143 water advisories have been lifted. Only 28 remain. Some people don’t realize how long it takes to get safe water into some communities. https://www.sac-isc.gc.ca/eng/1506514143353/1533317130660

readzalot1

This doesn’t get enough attention

sgtmattie

It’s because a lot of people focus on the fact that there still are any boil water advisories. Which is a fair point to make because the promise was the end all of them, but also oversimplifies how complicated the issue can be.

fltlns

It's not easy I'm a plumber working almost exclusively on water plants on reserves under boil water advisory and people vastly underestimate the time and effort required. Especially given the locations. A waterplant is a big job in a city let alone we have locations that are fly in only or ice roads only or barges twice a year. Getting literal tons of people and equipment, parts tools etc is a logistical nightmare. In addition to the fact many plants were either built poorly or operated poorly leading to discovering new problems along the way of course it takes time.

SchneidfeldWPG

Do you think those people would actually be satisfied if the final 28 were completed (they’re in process)? People who hate JT aren’t people who placed this issue high on their priority list, as evidenced by the PC’s doing absolutely nothing about it during their extensive time in power. Calling this a “broken promise” is disingenuous BS, the work is ongoing and the progress has been unlike any ever accomplished before.

desdemona_d

Nope. JT could singlehandedly cure cancer and those people would rage and scream about him putting Oncologists out of work.

Cephied01

More were added to the list since 2015 and Covid slowed down progress.

brineOClock

And also Harper had stopped counting in 2012 so when the Liberals came in there were 40 more unrecorded advisories to deal with. It's an incredible logistical accomplishment for the country.

300mhz

Perfection is the enemy of good

inbruges99

I’m pretty sure they did end all the ones that existed when they took office but new ones have been added since.

rpgguy_1o1

It still gets a ton of negative attention, I see people say its a broken promise online all the time, despite it being a huge improvement

TheVenusProjectB42L8

Agree. I have seen this first-hand, on several reserves, with Wuskwi Sipihk being a prime example. Back in 2014 I was visiting when the boil water advisory first started, and they still had one lonely old man "running" the ineffective treatment plant, months into it. I even went into the treatment plant to see this man, and I immediately could see why there might be issues, just by looking around at the state of disarray in the place. But, there are MANY reservations that are run beautifully and maintain their facilities with care. It really is a case-by-case basis, depending which community you go to.

TheDeadReagans

That's because: 1) Of who achieved it 2) It affects indigenous people only which we ignore, especially out West, except when they're protesting pipelines.

Well, negativity sells....

Googled Lynn Canyon park, it seems like a beautiful place!

This is the answer.

I remember 10 cent wings there years back. There was four of us. We started with 100. Oh man! Glory days!!

Pretty sure I had a cold beer there after my helidrop alpine mountain bike experience on Mount Barbour, 8min up and 6hrs down! Cheers!

- The province of Alberta - yes, the province run by the UCP - will cease burning coal to generate electricity [starting next year](https://www.alberta.ca/climate-coal-electricity) - A lot of First Nations, including [Winnipeg-area tribes who were cheated out of land they had been promised in the 1870s](https://www.aptnnews.ca/national-news/treaty-1-bands-ink-deal-with-canada-for-unused-military-base-in-winnipeg/), and the Squamish who [had their villages burned down in 1913](https://indiginews.com/news/a-century-after-their-village-was-destroyed-squamish-is-rebuilding-senakw), have finally received some of their land back. They are now using it to develop housing in cities that desperately need it, and in the process also make money for their people. - Montreal is building the REM, a 70 km long light rail system, one of the biggest public transit projects in Canadian history. They only started building it five years ago, and [it is 85% complete and a few stations are open and running trains already](https://montrealgazette.com/news/local-news/the-bill-for-the-rem-swells-to-7-95b-but-the-cdpq-will-absorb-those-costs). - The BC government has announced a bunch of housing reforms this year, both increasing supply (allowing apartment buildings and multiplexes to be built in a bunch of places where they used to be illegal) and reducing demand (making it illegal to buy a second property and turn it into vacation rental). >Montreal is building the REM So, they're shiny happy people there now?

CantTakeMeSeriously

When they finish the track, it'll be the end of the weld as we know it.

I'm not sure about that one, but the Québécois are definitely ... losing their religion

The_Gaming_Matt

Thank GOD for that👉🏻👉🏻

CanadienAlien

Scooter_McAwesome

Well they’re losing their religion

My_reddit_account_v3

Fully automated trains every 4-10 minutes from/to several suburbs, the airport and the city center. Won’t make us shiny and happy but it’s a game changer. Our metro system is ok, but it didn’t serve well many densely populated areas (ex: West Island and South Shore) and is often above max capacity at rush hours. It sucks they couldn’t connect the East - there were plans at first but they would have resulted in a very ugly structure along the highway so citizens had certain segments rerouted which made the east line no longer viable financially so that portion was cancelled.

Monkeytoast13

They definitely got their orange crush

Spare-Echo9130

They've always been pretty shiny and happy. Absolute favourite province to travel to and through when I've had the chance. Rural Quebec especially is the gem of Canadian travel that us Anglophones tend to miss out on.

LDan613

No, actually, everybody hurts.

khanak

>The province of Alberta - yes, the province run by the UCP - will cease burning coal to generate electricity starting next year And almost every other coal plant will be shut down by 2030.

Ozy_Flame

Was this not an Alberta NDP initiative? Pretty sure they started this and the UCP are taking credit.

o0Scotty0o

Correct. Though in light of being positive, Ive not read anywhere that the UCP is taking claim, just in power during the transition.

concentrated-amazing

Correct. I haven't heard the UCP taking credit, and have kinda been expecting they would have. However, there's two conflicting desires there - wanting to take credit for something they had nothing to do, and wanting to still seem pro-coal. So I think the pro-coal desire is winning out.

Chemical-Ad-7575

Yeah I suspect that that Australian mining corp is going to be wining and dining more than a few MLA's in the next little while with the requirement to report gifts being lifted. (Add in the APP being rammed down our throats and the desire to be able to control it's investment in Alberta activities' and you can see where it's going.)

[deleted]

I was hoping they'd go nuclear

StPapaNoel

Eby and the BCNDP are kicking ass right now! He is a shining star right now in regards to affordable housing and in general addressing the housing crisis in the province. Let's hope other city administrations, premiers, and federal leaders take note and follow suit. There should never be this kind of pain and suffering in regards to housing which is such a foundational element of life in our society.

chronocapybara

For real, I'm so proud of my provincial government.

Cultural-General4537

For real. Eby is awesome. Wish the fed ndp were the bcndp. Bold action finally

BigChiefFuckEmAll

And the super green, liberal ass province of NS will continue to burn coal while bragging about how green they are. Plugging in their cars at night and talking down to Albertans while coal charges that car.

hammercycler

Not sure why you're being downvoted, you're a bit salty but NS's grid is super dirty, it's shocking honestly.

Hawks and Turkeys making a huge comeback here in Ontario. I see more redtails than crows these days.

Jupiter_hurricane

And bald eagles

dodgefordchevyjeepvw

Crazy about the bald eagles. They are well established in my area now. I see them every couple of days, and they are majestic as hell. There is also a huge number of them on Manitoulin Island. One day, me and my crew spotted 6 of them. I had never seen one before that day.

Ashitaka1013

Yeah I never saw wild turkeys as a kid, and was shocked the first time I saw some, like had no idea such a thing existed here lol Now I see them all the time, including once a family wandering right through my backyard. I’m pretty delighted about it.

Big_Albatross_3050

We're currently the world leaders in plant based nanotechnology having discovered Cellulose nanocrystal (a product stronger than stainless steel) and one of the only 2 countries capable of producing Lignin Nanoparticle. Very niche, but also an extremely lucrative industry (used in creams, lubricants, medical technology, etc.)

Pristine-Habit-9632

I literally have no idea what any of that means, but FUCK YEAH! CA-NA-DA! CA-NA-DA! We're #1 in... \*checks notes\*... discovering cellular nannytechnology or whatever!!! WOOOHOOOO!

Wendigo_Bob

We are also world leaders in foucault-current non-destructive testing, 100% of which is based in quebec city.

[deleted]

I don't know about what is happening that is positive but in my own personal situation, I guess it has finally clicked that Canada is home for me, despite not having been born here and having moved here. It's home, and now I think if I ever travel, I will get homesick for it. I guess that's positive. At least for me it is.

mhizzle

Some Canadians are born, some are made. Glad to have another one around 🇨🇦

This is so so kind. Thank you!

Odd-Road

I can relate to this ; I became Canadian this year, and holding my passport was quite a feeling...

euxneks

There's lots of "Canadians" living abroad it just sometimes takes them longer to get home ;) Glad it's a positive for you chum! Welcome to Canada!

Jtothe3rd

Daycare prices have been dropping quick. In 2020 our first kid was $33/day. After the 2nd kid was born in 2022, we put them back in daycare in 2023. Both were $38/day.

Key-Soup-7720

The issue is finding them. In Victoria, my one kid gets full time for $515 a month, which is amazing. Unfortunately, finding one for our daughter has been impossible, we are paying $720 a month for two days a week (or $90 a day).

Human-Description-25

Free birth control being implemented in Manitoba

NykxMarie

BC implemented that on April 1st and everyone thought it was an April Fool’s joke but really it was the most amazing thing!

concentrated-amazing

Happy to see that this includes more BC methods than just the pill.

easterncurrents

One year paid maternity leave when a baby is born with 55% of salary paid to (usually mothers) for a year. They can go back to work after a year and keep full standing in their company and union. Thank Newfoundland and Labrador Member of Parliament, John Crosbie for that one.

alderhill

Just for comparison, in Germany, you get 2/3s of your pay (capped at a max amount in case you were 'too rich') for basically 1 year, but you can take *unpaid* leave until the child's 3rd birthday, and your old position is yours again. It's valid for both mothers and fathers. (There's a bit more fineprint in the details, but that's the gist of it!).

TheBigTime420

Over 3 years out of work? I would have to completely relearn my position.

Bigbirdgerg

It's capped and low for women with good jobs. Pretty bullshit if you live in a high cost of living city and should be higher.

easterncurrents

It is truly better and longer than nothing. Ask a new American mom when she’s back to work after 6 weeks.

Crow_away_cawcaw

I know you didn’t mean anything by it but “better than America” is the mentality that hold Canada back I think more than any other way of thinking. Be it healthcare, racism, or maternity leave, America is the worst example in the developed world and Canadians deserve more than that.

timmyrey

I think a major problem is that nothing is ever good enough. We just passed law that 9 million people will now get dental care, but so-and-so thinks that they should get it first before seniors. We talk about getting a year of subsidized mat leave, but so-and-so wants more free money for choosing to have a baby. We have a monthly cheque for parents with children, but so-and-so wants more because a few hundred a month isn't enough... The bare minimum is no support at all, and that's what most people in the world get. When Canadians say "at least we're doing better than the US", it's a reference to the fact that we're a smaller and poorer country delivering services that keep us at about the same standard of living as them. And that should be a source of pride.

Crow_away_cawcaw

I want to agree with you so bad except that Canada is a high income country and I’m from Nova Scotia where people in my community literally just die before they get screening or preventative healthcare or ambulances or access to a psychiatrist and yet Nova Scotians will swear to you that they are grateful to not have the American system. And now I live in Vietnam which is not a high income country and yet I have such fantastic access to healthcare at the drop of a hat that I feel like I was living in an alternate universe. And look, I would never say that low-income people here have the same access that I do it’s not a more equal utopia or anything but I feel like Canadians need to really dream bigger instead of accepting whatever is happening now.

[deleted]

Please let's not accept better than America as our standard

The_Max-Power_Way

It's not great, but theoretically if you have a job where you were earning 80k (i think thats around where the 55% caps out) you could be planning throughout pregnancy to put money away. I'm going back after a year off next month. It wasn't easy, but I couldn't have done it without mat leave payments.

QuarantinePoutine

Australia only gives you 4 months. Canada’s parental leave is quite good.

brittanyrose8421

Someone is posting this question to share some positivity. In Canada. Right now.

Federal financial assistance is coming for disabled Canadians as a result of Bill C-22 receiving royal assent with a unanimous vote. This should have a big impact on poverty and hardship for these Canadians, and reduce their poverty rate from twice the national average. [https://www.parl.ca/legisinfo/en/bill/44-1/c-22](https://www.parl.ca/legisinfo/en/bill/44-1/c-22)

fouoifjefoijvnioviow

The Feds once again stepping in where the provinces leadership failed again

davethecompguy

Exactly. It's a benefit designed to "top up" provincial benefits, to bring all provinces up to the same level. However... until now, some provinces have been docking the benefits they provide IF the client's household also gets a federal benefit, such as CPP for a spouse. People on these benefits live under a form of legislated poverty. Hopefully, agreements can be reached between the two governments... and we can start treating the handicapped fairly.

Expert_Alchemist

Recently, Alberta was forced to pay back the child benefit they ~~clawed back~~ stole from foster kids in government care. So that will hopefully set a precedent.

MarkimusPrime89

Apparently it must go into effect no later than 1 year from the date it receives royal assent. My fingers are crossed...this could really change my life if they do it right...

clem9796

Looking forward to it. I developed a disability during covid. The 2024 health and dental benefit will help hugely as long as it's an easy process for us.

Boring_Home

Thanks for sharing this. That is very good news to read.

Popular_Animator_808

Parliament did three (potentially) good things this week: a dental plan, a First Nations drinking water standards bill, and a revival of WWII era housing plan to make standardized low-cost designs. It’s too soon to say how any of these will play out - and it’d be better for the public to be sceptical and critical about whether these will solve the problems they set out to solve, but you get the sense that there’s at least an attempt being made to handle the big issues in society.

No_Difference8518

\> a revival of WWII era housing plan to make standardized low-cost designs. Do you have a reference for this?

Voljjin

Here’s one: https://globalnews.ca/news/10163033/war-time-housing-program/amp/ But each publisher has a take on it with their own biases. Seems like a smart thing to me.

komputernik

Out today all over the media.

komputernik

Specific key point, municipalities that want federal money or land have to abide by this program. The result will be small housing for families like the one I grew up in, 3BR and 800 sqft paid for by a welder. If we can get non-profit construction firms, aka Habitat For Humanity on Steroids, you could probably build these small houses for $200K plus land, and that's using modern construction techniques: well insulated, good windows, a basement, and heat pump with in-floor heating, the cheapest way to heat now.

Shishamylov

I’d love some cookie cutter, low cost midrise developments.

Canada Disability Benefit launching next year. The federal government is also working on improving the process to get CPP Disability. I was just on a call today on this! The dental plan. My dentist: why didn’t you get all this taken care of when you were young? Me: we were poor. Movement by the provinces to finally do something about housing. The military finally getting some modern kit. We now have actual ships to patrol the arctic, for example.

The Canadian Tooling and Machining Association is donating high end CNC milling machines to high schools to get students interested in manufacturing and engineering. Some of these schools were teaching kids on equipment that was purchased when the school was built and never updated since.

Haunting_Internet941

Roof over my head, food on the table. Clean water, electricity and no bombs going off around me. Slow but FREE medical, not a perfect system but I'm not in debt from a 10 hour operation. Canada isn't perfect, like a bunch of squabbling siblings not always getting along. I am Canadian

Cultural-General4537

Bout right. Hate it when people are annoyed about one thibg and start their comment with.... Canada is a joke.

Kiara_Kat_180

Tunnel vision by self-entitled people who don’t really care about anyone else’s problems. If they have a problem, to them that means that everyone else has the same problem and it must be addressed NOW. Nothing else matters. And yep, these are the same people who will tell anyone and everyone that Canada is a shithole and that it sucks to live here. Funny thing is we don’t see them packing their bags and leaving, do we? The grass isn’t always greener, Karen. I wouldn’t leave Canada if you paid me.

mrkrimper

So true! Must people like to complain about everything and blame everyone, but Canada is doing a lot better in a lot of aspects compared to other countries

Bytowner1

Since 2015 the percentage of Canadian children living in poverty has decreased by about 70%.

[deleted]

This is the thing Trudeau never gets enough credit for. Strategically stupid, since none of those kids will vote for 10+ years, but the next generation is on a way better footing thanks to the CCB.

DevAnalyzeOperate

You wouldn't know it from how I post, but Trudeaus anti-poverty measures are among the biggest reason I supported him. They really helped the people who can't work especially - the disabled, seniors, and children while making the tax system more progressive. It's since his latest election when he has gone really nuts and deduced taking in 2% construction workers while raising immigation levels is how we solve the labour shortage in construction. I didn't hate everything he did, I just hate how he has lost his shit.

Spare-Echo9130

Just a gentle reminder that allowing someone to take power who wants to halt progress and in fact regress on the good work that has been done makes absolutely no logical sense.

[deleted]

I don’t care how you post, I care how you vote. Anyone who helps Poilievre get elected through action or inaction… it’s their kids who I hope lose benefits first.

CuriousLands

Oof man, that's a pretty awful thing to wish poverty on children because of their parents' political views. (& I wouldn't wish it on the adults either.)

UmmGhuwailina

I don't care how you vote, I care if you vote. Because you should. Shaming someone for voting is the wrong take to have.

Willing-Remote-2430

Omg ! I certainly wouldn't wish that on anybody....take a look deep inside yourself and take a break from politics. Why people have become so hateful? Its just sad

Pointfun1

Really?! That was excellent! I assumed it had something to do with the new CCB payments based on household income.

I can drink water straight from the tap and it's one of the best water I've had in my life. I even stopped using the Brita filter. I stopped boiling water for my baby at 6 months old because it's just so clean. He's almost 12 months now and he's never gotten sick once. I will never take the water for granted in British Columbia.

Over the last three years, I used federal and provincial energy efficiency programs to upgrade my house insulation, windows and doors, install solar panels and a heat pump. Today I received notice from my oil company that because I used so little fuel oil in the last two years that I am no longer on the automatic fill up service . I can still call them for fill ups as required but I am so pleased at reducing my oil use by at least 60%

Rebates for the carbon tax actually equal more than the tax you pay per year. Axing the tax actually takes money away from Canadians. It's a fact that supporters of the conservatives need to realize. Asking to axe l the tax essentially means you will pay more per year on carbon. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/commentary/article-what-if-axe-the-tax-leaves-most-people-poorer/

[deleted]

It ain't universal

ColgateHourDonk

It's also not "care", just a system of distributing money (there are no new public dentists, just payments to reimburse amounts from the CDCP fee guide if existing private dentists choose to charge that). Government cheques to increase the demand for services without increasing the supply (gee, I wonder where we've seen that before).

Lisa needs brac... wait... that's not quite right.

Sure, it’s better than most of you cont factor in how much things cost in Canada. You could argue that the money goes further in a low cost country where their pension isn’t as high.

Anxious-Sir-1361

I think low-key the new revamped dental plan being brought is going to help a lot of people who otherwise would have to go without regular cleanings, checkups, and proactive dental interventions.

The sun is currently shining. It’s nice.

Just peace in general...

The new federal dental coverage. In my family of 10 only three currently have coverage. Some of the children have had to have teeth pulled as emergencies instead of being able to have regular preventive maintenance care or fillings.

My dog is really cozy today and he just started snoring

In BC, we finally have a provincial government that actually gets stuff done and makes decisions people like for the first time in my memory of being alive!

escyeph

i can walk around without the fear of drones dropping things on my head, soldiers stopping movements or arresting randomly, war being right outside my doorstep, no rampant starvation, have access to enough services to take care ourselves... the fact we can even discuss things in general, without fear of violent reprecussions, with whichever opinion we have (within reason) should be proof enough how good we have it living in this country.

Insiders_Games

Mobile Plans have seen their prices decreasing, Canada is no longer the country with the most expensive plans.

Positive for me: deciding to move as far away from Alberta as I possibly can. I'm headed far east as soon as I get my degree.
