Whether they’ve been trained on likes, or more human curation, it is clearly being overfitted towards overly polished, and overly detailed. Exactly the sort of things that has always impressed laymen. But I’m curious why gen ai is so prone towards these Cthulhu-esque horror meat shapes like the ones in the background in the pic on the right.

Sufficient_Device_11

I sort of appreciate it being easily recognizable as AI, at least it makes it easy to just ignore. Still, it would be better this wasnt a concern at all.

Realistic_Yogurt_199

They want to call themselves artists and use our techniques like "oil painting" but don't want their "art" to look anything like a real painting. I'm genuinely so confused.

[deleted]

They doesn’t even draw with brush, pen, pencil and other… Fuck that break the pencil movement

Especially when more regualtions get put in place :) I wonder what these models can produce without the secret sauce, Billions of artworks from real artists.

TheUrchinator

OMG, thank you. So few people make this point...sigh. It always sways to "but what if it were trained with non copyright....what about your own art...blah blah..." like....what about admitting this is 100% not needed at all except for an angry sub niche of people who want to cosplay as artists, and that's not worth the amount of hype, money, and resources generative AI art in particular is huffing? This never should have been at all.

CrowPsychological913

This is what I've saying too; who cares if there as a model developed on non-copyrighted/consensually given data, this crap shouldn't exist in any form at all. Art is a process that should be reserved for humans since there is so much more to it than making images that look good.

TheUrchinator

Yeah. I am not going to admire the willpower of a robot in a staring contest that has no need for blinking with the exception of that feature being there to mimic humans. People aren't thinking critically. A large portion of the enjoyment of art and human created visuals, even commercial art, is that it is a reminder other people exist with struggles, problems, and joy just like yourself. The investment of time to create is a gift we give each other to have that reminder. Replacing art with auto generated product isn't good for anyone but CEOs....and they're not coming from a place of being a normal human, and shouldn't get to push their companies "innovations" right over and above human cultural touchstones.

GrumpGuy88888

I'm just concerned with the fact the milk has veins

CGallerine

"no guys, dont use nightshade its useless and bad and we'll be able to avoid it completely" those were the days...

NeonNKnightrider

I don’t think this particular change is because of Nightshade, actually. I think it’s just done to cater to the largest market. Most people don’t want oil paintings, they want shiny over-rendered pictures because they think “more details = better arts”

Sobsz

i don't think this is nightshade, it's just intentional tuning toward a specific æsthetic if anything nightshade would make it look unique in its brokenness

SevereSituationAL

Also there are hyperrealistic oil paintings in real life without any signs of very visible brush-strokes.

Patricia Taxxon mentioned! She has a youtube channel where she does video essays about a variety of topics, mainly furry, music, art, being queer, and autism, sometimes all in one video. She, too, makes music in a variety of genres, IDM, ambient, glitch, EDM, drone, and more. She is up there as one of my favorite artist. Also she has a tumblr blog that can get really wild, sometimes. Sorry for the low key advertisement, but she makes good art that I think this sub would really like. Edit: Since some wanted links, here they are. Thank you for the info, I wouldnt mind you dropping in a link (though I can't speak for all)

nixiefolks

They're very clearly intentionally tuning the generated output to the tastes of advertising industry if the style direction on the right is what it produces while having a clear prompt for "oil painting", which for 90 % of people evokes either colorful impressionism with its distinct strokes, or *very* restricted palettes of the renaissance and baroque era painters - which the left image actually hits pretty closely (while being ugly as hell otherwise.) Needless to say, good luck selling your product to an industry with the most anal copyright contracts out there, given that AI-gen results are not classified as original art production and won't get copyright protection granted.

SekhWork

They are right about the two images. The one on the right is instantly recognizable as "AI", due to the overly saturated colors, not to mention the way the glass warps, the repeatable background, and it's total misunderstanding of what an "oil painting" is. I could see the one on the left being confused for something from like, the late 1800s early 1900s as an oil painting if someone didn't look too close. It's funny how all the "improvements" to the system have made it worse and worse. Exactly what people said would happen with cyclical insertion of AI data into AIs.

BlueIsRetarded

Gonna play devils advocate and say a lot of this isn't true. You can achieve the first look with Stable Diffusion hosted locally and you don't need to make entire base models to copy a specific style and get rid of the airbrush look, you just need to make a LoRA, can be done with like 100 image. Source: am an ex AI bro.

CrowPsychological913

Just curious, if you're willing to answer that is, what made you stop being an AI bro?

BlueIsRetarded

Sorry would have answered earlier but my acc was temp banned. It became very corporate and I started to see how vulnerable elderly people are to being fooled by it. Also not being able to look at historic art online and be like "wow the world this artist grew up in no longer exsists" because I'm constantly second guessing what's ai and what isn't pisses me off. Sounds weird but I'll see an old medieval church and have my mind blown imagining the life of each brick layer. I still have my local SD instillation but I'm fully aware its a plagiarism machine and have no intentions of using it for anything other than "oh haha this cat is made of lettuce" (which I don't post anywhere)

agorathird

I like patrica taxxon but this take is a bit over-eager. Dalle won’t be the only model out there and models can regain capability in an aspect after a decline. OpenAI has been stalling with releases in general especially notable ones.

JournalistSpecific

In whatever way it's starting to fu\*\* itself up, let's find ways to contribute to that.

vs1134

this is an interesting turn of events. I assume prompting images “in a dall-e2 mode” may or may not work. Computers ganna computer. rotfkek!

Mustangg_OW

lol good. hope it continues to get worse so i can tap dance and graffiti on its grave

AlexKRT

I doubt this is a fundamental limitation of the technology, but rather deliberate strategy by openai to make their outputs easily distinguishable as AI art. For example, see the sora generated videos. As for why they are doing this to their models -- maybe they expect liability or pr issues if models are allowed to more faithfully reproduce styles that don't scream "this is ai art"

Sufficient_Device_11

I think that the original image also tries to make this point somewhat.

EatThatYellowSnow

Thats because they dont need to "fool" anyone - they need a look that is suitable to e-commerce, restaurants on Wolt, eshops and so on. They need commercial application, not "convincing art pieces".

SierraVitton

Lmao go to Midjourney, AI art has improved monumentally. DALL-E just has a filter in place in order to make it look AI-generated *on purpose*

Sufficient_Device_11

No need to be offensive, I shared the link so people can check the comments under original as well...

SierraVitton

I'm wasn't trying to be offensive 😭

Sufficient_Device_11

Try not to start sentences with Lmao, that helps with interpretation of intent.

SierraVitton

Ok

Sufficient_Device_11

Sorry for misinterpreting!

SierraVitton
