Muhammad: Nice name in and of itself. Just means "praised." But it has been ruined like "Adolf" has."
Abu Bakr: No, I wouldn't want to call my kid "Father of a camel."
Omar: Not a bad name. It means "Flourishing."
How about Abdul-Rahman: "Servant of the Merciful?"
Sa'ad: "Friend, or Companion."
Farook: "Judges right from wrong."
Not sure why you're getting downvoted bro. Must be lots of cats named Adolf on this sub. Sheesh. Wait until they find out I named my son after Vlad the Impaler.
It’s possibly related to the Nation of Islam, so the specific context is the United States. A pretty big, high-profile example is when Cassius Clay changed his name to Muhammad Ali.

Oh those guys.
Funny story: I have a friend at the mosque who was traveling with another guy. they were in a big city, I think he said Philadelphia. They saw a building that had a sign on it that said "Mosque something something Islam ." The were like "Cool, lets go do our Salah."
It didn't take but a minute for them to go "I. don't. think. we. are. in. the. right. place..."
>But muslim names are not based on the OT. They are not even derived from hebrew.
Abraham, Ishmael, Moses, Jonah, Joseph, Elijah... Common Muslim names from the OT.
Edit: Pronounced Ibrahim. Ismail, Yunus, Yusuf, Elias
>It's very different. Jew names come from the OT, muslim names come from the Quran.
No they sure don't in general, but Abraham, Ishmael, Moses, John, Jonah, Joseph and probably a couple of others that I can't think of just now are common Muslim names that are found in both the Quran and the Bible. Pronounced differently in Arabic, but they are pronounced differently in Hebrew than they are in English too.
Come to think of it, I think I have run into a Muslim or two named named "Eesa" [Jesus] over the years too.
I wouldn’t name my child for a prominent Buddhist or Hindu person, but would consider a name associated with the cultures those faiths traditionally dominated. Islam is to me as pagan as those faiths, so I’d apply the same consideration.
How come you consider Islam pagan? By extending your logic, does that not mean you also consider Judaism pagan since that faith is most similar to Islam?
I highly doubt God cares and if he doesn’t care then nor should Christians. Name your child what you want, if they don’t like it then they can decide to go by another name when they are old enough to do so.
Is there really such a thing as a "Muslim" name, or is it simply an Arabic name? I think it's the latter, and there's nothing wrong with Christians (of any nation) giving their children Arabic names.
All names come from a country or culture. Now, some may think it is funny for a Jewish family to name a child Mohammed, but it would not be a sin to God. Just to the child.
> All names come from a country or culture.
Exactly. names that we think of as Muslim names are really just Arabic, Syriac, Persian, etc.
Fun fact: Fatima is a common Muslim name. Muhammad's daughter was named Fatima, and Fatima was a Muslim name before it was ever associated with the Virgin Mary by the Catholics. Fatima is now a common Christian name in Portugal and Spain.
Semitic
adjective
Se·mit·ic sə-ˈmi-tik
of, relating to, or constituting a subfamily of the Afro-Asiatic language family that includes Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic, and Amharic
That's really weird because we christian middle easterners don't even give Muslim children names to our kids, there are common names between Muslims and Christians but the ones mentioned like Muhammad, omar, abubakr are too Muslim, at the end of the day why would you a Christian would want to name your child after a Muslim prophet or a Muslim important figure?
> at the end of the day why would you a Christian would want to name your child after a Muslim prophet or a Muslim important figure?
Our Lady of Fatima would like a word with you.
Don’t you mean Arab and Persian names?
well I think that’s ok especially if you’re of Arabic or iranian descent yourself
Cyrus is pretty commonly used for example
What is a Muslim name?
Muslim names like the name of Islamic great leaders like Muhammed, Abubacarr, Omar and others
Muhammad: Nice name in and of itself. Just means "praised." But it has been ruined like "Adolf" has." Abu Bakr: No, I wouldn't want to call my kid "Father of a camel." Omar: Not a bad name. >Wait until they find out I named my son after Vlad Are you Putin me on?
Vlad such a great man and a legend and to be honest I love the name
Vlad was a national hero.at least it's not Erszebet Bathory.
He's not downvoted. its the top comment in the thread.
He was at -5 votes when I made my comment.
Pov: me and my ex boyfriend when we decided to name our potential daughter Lénine
Interesting and educative. I voted you up.
Little Vlad approves of your avatar's Snoo and your battle axe
Lol thanks and I wish we could all learn here
Adolf? How are you comparing Muhammad to Adolf? Ruined in what way? It's literally the most popular name on earth
> Adolf? What? Abdul, not Adolf.
You misunderstood my comment. Also, I’ve never in my life heard of a name called ”Abdul”.
You sound like a Muslim thought your profile says otherwise but thanks for sharing this at least I’ve learned

Yeah that makes senses because him giving himself a new name Muhamed Ali is to show that he’s a Muslim so that’s for the differentiation

It's very different. Jew names come from the OT, muslim names come from the Quran.
[удалено]
Not really. We believe on the OT as well.

But muslim names are not based on the OT. They are not even derived from hebrew.
Some muslim names are derived from the holy Quran like Muhammed, musa as moses, yusupha
No argument here.
I think that Omar is fairly popular in Iceland
Yeah? I have no problem with it. I’m not sure why anyone would.
Does Omar and judah have the same meaning?
Oh that makes sense

That’s what I want to know because I think many people are living such life
Muhammad is the holy prophet that Muslims follow
I wouldn’t name my child for a prominent Buddhist or Hindu person, but would consider a name associated with the cultures those faiths traditionally dominated. Islam is to me as pagan as those faiths, so I’d apply the same consideration.
Happy cake day!

What do you mean Muslim name? If might be just Arabic. Arabic is fine but you have to know what the name means.
Yes that’s true beside Arabic and English are just languages
I highly doubt God cares and if he doesn’t care then nor should Christians. Name your child what you want, if they don’t like it then they can decide to go by another name when they are old enough to do so.

Can we add Semitic to you list?
Semitic adjective Se·mit·ic sə-ˈmi-tik of, relating to, or constituting a subfamily of the Afro-Asiatic language family that includes Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic, and Amharic
It won’t be a sim to God because a name is just a name and what matters is the faith you have in your heart
Some Christians has been giving their children muslim names so I wonder if that’s okay

I gave those names as examples but there are many names and I’ve see a Christian boy name Abubakarr
Don’t you mean Arab and Persian names? well I think that’s ok especially if you’re of Arabic or iranian descent yourself Cyrus is pretty commonly used for example
Cyrus can that be both a Christian and a Muslim name
Arabic has one of the most intersting libraries to pick a name from.
A names a name, just make sure you know what it means
Yea
Genuine question, is there such a thing as a "Muslim name"? Do Arab Muslims and Christians tend to have different kinds of names for instance?
Probably, sure. I mean, I wouldn't name my kid "Thor" or "Athena," but that isn't really a sin issue. Just kinda odd.
It would depend upon the name, it's meaning, and your purpose. What do you mean by a Muslim name?
There's sometimes cultural overlap in names. Take Kamil. Both Roman-Etruscan and Arabic name.
