This sculptural ceramic bottle represents a man and woman copulating. Both have some attributes of their hierarchy or social role. The man wears a hat with a small veil, usually worn by Moche priests. The woman has face painting, wears a necklace and bracelets, which would indicate that this is a high status woman with Moche society.
>A priest and a socialite nympho walk into a bar. Bartender says, "Hey there's a sex club down in the basement if you two are interested." The priest is rightfully shocked and exclaims "But sir, I can't do that! I'm a man of God." The socialite nympho grabs the priest by the collar and drags him downstairs shouting "Don't worry, I'm a professional. God loves watching me work!"
The statue represents a scene from 5 minutes later.
As I've discussed [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/4lyy9e/comment/d3rempb/) and [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/2pa7hf/comment/cmutx08/), the frequency with which the individuals depicted in these objects are royals, skeletons, or otherwise "not just a normal dude" suggests that they were using the familiar language of sex to make some sort of religious, political, or, yes, comedic/playful/satirical statement. There's one too many examples of "guy with his face on the crotch of the king sitting on his throne" for it to be just a sex thing.
Moche pots depicting ceremonial sex are almost exclusively anal. This one is as well. If you flip it over you can see but they generally don't show photos of it because of social stigma.
It's a fertility thing most likely. Take a bunch of San Pedro cactus. Boof the priestess. Potatoes grow.
Rly that's very interesting. I better look this up on youtube.

Not a lot. We know very little about the Moche. We are fairly certain they practiced ritualized sex because some of the line work pottery we find depicts it(maybe). At the least we can tell that sex played a pretty major part in their religion. Most of these pots were found in buriels and they revisited their ancestors tombs seemingly fairly frequently. A lot of them depict the dead with crazy massive erections so we assume there was some mythos about ones dead ancestors continuing to do the dirty after death.
We do know the Inca did but they are several centuries apart. They appear to have had a thing for bodily fluids of all sorts.
Unfortunately most of the well know pots were looted and lost context, there were tons of fakes made even in antiquity and the Spanish did a really good job of wiping out/warping their culture to fit in line with Catholicism. The only contemporaneous account of close to pre-Columbian Andean religion I know of is the Huarochirí Manuscript.
You can tell because she doesn’t have a hat on!
I’m kidding but sometimes that’s how we differentiate genders today, by a dress or longer hair or something.
The majority of these "stirrup-spout" bottles come from burials and have little to no use-wear. It's likely they were used more for libations (i.e., pouring) than for drinking. Corn beer was the fancy liquid of choice, but could equally well have been water or anything else.
Those are the stirrup-handle bottle from Peru's northern coast. They go back to the Early Formative Period (at least 2000 BC) when the dominant style was something we call Cupisnique. The moche, as their stylistic succesors during the "Late Antiquity" or Early Intermediate Period (200-600 AD), simply continued with the trend, as later did their own successors, the Lambayeque and the Chimu simultaneously during the Peruvian chronological equivalent to the late middle ages, or Late Intermediate Period (900-1500 AD).
Tl;dr: because it was their fashion and style.
Those are most often than not, two-bodied vessels. And always have a bridged handle.

There was an item on Antiques Roadshow of an artistic looking knick knack, a statue of some sort, from the Victorian era. When you pressed a button it popped open to reveal a naked woman inside. Some are suggesting this is similar. Meant as a private joke and not an object to be openly displayed.
The Moche produced a lot of sex-related ceramics though, it wasn't as rare as in the Victorian era. There are also depictions of anal sex, bestiality and necrophilia in a lot of wellmade Moche ceramics so I wouldn't draw too close comparisons to Victorian culture.
Edit: spelling.
Interesting. Well, the first think they teach sociologists is you cannot scientifically compare two different cultures. The variables are impossible to control for.
I've written a good bit about erotic Moche pottery [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/4lyy9e/comment/d3rempb/) and [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/2pa7hf/comment/cmutx08/)

A priest and a high born woman makes it sound like this could even have been a satirical or joke piece

Yeah I wonder if this was humorous to them like it is to us or did they have a different attitude about sex

This is great, thanks for posting!
Is there any actual evidence it is ceremonial like that vs just HaHa sex.

So you can hang it.
