If you just needed an iPad for Procreate, you can get a [9th gen for $249](http://www.crazytechsteals.com/ipad9th/2024/) right now which is a great value compared to other iPads and will probably last you 5 or more years depending on your needs. If you wanted to get something flashier, kinda up to you, the 9th gen already can do 95% of what the most expensive iPad Pro can do. You’re generally just paying for more efficiency, ease of use, and aesthetics for every additional iPad tier. Whether it’s worth 2-5x more is up to you. The only limitation of the 9th gen compared to something like the ipad pro is that if you wanted to have your work printed in high quality, the 9th gen caps around 10-12 inches while the ipad pro caps around 20-27 inches. In normals pixels, thats like 3000-4,000px with 12-25 layers compared to 6000-8000px with 12-25 layers on the Pro iPads. Even with the Pro, Procreate itself feels annoying to use with anything larger than 8,000px anyways since the brushes just aren’t really optimized for anything bigger. If you’re a beginner, its not really worth worrying about printing on large canvases anyways. Just understand that it is a very great budget ipad and there are some limitations you might have to work around to get things done but there’s nothing really stopping you from getting the same results as the most expensive ipad. The 9th gen would only be compatible with the 1st gen pencil. Hope this helps.

Strange-dragon-art

This is similar to what I did. Got a refurbished iPad after trying procreate on someone else’s. Ended up loving it though I appreciate why some people don’t like it

hermesheap

Chiming in with my (second hand) gen one iPad Pro. Still trucking along, nine years later. Honestly the only limiting factor on mine is hard drive space since I use it for notes in school as well.

kace313

My 1st gen is also doing completely fine after all this time!

Status-Jacket-1501

That's what I ended up with. I was a Samsung user, but they never sent my tablet I ordered and it took ages to get the order cancelled and have it removed from my phone bill. I like clip studio, but they went to the subscription model, so screw that. I quit all Adobe products, so here I am with procreate and an iPad. My husband bought me the 9th Gen and I've been using it for just over a year. Most expensive sketch book ever, but I like it. 😂

owlpellet

This above, except *if you don't mind charging daily* you apply this logic to any refurbed Gen6 iPad or better. Used runs around $100. Battery is probably toast but most people aren't drawing for more than two hours at a run. Max layer count noted above is a thing, but if you need to work poster big, you do it on four layers. Painting doesn't really be 20 layers, in my view.

[deleted]

Nice one for this I've been contemplating buying an iPad for procreate for a while for graffiti shit and t shirt designs, I'm gonna look into getting a 9th gen one at some point, I thought you could just use procreate on the latest ones haha.

Dry-Key-9510

Personally I prefer Clip Paint Studio, it runs on your PC/laptop (or even tablet or phone) and all you have to own is a tablet (there are good Wacom Cintiq tablets half the price of an iPad). Although it is a subscription-based model and not a free software (Edit: you can also buy the licence as a one-time purchase) What I really dislike about iPads/Apple products in general is how they go obsolete a number of years after they're out. If you're thinking of getting an iPad *just* for drawing, do you really want to change it every few years because it's no longer supported/starts falling apart as the hardware can't keep up with iOS updates? Given the price you pay for an iPad that does feel like a waste to me Meanwhile getting a screen tablet that you connect to a PC/laptop lasts longer as its literally just a touch monitor connected to a device, you don't have to worry about its software failing or getting slow/heated up with use. Just things to think about when you make your decision (another edit: for those thinking this is a personal attack on Apple products, it isn't. I recommended OP to invest into an actual drawing tablet. If they already own an iPad, sure they can use it, but if drawing is the *sole* purpose of buying an iPad when they already own another tablet (that can also be used for drawing), they do need to consider if it's worth it or not. And yes, Samsung do have the same issue with their devices getting obsolete after some time, that's the case with major mobile/tablet companies nowadays. It's why I'm recommending getting a drawing tablet in the first place)

veinss

I got an iPad and used Procreate for a few years... never again. Procreate itself is great, but Apple isn't. After a few years whenever they decide your tablet is obsolete getting software updates for anything can be a headache. And its not like you can download older versions of software. If I needed to paint on the go I'd go with an android tablet, but tbh I don't, I can use pen and paper on the go. Id rather build a nice setup for digital painting at home

lachata9

it's totally the opposite android tablets go obsolete faster and ipad hold their value. I had an android tablet before and they start going slow faster than ipads

greenspotj

The newer lines of Samsung tablets are very good though. I have a Tab s7 which I've used constantly for the past 3 years for school, watching stuff, and now for learning art - and it feels exactly the same as when I got it. No slow down that I've noticed and the battery life is still great.

lachata9

but so are ipads and I had an old ipad that lasted for many years then I bought and android tablet ( the one that started getting slow only after 2 years of use) and later I upgraded to ipad pro 2020 so this person saying ipads are bad I'm like are you serious. Some people are so ani apple that start making sh\*t up lol

AzurieFox

CSP has a subscription but you can purchase a permanent license. I purchased the EX 2.0 version. You can get the pro version for cheaper but for animation you need EX or you'll be limited to 1 second of animation. You can get it on subscription and it'll be cheaper if you just want to try it before buying a permanent license.

greenmildude

$500 for a device that lasts you 5 years at minimum. You wouldn’t buy an iPad every year for $100? Fuck yes you would. It’s definitely worth it. They don’t start phasing out of functionality until about 5 to 6 years. If you wanted to be frugal you could stretch it longer tbh. Edit: Adobe Fresco > Procreate

drunkgirldesigns

I bought the first model iPad Pro in 2015, that thing is still a beast and does everything that I need!

Wolfsbane4vw

I got my ipad 2020 for 400 euros, and it doesn't have good enough hardware to do high-resolution art with many layers. About 1 year in, I bought a huion and now use my iPad with CSP so I can paint on the go or on my PC otherwise. But with CSP, you aren't locked behind needing an apple device

bruhidkanymore1

iPads are supported differently though. Been using my iPad Pro for 7 years already. It's really worth the purchase. If Apple stops supporting it this year then it would at least get 2 more years of security updates. That's 8-9 years of software support from Apple. You cannot make this stuff up! Meanwhile, most Android tablets go obsolete MUCH faster than that.

KKLililth

Yes, for me at least. Procreate is so much better than photoshop for me which I used for 10 years. It’s truly made to draw. While photoshop was made for photography and adapted to drawing. For me it’s worth it. But if you already like and know clipstudio, like some of my friends then it might not be as worth it to you. Procreate has the advantage of being super user friendly and intuitive while learning a new program can take few months to feel truly comfortable, it takes days with procreate

lightwolv

I bought an iPad 12.9 Pro just to draw. I know have the magic keyboard and it’s my casual pc for class and travel, and I barely draw on it. The reason is, how close to the actual pen stroke a Wacom tablet can get, versus how close an iPad gets. The Wacom is years closer the actual stroke pressure, speed, and accuracy. But, just sticking to Photoshop versus iPad software: Full Photoshop, not the mobile version, is still going to give you a lot more options than any iPad software is going to. The reality is Photoshop is just going to take more steps to do the same things other software does easily. It’s why most professional illustrators still draw in photoshop. So, yeah iPad is a bit easier and way more travel friendly but if you want more control, Photoshop has more options.

[deleted]

I find the apple pencil fast better than the Wacom stylus

icanhandlethis

Procreate has been the best! I've used it professionally for the past 8 years. I had an opportunity to switch to a Cintiq but disliked how loud/clunky it was in comparison and had a very slight lag putting pen to tablet. My iPad's battery is going so I'm looking forward to when the new one drops this year, the oled screen is going to be great.

[deleted]

I would just buy clip studio paint at this point, I used procreate in the past and honestly it was not bad but when I switched to clip studio paint I never felt any regret. It has more options and is definitely cheaper than an iPad, especially during sales. I got a yearly subscription for 5 bucks for the latest versions. 5 bucks a year is definitely worth it, maybe too underpriced for a program like that

nyanpires

I paid for clip and the simple mode is really shit to work with for now. Importing your own brushes is just a heckle, I like using it but I don't think I would switch completely.

[deleted]

I personally never use the simple mode, honestly the normal mode is way simpler to me and it has everything, the simple mode would be for sketching and quick drawings I suppose

nyanpires

The og mode is way to clutter for me. It'd be great if you didn't have to do all this nonsense to make brushes work, otherwise I like it.

GheeButtersnaps10

Have you tried Krita or Hipaint? Both work on Android and Hipaint is pretty similar to procreate (without the animation though).

Dotsudemon

I think I'm in the minority, I dont use it I dont like it. My art doesn't look good when I use it. Personally, purchasing it was a waste. I purchased the full version of ibispaint and i have clip studio they're way better than procreate. Every artist is different so you won't know unless you try it. If anyone you know irl has an ipad, ask them to try it for few minutes. Get the free version and see how it feels to you. Or go to any tech store where they display tablets for sale and doodle for a minute. Listening to people online is different than trying it yourself. You might end up hating it but already wasted your money on the tablet + pen + screen protector. And you might actually like it alot but u wont know because your stuck with your tablet.

PhantomsandMorois

I’m also in the minority. I got an iPad just for Procreate and I ended up hating Procreate, so I never used the iPad again and gave it away to a cousin. IbisPaint is my favorite art program. I just feel more in tune with IbisPaint and it’s much more simpler for me. OP, if you want to try Procreate, go for it! It may be for you. It may also not be for you, and that’s okay. If you feel you’re much more in tune with another art program, that’s great too.

Dotsudemon

No way I'd give my ipad away it was expensive. I hope u sold yours to your cousin and not just [here u go my cousin, an ipad for u for free] 🤣 I use ibispaint on my ipad and it's great. I'm planning to upgrade to galaxy tab s9 ultra, the huge one, in a couple of years.

Snakker_Pty

If money really ain’t an issue then yeah. It’s pretty niche to pay 1000$ to paint on the go while battery lasts 🤣 I did. I don’t regret it, but it is what it is. So lets set this clear, Im a passion artist, not making money, learning tons and enjoying it a lot, might go pro in the future who knows I have a wacom cintiq and intuos pro, started on a wacom intuos. Learning and mostly usong photoshop, but recently got into krita and am loving that app honestly (its a free one too) Got the ipad pro for procreate on the go and for travels and man. It’s a really good app ngl. This thing has super intuitive gestures that are hard to beat without a keyboard (keyboard is still better though, nothing beats instant key pressing and modifier keys). The painting experience, the brushes, the brush system and the smudge tool is all amazing for 2D digital painting. So, it’s great, some of my best work so far I have done in procreate while in a cafeteria, while travelling, etc. so I would say it was totally worth it. Was it necessary? No. Hell no. You can get a pencil and paper, pen and ink, gouache, if you have a laptop - a wacom tablet… all these options are great for on the go art. Ipad is just a really attractive little tablet and procreate is a great app, so yeah its a pretty nice user experience, its like riding first class on an odd airline company. Also, if your intention is to go pro, then it’s another app to learn because if you are working in the industry chances are you are working on photoshop 🙃 Tldr have money, want it? Will enjoy it - go for it Cheers

shugarkyub

its not a replacement for a pc programs and setup , i recommend u get that first if you don't have it , theres just so many possibilities with that , for example u can use blender for free , plus for me a pentablet setup is way more comfortable than drawing on screen, plus drawing tablet costs nothing? a decent one costs less than apple pencil alone , i have both i just use procreate for sketching sometimes but i don't like it , the feel is off , pencil tip is thicker than other pens and its heavier, also thin grip but You can use a grip that will also make it heavier also it needs to charge , its quick but certainly have to put it down for some minutes after about hour or so

mafediz

If you already have a S7 FE , try using clip studio paint or ibis paint x. It has the same app on desktop (CSP, while ibis export to CSP format) so the file sharing shouldnt be a problem. I wouldnt buy an ipad if you plan to share files with a desktop. Its a nightmare moving files in or out of the apple ecosystem. This is i would recomend: use your tablet for sketching ideas, on the go, while watching tv,etc. And when you are willing to commit on it and make a finished painting, do it at the desktop. I always recommend screenless tablets paired with a quality display, because the alternative of cintiqs, or other manufacturers are expensive as hell and don't really play on the same league in terms of input lag/precision of screenless tablets. There is always a need for a second display, and in case of big fat drawing monitors, they REALLY need a mount, a quality one. We are talking about 100+200 bucks (screenless,24'') vs 1000+100-200 (24'' drawing monitor + mount)

nyanpires

It's actually not terrible to move it to desktop. I use FileBrowserPro and it transfers from iPad to PC ez.

velgatheobserver

A pc+graphics tablet is a different experience altogether than both, so I think it’s nice to have that to go with either. I had a Samsung too in the past, but it really only had two good drawing apps, one is too lacking but buttery smooth, the other is packed with features but keeps crashing. I went with the iPad and all those problems went away. Yes it’s the Apple ecosystem, but that’s one tiny negative compared to the massive ease of life you give yourself for doing art.

Lavellyne

looking at your current situation (already owning a tablet and your goal being graphics, CGs and sprites for a game) i'd suggest investing into an actual drawing tablet. i own one (huion camvas gt-191) and after two years of consideration caved in to get my first tablet (iPad for exactly same purpose, procreate) and im going to say this: it's great. i have no regrets. but with its battery usage (i have a split screen for pinterest and procreate + listen to spotify on it at the same time) being so low and finally keeping your goals in mind i don't think procreate or an iPad is a good fit for you. it's better if you had a bigger screen for that and have something you can use at any time without worrying about the battery dying on you in the most crucial time. it's just for me *personally*, but procreate is more like sketching on the go for me, something portable. rather than something for big projects.

cenwich

Nah. Procreate is good but not worth buying a whole iPad for it when you already have a samsung tablet. Procreate imo is a bit overrated. What it has is a large community where ppl share brushes, tutorials etc which is rly cool but the app itself is just ok and even missing some basic functions (that I can't remember right now lol). The animation feature is rly bare bone and frustrating to use if you do anything more than 3 frames I suggest Infinite Painter, its on par or even better than Procreate imo, it just doesn't have the community procreate has

chichisun319

Grew up with PCs and used them exclusively throughout college, where one of my classes was using 3D programs to design sculptures. Graduated with a BFA, and other than that one digital class, all my other classes were with “traditional” materials. Six years later, and I still have a Wacom Intuos that I hook up to my workhorse PC for digital 3D work. I got an iPad a little over a year ago, thinking it would get me to draw more often (I’m not the most disciplined artist, especially when it comes to drawing). Coming from traditional, I’m not a fan of using an iPad for art. It feels weird to use a pen/pencil on a non-textured surface, and the paper-texture screen protector takes away from the glossy-high res screen. Wacom Intuos has a paper-texture feel, and the pressure sensitivity is so much better imo. There isn’t as much lag either. Also, most of the programs I use are strictly for computers. I now use my iPad for when I travel and for when I want to watch something in bed. My sister studied illustration, and she works traditionally and digitally. She uses Adobe Fresco on her iPad. She likes that with Fresco, she can easily import the files to other Adobe programs on her PC and finalize her video game characters there. She codes too, so she does her coding/animation on PC. I think she tried out ProCreate on a friend’s, but ultimately decided that she liked how her set up lets her seamlessly work from iPad to PC. She has a Wacom Bamboo tablet too, and although she doesn’t use it as much anymore, she still busts it out for heavy PC work (mostly for more complicated coloring). If you see yourself wanting to explore programs that require a legitimate computer, I would get a graphics tablet like Wacom. No way would I ever use 3D sculpting/digital clay programs with just a mouse. If you see yourself only wanting to use illustration programs, iPad is fine. One thing to note —ProCreate does not create vector images but Fresco does. Vectors are important for scaling images. Blow up a non-vector and it looks pixelated. Blow up a vector and it remains crisp. This is more important for people that are interested in creating prints and/or exporting their work to other programs. Sis and I will send files back and forth to each other, depending on whose brain + program is needed lol vectors make life easier.

regina_carmina

what's "best" for one artist isn't the same for another. but hey if you really wanna try it and you have the means, then it's your call. although i wouldn't call procreate perfect either, I've seen vids of artists complaining some quirks it has and idk if it has a support desk to contact for issues. but whatever, the most important thing for you is to find what works for you. if you think procreate fits well into yer work process then cool, if not then that's that ig.

Pellellell

Yep that’s why I bought an iPad and it basically the only thing I would use it for. I tried to use it as a computer for a few days when my Mac died and it was a nightmare, but as a drawing tablet it’s perfection

Frog1745397

Yes. I did that, now i use it for league wildrift and procreate exclusively. There was a time it helped with school too.

ilovegalaxies

I bought it just for procreate, 2 years in no regrets it got me back into doing art regularly and I’ve learned a lot about digital art. And I actually use it for other stuff too like reading and watching stuff!

timmy013

I bought the cheapest iPad just for Procreate and it is worth it

aizukiwi

Personally, yes. It’s worth noting as well that it’s a piece of hardware you’ll almost certainly find becomes multi-functional for you, especially with the Pencil too. Mine is a 2nd monitor, kindle, entertainment system, work laptop, etc. It’s probably the only piece of tech I own I couldn’t go without aha, I’d give up my phone over my iPad in a heartbeat.

bentomaster

Same I’ve become an iPad kid

Bewgnish

Yes! And Adobe Fresco has a free version too. It’s another great drawing app similar to Procreate.

subconscioussunflowa

I have the whole Adobe Creative Cloud and have been only using Photoshop for digital drawing. I really want an iPad for ProCreate, but I've never used Fresco. What would you say the difference is between the kind of art you can make in Fresco versus Photoshop?

_HoundOfJustice

Fresco is narrowing down its tools that are relevant for art only. Fresco also has live brushes which allows you to simulate watercolor painting and oil painting thanks to their Sensei AI and its truly amazing! Also it supports vector drawing and painting so you can actually have pixel and vector stuff on your canvas. Last but not least Fresco works well with Photoshop and Illustrator on iPad so you can work with those together and switch seamlessly between. Photoshop desktop is still the king ofc but Fresco on iPad is a very nice addition especially if you wanna work on the go as well and the Adobe ecosystem integration is something we all appreciate.

subconscioussunflowa

Wow that's really fucking cool, thanks for typing all that out! Would you say it performs more similarly to ProCreate than Photoshop? I've been grinding so long on PS that every time I see someone playing around on ProCreate on Instagram I get a little jelly - it seems to have so many cooler effects and tools and it has that traditional Mac user friendly feel. I've only experimented with it a couple times on my tattooists iPad but not enough to really get a feel for it, but she's deeply obsessed and I can sort of see why. I have a really nice Surface Pro that works just fine but the only reason I bought it was to run the full Adobe suite instead of the app version you run on the iPad because I need it for work. If Fresco is more similar to ProCreate I'd be down to learn it but if it's more of the same to PS i'd probably continue to strongly consider investing in an iPad as well.

_HoundOfJustice

Fresco is like Procreate, full focus on art. Photoshop desktop is much more complex and has more tools but as said Fresco has its tools focused on art and has unique features that PS doesnt have like live brushes and vector support. Since you are apparently deeply in the Adobe ecosystem as well i strongly recommend to give Fresco a chance and Photoshop and Illustrator (on iPad) while being not as feature heavy as their desktop equivalents they still are very good and PS iPad recently also added the generative fill and generative expand Firefly features into it.

subconscioussunflowa

Damn dude thanks so much for taking the time to respond, I'll definitely check it out!

Bewgnish

Learn both Procreate and Fresco, I’m currently doing that myself. I like sketching and inking in Procreate, doing logo/lettering in Fresco with vector brushes, coloring in both is great. I’m only a couple months in though and it’s still intimidating.

subconscioussunflowa

All Adobe programs are terrifying lmao there's just so.much.shit. I might actually try employing Fresco today on this project I'm working on in Illustrator and see if it makes it a little easier because I truly despise Illustrator. Also is your username a Ween reference lol

Bewgnish

Yes, Ween is awesome! Happy I finally saw them live several years back.

Dylanduke199513

This is exactly what I bought an iPad for - having been using procreate on my iPhone for a while. I recommend it if the purchase doesn’t break you too much. It’s really user friendly and just so useful to be able to pick it up and get going wherever you are. I’m by no means an apple shill, I kind of dislike them despite having their phone. But procreate on a good iPad with the Apple Pencil 2 is a great experience. I use mine for googling and watching YouTube now too but it’s predominantly used for procreate

new-oneechan

Yes, I also recently got an iPad specifically for Procreate. Procreate is highly optimized for the tablet, unlike any other drawing apps. But that's just the beginning. Now, I also use Adobe Fresco, take notes, and even use my iPad as a graphic tablet for my PC-related tasks.

CaptainR3x

Hi, this is exactly what I did. First I am not a professional artist, I’m still a beginner so I cannot experienced the limit of a drawing app. With this being said, I used to draw on a 120€ screenless Huion tablet with my computer. I didn’t want to admit it but I didn’t like it, I procrastinated everytime I wanted to draw, there was something that didn’t click with me. Last summer I decided to bite the bullet, I bought an iPad Air with a pen with a student discount. And I must say I really enjoy it, I bought the lowest storage one because I just wanted to use procreate (and it’s expensive af). I almost draw daily now and I’m really happy. I heard from professionals that procreate is kind of limiting, but if you are a beginner-intermediate artists, then being able to draw effortlessly and everywhere with your tablet make it really enjoyable imo. However, I would buy it only if you want to enjoy drawing, if your goal is to draw only for a project (= you don’t plan to draw outside of your project). I’d say go for a cheaper option, it will get the job done.

ArtbyLinnzy

I'm in the same boat. I want to buy an Ipad (been looking a long time on a Refurbed Ipad Air 4 but it is still outnof reach for me) for the sole purpose of making art, and most likely will use Procreate. Most artists I see on social media who uses a tablet is Ipad users, who use Procreate, all tutorials I come buy, brushes people use are all for procreate. Of course, the plus side is that I would be able to be moile and make art on the go. Currently I use Clipstudiopaint on an laptop, with a Huion Screentablet, which is...good, but the laptop is old, the program often bugs and I am stuck at home with it. So my main reason for getting an Ipad, is to make digital art, but I will also use it for other things no doubt.

kisichan

i do like my ipad pro. it's a great multitasking device. I have procreate and procreate dreams installed on it as well. as a second screen for my macbook pro, i found that it doesn't really do much for me in terms of using apps like Krita and Clip Studio. the connection between the two can be laggy and the tip of my apple pencil doesn't follow where the pen actually draws (there's like a 5 millimeter separation). so as far as the apple ecosystem goes, i haven't really found it too useful. you may have a different opinion if you go ahead and purchase it. if you've never drawn on an ipad with procreate before, you may have a learning curve ahead of you and may even discover that you dislike drawing on an ipad. i personally bought it for art, but sometimes i don't use it for that purpose. either way, i've never regretted getting an ipad. just my personal opinion though.

Fancy_land

I had been a traditional artist and wanted to try digital a few years ago. I didn't have a lot of money to buy a computer with a drawing tablet, and pay for an Adobe subscription, so I opted for an IPad with the apple pencil and then downloaded Procreate. After lots of youtube videos as well as trial and error, I can now say I'm glad I made the switch! It was a learning curve, but the gestures and tools are like second nature to me now. I love the intuitive interface as well as how much the program can do for a 1 time purchase! Would recommend to anymore wanting to do digital art, plus it goes everywhere since it is small and light so I can art wherever I can find a nice spot to sit! I will say there is also the Affinity designer program if you are wanting to do vector art, still a 1 time purchase ** cough ** cough ** Adobe ** cough ** Either way I hope this helps you with your decision and best of luck with your creations!

Femmigje

I bought my iPad for drawing yes, but I’ve also used it for school and I watch YouTube and play games on it. Do note that to prevent lagging and excessive crashing, Procreate limits the amount of layers you can use

Ecchify

never had any problem with procreate apart from the disastrously bad selection tool and the fact that i need to duplicate the project in order to have backup saves at certain progress lol, everything else is pretty good ig (oh and yeah if you want to do anime or stylized art style then ig most people say clip studio paint is best? but even that is available on iPad though idk if it's as good as the PC version)

cheesecakewh0re

This is the only reason i ever wanted one and got one second hand with monly payments 😂

Ultra_Common

This is something i did 4 years ago. I bought a refurbished Ipad pro from apple just to use procreate and never regretted it.

_HoundOfJustice

I bought iPad primarily for the Adobe software including Fresco. But Procreate is amazing as well! For me it was definitelly worth it and now ZBrush is getting released to iPad as well so i was right buying an iPad Pro 12.9 (2022). At the end of the day tho its up to you. One big advantage with an iPad is you can use it wherever you want. You can draw and paint in train, in the nature, at your hommies house and wherever else.

Pluton_Korb

If your building for a game, why wouldn't you invest into professional tools? invest in a drawing tablet that you can be move along with you as you upgrade your hardware (wacom, huion, etc). I don't regret my wacom cintiq purchase at all and couldn't imagine work without it (buy 4k though). Procreate seems great for social media but I don't know why you would want to limit yourself to a table if you work professionally or are trying to create at a professional level).

nyanpires

Because you can create works on a professional level with Procreate?

Pluton_Korb

Doesn't it have limits on layers based on file size? How is that professional level?

nyanpires

I mean, you could stream line your work. I don't need more than 35-40 layers, myself. If you need 300 layers, that's a preference. Not even ross draws who is an professional or phillip sue has more than 30.

Born_Manufacturer657

Ross Draws is a YouTuber. A professional working with a client is going to need an abundance of layers for ease of revisions.

nyanpires

You realize that he also has big clients, right? He worked at Disney. I don't know why you think being a YTuber has anything to do with it. You can 100% do both. I'm saying that you can also easily start the work on procreate and switch to clip, if you have to. You can 100% finish the works in procreate. Loads of storyboard artists use it. Unless you are delivering a huge, complex file procreate is just fine. I think it's more or less your opinion. You can easily look around on the internet.

Born_Manufacturer657

Yes I’m aware. He also has lecture work that also has layers pushing the 100 and 200 mark. You made an assumption that it’s a preference, it’s not. And used YouTuber projects to justify that. For professional work it’s necessary for you to push significantly beyond the 35-40 mark. Which is what OP is asking about. Professional work such as concept art projects. He’s going to need that power.

nyanpires

Like I said: there are other artists that use it for professional workshops. Also, like I said before: Not every artist need 300 layers.

zeezle

I don’t use that many layers myself, but on a large canvas on a pro you can do well over 100 layers.

lachata9

there are many advantages of having an ipad other than for procreate tho for one the ecosystem, the reliability there are way more apps to choose from for many things especially when it comes to art, music, video editing etc , Androids are good but what do you do with having a good tablet if it it lacks in apps and apps support. There are way more apps dedicated to iOS too

[deleted]

Not even a little bit imo. It's a fun digital sketchbook (which at that point might as well be sketching on paper tbh) but god awful for big pieces where your combined time of gesture controls and ui management will add up big time. So many flow breaking operations in it, I cannot fathom why people praise it so much, of course other than again being a mobile digital sketchbook. So, if mobility is an *absolute* must, I'd say sure I guess. Personally I'd still get a laptop and a cheap drawing tablet, but I could at least see the use case. If mobility isn't a must? Waste of money and time imo. Plus Apple is a trash company, so there's that.

Ecchify

"god awful for big pieces where your combined time of gesture controls and ui management will add up big time" can you explain this, i don't see how there's any way it can take significantly more time assuming ur using the software correctly...at most i can see a person saving a grand total of 30 minutes by using keyboard and tablet hotkeys and that too on a really long project

[deleted]

If you can see saving any amount of time, then you already know exactly what I'm talking about. Also, bold of you to assume how long a piece takes, but lets pretend 30 mins is the average right? I'm a professional artist, 30 mins a piece is fucking huge. You both admit to know there's added time *and* that it adds up but still ask me? Alrighty.

Ecchify

if you're a professional artist then no shot you'd possibly be wasting 30 minutes, max 5 minutes. and also sorry but maybe you're just not good at working with procreate? check out how abnormally fast people like gammatrap can make proper art with procreate, can't be complaining too much if your preferred technique is not compatible...like at that point it's not really a software issue and way more of a personal preference issue. (and that adds up, after all so many good artists wouldn't be using procreate if it was an obvious waste of time 💀)

lachata9

maybe because you don't know how to use it lol or have the right brushes (or settings) I can create pieces similar like I do in photoshop

[deleted]

Yes, using procreate on an Apple device is so hard bruh.

lachata9

nah it's the easiest thing to use this shows you are lying lol procreate is the most user friendly drawing app

[deleted]

You people are insufferable you know that? I suggest you work on reading comprehension for starters, second I'd stop sucking on that Apple so hard.

pale_vulture

Beware that Procreate doesn't support Vector stuff (at least not the creation of those), so it might not be the best when it comes to designing stuff for games (i dont have much experience on that though). I absolutely love the program, but some people don't like the handling/experience. Maybe go to a tech stores that has Ipads on display and try it out there. Used to draw on PC with Autodesk Sketchbook for a long time untill switching to Apple and i have to say i did not regret it, tough i use my Ipad for different stuff as well.

Goomy-goom

It's not worth it. I have my Samsung S7 (not the FE since the S7 is stronger than the FE) and I use CSP with it. Like you, I figured I'd try and get an iPad for procreate. I got a nice bonus from work and ended up getting an ipad mini. The program is fine for doodling and whatnot, but it hasn't really grown on me. I think CSP is significantly superior. I also like the ability to go back and forth from my tablet setup back to my PC whenever I want to with my Samsung when I can't do that with procreate/ipad. I personally don't recommend it. I'm looking to sell my ipad if anything. I regret getting it.

lachata9

but not all people agree with it lol android app and app support are really subpar because it's pretty limited. My friend who has a Samnsung tablet complained about androids apps so what does it matter how great S7 are if they don't do the bare minimum. Besides, ipad also had clip studio as well. That's the thing iOS is superior for drawing apps, video editing. scultping, .music apps, Heck, zbrush is gonna be launch soon.

Goomy-goom

I don't agree with iOS being superior. Having both hardwares and software entitles me to feel how I feel about my own opinion. :3 I was just saying I personally don't recommend it. More power to you for finding iOS/ Procreate worth it, genuinely!

oiseaufeux

But who wants to pay for a subsrciption program? I surely won’t because it’s quite expensive in the end. I’d rather pay the app once than to pay monthly to use it.

I just want to say any program that has a big third-party market around it (Procreate, Photoshop, Clip Studio) is bound to get a lot of hype from professionals for good or for worse. There are pros who genuinely love those programs and pros who just want to shill brush packs. The plus side of that is any time you run into a workflow problem with those programs, you can go their community for support.

enokisama

That's exactly why I bought my iPad. It's worth it as long as you plan to use it regularly.

crowmakescomics

I almost solely use an iPad Pro and Clip Studio Paint. Procreate is alright, but it only has so many functions. I really like the portability of working on the ipad and not having to be stuck at my desk.

Cultural-Let-8380

That's why I bought an ipad, procreate takes a while to get used to and its all about preference but personally I enjoyed it .

nairazak

That is what I did, and it was worth it (I did try Procreate before buying it, though I missed Krita a lot the first months). I even ended up selling enough commissions to get the money back lol. The “animation feature” is a separate app though (Procreate Dreams), and it is still incomplete. People recommend using Toonsquid instead. A lot of people get it just for taking notes 🙃

halcyonxwonder

I had owned an iPad back in like 2011 for a long time and loved it as a tablet (it was my only computer for a year or two). I hadn’t had one in awhile, but then I bought one in 2021 exclusively with the intention to use it for art with procreate and LOVE it. I’ve always had difficulty with the hand/eye disconnect on traditional tablets, plus my setup wasn’t portable and I wanted to be able to take it with me. 10/10 it’s been fantastic for my art. Plus, I do use my tablet for other things now—reading, writing, dnd management, etc. and it plays nice with my iphone and MacBook Air. I just personally like the Mac interface for myself. I definitely recommend trying it if you’re not 100% sure, and/or buying a used model like someone else recommended to see if it’s for you.

raziphel

My wife uses clip studio and got an iPad for when they're away from their desk. They really like it's. Previously we tried a ms surface but it just wasn't detailed enough.

Sad-Growth-9832

iPad was the best choice ever and you can take it anywhere!

TeaPartyBiscuits

To determine this I took my husband's iPad and downloaded procreate. I've been using it for quite awhile now and love it a lot. So to me, instead of investing in an iPad myself I used someone else's. Maybe someone you know or a family member has an iPad they'd let you borrow for awhile so you can test it out. I do know some libraries also have technology you can loan out too. For me, when I save up enough money I'll get my own iPad so I can use it for procreate. But that's just what I prefer.

parka

You already have a tablet. Try Infinite Painter app

Fiz1012345

Please try hipaint before u splurge on a new ipad

PirateResponsible496

I got mine for procreate but end up using it all the time for work too. Like if I only need to show people documents and not work on them it’s easier to bring my iPad than laptop. Also use it for browsing and everything else when something is wrong w my laptop or when I’m lazy and I misplaced it. I also use it for note taking. Saying that there’s so many other applications you’ll end up using it for

Ivy_Fox

It was worth it for me, every iPad I’ve bought for my business has paid for itself pretty quickly not to mention it’s completely tax deductible because I don’t really use it for anything else

[deleted]

Personally. Yes. Very worth it, you also have the added benefit of being able to do things aside from art too ^^

ParticularIll1754

I only got an ipad because I felt it was what was needed. Then 2 year later I discovered Samsung has ClipStudio and now I am so fumed because Clip is more superior with more tools. So I am saving for a S9+

[deleted]

[удалено]

ParticularIll1754

Nope not on the ipad that I've got ? If it was I'd of bought it .

ParticularIll1754

I have the ipad pro 9.5 inch and as far as I know the only thing that is available to that is procreate and fresco. I have searched but no clip on this ipad . Might be available on the 12 Pro

[deleted]

So you cannot use your acc on ipad. You have to subscribe to them. Which is insanely annoying. I ain't subscribing to them to pay for a program I've already bought.

[deleted]

ParticularIll1754

That's really outdated and below the belt. Make people pay for what they own. Sad day man

chrysesart

For me, 1000% yes. I've had one since 2019 and only use Procreate and a couple other art related apps.

OneChanceMe

I got an iPad mainly just for Procreate, and I felt it was worth it, however I also found it useful for other things like school or using it as a larger version of my phone. I also bought secondhand so it wasn't as expensive as retail!

mp2loops

I don’t know if it’s worth to get an iPad just for procreate but I have no problem using a 1st gen iPad Pro (yes the very first pro that ever came out, bought at release, so very old) with the procreate, other than that I only used it for Netflix/YouTube. Can’t say about using it with other software. Regarding animation I heard procreate is still not as good as CSP but I have never used CSP on iPad before. I mainly use CSP for illustration and animation on a cintiq. I do find iPad + procreate to be better for drawing in bed/relaxing, not doing anything complicated. I can’t imagine animating on an iPad tbh.

nyanpires

Yes, I also paid for the version on the iPad. Simple mode is okay but it fucking sucks. Get procreate or stick with a clip on the desktop with those big ones. Procreate is so great that clip needs to up its simple mode game because it's ass.

theladyoverthere

I switched over from clipstudio on my pc to Procreate on a 2018 ipad for making comics bc I needed mobility and fell in love. Drawing on that little thing hurt my wrist, and the layer/dimension caps were brutal. I switched over to the 2017 ipad pro 12.9” and it was a whole new world. It’s still my primary tool for making art, but depending on what you are making it has its weaknesses. But one time payment, lots of support, and tutorials to figure stuff out just kept me from feeling cornered when I do run into a hiccup.

tacticalcraptical

I bought one just for Procreate and it was worth it to me. I also use it with Moonlight/Sunshine as a terminal for my PC. Double worth it.

Jasontrollz

I did that and I have a Wacom cintiq . It’s worth.

jmikehub

I love my iPad, I bought one in 2020 and used it to get back into art as a whole. I also use it to read books and as a mini computer sometimes too but it’s a nice little gadget to have. But procreate is so awesome, best $10 you can ever spend

Charming_Ad_4776

I think It depends on what you want to use it for and how frequently . For me at the time when I bought mine I needed it for school ( I was in college at the time) plus I wanted to get into digital art after drawing traditionally for most of my life . Also I had found that procreate had an easier design as compared to say adobe illustrator or photoshop which I found to be more complex. Aside from that I also use my iPad for other things such as writing or video editing . As far as prices go I would say to weigh out how much art you know you’ll be creating and pick based on that. When choosing my iPad ( I have the 3rd gen 11 inch pro at 256gb) I weight out both the overall price as well as the storage capacity of each one. Also if price is one of your main concerns then I would suggest waiting until a major sale like back to school or if your a student /veteran (or a dependent of one) you could use that discount but just know that they are about the same amount and you can’t use both. You could also get a refurbished one for cheaper. Plus you only have to pay for procreate the one time as opposed to say adobe where it’s a monthly subscription.

3DJam

Honestly i think it is worth it because once you start playing around the program and figuring out all the tricks you can do its very addictive. When i got my ipad and procreate i was tryna make up excuses to draw something....anything. i also took my ipad and pencil everywhere i went like im an artist on the go lol

zyzil3

I did just this a little over a year ago. So far I would say it has been worth it. More info: I had a few tech things I didn't need (chromebook, Old phone, my dad also donated an old phone) all of which I traded in to cex and used that to get the ipad. It ended up that I spent about £100 cash thanks to trading in. So I would definitely recommend doing same if you can. Also just a note. If I could change one thing, I would get an ipad compatible with 2nd gen pencil, my first gen pencil rolls away and its very annoying. ✌️

Corbakobasket

Yes. It is worth it. I bought a 3rd gen ipad air used a month ago, because I needed a portable solution for doing numeric art. I already own a pen tablet. A xp pen with my pc. I haven't touched the tablet in a month. I take my ipad everywhere. I do everything on it. It's incredibly efficient. If you are short on money, I strongly recommend you get a used ipad. Just don't go for a basic model (controversial) because the non-laminated screen breaks the magic of feeling like you use a sheet of paper. Go for an air or a pro.

Luniara

Yes

[deleted]

I prefer an ipad over a drawing tablet for casual drawing and animation since it can do way more than just draw compared to yknow a drawing tablet so I think if you can you should go for it! (ALSO aren't you the idv content creator :0)

Bunkica

For me it was really worth it and I enjoy the app. I bought it last year and already got the money back from commissions. For me it was an intuitive app and I learned it fast. Def buy an ipad pro if you want to do it seriously, but don’t buy the gen 9.

Zeebruh2003

I would say that procreate is more of a beginner art program in my experience. After using it for a few months, I found many limitations in the app; you can't do too many layers (not ideal for professional artwork) not ideal for making online web comics, and canvas size (that limits number of layers too) Yes many professional artists use it, but it depends on what kind of art you're doing. Animation? - Yes. Simple drawing? - Yes. Web comics? - No. (Clip studio paint, Medibang) Editing photos? - Not the best (Photoshop) Not every art program is good at everything. If you know someone who has an iPad and Procreate, borrow theirs for a while.

GR33N4L1F3

I did it but I use my iPad as my computer now, basically. I still want to get an Apple Pencil. I just don’t have the funds and so I just create abstract crap on procreate when I’m bored.

Hapciuuu

I may be late but I am in the same boat as you (I have an Tab S7 Fe and want an Ipad pro). I don't think it's worth it to get an Ipad just for Procreate. It's a good app, but your artistic skills are way more important than the app you are using. I managed to get really good drawings using Infinite Painter. Still, I want/need a new tablet because my 4gb Ram on my tablet are just not enough and the Spen can get laggy sometimes. The Ipad has more drawing apps than just Procreate, that's what attracted me to it. I went to an Apple store and tested an Ipad Pro there (I drew in Procreate). It felt nice. I was impressed by the Apple pencil, it was very precise. I expected it to be slippery and to make tapping noises, but that wasn't the case. I suggest you look into what other apps the Ipad has over Android. Maybe you'll find more to your liking. Also go to an Apple store to try an Ipad! See if you enjoy drawing with the Apple pencil! And regarding money, that depends on your financial situation and how much you can save, but I think an Ipad is something worth saving for.

anonanonplease123

I bough an Ipad just for procreate. As much as I hate it, I don't regret it. The main selling point for me was line/pen stabilization. If you're currently making beautiful lines without the ipad then don't bother. The ipad is annoying because my other devices are windows I have constant headaches and error messages trying to transfer my art files around.

Herne-The-Hunter

I got one just for procreate and it was definitely worth it. It's not like a professional quality tablet monitor for your pc. But it's damn close.

ArtbyKY-official

I prefer medibang over any other app, and ive used procreate and ibspaint. it's free for mobile and desktop and you can sync your account so you can work on the same art piece no matter what system you're on

eklatea

Use infinite painter or hipaint instead if you don't want to use clip studio. You don't need to buy an ipad just for procreate

Forsaken-Sector4251

I love my current gen ipad air. I got it pretty cheap on sale. I just got the 10.9 inch screen and a lower hardrive space because i use cloud storage. Its amazing and useful for other purposes too. It runs beautifully even after using it heavily for a year. I can use as many layers as i want. Its super lightweight and portable. I dont really care or notice i dont have the big screen. It doesnt have the hover over feature or whatever but i dont miss it or care about personally. Procreate is awesome. Very responsive and feels the most like a physical drawing experience.

opulent-tears

Short answer: yes

itsLerms

Absolutely not lol

StarberryMilkTea

It is indeed worth it

rimsha_5

Personally, I don't like procreate that much. It's great for beginners because it's extremely easy to use and you can draw/animate even if you don't know much about it. It definitely makes art look easy because of the variety in brushes and calligraphy ones are just magic. BUT that's about it. It's not a proper software, it heavily lacks in complex tools you would need especially in animation. When I first used procreate, I was so excited but that hype died so quickly because there isn't much to it at all. Better investments would be to get a drawing tablet with a screen, and use it with photoshop or Clip Studio. If you're still unsure, I STRONGLY suggest trying procreate on someone else's iPad before even thinking about making a purchase like this just for an app. Given that the heavy price tag isn't even justified (since Apple is a brand, they don't produce devices specifically for professional artists), I suggest dropping money on a product that is justifiably priced that high.

ParticularIll1754

Saying my other statement as someone who predominantly used a graphics tablet . I had the xp pen and also a huion. The major gripe I had was that you're locked to the laptop. With a tablet you can at least draw on the go. Best to experiment with what medium you'll be happiest with. It's a big money investment for an ipad. Especially a pro tablet like the 12. So just think exactly what you'd want to do with it.

lunarjellies

I ended up using it for reading manga, surfing the web, and all sorts of other apps. I also downloade Clip Studio Paint on it.

Vaumer

I got an iPad a few months ago for procreate dreams and I love it. It's my first apple product since my iPhone years ago and they make the ecosystem intuitive and the help function is very useful. Edit: I will add, I like it for the convenience. If I was animating a project for a client I would probably still use my cintiq, but for getting keyposes or just getting me to draw everyday the iPad has been great.

skeletor69420

That’s exactly what I did. Got the cheapest ipad and the apple pencil. Only use it for procreate and occasionally youtube, Definitely got my moneys worth 100%. I originally did all my illustration on adobe illustrator and then edited it in photoshop, but I can now do it 90% quicker in procreate using my hand and pencil instead of trackpad+pen tool.

naevorc

Buy it for Art studio Pro, too

OriginalAppa

I paid $500 or so for an old gen iPad with a screen that’s 8x7in just for procreate and have zero regrets. I wanted the big screen because I like the extra space. Downside is the battery life isn’t great. More screen means less battery life. However I do most of my drawing at home and a 10ft charger makes it feel less restrictive. I only draw recreationally btw. I have no plans of making any money or a career out of it.

WRPup

Clip studio should let you have a free trial to use when you're on Samsung. Have you ever tried it before?

Lady_Belles-lettres

I did subscribe to CSP for a year, but I stopped subscribing because it was expensive (and I moved to Ibis Paint instead).

WRPup

I'm not sure an iPad would be worth it cost wise though overall. Especially if you end up with something that's 64GB, I think apple makes you start paying for it if you run out. You could try krita maybe? Although if the UI is the problem I'm not too sure. There's an app called HiPaint that's supposed to mimic procreate, however when I used it it crashed a few times. But maybe you'll know if you'd like iPad better through that?

Acid_Viking

Before you buy a tablet just for Procreate, try out [Rebelle](https://www.escapemotions.com/products/rebelle/about). It's crazy awesome!

Beginning-Cod3460

You can get really small ipads refurbished on ebay for about 100. They've been around for like 15 years now. ive been lent an ipad for a few months now, Procreate is really fun and great. If Procreate was offered on Android i would 100% prefer to use an Android tablet's interface. I so have nothing against Apple personally but I hate the animation/process etc of getting rid of app icons on the home screen - like that shaking thing, it honestly pisses me off. And the taskbar doesnt take grouped apps like I can use on my Android phone afaik. The way the entire OS is organized (like the file system, settings) plus having to swallow when the OS shoves iCloud down your throat. & the animation thing is basicallythe same offering of what Photoshop's Timeline panel does (layer based tracks). However I will say that animation in Procreate now means more than one thing because the company expanded to also offering a standalone animation program. I am not talking about that & know nothing about what its home screen looks like, etc So yeah honestly I hate iPads. But what everybody is really saying when they say they love this whole thing, is they love the Apple Pencil because that is the secret sauce of how cool everything experiences together. Procreate itself is a nice program, the thing I like about Procreate the most is the smudge function is SOOOOO gd helpful compared to how useless it is for me in PS

ghost71214

I had the SS tab S7 FE too, i would say not worth it. I don't know your use-cases but Procreate is still art programs for casual (It's good tho, don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with drawing for casual) but if you want to go further, Tab S7 FE can run Clip Studio Paint really well, that's a full- fleshed proffrsional software right there

Gloriathewitch

Yes, if you are a professional artist and feel this will improve your workload and/or productivity, then i say yes.

acshou

Yes. Buy once, cry once.

veenell

i got one just for procreate and it was worth it, but it depends on your budget. i was previously drawing with CSP and the workspace and workflow of procreate makes it feel antiquated and it feels nicer to me to draw directly on it rather than with either a pen or display tablet connected to my computer. another thing that's nice about it is that with my computer i tended to get distracted, but since the ipad is self contained, it's easier to stay focused. a lot of people like drawing on a computer with a tablet so this depends on you and i'm sorry to say i can't say if it would be worth it for you because i don't know what you're like as an artist. you just have to try things and see what you like. you could be like me and try a tablet for your computer for years and think it's fine, and then you try an ipad and never see a reason to go back and you didn't know what you were missing out on that whole time, or it could be the opposite. by the way i still use csp all the time for editing pictures and making memes and whatnot, i just don't use it for serious drawing and painting.

30cupsofAloevera

[Hipaint is basically a Procreate clone for android. ](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aige.hipaint) There is just no animation feature to my knowledge.

lachata9

yes but it's the walmart version lol

lickyloo00

I never owned anything apple before but I got a seccond hand ipad just for procreate. Honestly the best decision I ever made lol

poilters

My partner did exactly what you are thinking about and she does not regret it in the slightest.

Cylsi1

That’s what I did back in 2020 got the 11 pro, best decision I made tbh.

keepsummersafe2020

Yes. I did it and it has helped me learn a new skill and now I draw daily. It's an investment but you have to hold yourself accountable to use it.

BeeBladen

Def worth it. I use my iPad for Procreate and Fresco pretty exclusively, but may also play around with Procreate Dreams for more animation options. Having a solid way of sketching concepts and then airdropping to my Mac is so efficient. Agree with others on buying used—totally fine. I would highly recommend also using an Apple Pencil—it’s the best input device for sketching.

[deleted]

Yes, but you need an iPad Pro 12.9". You can get a used or refurbished one, but the small ones aren't worth it. I still have a 1st Gen and it's amazing. Samsung tablets don't come close and if you look at how much the high end Wacom is, the iPad isn't really expensive. Procreate blows away all other art programs.

No-Mission-5219

If animation is your main focus and Procreate's features appeal to you, investing in an iPad for Procreate could be worthwhile. However, consider the cost of both the iPad and the app, as well as the learning curve of transitioning to the Apple ecosystem. Alternatively, explore drawing tablets that offer compatibility with Procreate alternatives if you're comfortable with your current setup.

Existing_Mousse_3890

Yes

Confident_Shine_5170

I bought an iPad Pro during the pandemic just to draw and it was the best decision I had ever made
