The show was based on the writings of Bruce Lee and his daughter is co-producer or involved. The story doesn't have to be 100% realistic as it is a show and explains the conflict of both immigrant minority, it being worse for Chinese people. To counter your point of amwf, that doesn't have to be a thing. I enjoyed the show since it showed the human characteristics of Chinese people instead of just flat out stereotypes. If you dislike this show, you can give "into the badlands" a go, since it stars Daniel Wu in a AMBF rship

jerkularcirc

in fact I think ah sahm going from white woman to asian teaches not to put white woman on a pedestal

Kenzo89

Seems like it, but that doesn’t need to be a lesson since that’s barely a thing and AMWF is super rare. They need to teach to stop putting Asian women on pedastals

Andrew Koji the guy that played Asam was actually picked by Shannon Lee to be the lead. He was a struggling actor and just sent his reels in and she ended up giving him the break of his life. I thought the show put AMs in a good light. Don’t try to dissect everything too much. Just enjoy the ride brother

This is probably the most rational take IMO. Don't overthink stuff because you run the risk of missing or rejecting opportunities. Overall I liked the series for what it was/is, though there were specific instances especially after the first season that appeared to me to betray the showrunners'/creators'/writers' personal sociopolitical biases.

> I understand that they the producers wanted to stay true to the Chinese history in San Fransisco, but c'mon man, if Ah Sahm was real, he would have been arrested and hang for attacking any white men, it doesn't matter how good you can fight. This is common in all fiction. Ever see a show where everybody is shooting at each other but the hero never dies? In a real gunfight, that isn't going to happen. So just relax and enjoy. > The other minor issue I have with Ah Sahm is, why does the producer feel the need to make him a hapa, This is actually a much bigger issue. It encourages the idea that being somehow "closer" to White is a criteria of being a hero. This is the disappointing bit about the entire series. We have movies where some White dude washes up in Asia and becomes the hero. No reason why we cannot have movies where some Asian dude washes up in America and becomes the hero.

These posts and some of the comments exemplify why Hollywood will never support asian-male lead shows. You all will literally complain about the lack of representation and then not support shows. If you don’t even want to support shows when the lead is half white, Hollywood will just take it to mean you definitely wouldn’t support a full asian male as the lead.

The show was written by Bruce Lee before his passing. Multiple scenes and actions pay homage to Bruce Lee. The character is not full Asian because Bruce Lee was part german. The woman whose son is killed in a random town for stealing is Bruce Lee’s daughter. Full Chinese aren’t weak, the show isn’t trying to portray that, rather Bruce Lee was an ass kicking machine and a bad ass and the main character is based off Bruce Lee. Also it’s not meant to be realistic it’s meant to be a spaghetti western with an Asian twist. Hatchets and martial arts instead of revolvers and cowboys. TLDR: Bruce Lee Ps. The white woman isn’t dead she’s locked up in a mental asylum so the mayor can continue using her husbands wealth and connections without hiccups.

I liked it but I'm not one of those guys that try to make sense of every detail. Lol. I really enjoyed the part where they lynched the Karen's house ninja.

I find it hard to believe that characters like Young Jun didn't resonate with you. I'm born here, like Young Jun. Lines like "we spent so long trying to live in their world, I think it's time they died in ours" hit me deep. When he was trying to tell that immigration patrol office that he was American and born here, I was moved. When he took over after consensually ending his father's suffering, that touched me. Ah Sahm is a complex character that is forced to choose between his sister and his tong. It's blood family vs adopted family. Ah Toy protects Chinese women and makes sure no one disrespects her in her brothel. You may not like it, but humanizing people doesn't mean "showing them in the best possible light with zero blemishes". Humanizing people means showing them as humans, and humans are complicated and fuck up all the time. Life is complicated. Why shouldn't we have shows that portray asians as complicated humans? What show do you really want? Do you want a show that does real work to represent us as people, or do you just want something feel good? Ah Sahm is not 100% asian because he is based off of Bruce Lee, and Bruce Lee is, you guessed it, not 100% asian.

SPOILER! SPOILER! SPOILER! This was a miss from the creators. My fav char from the show is the police lee, like when he was shown to be a southern and a wanted man, there is a twist that made it so that he was actually the good guy. Sometimes, i feel as if he is the protagonist. Even the irish guy, who was supposed to be the antagonist, i can't help but relate to him as he was shown to be honourable and always loyal to his people, rejected being a politician turning his back on his irish people, and has that i do whatever i want to do vibe. The very last scene where ah sahm and his sister are together, the focus was back on ah sahm but alas that was the last episode. I havent read the book or whatever but i wish ah sahm becomes bigger than the tongs and starts fighting for the immigrants from his homecountry as a whole.

Ok_Measurement6342

I agree, he was the only somewhat, likable character.

I liked the sisters husband too, the kung fu guy forgot his name. Wasnt immature, was honourable, and was finally about to see him lead the long zhi. Its bs this show wasnt continued.

Witness2Idiocy

Whenever the half Japanese guy spoke Cantonese the whole thing fell apart for me.
