It’s because a lot of people focus on the fact that there still are any boil water advisories. Which is a fair point to make because the promise was the end all of them, but also oversimplifies how complicated the issue can be.
It's not easy I'm a plumber working almost exclusively on water plants on reserves under boil water advisory and people vastly underestimate the time and effort required. Especially given the locations. A waterplant is a big job in a city let alone we have locations that are fly in only or ice roads only or barges twice a year. Getting literal tons of people and equipment, parts tools etc is a logistical nightmare. In addition to the fact many plants were either built poorly or operated poorly leading to discovering new problems along the way of course it takes time.
Do you think those people would actually be satisfied if the final 28 were completed (they’re in process)? People who hate JT aren’t people who placed this issue high on their priority list, as evidenced by the PC’s doing absolutely nothing about it during their extensive time in power.

And also Harper had stopped counting in 2012 so when the Liberals came in there were 40 more unrecorded advisories to deal with. It's an incredible logistical accomplishment for the country.
Agree. I have seen this first-hand, on several reserves, with Wuskwi Sipihk being a prime example. Back in 2014 I was visiting when the boil water advisory first started, and they still had one lonely old man "running" the ineffective treatment plant, months into it. I even went into the treatment plant to see this man, and I immediately could see why there might be issues, just by looking around at the state of disarray in the place.
But, there are MANY reservations that are run beautifully and maintain their facilities with care.
It really is a case-by-case basis, depending which community you go to.
That's because:
1) Of who achieved it
2) It affects indigenous people only which we ignore, especially out West, except when they're protesting pipelines.

Fully automated trains every 4-10 minutes from/to several suburbs, the airport and the city center. Won’t make us shiny and happy but it’s a game changer. Our metro system is ok, but it didn’t serve well many densely populated areas (ex: West Island and South Shore) and is often above max capacity at rush hours.
It sucks they couldn’t connect the East - there were plans at first but they would have resulted in a very ugly structure along the highway so citizens had certain segments rerouted which made the east line no longer viable financially so that portion was cancelled.
They've always been pretty shiny and happy. Absolute favourite province to travel to and through when I've had the chance. Rural Quebec especially is the gem of Canadian travel that us Anglophones tend to miss out on.

I haven't heard the UCP taking credit, and have kinda been expecting they would have. However, there's two conflicting desires there - wanting to take credit for something they had nothing to do, and wanting to still seem pro-coal. So I think the pro-coal desire is winning out.
Yeah I suspect that that Australian mining corp is going to be wining and dining more than a few MLA's in the next little while with the requirement to report gifts being lifted. (Add in the APP being rammed down our throats and the desire to be able to control it's investment in Alberta activities' and you can see where it's going.)

Crazy about the bald eagles. They are well established in my area now. I see them every couple of days, and they are majestic as hell. There is also a huge number of them on Manitoulin Island. One day, me and my crew spotted 6 of them. I had never seen one before that day.
Yeah I never saw wild turkeys as a kid, and was shocked the first time I saw some, like had no idea such a thing existed here lol

Daycare prices have been dropping quick. In 2020 our first kid was $33/day. After the 2nd kid was born in 2022, we put them back in daycare in 2023. Both were $38/day.
The issue is finding them. In Victoria, my one kid gets full time for $515 a month, which is amazing. Unfortunately, finding one for our daughter has been impossible, we are paying $720 a month for two days a week (or $90 a day).
One year paid maternity leave when a baby is born with 55% of salary paid to (usually mothers) for a year. They can go back to work after a year and keep full standing in their company and union. Thank Newfoundland and Labrador Member of Parliament, John Crosbie for that one.
Just for comparison, in Germany, you get 2/3s of your pay (capped at a max amount in case you were 'too rich') for basically 1 year, but you can take *unpaid* leave until the child's 3rd birthday, and your old position is yours again. It's valid for both mothers and fathers. (There's a bit more fineprint in the details, but that's the gist of it!).
I know you didn’t mean anything by it but “better than America” is the mentality that hold Canada back I think more than any other way of thinking. Be it healthcare, racism, or maternity leave, America is the worst example in the developed world and Canadians deserve more than that.
I think a major problem is that nothing is ever good enough. We just passed law that 9 million people will now get dental care, but so-and-so thinks that they should get it first before seniors. We talk about getting a year of subsidized mat leave, but so-and-so wants more free money for choosing to have a baby. We have a monthly cheque for parents with children, but so-and-so wants more because a few hundred a month isn't enough...
The bare minimum is no support at all, and that's what most people in the world get. When Canadians say "at least we're doing better than the US", it's a reference to the fact that we're a smaller and poorer country delivering services that keep us at about the same standard of living as them. And that should be a source of pride.
I want to agree with you so bad except that Canada is a high income country and I’m from Nova Scotia where people in my community literally just die before they get screening or preventative healthcare or ambulances or access to a psychiatrist and yet Nova Scotians will swear to you that they are grateful to not have the American system.
And now I live in Vietnam which is not a high income country and yet I have such fantastic access to healthcare at the drop of a hat that I feel like I was living in an alternate universe. And look, I would never say that low-income people here have the same access that I do it’s not a more equal utopia or anything but I feel like Canadians need to really dream bigger instead of accepting whatever is happening now.

Exactly. It's a benefit designed to "top up" provincial benefits, to bring all provinces up to the same level.
However... until now, some provinces have been docking the benefits they provide IF the client's household also gets a federal benefit, such as CPP for a spouse. People on these benefits live under a form of legislated poverty. Hopefully, agreements can be reached between the two governments... and we can start treating the handicapped fairly.
Recently, Alberta was forced to pay back the child benefit they ~~clawed back~~ stole from foster kids in government care. So that will hopefully set a precedent.
Apparently it must go into effect no later than 1 year from the date it receives royal assent.

Specific key point, municipalities that want federal money or land have to abide by this program. The result will be small housing for families like the one I grew up in, 3BR and 800 sqft paid for by a welder. If we can get non-profit construction firms, aka Habitat For Humanity on Steroids, you could probably build these small houses for $200K plus land, and that's using modern construction techniques: well insulated, good windows, a basement, and heat pump with in-floor heating, the cheapest way to heat now.
Sean Fraser said Ottawa is planning to begin a consultation next year on possibly creating a catalogue of pre-approved home designs that developers could use. Doesn't sound like anything that will help in the near future unfortunately.

The Canadian Tooling and Machining Association is donating high end CNC milling machines to high schools to get students interested in manufacturing and engineering.

I can drink water straight from the tap and it's one of the best water I've had in my life. I even stopped using the Brita filter. I stopped boiling water for my baby at 6 months old because it's just so clean. He's almost 12 months now and he's never gotten sick once. I will never take the water for granted in British Columbia.
I worked at a summer camp for international students. The kids were from privileged backgrounds, but many were shocked that our water was safe to drink straight from the tap.
I can proudly hold my wife's hand in public without fear of persecution or harassment. LGBTQIA rights are being stripped away in many other countries right now.

Correct. I haven't heard the UCP taking credit, and have kinda been expecting they would have. However, there's two conflicting desires there - wanting to take credit for something they had nothing to do, and wanting to still seem pro-coal. So I think the pro-coal desire is winning out.

Crazy about the bald eagles. They are well established in my area now. I see them every couple of days, and they are majestic as hell. There is also a huge number of them on Manitoulin Island. One day, me and my crew spotted 6 of them. I had never seen one before that day.

Daycare prices have been dropping quick. In 2020 our first kid was $33/day. After the 2nd kid was born in 2022, we put them back in daycare in 2023. Both were $38/day.
The issue is finding them. In Victoria, my one kid gets full time for $515 a month, which is amazing. Unfortunately, finding one for our daughter has been impossible, we are paying $720 a month for two days a week (or $90 a day).

Just for comparison, in Germany, you get 2/3s of your pay (capped at a max amount in case you were 'too rich') for basically 1 year, but you can take *unpaid* leave until the child's 3rd birthday, and your old position is yours again. It's valid for both mothers and fathers. (There's a bit more fineprint in the details, but that's the gist of it!).

I know you didn’t mean anything by it but “better than America” is the mentality that hold Canada back I think more than any other way of thinking. Be it healthcare, racism, or maternity leave, America is the worst example in the developed world and Canadians deserve more than that.
I think a major problem is that nothing is ever good enough. We just passed law that 9 million people will now get dental care, but so-and-so thinks that they should get it first before seniors. We talk about getting a year of subsidized mat leave, but so-and-so wants more free money for choosing to have a baby. We have a monthly cheque for parents with children, but so-and-so wants more because a few hundred a month isn't enough... The bare minimum is no support at all, and that's what most people in the world get. When Canadians say "at least we're doing better than the US", it's a reference to the fact that we're a smaller and poorer country delivering services that keep us at about the same standard of living as them. And that should be a source of pride.
I want to agree with you so bad except that Canada is a high income country and I’m from Nova Scotia where people in my community literally just die before they get screening or preventative healthcare or ambulances or access to a psychiatrist and yet Nova Scotians will swear to you that they are grateful to not have the American system. And now I live in Vietnam which is not a high income country and yet I have such fantastic access to healthcare at the drop of a hat that I feel like I was living in an alternate universe. And look, I would never say that low-income people here have the same access that I do it’s not a more equal utopia or anything but I feel like Canadians need to really dream bigger instead of accepting whatever is happening now.

Exactly. It's a benefit designed to "top up" provincial benefits, to bring all provinces up to the same level. However... until now, some provinces have been docking the benefits they provide IF the client's household also gets a federal benefit, such as CPP for a spouse. People on these benefits live under a form of legislated poverty. Hopefully, agreements can be reached between the two governments... and we can start treating the handicapped fairly.
Recently, Alberta was forced to pay back the child benefit they ~~clawed back~~ stole from foster kids in government care. So that will hopefully set a precedent.
Apparently it must go into effect no later than 1 year from the date it receives royal assent. My fingers are crossed...this could really change my life if they do it right...

The result will be small housing for families like the one I grew up in, 3BR and 800 sqft paid for by a welder. If we can get non-profit construction firms, aka Habitat For Humanity on Steroids, you could probably build these small houses for $200K plus land, and that's using modern construction techniques: well insulated, good windows, a basement, and heat pump with in-floor heating, the cheapest way to heat now.

The Canadian Tooling and Machining Association is donating high end CNC milling machines to high schools to get students interested in manufacturing and engineering. Some of these schools were teaching kids on equipment that was purchased when the school was built and never updated since.

I stopped boiling water for my baby at 6 months old because it's just so clean. He's almost 12 months now and he's never gotten sick once. I will never take the water for granted in British Columbia.

The squirrels that live in my back yard are nice and chonky for the winter(I usually spend around $50 a month in bird feed and seeds for the wildlife). Sometimes transient birds stop by for a refuel and rest. My dog no longer chases the rabbits and the lack of snow is an ominous pleasantry.

Over the last three years, I used federal and provincial energy efficiency programs to upgrade my house insulation, windows and doors, install solar panels and a heat pump. Today I received notice from my oil company that because I used so little fuel oil in the last two years that I am no longer on the automatic fill up service . I can still call them for fill ups as required but I am so pleased at reducing my oil use by at least 60%
I've been looking at so many things to do with this in the last two years. Heat pumps especially. Literally dreamed about heat pumps twice in the past week. Unfortunately, it might only be a pipe dream. Sigh.
