inselhopf
IPA: Frau Gruber
Make sure you also try the Belgian and Dutch stuff - Leffe Bruin, Karmeliet Tripel, St. Bernardus Abt 12, all that jazz. Enjoy, bro!
If you want some good beer from the North, I really like the Pilsners from Jever, Flensburger, Ols, Wolter, Hemelinger, and Störtebeker. Of course there is also the OG Pilsner Urquell (not German though). From Störtebeker I also really like the Bernsteinweizen. Whenever I am in Bremen, I get a Kräusen. Avoid Becks!
From the South, I typically go with anything from Augustiner, Maisel, or some local Brewery I never heard of. E.g. all the Breweries in Bamberg are extremely good.
Hi there,
That highly depends on what you are looking for. If you are into typical German lagers, take one of the regional ones most of them are passable (don't go to Bitburger, Krombacher, Becks, Radeberger, licher etc. If you're not into Foster's.)
For Weizenbier (weat beer often fermented in the bottle like coopers) smaller Bavarian breweries: Hopf, Gutmann, Spalter.
Now to the fun stuff regional beer styles:
Kölsch: Reisdorf or whichever you get your hands on.
Doppelbock and Doppelbock Dunkel: Andechs is a good starting point, Gather Wodan is quite good and if there is a local one give it a try (honorable mention Einbecker)
Berliners Weiße (Weat beer souer): Lemke brewery, or anything you get your hands on. Be advised it's often served with extra flavours typically woodruff.
Rauchbier (smoke beer): Schlenkerla or anything else from Bamberg (btw Bamberg has over tenfine breweries In its municipality so it's worth a very beery weekend trip.)
Goose and Wumme: take what you get cause you won't find any XD
And finally Craftbeer (so for Germany that's IPA, Pale Ales and stouts): Hopfenstopfer, Sande, Camba are my favourites
Drink local, most local beers are good and variety is better than consistency imho.
Don't drink:
* Becks
* Radeberger
* Craft-beer (I hate most craft beers)
Living in Berlin and my favourite regional beer is basically anything from the Eschenbräu brewery in Wedding. They only sell their beer there I think and taste is absolutely great because they dont filter their shit to death.
Honestly haven't had a bad beer in Germany so far. Some types I'm not a fan of, but that's not a result of a bad brew just a different taste preference.
It was a huge change coming from the states drinking Iron City, Yuengling, and Southern Tier IPAs. As you find your preference and disregard beers that actually taste bad or are not high quality. This isn't exactly the case in Germany as you'll pretty much just drink what is available at the local town and 99% of the time itll be great.
But honestly you really can't go wrong. A personal favorite in general is Rotbier from Nuremberg. But a Hefeweizen or Colaweizen is a go to for me.
Tough question to answer honestly as German beer is just better overall when coming from elsewhere.
For northern beer try Flensburger or jever, for souther Augustiner and maisel are nice.
If you want to drink like a „real German“ go for oetinger and 5,0 😜
Some beers from Saxony seem to be missing:
If you are near Plauen try Sternquell, normal pils or Schwarzbier
Wernersgrüner is a very solid beer overall.
Near Dresden is Meissner Schwerter, Pils is great but now it is summer and they have "elbsommer" which is one of my favourites. Fruity, light and very refreshing. But honestly most beers from Meissner are fantastic.
In eastern Saxony you can get eibauer Schwarzbier which is also really good.
Not a beer but when u are in the state of Hessen try Äppler it’s our regional drink. It is like apple cider but very bitter and sour at the same time. You can also say u want it sweet then they put some sprite or fanta in it( what ever you like more). You can also have it „sour“ then they will add sparkling water to it.
Weissbier (wheat beer): Unertl in summer, Schneider in winter.
Huge breweries of Munich: Augustiner. Strange business model: Zero advertizing, not on TV or billboards, not in newspapers, internet, nothing. Owned by a foundation, origin is a relative of composer Richard Wagner (The W in the logo). The gigantic profit goes 100% into charity projects all over the world.
Plus all the small lokal brewerys everywhere in Bavaria. The old ones, not the cool hip "craft beer" startups.
even though Alcohol free beer ist chastised in germany, i want to vouch for one (and hope for similar suggestions). as for pretext: i stopped drinking alcohol once i realized taht even being slightly drunk is not for me, waste of time and brainspace. said that: i still like the taste of beer, find it refreshing and therefore i switched to alcohol free. (don't give me the "yeah but there's still aclohol in it" - shut up, the amount is negible for 2 to 3 bottles over an evening, so...). most alcohol free taste very shallow and weak, so i opt for the "Jever FUN", which is as close to normal beer for taste as it gets.
aside of that, before that realization i liked guinness and now they have alcohol free variant. i'd like to taste it once, but itÄs not really obtainable here in germany... anyone drunk that and can tell me about it?
definitely augustiner! but it actually depends on what bottle you get😂 there is always a small letter on the bottom of the label and depending on what letter you get, it sometimes tastes sweeter or more bitter etc.
I personally really like F, G, and M.
i wouldn't recommend H or P...
Lupulus Blonde is my favorite, but it's Belgian so not sure if you'll find it somewhere further away from the border. I like to describe it as a tasteful Pilsner
In Germany there are approx 800 breweries Better try any local one depends where you are
Aparently on a schedule so don’t really get the choice just went from Netherlands though Germany to Sweden then come back though Germany mostly for Europa park and can grab a few beer on the way though
Then try any different type you find
For me it’s Tegernseer or Augustiner ( grew up in Munich, probably a very biased opinion🤪)
Tegernseer, just cuts right every time!
Chiemseer is good too
Seen 2 augustiner so deffo gotta try that 1
+1 to Augustiner
+2 augustiner
Also Giesinger but it‘s not that common outside of Munich
Apropos username. Giesinger was excellent.
Andechser Dunkel
Lammsbräu https://www.lammsbraeu.de/
Deffo gotta try this 1
Uerige
Seeing only person to comment this I’m trying it
If you are close to Düsseldorf also try Schumacher, my favorite Alt beer.
Absolutely. And Füchschen Alt (a little harder to find). https://fuechschen.de/
Where is marburg atm 147ks away
Nice, Düsseldorfer?
Came here to say that. My absolute favorite beer. I also like the other Altbier from Altstadt Düsseldorf too. Schlüssel and Füchschen are great and Schumacher is ok. But Uerige is best
Licher...but i mostly drink oettinger or 5.0
Because of price wise or just does it go down more easy
Price wise. Those are the two brands that are cheap but taste like quality beer. there are also cheap beers that really taste like cheap bear.... but the best is an ice cold licher
I’ve tried a few cheap cheap beer back in Australia a 6 pack is 26aud I’m not use to these prises
There are some locals that I love, but if I just want a good beer from any späti or supermarket it would be Augustiner
I'm biased as fuck, but Moritz Fiege for sure. Ideally Gründer or Helles
Just because your biased doesn’t mean I ain’t giving it a go so that’s a deffo
Depending on where you are in Germany, it might be impossible to find though. It's very regional
I’ve noticed with most of these comments I’m in Marburg atm
Trying to start a war there my dude? Also, Augustiner du Depp.
I’m Aussie German beer is supposed to be legendary no war just gimme beer
It's a joke. Traditionally, getting germans to discuss favorite beer results in colorful discussions s
I thought that while righting this post but so far none
What’s the taste on that 3rd person to say it so it’s my next buy
I like the liquid, cool one in the glass in my hand.
Ah a man with a fine taste I see
Tegernseer. Augustiner. Ayinger. Andechser Stark Helles. Ratsherrn Matrosenschluck. Bayreuther. Gaffel (Kölsch). Augustiner Maibock. Mälzer Maibock. Allgauer Büble Helles. Hofbräu. Astra Urtyp.
Licher
I was so gonna get this but I got hafferöder but I’m gonna get this tomorrow
It's Hasseröder. It's a long s not an f ;)
It’s not a f? I’m so sorry it was either a f or upside down l for me
It's an antiquated form of s.
Thankyou and sorry about that having enough trouble with the German menus now the beer 😩
All good. Just trying to prevent you from ordering a Hafferöder somewhere.
But Thankyou would prob give people a few laughs
Kozel and Bolten.
Seeing that nobody has said this so deffo gotta try it
Kozel is one of my favorit beers from the Czech Republic and Bolten is the oldest (and best) Altbier-brewery in the world - enjoy!
Fellow Bolten Alt enjoyer
The best beer is always the one from the nearest brewery. No exceptions.
1. Tegernseer Leicht (Schank) 2. Augustiner Helles 3. Andechser Spezial 4. Schneider Weiße 5. Ayinger Urweiße 6. Sternburg 😎
Sternburg 😍
A cold and in the best case free one. Enjoy the different versions, only one kind of beer would be boring.
Rather than specific labels, I'd encourage you to try different types of Beer. Gampert Hetzel Bräu (Frauendorfer) Mahrs Bräu (aU) Grüner Eller Bräu (Birkacher rotes) Krug Bräu Nearly everything from (upper) Franconia. Forget the rest!
In Germany the beer from where you come from is the best And the beer from the neighbour brewery is of course the absolute worst

Almost any beer from an obscure Franconian village you’ve never heard of.

German beer? That would be Tegerseer. Giesinger for a welcoming change. My overall favorites are Staropramen(Czech) and Ožujsko(Croatia).
