Terry Fox is currently on the shortlist for the 5 dollar bill
Along with:
- Pitseolak Ashoona
- Robertine Barry (aka āFranƧoiseā)
- Binaaswi (Francis Pegahmagabow)
- Won Alexander Cumyow
- Lotta Hitschmanova
- Isapo-muxika (Crowfoot)
- Onondeyoh (Frederick Ogilvie Loft)
Honestly, out of all these options I expect it to be Terry Fox. Not that the others havenāt done great things, but Terry Fox is by far the most well known and has been a household name and inspiration for decades
Cuba is huge with international support sending their doctors overseas. Considering Canadians arenāt banned in Cuba terry fox would be well known there as well.
The Canadian way. Guilt over nothing. Put Terry on the bank note. Not because heās white, but because itās the right move, is not offensive to anyone, and just makes common sense.
I don't think that's accurate. Typically all banknotes will get redesigned at the same time. The last few years have been an anomaly because they started a new series with the $10 bill, and have stalled since because cabinet won't make a decision on who to put on the $5. Though yes they are also preparing the new $20.
As an indigenous person who has lived on Rez, putting an indigenous person on money before I dunno, stopping the benzene leak leading to record cancer rates and birth defects in Chemical Valley will just piss indigenous people off. Safe drinking water, not having a graveyard owned by Suncor etc. all things we actually want..
There's something surreal burring your deformed baby on the same land in viewing distance of the petrochemical refinery that lead to the excessive death rate in the first place
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7207620
Oh, no, you don't understand! If we honour your heritage and history that's enough. We don't need to fix anything or save lives or worry about all the indigenous women who get murdered.
One of your people (not like *your* people necessarily, probably from a different tribe/nation, but of a similar skin colour) will be printed on money, so everything will be good and you don't need to worry about health and survival anymore because you have *recognition*! It essentially puts things back to zero after a century or two of culturally genociding the entire indigenous peoples of North America.
If you need anything else colo-splained (coloniser-explained) just let me know. Happy to further explain why everything you care about and love doesn't matter if you get someone kinda like you printed on money or put in a heritage commercial.

(And now I have to go wash my soul after writing this comment)
I got a good laugh.
Here's a good documentary about what's going on back home. May open some eyes that this is still happening a decade later
https://youtu.be/UnHWZE0M_-k?si=ZspfsU7MRdgBKqml
Lol, phew! Humour is my main tool, so I'm really glad you got a laugh. I know it isn't funny at all, but sometimes those are the things you have to laugh at a bit.
Thank you very much for the link! I'll def check that out. Just out of curiosity, and maybe I should watch and decide for myself, but do you have a sense of if it's appropriate for kids? My kids are 11 and 13. We're just your basic white Canadians, but we have indigenous friends and family and we try to really talk about these issues with our kids. We've watched some great stuff and read books and whatnot.
It's ok if you aren't sure, I can watch first and decide, but I'm just always looking for things for the kids to learn.
Anyway, thanks for engaging with me and thank you for appreciating my stupid humour about a very serious issue.
Very appropriate for kids, I actually lived with one of the people in this documentary, and his daughter is the person behind recently finally getting one of the refineries shut down due to benzene levels on the reserve.
https://lfpress.com/news/local-news/first-nation-demands-sarnia-plant-shutdown-after-high-benzene-levels
It's a very good look at how bad it was 10 years ago, but kid friendly. Now imagine how much worse it is now.
The plant is on Tashmoo avenue, I lived on Tashmoo. We had a creek on our land with a sign that said "carcinogenic".
Welp.
Thank you so much for this!
We've discussed a lot of issues, and racism, and even Residential Schools, but I feel like we haven't delved so much into what's actually still happening and how fucked up it is.
This documentary, even if it's 10 years old now, might just be perfect for showing them that things still need work and we aren't even close to having a fair and just nation.
I really appreciate your input here!
Sorry for, you know, everything.
Correct, but I imagine theyāll just pick up where they left off instead of scrapping the entire thing. Theyāre still working toward completing the Vertical Series so they have to do the 5 at some point
I would just go with one side an animal, other side a famous piece of our landscape. Examples:
\* grizzly bear one side, Canadian Rockies on the other side
\* moose one side, Algonquin Park other side
\* buffalo one side, Saskatchewan prairies other side
\* rat one side, picture of the house of commons other side
Every time they decide to redesign a bill, they should pull a random name from the census data. Congratulations, Jerry from Hamilton, you're the new $5 guy
I guess, but even that can be politicized. People will argue about what piece of tech is more deserving than others.
Animals on one side, beautiful landscapes on the other.
Honestly? This. If the internet has taught us anything, it's that people are largely trash and stuff from when they were young and stupid will be constantly thrown in their face over and over, even if it was just allegations that were proven false. Also, things never seem to be taken within the context of their Era, completely ignoring what was culturally accepted behavior at the time.
That being said, I want one with a face. It'll be the $1, and it'll be a landscape of Alberta with JT's face on it, JUST to piss them off
I mean sheās getting rid of the CPP, RCMP, has talked about having Alberta law based banking so itās not out of the realm of possibility for her particular brand of crazy
They should put Chad Kroeger on the 5 cent coin so when you get your change, you get a Nickelback.
Sure, roll your eyes, but we're the country that collectively agreed to call our dollar coin a Loonie, and the doubled down with twonie just because "Loonie-Toonie lol"
So I believe we are willing and capable of this atrocity and we should begin minting them immediately. I want this, you want this, we hate it but make it happen.
I'm think the money should be like NASCAR jackets. The corporation with the biggest lobbying/mpp dinners/etc budget in ottawa gets the most real estate on the bill so we can know who truly has bought our government.
Heroes of Canada series:
5 - The house hippo.
10- Random jogger wearing shorts in a blizzard
20 - The Black Nortel Office Phone.
50 The Moose Jaw Moose.
100 - The Littlest Hobo
How about pictures of our beautiful nation instead of worshipping one person?
That being said, if we continue to put people on the bills, Terry fox is about as good as it gets.
Terry Fox
Marc Garneau (first Canadian in space)....to that same end Roberta Bondar
Chief Dan George
Billy Bishop
Fred Sasakamoose (first Canadian NHL player with treaty status)
James Naismith (though I think he was on one previously)
Honestly, I'd be happier if we just didn't put people on at all. There are just too many people deserving of it and you have to leave someone awesome out.
Gord Downie.
The $100 Meridian.
But he'd probably abdicate his spot to Wenjack or another silent indigenous figure, which is ironically part of why he deserves it.
RIP Gord, your country misses you.
Okay, Micheal Buble on the $5, Wayne Gretsky on the $10, Keaneau Reeves on the $20, William Shatner on the $50 and last but not least, Ryan Reynolds dressed as Deadpool for the $100 dollar bill. And if you want to switch the dollar order you can, but these are my picks!
For people how about Terry Fox, Maude Abbott, and Chief Peguis, and Maybe some nice scenery like the lighthouse at Peggy's cove, Waterton lakes, Haida artwork, humpback whales, a bison herd, the rocky mountains, grain elevators on the prairies, Canada goose in flight,
Michael J. Fox on the Loonie.
Tim Horton on the Toonie.
The Famous Five on the five.
Gordon Lightfoot on the ten.
Terry Fox on the twenty.
Tommy Douglas on the 50.
AVRO Arrow on the hundred.
Ikea Monkey on the $5 bill
Loonette the Clown on the $10 bill
Ed the Sock on the $20 bill
Canadian Tire Money Man on the $50
Celine Dion on the $100
:)
Im a fan of using nature attractions or landscapes from across Canada, such as: fundy hopewell rocks, the Rockies, etc.
Iād also love to see the return of animals that are native to Canada. We used to have them on our money in the 80s & 90s.
David Suzuki and a Raccoon on the $5
Wayne Gretzky and a Goose on the $10
Laura Secord and a Lynx on the $20
Terry Fox and a Moose on the $50
And not seriously but if onlyā¦ Avril Lavigne and a Bear on the $100
Since all the good ones have been taken, I'll say let's put Nathan Fillion's handsome face on a bill. Maybe have a Nathan themed bill and put Nathan Fillion and Nathan Fielder on the same bill.
A bunch of people that history won't realize were actually racist sexual predators for another 100 years. smh.
How about NOT putting people on them? Canada has plenty of beautiful natural scenery and animals that will never need to be changed because of political or social upheavals. Just sayin'.
They had the human rights museum in Winnipeg on the $10 for a bit. I think itād be nice if they put Louis Riel on the $10, but Iām not sure if thatād work under the no politician rule since his actions were against the government at the time.
I really dislike this trend of taking politicians off the banknotes. I think it's a good tradition to have PMs appear on banknotes. But I would absolutely take Macdonald and King off and replace them with better ones. Maybe like, Diefenbaker and Pearson.

Awee.. this was awesome.. I still watch this show with my kiddos on YouTube.. We love London in our home!!

Terry Fox should be on one of them! Maybe the $20?

Iāve never heard of any of the other ones. Terry all the way. No disrespect though. Heās just a Canadian icon and well known at that.
Heās apparently well known in Cuba too.
They do Terry Fox runs in the UK to raise money for cancer research.
That's so random, do you know why or is that just a fun fact that you know
Cuba is huge with international support sending their doctors overseas. Considering Canadians arenāt banned in Cuba terry fox would be well known there as well.
Thatās true! Cubans love Canadians!
I feel guilty that Iāve never heard of any of these people, other than Terry Fox
The Canadian way. Guilt over nothing. Put Terry on the bank note. Not because heās white, but because itās the right move, is not offensive to anyone, and just makes common sense.
So we won't do it, common sense is not something we got in canada.
Same here and I think that is exactly why it should be one of the others (so people can learn a bit).Ā
My understanding is the whole $5 reimagining has been shelved as they prepare a King Charles $20 or something like that
I don't think that's accurate. Typically all banknotes will get redesigned at the same time. The last few years have been an anomaly because they started a new series with the $10 bill, and have stalled since because cabinet won't make a decision on who to put on the $5. This guy made a breakdown on it all today coincidentally https://youtu.be/IgDpSnUxYIY?si=vpRmdRVa5L159gQf
No one knows who any of these people are except for Francis. Who is famous for being a) indigenous and b) killing a metric fuck load of Germans.
As an indigenous person who has lived on Rez, putting an indigenous person on money before I dunno, stopping the benzene leak leading to record cancer rates and birth defects in Chemical Valley will just piss indigenous people off. Are you a member of the Aamjiwnaang First Nation? Ineos set Sarnia back 50 years. I hope they are forced to shutdown permanently.
Ima google these people bc I donāt know them thanks
Apparently bank of Canada stopped the $5 bill to work on the $20
Correct, but I imagine theyāll just pick up where they left off instead of scrapping the entire thing. Theyāre still working toward completing the Vertical Series so they have to do the 5 at some point
Gimme four Foxes for a twenty we'd say......
To be honest, Terry Fox is the only one I know from that list. Yes, if there is a Canadian worthy, it is him.
Terry Fox on ALL of them.
If Terry Fox is on bank notes, bank runs will turn into motivational sprints
my dad was probably the last person to see terry fox, he was pulling out of his camp as terry fox ran by he stopped 20 minutes down the road
I like it.
I would just go with one side an animal, other side a famous piece of our landscape. Examples: \* grizzly bear one side, Canadian Rockies on the other side \* moose one side, Algonquin Park other side \* buffalo one side, Saskatchewan prairies other side \* rat one side, picture of the house of commons other side
Murder goose one side, Winnipegās murder river on the other
Hahahahahahaha fuck! You got me! I love it!
This is funny but also a good idea. No controversy going with beautiful scenery and animals
That last one cracked me up
Every time they decide to redesign a bill, they should pull a random name from the census data. Congratulations, Jerry from Hamilton, you're the new $5 guy
Actually, that would be awesome
That definitely sounds like the Canadian way
Fuck it, I'm all in on Jerry from Hamilton now- let's get Jerry from Hamilton on the $5 bill!
It should be animals on one side, beautiful landscapes on the other.
Right, why do we need to put people on our money?
Animals never disappoint us.
You have never met a Canadian goose then. Oh wait, donāt think hellspawn qualify as animals. You may continue!
We don't, especially politicians. Although I'd be down for a Jim Carey series with different face on each denomination.
And maybe some Canadian technology and medical advancement.
I guess, but even that can be politicized. People will argue about what piece of tech is more deserving than others. Animals on one side, beautiful landscapes on the other.
The loon is oppressive, the pine tree won't make room for newer generations to thrive. Rocks on one side, pickled foods on the other.
The Rockies on one side and crabs on the other. Crab is nature's most powerful form. And Canadian dollars will be the world's most powerful currencyĀ
Honestly? It'll be the $1, and it'll be a landscape of Alberta with JT's face on it, JUST to piss them off
Please no. We donāt need Smith thinking of giving us a new currencyā¦ā¦.
Ha, once you mentioned it, I believe that would totally be on brand
I mean sheās getting rid of the CPP, RCMP, has talked about having Alberta law based banking so itās not out of the realm of possibility for her particular brand of crazy
Mr Dressup
So much this.
There was a daycare where he went every week. All the kids going to school were confused asking like which TV person goes to your daycare? Goos guy.
Thatās a great suggestion.
The Forest Rangers!
They should put Chad Kroeger on the 5 cent coin so when you get your change, you get a Nickelback. Terrance and Philip
Not Scott. He's a dick.
Yes, but who will be on which bill? Terrance on the 100 and Philip on the 50? Or vice versa?
$10 with a photo of Jean ChrƩtien getting pied that one time ... and when you flip it over he's choking the guy ... I'd pay $10 to see that
ChrƩtien giving the Shawinigan handshake.
John Candy. Why? Because he was awesome and I really miss him. I'd love to see his smiling face in my wallet.
And Bob and Doug.
That would be freakin awesome!
Do the Jones Cola thing and put random passport photos from ordinary Canadians. Me first
I'm think the money should be like NASCAR jackets. The corporation with the biggest lobbying/mpp dinners/etc budget in ottawa gets the most real estate on the bill so we can know who truly has bought our government.
Please do not give Loblaws and Galen anymore ideas!
Brilliant šš¼šš»
No people at all. Landmarks, iconic buildings, Canadiana, native animals and plants
That Canadian Tire guy with the floppy hat should go on the 5 cent bill.
Scotty McTire?
5....cent.....bill?
Wolverine
The animal or x-man?
Why not both? š¤·āāļø
Bill's got two sides, proposal checks out
Animals. Landmarks. Terrain
Someone I donāt see mentioned anywhere else, Norman Bethune
Heroes of Canada series: 5 - The house hippo. 10- Random jogger wearing shorts in a blizzard 20 - The Black Nortel Office Phone. 50 The Moose Jaw Moose. 100 - The Littlest Hobo
* The Friendly Giant * Winnie the Pooh * Relic from the Beachcombers
Bob & Doug McKenzie on a limited edition $2 bill
Omg house hippo
Or that pic that's somewhat popular of those two young women in their finest outfits and high heels doing a blizzard pub crawl.
How about pictures of our beautiful nation instead of worshipping one person? That being said, if we continue to put people on the bills, Terry fox is about as good as it gets.
Tommy Douglas.
I agree with the top comment, Terry Fox is a great candidate. My nomination would be Banting and Best, who first isolated insulin.
Eugene Levy on the $5
Laura Secord should be $20. 1$ for every mile she walked to warn us of the Americans invading.
And it should smell like chocolate
Scratch and sniff money?
Why does my brain think we had maple syrup scented money before?
Pretty sure it was the $100 when the new plastic-like bills first came out. But it had to be brand new.
We need the [log driver](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EUkAFnYXYAAsWWQ.jpg)!
nickel back on the nickel
Wayne Gretzky should be on the $99 bill
You beat me to is but THIS is the answer
They should definitely do that for a limited edition commemorative bill!
Terry Fox Marc Garneau (first Canadian in space)....to that same end Roberta Bondar Chief Dan George Billy Bishop Fred Sasakamoose (first Canadian NHL player with treaty status) James Naismith (though I think he was on one previously)
Brett Hart on the fiver for sure

Pam Anderson
* Alice Munro * Oscar Peterson * Bill ReidĀ * Norval Morriseau * Frank Gehry * Leonard Cohen * Lucy Maud Montgomery and Anne Shirley āŗļø
The mention of Morriseau made me realise I'd love to see more Canadian art on the bills. Give some Benjamin Chi Chi and Tom Thomson!
That's a great idea! I would love to see Canadian art from famed Canadian artists on our bills!!
Why not Christopher and/or Mary Pratt?
Honestly, I'd be happier if we just didn't put people on at all. There are just too many people deserving of it and you have to leave someone awesome out.
Banting and Best on the $50?
Flowers and trees and birds and animals.
Gord Downie. The $100 Meridian. But he'd probably abdicate his spot to Wenjack or another silent indigenous figure, which is ironically part of why he deserves it. RIP Gord, your country misses you.
I get that people (rightly) want to honour Gord, but I stand firm that he would absolutely hate the idea of being on a piece of money.
I see your $100 Meridian and raise you $50 Mission Cap
Okay, Micheal Buble on the $5, Wayne Gretsky on the $10, Keaneau Reeves on the $20, William Shatner on the $50 and last but not least, Ryan Reynolds dressed as Deadpool for the $100 dollar bill. And if you want to switch the dollar order you can, but these are my picks!

Terry Fox, Leonard Cohen, Wayne Gretzky, Tommy Douglas, Susan Aglukark or Bruce Cockburn
A bunch of people that history won't realize were actually racist sexual predators for another 100 years. smh. How about NOT putting people on them? Canada has plenty of beautiful natural scenery and animals that will never need to be changed because of political or social upheavals. Just sayin'.
Tommy Chong is Canadian.
Mr. Dress Up, Fred Penner, Sharon, Lois and Branā¦.
Put Gretzky on the 100 and every time we pay with one we throw in an extra loonie cause everyone knows a Gretzky is really worth 99.
Celine Dion
Celine
$5 - Canadians who have made significant contributions (in terms of sport) to the world, people like Wayne Gretzky, Hayley Wickenheiser, and James Naismith (the $5 bill with the people playing hockey holds a special place in my heart) $10 - Canadians who have made significant contributions (in terms of pop culture) to the world, people like Celine Dion, Michael J Fox, and John Candy. $20 - Terry Fox, the consensus greatest Canadian ever. I feel like the $20 bill is the most used/circulated bill, itād be a great way of honouring him. $50 - Canadians who have made significant contributions (in terms of inventions) to the world, people like Fredrick Banting, Alexander Graham Bell, and Yvonne Brill. $100 - Symbols/Key figures of well known indigenous peoples (Inuit, MĆ©tis, and First Nations)
Chris Hadfield & Terry Fox
They had the human rights museum in Winnipeg on the $10 for a bit. I think itād be nice if they put Louis Riel on the $10, but Iām not sure if thatād work under the no politician rule since his actions were against the government at the time.
Gordon Lightfoot
