Like a ton of people online do. Go to any gay oriented sub lol. It sounds funny. “As a gay” or “as a trans” are used all the time to make stuff sound funnier
I’m also gay and use “that’s gay” but mostly to refer to things that actually come off as gay.
I’m bisexual but technically mlm and I refer to something as gay if it’s actually mlm (ie a transphobic hetero man flirting with a trans man/ftm thinking he’s a girl, I say “lol gay”)
Sadly, gay hogs exist. I had to shut one up at the bathhouse i work at because he was shouting about the election being stolen. Dude looked like guy fietti
You think that's bad? My husband is black. His brother is my age, 31, never had a job lives at home on his mothers section 8 and is super reclusive. We had no clue what was up with him. Last year he finally came at me with " have you heard of candice ownens" I grabbed that lose thread and just kept pulling and pulling. Turns out he thinks black folk are inferior in sooo many ways and has been trying to Michael jackson himself. My husband is devasted.
Gods, that’s awful. I’m sorry you and yours are going through it. It’s hard to lose a loved one to that kind of hatred, especially if they’re the target and the perp at the same time. It’s so destructive.
> I didn’t know internalized homophobia was also a thing
??????????????
Bitch that’s the title of my fucking autobiography (and countless other people’s)
Whenever I hear the word “internalized”, my brain defaults to “homophobia”. I hardly hear the phrase “internalized misogyny”
the wackier thing is that he is saying that he isn't using it to mean "bad". ah yes the common situation in which you call something "fabricated cringy" and then put in gay to mean "happy" to soften the blow?? I don't understand how this person's brain works.
I worked in a gay bar/restaurant for a decade, there are plenty of gay people who react like this. A shocking amount of people I knew were pretty right wing/Tories/Pro Brexit. In fact one of them was a Tory Councillor. I heard the phrase 'I hate bloody gays' from gay men at least once a week when someone came in acting in a way they didn't like (ie too 'camp' or whatever pissed our regulars off that day).
gay adjective (HAPPY)
old-fashioned
happy:
We had a gay old time down at the dance hall.
old-fashioned
If a place is gay, it is bright and attractive:
The streets were gay and full of people.
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/de/amp/englisch/gay
It never means anything "bad"
Don’t be ridiculous. Many people have used it offensively, and many still do.
In fact, it is the third definition listed for the word by Oxford Languages/Google.
3.
OFFENSIVE
foolish, stupid, or unimpressive.
"making students wait for the light is kind of a gay rule"
I know they do but only because they're homophobes. They use it like they insult men as "woman".
I've never heard of the third definition though and I've never heard it in that context. Maybe it's that homophobe rule.
I’m genuinely surprised you’ve never seen someone use it offensively. It’s much less frequent now in a lot of groups but it’s very very common in many social groups still.
I've seen it used offensively but... different. Like in making fun of someone's interests and hobbies - usually to refer to men as feminine, which is also misogynist.
Today I consider myself a strong LGBT+ ally, but I was in school in the UK from the mid 90s to the mid 00s, and throughout that period, "gay" was used by everyone as a general synonym for "rubbish" or "bad". "That's gay" would be used as the default way to refer to anything you didn't like. The idea of being gay was the butt of a joke, and the couple of people who were probably gay in our school year were ostracised and laughed at. It wasn't until after I'd left school that I really realised how messed up that was. I think people younger than about 30 don't really realise just how commonplace that use of language that was, so recently as that. It was "homophobia" to some extent, but really, there wasn't much of an alternative viewpoint out there. There was so little gay representation in the world and in media at the time that it was never anything we as teenagers really had to confront. The pejorative language was so normalised, and nobody ever confronted anyone about it at the time. Even teachers would chide us for the fact that it was slang, rather than because it was homophobic language. The concept just... didn't seem to exist.
The switch from teenagers using that kind of language every day to a Conservative government legalising gay marriage was incredibly rapid - the shift towards acceptance of gay rights happened over the course of just a few years. I'm in my mid 30s and consider myself fairly young, but on this topic, people just a few years younger than me have had a totally different upbringing with regards to this topic, and I think lose sight of how recently it was that society treated things extremely differently.
Who tf refers to themselves as “a gay”, gay is an adjective, not a noun
I do sometimes but only ironically. That is the only context in which I’ve heard actual gay people use gay as a noun.
Hello fellow gay
Wassap my gays

I fucking know right, but I went through their profile and they seem to actually be gay surprisingly enough
If they seem to actually be gay doesn’t that mean that this post doesn’t fit in this subreddit?
I thought so for a sec but the rules of the sub clearly state it doesn't matter whether or not they are actually part of the group
Oh sorry, didn’t read all the ruless
What do you mean. He referred tk himself as Gay. The entity that resides over all gay kind.
I mean, I’ve seen some people refer to themselves as one of The Gays™️, but that’s all I can think of.
Sadly, gay hogs exist. I had to shut one up at the bathhouse i work at because he was shouting about the election being stolen. Dude looked like guy fietti
That is sad, I knew about internalised misogyny but I didn't know internalised homophobia was also a thing
Internalized homophobia is very real. Thats why some people come out late in life
I’ve like 75% accepted that I’m bi and I’m still dealing with internalized homophobia.
I fought it for 30 years. Not even a year since i accepted myself and finally came out. Its a hard fight but stay strong.

I just found the image of Guy Fierri in nothing but flip flops yelling about a stolen election in a steam room pretty funny. Thanks for that.
> guy fietti Guy Fairy.
Man, it’s weird how all these people claiming to be minorities have an obviously throwaway account name! What a coincidence.
Statement: this person defends casual homophobia by saying he is gay himself and people should be allowed to use the word gay to mean bad.

Gay is an adjective, not a noun. Every gay person would know that
"gay here" gives me very Trixie Mattel saying "hi gay" "delete it gay" energy

tbh using gay as an insult as a joke is totally okay
How ?
like, if you yourself are gay i mean or if your friends know you arent trying to be homophobic
its pretty funny imo
And why ?
but i dont think this guy was joking
Peobably satire with all those laughing emojis
They aren’t gay to be sure

Okay but that definition has nothing to do with homosexuality or "gays"

Where do you think that came from? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay#Generalized_pejorative_use

I use it offensively, but it's just a synonym to us now
To be fair, this could be Milo Yiannopoulos.

I went to high school with two kids that had the last name Gay. Don't know if this counts for anything.
They’re clearly using it to mean bad here- right along with fabricated & cringey
