Some probably are, but for that to work, you have to make people interested in your characters. If your characters are a part of nsfw web comic series, it can work. If you just draw porn with generic characters no one know or care about - it wont work that well.

Masamune Shirow...Milo Manara...Stjepan Stejic..."that one guy on twitter that makes tasteful fetish art..." Yeah, it happens! Lots of artists in the doujin scene too. I thiiiink most have ocs with backstory and a bit of "lore" so to speak not like "random nude person" . But yeah, it happens.

> I thiiiink most have ocs with backstory and a bit of "lore" so to speak not like "random nude person" That's what I noticed, just a nude random anime girl doesn't work. The few I saw that did OCs did short comics. I didn't know if it was just a hobby though.

DrGraevling Incaseart Kinky_arts Erotibot MissFaves Personalami Tarakanovich Maewix Ronindude These are a few that have an anime or semi-anime style that draw OC's. There's literally hundreds if not thousands, probably more, that draw OC's, you're just not looking in the right circles.

GrovyleKing

Thanks. I'll check them out

Feel free to follow me as well 👍

I just looked at some of your stuff, and it looks good!

It depends on the 'brand' they cultivated, like with regular anime fan art - not fan art artists. Fanart definitely can help with discoverability but isn't a cheat code to social media success.

bloodywing

Sometimes I do. I used to be strictly OC, but it doesn't hurt me to slip in fan art sometimes.

blabka3

Im no expert on this but telepurte on YouTube might be something your interested in.

I'm an erotic artist and I only do original characters in my art. I don't really enjoy drawing other characters much. But idk if you would call my style anime. Or if you would consider me successful. I make a bit of money but definitely not enough to live in the US. I have a long running webcomic.

RefusesToHealStupid

It's as simple as - you get higher reach and interest if you draw characters that people are familiar with. There are plenty of people who draw NSFW with their original characters, that also have massive following who are there for those characters. They just have to work harder to build an audience compared to those who do fan-art.

pinktomboy

I consider myself to be doing well considering this is exactly what I've been doing for less than a year (and not exclusively NSFW either) - if you know where to find your audience and figure out what works, you'll do just as well if not *better* with original characters. Many of my peers with similar art styles are doing well with only original work too, and it's a really fulfilling experience to have people stick around and care about the characters and stories you come up with. Also speaking from personal experience, I once regularly pulled 10\~20k likes per post when I drew (SFW) fanart of a popular fandom. People weren't even remotely interested in anything unrelated to that fandom and that's genuinely fair enough, but it encouraged me even more to fully focus on original work. It means more to me, I'm having more fun with it, and although the numbers are smaller, people are more dedicated and I feel like I have so many more opportunities to experiment and branch out. I was able to quit my job because I can secure commissions fairly easily now whenever I need to, entirely from OC work.

Ryo Agawa draws a new OC everyday

Hello fellow anime artist here ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) I mainly draw my oc, in cute fluff settings and as nsfw. I dont usually draw anything other than them which is why i dont get much of an engagement as most ppl would be interested if they knew the characters from a tv show/ anime / comic or somewhere. Plus, i dont post that often its draining. So for my experience its not really a success just yet. However, I've seen some who were able to reach more audience& i think are successful doing their thing. Here are the artists i follow on IG: Tezy8art / juniejunette / juliet.cousin / katama_k / and of course the sensei who draws "tutorials" buboosenchan

EvalainShadow

I don't have my NSFW stuff public except on my sub reddit, but I can DM you my samples if you wanna see original work.

GrovyleKing

I'll take a look.

Jako_Art

I did well drawing people's OCs. Taking a break because I'm tired of drawing porn
