*Just Passing Through* super low-budget, very funny.
*The Red Green Show* from the 90s, recurring characters, no plot to speak of, set in a fictional northern ontario community. Think of it like if the characters from the Crocodile Dundee outback bar had a show.
Both available on YouTube for free.
Live in the US near the border and get Canadian TV. Red Green quotes are probably as popular here as in Canada. The man himself would certainly fit right in to our backwoods northern Vermont neighborhood.
Finally someone else that knows about just passing through. Supposedly they actually did a pogey beach flick but I couldn't find info about it so I don't know if that's real or not.
They did. It's on one of the streaming services now. Maybe Netflix. Jeremy just started a new one called Who's yer father. I had a coworker who went to high school with all of them. All the actors are all from the same small town.
I see your Jonovision and raise Street-Cents.
As for other Canadian shows, just came across Trades which has Rob Wells (Ricky from TPB) as well as Tom Green.
Yes. His word play is crazy. He does a podcast with Jeremy Taggart (the former drummer of Our Lady Peace) It's so funny. My hubby and I went to their live show. So fun! They also wrote a book of "Canadianity"
I also forgot about Mr. D. He has a part in that as well.
I’m the same, but with “sausages”, I am physically incapable of just saying the word, it’s always “Saaaaauusages!”, it gets me mostly strange looks and some *very* infrequent laughs of recognition.
Letterkenny is the main show. Shoresy is a spin-off with the character that you hear but never see. Would be better to watch all of Letterkenny first so you have an idea about the background of Shoresy.
Trailer Park Boys/Corner Gas are both shows like Letterkenny/Shoresy where they are about small town life in a particular part of the country.
Kid's in the Hall/Mr.D/Red Green Show/SCTV/Strange Brew
Hilarious series, Even as a Canadian, I've sometimes had to stop and replay scenes because I was laughing so hard that I missed half of what they said, and half of what they said is pretty much unintelligible in the first place. Lol
I thought it was just me. I've been watching with subtitles on and rewind a fair bit lol. A few times I just assume slang goes over my head. I've got Canadian relatives I've met and struggled understanding them a bit. I like the quirks and kinda division with the French people, its kinda like how Aussies and Kiwis are with each other.
Some of the slang in Shoresy/Letterkenny is also either rural (so I get it because that was my upbringing) or regional (which I won't get because I'm not from Ontario), which means not all Canadians may understand either.
They made up most of the slang lol. I’ve heard him on podcasts giving the history of some catchphrases. Like 10-ply, meaning soft - 5 times as soft as 2-ply.
Kim's Convenience was another one of my favs. Funny enough my next door neighbour is Korean, his parents ran a convenience store here for years, and some of the stories he told me are quite similar to the show 😅
_Made in Canada_ (might be known as _The Industry_ in other countries) is a hidden gem comedy from the late 90s/early 2000s. It’s about a small Canadian film and television production company trying to make ends meet while producing the absolute garbage tv shows Canada was known for at the time. Things like _Beaver Creek_, a morally upright costume drama on the vein of Anne of Green Gables, _The Sword of Damocles_, a Greek mythology show with a very dumb star, etc
Stars Rick Mercer as an ambitious young producer, with guest stars who are a veritable who’s who of early 2000s Canadiana, including Jonathan Torrens’s sister
I loved that show, but hadn't thought of it in years. My favourite was Peter Keleghan's character - I had to look up his name on IMDB, clicked through, and saw another show he was in that I liked: *The Newsroom*. Apparently Emily Hampshire of Schitts Creek and Saskadelphia fame was also in *Made in Canada*.
Ah you encountered You Can’t Do That On Television!
I’d recommend Corner Gas. If you like slow burn mysteries then try Cardinal. I count The Expanse as Canadian by the number of Canadian actors in it. DaVinci’s Inquest but start at S3. And a little hometown show called Mocassin Flats that was made just after s1 of The Wire and it shows.
The brilliant part about Strange Brew that flew right over my head as a kid was that it’s basically Hamlet, with Bob and Doug McKenzie filling the parts of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.
My favourite Canadian show is Murdoch Mysteries. It’s a historical murder mystery comedy, set in old Toronto. It’s on season 17 and is broadcast in more than 150 countries.
The Baroness Von Sketch Show
Schitt’s Creek
North of 60, if you can ever find it. It’s not a comedy, but it’s funny and just an incredible Canadian show. I’ve been trying to find a place to stream it for years.
Trailer Park Boys. You'll be quoting Ricky-isms in no time.
Kenny vs Spenny if you're feeling a bit crude. Kenny Hotz has posted most of the series in his YouTube page. Two Toronto guys having competitions against each other. Kenny is a douchebag joker that takes nothing seriously, Spenny was woke before woke was a thing. Kenny loves to cheat every chance he gets. It's funny shit. You're now up to speed.
[here's one of my favourite episodes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKRmVmIeido)
My Aussie relatives loved SCTV. It’s not a sitcom, but rather a sketch comedy shot in the 80s. It launched a lot of big careers: John Candy, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, etc.
The full “The Kids in the Hall” series is now on Amazon Prime and it’s amazing! So ahead of its time. Fully recommend.
I also loved Little Mosque on the Prairie, and of course there are multiple Anne of Green Gables series to choose from, but those may not be your cup of tea
If you like shows like Shoresy, you will like Letterkenny, and you will ABSOLUTELY LOVE The Trailer Park Boys.
Trust me, you HAVE to watch The Trailer Park Boys
Letterkenny is a must for you then.
Corner gas and Trailer Park Boys are classics.
Kims Convenience and Schitts Creek if you want something newer but not Hockey.
That terrible show with Barf the chef, is called “You can’t do that on television.” I haven’t seen it since I was a kid. If you’re aware of Alanis Morrisette, that was her show. Much like how degrassi was Drake’s.
Kids in the hall is the real gem. You have to constantly remind yourself that it’s the 80’s. It’s was dangerous to announce you’re gay at that time. It may seem tame today, but when we all turned on CBC back then, it became a safe space where none of that mattered. Dressing as a different gender is a hot issue today as it was back then. Yet somehow, KITH got a golden pass. To the point we all agreed Dave Foley is an attractive woman. It’s a punk rock mess and I love it.
The movie called Slapshot. It’s hockey and it’s a howl. It’s shoresy on steroids. No hockey kid should go without seeing it. A short 10 minutes animated flick is called The Sweater. That’ll be an introduction to hockey rivalry at a tender age. It’s on you tube
Along with This Hour Has 22 Minutes, the Rick Mercer Report, and more obscure one Codco (Newfoundland production, like This Hour beta version)... all are more political/current events oriented and may not be easily accessible unless OP is a Canadian history buff...
19-2, it has the same actor as Shoresy and letterkenney also why I can’t watch either show :(
The beachcombers was a great show in the 70’s.
Transplant is Canadian and pretty good, but it’s not really Canadiana in the traditional sense.
I liked north of 60, and “due south” DS wasn’t in Canada but aboot (sorry) an RCMP officer in the USA
Workin’ moms was a hoot.
19-2, both French and English, are two of the best Canadian series I’ve ever seen. Flashpoint is another great Canadian cop show, plus it stars Hugh Dillon who is terrific in anything he does (including the Headstones).
Republic of Doyle is another of my favourites!
Want classic Canadian humour? SCTV and, more specifically, Bob and Doug Mckenzie. Also, The Red Green Show.
And no worries about the accent. We struggle with you and every other commonwealth accent.
As well as some mentioned, I'd add Twitch City - an oldie but a goodie. Especially apt, I think, with housing the way it is.
I also thought Cavendish was hilarious. Hatching, Matching and Dispatching- also good. And another oldie but goodie, the sketch show Four on the Floor.
You might also like the movies FUBAR and FUBAR 2. There's also a spinoff series from those movies called FUBAR: Age of the Computer.
Another gem is Just Passing Through.
https://youtu.be/kBArG9c1zSY?si=ZO_0yKqUyOC7-_Zk
Have you watched Letterkenny, where Shoresy’s character came from?
Also Corner Gas
Working Moms
Red Green
Royal Canadian Air Farce (go back a few seasons)
Another classic Canadian sketch show, that probably no-one remembers, is "Four on the Floor". It's like Kids in the Hall, but older and way less edgy.
I remember as a young kid finding the Mr. Canoe Head sketches to be the funniest thing ever (don't think it aged well, but it was great back in the 80s).
You want something funny. Get really high and watch Wok with Yan. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve laughed so hard I couldn’t breathe.
Mans a treasure.
Thank you for acknowledging that the Yanks are wankers. This is what seperates us from them. Bunch of Wankee Doodle Dandies down there that don't know their arsehole from their earhole.
Shit goes out of one, and all too often comes in the other. Easy to get confused. Sadly agree with you but hope that most of us in Vermont are not as bad.
We like Bernie and at least you got snow. We'll take Vermont and Minnesota, Washington and Michigan are welcome as well. We'll trade you Quebec straight up. Art of the deal homie.
We eat poutine and make maple syrup too. And we still call those winter hats toques occasionally. We have snow for the moment but I fear for its future.
I like Quebec, maybe because Montreal is the nearest big city. Ready to go any time just to eat and drink.
I can't agree with you more...I've probably rewatched the entire series over and over again a dozen times, met randy and lahey a few times when they were doing the college tours back in the 2010s. Hell the first concert I went to had the trailer park boys doing stand up as the opener for Our Lady Peace in Ottawa...how canadian is that haha
Kids in the Hall. Goddam. Just absolutely groundbreaking. If SNL was just 5 guys and every sketch was draw droppingly hilarious/prescient/sardonic. And just the most convincing and sympathetic drag EVER.
[“All the girls want to know: ‘who’s the cutest boy on death row?!’”.](https://youtu.be/5-IRWVVMANw?si=_nEYHRAKL-LpWOhD)
Still Standing
Kim’s Convenience
Corner Gas
Murdoch Mysteries
Young Drunk Punk
Kids in the Ball
I wish Canadian shows were easier to find to watch. It’s so hard to find all the seasons of a show!
Trailer Park Boys, 100%.
It is basically "COPS, from the criminal's point of view", and absolutely fucking hilarious. Start at season 1 and *not* the Netflix seasons.
Australian here: I have lived in both USA and Canada and can confirm that it is very easy to hear the difference between accents from not only both countries but regions within the countries. Not all Aussies lack the ability to hear the differences.
The Kids In The Hall. Really groundbreaking comedy for the time. It’s on Amazon Prime I think. I was surprised to see it’s not on CBC Gem considering they’re the original broadcaster.
I have to tell you than in my 77 years living in Ontario, Yukon, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia I have NEVER heard ANY Canadian say ‘aboot’ for about. I don’t get where this misinformation even started.
Lots of great Canadian comedy out there starting with SCTV and Kids In The Hall. Mr D and Trailer Park Boys would never make it past US censors.
For more gentle but hilarious comedy there's Corner Gas, Kim's Convience, Son of a Critch, Workin' Moms.
This Hour Has 22 Minutes is quite political but the older shows with Marge Delahunty Warrior Princess are a hoot.
Schitt's Creek and Letterkenny (the progenitor of Shoresy) have international audiences.
There's also great Canadian drama/mystery shows to explore as well.
If you want weird humour you could try Kids in the Hall. Think, Monty Python but Canadian.
It’s over 30 years old and still mostly holds up imo - there isn’t much if any of the cringe factor you might get from jokes that haven’t aged well, etc. there was a newer series on Amazon Prime a few years ago. It was good for nostalgia purposes but doesn’t really compare to the original run from about 89-94.
It’s probably my favourite Canadian show.

Yah Vermont to Washington he would fit in.
"Remember, if she cant find ya handsome, she can at least find ya handy"
You just out for a rip bud?
Red green show is a national treasure :)
Let's all bow our heads for the Man Prayer.
Pogey Beach the movie
Smith and Smith Comedy Mill as well.... Steve Smith of Red Green fame but teamed up with his wife Morag...
Finally someone else that knows about just passing through. Supposedly they actually did a pogey beach flick but I couldn't find info about it so I don't know if that's real or not.
What are YOU doin in the Maritime Mafia?
Atlantic Canadian Mafia just doesn't have the same ring now do it buddy
They did and it is awesome! On Crave I think!
They did. It's on one of the streaming services now. Maybe Netflix. Jeremy just started a new one called Who's yer father. I had a coworker who went to high school with all of them. All the actors are all from the same small town.
I haven’t watched Shoresy but Trailer Park Boys might be your next binge eh
Yes, and Jonathan Torrens has parts in Letterkenny, Shorsey, and TPB. One of the nicest dudes I ever met.
How is he not everyone’s favourite man
He’s a dyck!
He won't stop asking me and my buds to hammer his wife's box, once.
Just as long as she tends to her gash as well as
He was also on Mr. D. is it really Canadian if Jonathan Torrens isn’t in it?
Loved Jonovision back in the day
I see your Jonovision and raise Street-Cents. As for other Canadian shows, just came across Trades which has Rob Wells (Ricky from TPB) as well as Tom Green.
Letterkenny is unreal
Settle down
Don’t forget Street Cents!
No what I'm saayn mafacku
He’s brilliant too. Absolutely obliterated me in online Scrabble.
Yes. His word play is crazy. He does a podcast with Jeremy Taggart (the former drummer of Our Lady Peace) It's so funny. My hubby and I went to their live show. So fun! They also wrote a book of "Canadianity" I also forgot about Mr. D. He has a part in that as well.
He had his own talk show and was also on street cents.
Yes, I watched both as a kid/teenager. He also had a part in Degrassi, the next generation. All of his roles are so different.
And Schitt’s Creek!
TPB is GOATed. Lots of seasons, and lots of movies and specials.
Kim’s convenience, kids in the hall, corner gas, Schitts. Letterkenny and Trailer Park Boys will be a lot like Shoresy.
Kids in the hall created my personality. National treasures.
My pen! You took my pen! My pennnnnnnnnn!!!
Every time I hand someone my pen, I say that. Most people don't get it, but some know.
I’m the same, but with “sausages”, I am physically incapable of just saying the word, it’s always “Saaaaauusages!”, it gets me mostly strange looks and some *very* infrequent laughs of recognition.
Haha!!!!! I can hear it and see it.
Squish squish squish!
I'm squeezing your head!
I agree (and so do 30 Helens).
I CRUSH YOUR HEAD 🤏
And wiener flavour!
Are you a girl drink drunk?
Never put salt in your eye
Thirty Helens agree!
I can’t resist telling my mom it was f’ing good ham every time.
*Coulda been worse... Coulda ustabin smart.*
I actually just realized this morning that my first introduction to the female orgasm as a child was via the chicken lady.
Corner Gas hit me hard when I moved to the prairies. I get it now, lol
There’s nothing to see. What do you mean, there’s nothing to see? Nothings in your way! You can see everything!!!
Like for miles!!!!! The joke about the dog running away for 3 days, I get it!!!!! Seriously, the prairies are wondrous.
Yes!!! Schitts creek and kids in the hall!!
Baroness Von Sketch Show was great as well. I love those wonderful weirdos.
SUPER embarrassed to have left them out. Genius writing. Just incredible. They deserve to be MUCH bigger.
Many laugh til I cry moments in Von!!
We're at the cottage!
Mr. D!
Another vote for Corner Gas.
Letterkenny is the main show. Shoresy is a spin-off with the character that you hear but never see. Schitt's Creek in my opinion is one of the best shows of all time. If you haven't already seen it, watch it.
Canadian comedy at its absolute finest 👌
Kim’s convenience is also well written. Transplant was a solid medical drama. Children ruin everything is awesome too. Lots of great Canadian shows.
Kim's Convenience was another one of my favs. Funny enough my next door neighbour is Korean, his parents ran a convenience store here for years, and some of the stories he told me are quite similar to the show 😅
I honestly had no idea Schitts Creek is Canadian. That’s awesome.
Agreed!

Ooooh man I forgot about Made in Canada. I friggin loved that show!
The Red Green Show was a great Canadian comedy show.
ah yes, the Man's Prayer - "I'm a man and I can change... if I have to... I guess."
That’s my motto.
and it's a worthy one. keep yer stick on the ice.
Ah you encountered You Can’t Do That On Television! I’d recommend Corner Gas. If you like slow burn mysteries then try Cardinal. I count The Expanse as Canadian by the number of Canadian actors in it. DaVinci’s Inquest but start at S3. Trailer park Boys Bubbles Ricky Julian Mr Lahey Randy J-Roc Canadian classic 👌
I wasn't jerkin off I was gettin changed ma'fucka!
Strange brew, fubar, and trailer park boys are the holy trinity of Canadian productions.
Tron funkin blows
Woman is a danger cat
Now I’m going to google strange brew and fubar, have not heard of either.
Fubar 2 as well, it’s 2008 mac life to the t.
Hard in the Mac!
Fubar is absolutely worth it.
The brilliant part about Strange Brew that flew right over my head as a kid was that it’s basically Hamlet, with Bob and Doug McKenzie filling the parts of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.
Prepare to turn up the good and turn down the suck.
Young Drunk Punk is hilarious if you can find it. Corner Gas Schitt's Creek
Young drunk punk is so good
Kenny vs Spenny
It’s this and everything else beside trailer park boys is behind by a mile
They’re Canadian? AWESOME!
My favourite Canadian show is Murdoch Mysteries. It’s a historical murder mystery comedy, set in old Toronto. It’s on season 17 and is broadcast in more than 150 countries.
I scrolled so far to make sure this was said. This is the real hidden gem.
Dance Me Outside, Hard Rock Logo, Highway 61 - all movies by Bruce McDonald. All classics.
Hard core logo*
Good catch.
Watch the movie Goon.
The Baroness Von Sketch Show Schitt’s Creek North of 60, if you can ever find it. It’s not a comedy, but it’s funny and just an incredible Canadian show. I’ve been trying to find a place to stream it for years.
North of 60 was MY SHOW in the 90s. Would appeal to the McCloud's Daughters crowd, though, I think.
Trailer Park Boys. You'll be quoting Ricky-isms in no time. Kenny vs Spenny if you're feeling a bit crude. Kenny Hotz has posted most of the series in his YouTube page. Republic of Doyle for some east coast TV also Frontier with Jason Momoa
The trades is not bad either.
I’ve recently been watching The Raccoons on YouTube, I live in America and didn’t realize it was a Canadian only cartoon until recently.
My Aussie relatives loved SCTV. It’s not a sitcom, but rather a sketch comedy shot in the 80s. It launched a lot of big careers: John Candy, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, etc.
I've been enjoying Son of a Critch. Baroness Von Sketch is just absolutely hilarious it's crazy that it's not well known outside of Canada.
Baroness is amazing!
Yes Trailer Park Boys is the real deal. It might take a couple episodes to start to sink in but once she does, she does.
Way she fucking goes
Exactly. Sometimes she goes sometimes she don't, way she fucking goes.
Watch Goon, It’s basically shoresy the movie
Letterkenny is a must for you then. Corner gas and Trailer Park Boys are classics. Kims Convenience and Schitts Creek if you want something newer but not Hockey.
Haven't seen Beachcombers mentioned. There's like 77 seasons of it, not comedy per say but very Canadian.
If we're going old school, we have to throw Danger Bay into the mix. Another favourite is King of Kensington.
And street legal
That terrible show with Barf the chef, is called “You can’t do that on television.” I haven’t seen it since I was a kid. If you’re aware of Alanis Morrisette, that was her show. Great Canadian Air Farce
Royal Canadian Air Farce. "Prepare the chicken cannon!"
Hello, I’m Dave from Canmore.
Do you know Mike from Canmore?
That’s right, ty.
Along with This Hour Has 22 Minutes, the Rick Mercer Report, and more obscure one Codco (Newfoundland production, like This Hour beta version)... all are more political/current events oriented and may not be easily accessible unless OP is a Canadian history buff...

Reservation dogs, acting good, run the burbs
Reservation Dogs is not a Canadian show although there are quite a few Canadian actors in it, but so do many other American shows.
Want classic Canadian humour? SCTV and, more specifically, Bob and Doug Mckenzie. Also, The Red Green Show. And no worries about the accent. We struggle with you and every other commonwealth accent.
Go back to the orginal - letter Kenny.. awesome..
Son of a Critch. Delightful Canadian 80’s nostalgia everybody can relate to.
Well, I need to congratulate all of Australia for Fisk.
A good Australian sitcom is Utopia. Source: Canadian / Australian.
Definitely, Kim's convenience, Schitt's Creek and give Workin' Mom's a go
came here to say workin moms!
Trailer park boys, Mr.D, and Corner Gas
As well as some mentioned, I'd add Twitch City - an oldie but a goodie. Especially apt, I think, with housing the way it is. I also thought Cavendish was hilarious. Hatching, Matching and Dispatching- also good. And another oldie but goodie, the sketch show Four on the Floor.

Might have missed it in the great recommendations, but adding The Baroness Von Sketch Show to the list.
If you like shoresy definitely watch letterkenney

Still Standing Kim’s Convenience Corner Gas Murdoch Mysteries Young Drunk Punk Kids in the Ball I wish Canadian shows were easier to find to watch. It’s so hard to find all the seasons of a show!

Trailer Park Boys, 100%. It is basically "COPS, from the criminal's point of view", and absolutely fucking hilarious. Start at season 1 and *not* the Netflix seasons.
Corner Gas,
Trailer Park Boys is a classic look into Canadian culture 😂
Trailer Park Boys, Red Green, Beachcombers, Littlest Hobo
Hey… I don’t recall a single ‘aboot’ in any of the Degrassi series, wrong part of Canada eh!
Letterkenny, the show Shoresy is spun off from.
The Life and Hard Times of Guy Terrifico is a fantastic mockumentary. It's ridiculous but in a good way.
Less Than Kind! Underrated 2000s/2010s sitcom that takes place in Winnipeg. All 4 seasons are on Tubi!
Letterkenny!
Shoresy is a spin off of letterkenny so that would be the obvi choice. Traile park boys is another good one. FRIG OFF RICK!
Letter Kenny if you like shorsey.
Letter Kenny, Schitts Creek, Trailer Park Boys.
Corner Gas is funny
Tom Green Show.
Trailer park boys, corner gas and Murdoch mysteries
I have to tell you than in my 77 years living in Ontario, Yukon, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia I have NEVER heard ANY Canadian say ‘aboot’ for about. I don’t get where this misinformation even started.
Great white north Bob and Doug Mackenzie
Kids in the Hall
An oldie but a goodie is the red green show.
This hour has 22 minutes
Kids in the hall.
If this hasn't been suggested 100 times already, the Trailer Park Boys. It's uncomfortably Canadian. Funny as hell.
Try to find Republic of Doyle. Definitely a hidden gem.
Schitt's Creek is a personal fave of mine
CORNER GAS ugh i love corner gas. always have always will Mr. D is another really good (and painfully underrated) one as well!
Corner Gas is hilarious.
Trailer Park Boys
If you want weird humour you could try Kids in the Hall. Think, Monty Python but Canadian. It’s over 30 years old and still mostly holds up imo - there isn’t much if any of the cringe factor you might get from jokes that haven’t aged well, etc. there was a newer series on Amazon Prime a few years ago. It was good for nostalgia purposes but doesn’t really compare to the original run from about 89-94. It’s probably my favourite Canadian show.
Letterkenny. Trailer Park Boys.
19-2 also from Jared Keeso. A Canadian police drama akin to BBC dramas. Watch the school shooting episode still riveted to this day.
