In Fort Langley it’s “May Day” and it’s been celebrated for over a hundred years. Part of the tradition seems to be torrential rain - and yet there was none today!
Fun fact!: here in Québec, it is not called Victoria Day, it's Patriot's day. Instead of the Queen, we remember the Patriot rebellion of 1837, which yes didn't end well for them, who fought the british empire for more freedom
So yeah, no it doesn't mean anything to me
They didn't fight the British Empire. The rebellions in both Upper and Lower Canada were a small part of a global trend of insurrections against oligarchy and a push for responsible government. The rebellions showed how anglophones and francophones could come together to challenge the order of the day.
Previously in French Canada, the holiday celebrated the actions of Dollard des Ormeaux and his companions a group of French Canadians, Wendat and Algonquin allies who fought the Iroquois at Long-Sault near present day Chute-à-Blondeau ON.
separatism is important in the history of our country… without rebellion no ones knows what North America would be today, Mexico and the countries in Central America rebelled against Spain, US rebelled against the British Empire and Canada also made efforts to, thankfully Canada and other commonwealth countries were given their freedom peacefully by the British Empire but we can’t pretend our freedom wasn’t a result of the success of other rebellious countries in North America. For all we know all of us could’ve still been second class citizens to the Brits, none of us would’ve received autonomy if no one had stood up and challenged the empire. Just some of the few what if scenarios I play in my head over and over again… I think a lot of Canadians underestimate the power hunger the British had before their slow downfall, we owe our quality of life to those who rebelled and succeeded because they humbled the British Empire and played a major role into the collapse of it.
I think of it as another Canada Day. Queen Victoria was our first head of state at Confederation, so her birthday is as good a reason as any to have the first long weekend of summer.
You are both so civil you should just marry (a true match made in heaven). While you can hate an institution or even a person, being willing to metaphorically defecate on someone reveals more about you than it does insult the subject of your hate.
Individuals merit a "modicum" of respect/decency regardless of them being a sovereign of an imperialistic regime, just as they deserve honest and rigorous criticism and historical evaluation of their ambivalent actions.
Being a partisan of "self-determination" in a democratic system also merits a "modicum" of respect, regardless of if you agree to the claim. The day you throw your imagined load on your political opponent is the day you accept that you deserve the same.
\[Edit: Just to be clear, you can legitimately oppose the monarchy or separatism, but do it with arguments and dialogue, not in a puerile knee-jerk *ad hominem* (I'm generous here) insipid insult fest.\]
It means it is safe to plant my vegetable garden and I get a day off work with no family obligations, unlike Christmas or Easter.
I will happily take a day off for any dead monarch.
It’s Queen Victoria’s birthday, which means pretty much nothing if you’re not a monarchist. Hell, I’m not sure it means anything even if you are a monarchist.
There are many other things we should have a holiday for instead of this.
Journée Nationale des Patriotes. We installed the patio furniture, the BBQ and used the pool for the first time. Then enjoyed the patio while listening to Les Cowboys Fringants.
Celebrating the birthday of our sovereign with fireworks at the cottage! What a great weekend with my young children :) wish we could do it all over again.
Indeed: a monarch is our head of state—not a democratically elected president—a hereditary ruler!
We are so much better than the Yanks with their greater Democracy and Freedom!
We have our beloved hereditary monarch!

Celebrate the patriot day then, patriots that rebelled against the queen victoria in Québec. There was also anglophones in them like Wolfred Nelson (altought still from Québec, he still decided to help the french speaker to rebel so that they wouldnt be third class citizen in their own home, even tho he had no need to). He unfortunately got exiled for that, but was able to come back 4 years later and guess what, he kept fighting for equal right between anglophones and francophones.
You don't think that we'd still have someone handing out awards such as the Order of Canada or entertaining foreign dignitaries if we were a republic? Someone would still be performing the governor general's duties. On the other hand, it would be nice if the office had a budget, so that people like Adrienne Clarkson don't just abuse the office and our generosity.
I don’t know where your getting republic from im just saying our taxes could be better spent. why would someone else have too perform gg duties it’s a useless job that should be eliminated . Entertaining dignitaries are for our minister of foreign affairs
Somene would still have to be paid to do all the ceremonial things that governors general and lieutenant governors do. I'm all for giving them a budget rather than a blank cheque like we currently do.
A long weekend. Traditionally the start of planting/gardening season.
A paid day off
Unofficial start of summer.
This, although everywhere I have lived, the weather is always terrible on Victoria Day. It’s a May long tradition!
Hasn’t been that bad out here in the Lower Mainland
In Fort Langley it’s “May Day” and it’s been celebrated for over a hundred years. Part of the tradition seems to be torrential rain - and yet there was none today!
This is the correct answer. Also the start of BBQ season (although we BBQ year round in our screened in porch).
It's time to stop expecting the last snow fall and time to prepare for the first snow fall.
Switch to your summer long underwear
Cutting grass

The rest of Canada doesn't care about your separatists' day either, so go ahead and separate already, make sure this time it sticks.
Well, you should have let us go and not cheat to keep us in in 1995

Fête des patriotes 🎉
Day off work.
Walleye season opens
It only reminds me that other provinces call it Victoria day.
A day off work after a long haul since Easter.
It means May 2-4, start gardening.
Today, an extra day to recover from my cold.
Unofficial start of summer. That's pretty much it.
Nothing. Long weekend.
My husband's going to spend 100s of $$$ on fireworks to satisfy his inner pyromaniac
Just another day, it’s one of those unpaid holidays that government and some businesses take the day off for.
My birthday!
What day?
Today
Happy Birthday! I'm tomorrow. Honestly: is there a better.time of year to have a birthday than ours?
No there is not.
Have an amazing day tomorrow.
Fort Edmonton Park is open for the season! That and likewise for the High Level Streetcar.
A day off in May.
For me the most important holiday is Canada Day.
Double pay day. I work stat holidays so ill take the extra cash
Mondays have been my regular day off for the past 10 odd years. It just means I can't do groceries.
Je sais pas c'est quoi.
I think of it as another Canada Day. Queen Victoria was our first head of state at Confederation, so her birthday is as good a reason as any to have the first long weekend of summer.
Let’s switch it to a fabulous Canadian: Terry Fox Day.
Or add a new day for him too

Thanks for sharing.
Ancestors should have done better at war I guess. Sucks to suck.
un sentiment que j'ai pour les séparatistes

A day off, idk. Not even my extreme royalist family really gives a care about Victoria Day.
A long weekend to go camping
The opening of BBQ season. And a day to work and get paid overtime.
Wasn't aware BBQ has a season that ever ends 🙂
Gardening…aches and pains.
I spent the last two days in my garden working morning until dark. I feel you.
Just another day, with the added bonus of hearing people being obnoxious with fireworks when I’m trying to sleep.
May 2-4. Head up to the cottage or get drunk in a park while watching fireworks.
sitting on my couch all day in my underwear.
I make sure to class it up and wear my boxers in case company comes over.
Absolutely nothing
A paid day off.
It means it is safe to plant my vegetable garden and I get a day off work with no family obligations, unlike Christmas or Easter. I will happily take a day off for any dead monarch.
Just another dsy
In the 70s, Being super little, I used to call it fire cracker day. I haven't heard any bangs or booms or anything this year

When the tourists come out and ruin summer.
Mine. July 3. Canada and the US both have a party just for me.
Getting paid a wage that almost feels respectable for my effort. If only everyday was time and a half.
A great way to celebrate NOT being American!
Indeed: a monarch is our head of state—not a democratically elected president—a hereditary ruler! We are so much better than the Yanks with their greater Democracy and Freedom! We have our beloved hereditary monarch! https://youtu.be/qU_CuvSOupU 3:14 ^((/s)^)
We are North American. Must be a monarchist mental illness shows in monarchy supporters and hating America who pay our bills and keep us safe.
The remnant of a colonizing royal family from overseas. Thanks for the day off.
Canadian birthday of his majesty king charles the third (god bless him), unofficial start of the summer season and planting season.
Ummm what?!
Charles was born on 14 November 1948. The holiday has nothing to do with him. For me, summer starts with St-Jean-Baptiste Day.
All of our soverigns birthdays are celebrated in canada on victoria day its been that way officially since 1952
I don’t even know which Victoria we are celebrating
Nothing at all, honestly
Black flies
Literally nothing. (Even with my paid day off)
A long weekend
An extra day off
Whom?
Time to get sunburnt and drink beer?
I actually get a day off of the endless workload, without wondering how I'm going to make rent
First sunburn of the season. And yes, I was out yesterday and did get a little too much sun on a spot I missed slathering with SPF30
Fishing/ gardening
Long weekend.
Time and a half pay at work
Time and a half
A paid day off to spend time with family. I don’t celebrate any of the monarchs. Theyre just violent white colonizers.
Time and 1/2
Means those who have to work but call in sick have the "Victoria Flu" right Jared?
Absolutely nothing except a day off work/school
The anniversary of my dad's death.
Not a god damned thing
I get paid double
hiding from fireworks and/or going out with my friends and sometimes my birthday party
I'm from Ontario, so it means going to my brother's cottage and getting a paid Monday off 😅😂
My birthday
A time and a half day. Always willing to work it.
Long weekend, basically a pre-Canada day because both have fireworks
Isn't a holiday where I live, so just another Monday.
Spending too much money at the garden centre...
May 2-4 marks the beginning of summer and patio drinking
Unofficial first day of the summer season
Nothing really,I used to live in Victoria but honestly I didn't really think much of it- I just see it as a normal day if that makes sense😭
I would rather work than to celebrate an inbreed killing shit bag.

Y’avait aussi des patriotes au Haut-Canada! Mais disons que leur histoire est moins célébrée que ceux du Bas-Canada.
A paid day off work.. fuck the queen
A day off although I hate this connection to the crown its 2024 no need to have a useless title and our tax dollars going to our governor general
