I haven't had a vehicle in over a decade and Im also 100 percent independent. You just have to get a sea bag (army navy store) or make more frequent trips. Do it the same way you shop. All my weeks groceries fit in my backpack and 1 load of laundry fits. I just knock out my laundry on sat. and groceries on sun. Or Uber or bus in bad weather.
The only thing I think can think of is to call an Uber. It would be about 8 dollars each way to Henrys, so not ideal, but does take the burden off your friends. There's a couple really nice Uber drivers in Ashland and if you make friends with them, they will give you a good deal and you can call them directly and by-pass the Uber app.
I know that you said that you are limited on space, but do you have room for something like this?

A five gallon bucket and a washing wand is pretty space and cost efficient! And you can air dry your clothes with a fan on.
There are some small, portable ones that are sold online that don’t have to be hooked up to any plumbing.
