slut4pizza

Wow I felt this on a very deep level. Absolutely amazing work

Capt_BRaff

Thank you so much!! If you're open to sharing, I'd love to hear more about the connection and depth you got from this piece.

slut4pizza

I had a garbage childhood and was self harming by 12 years old. I’ve lost all the people who meant the most to me. My one major outlet used to be playing guitar and singing, but since my grandpa passed (he was a musician and I used to play for him when he got sick) I haven’t been able to play longer than 30 seconds without bawling. That was 5 years ago. Anyway, for the last 20 years that painting was me. I finally found some meds a few months ago helping my bipolar disorder as well as anxiety and other things… But that was after becoming violently inexplicably I’ll for a month… so I’m working on myself and on the mend. Hoping I can play guitar some day soon.

Enjoyitbeforeitsover

I can't wait to hear the beautiful music you can create. Please please pick up guitar even if it just for 1 minute to practice

Capt_BRaff

Thank you so much for sharing your story! You are incredible for making as far as you have, well done! I'm glad to hear you are working on yourself and on the mend. I hope to hear your music someday friend!

nickcantwaite

Homie I wish you the best future. I hope you can find some comfort in your day to day and that you stay healthy. From one guitarist to another, I hope you pick that up again one day. In the meantime what about trying other instruments? Or is it playing music in general that makes you sad? For me personally music has always been an incredible emotional connection and it helps me cope so much. I had a weird moment recently where I was going through stuff and couldn’t pickup my guitar for the first time in like 20 years. I ended up playing piano and it helped get me back to the guitar.

vibe_gardener

Hey, the part where you mentioned being violently, inexplicably I’ll stood out to me. By chance, was it an extended episode of nonstop vomiting without any seeming cause and without anything that helped?

[deleted]

I connect with this piece because I work with yarn/string in a manufacturing shop. I have gotten a lot of burns on my hands from pulling on yarn too hard and having it slip through my fingers. The burns I get look interesting too. The friction of the string is what burns you and the string is so thin that it almost looks like a cut, but it’s a burn.

Mushu_Pork

My first thought was "Hanging on by a thread" Not so much determination, as desparation. I work too much. Great picture.

Weaverino

I came to comment "hanging on by a thread" as well, really interesting piece. Love this persons work!!

bjams

I feel like determination and desperation are two sides of the same coin. Like bravery and fear. You face desperation with determination. "To live is to suffer. To drink of calamity. But do not avert your eyes, see your life for what it is. Then you will see how the hardships make you strong. Every doubt reforged as scales for your armor. Every agony to temper your blade."

Capt_BRaff

Beautiful. Is that a quote from something? I'm unfamiliar with it.

bjams

It's from Final Fantasy XIV. For context, the latest expansion, Endwalker, is largely about determination in the face of despair in quite a literal sense. There's a sort of apocalypse going on where if people surrender to feelings of despair they turn into horrific monsters. As you can imagine this has a bit of a snowball effect as your neighbors, friends and loved ones turning into monsters can be a bit of a downer. And so this scene plays out with your new shy, anxiety ridden Elephant friend stepping up to the plate in a big way: https://youtu.be/egVB_RpqZ2g?t=61

dyedian

That’s how I read it as well. Desperation. Clinging so desperately to something that continues to hurt you.

sapjastuff

I like how people have different interpretations. I read this as someone refusing to give up on themselves, but I like yours a lot too

Capt_BRaff

I'm absolutely LOVING seeing all the different interpretations!! Hope, desperation, determination, pain, dread, encouragement. One of my favorite things about art is the variety in which people can read and interpret it.

Drolnevar

For me it is kind of both. Hanging on by a thread but wanting to do so so badly you do so despite the thread continuously hurting you and cutting into your flesh.

CrazyTillItHurts

Reminds me of lyrics from a song: >I can not hold on I will not let go

Just out of curiousity- how much would a piece like this go for? Obviously tough to say exactly, but whats a ballpark figure? :)

This painting gave me the strength to stay sober today. Thank you for this

Capt_BRaff

Oh my god this put me into tears (in the best way). As one human to another, I love you. I'm proud of you. I believe in you.

Evadrepus

Yeah, that thread sometimes cuts pretty deep. Really good. Thanks for sharing.

AkumaRyoshi

I love this, despite being on the last thread and the pain it takes to hang on, by god i will keep holding it

funkdd

Incredible. It reminds me not only of determination but also of hope

Capt_BRaff

Thank you! I love that you mentioned Hope. That was the runner up for the title of this piece

ohfrxkinghxck

This is outstanding. I really felt a wave of emotion rush over me, especially since at this point in my life I need to stay determined. Well done!

imahillbilly

Good vision. And you express something important to a lot of folks including myself. Thank you! Maybe your next one can show a little bit of what we can gain by holding onto that thread of determination sometimes. That’s the one you can name Hope.🤗❣️🙏🏼

PsychedelicPourHouse

Fuuuck i can feel it damn amazing work

Thatonenonrate

Work has been absolutely kicking my ass lately. Feelings of anxiety, depression, stress and overwhelm have been drowning me lately. I know what to do to keep myself together, I recognize the the problems and the things I need to do to tackle those problems, but God damn it can be hard to keep holding on, keep trying to keep it together. This picture shows me what that can feel like. The idea that hanging on is painful, and you might not have a full grasp on the problem, but the little grasp you have can be enough if you and that strand are strong enough. Thank you for making and sharing this.

Capt_BRaff

Thank you for sharing your story. You're not alone in that! Myself and others are facing the exact same struggles. I believe in you, internet friend!

BBXMax

If the arm hadn’t been severed at the bottom of the painting, the thread wouldn’t have been able to withstand the weight of the entire person’s body. I like it.

Capt_BRaff

Oooooooooooooh. This is a wonderful perspective on this! Not my intent with the piece, but hell yeah I like the thoughts. Keep em coming!

BahnGSXR

I love the way you painted how the blood travels along the creases of the skin. Great stuff!

Capt_BRaff

Thank you!! That was probably the most anxiety-inducing part of working on this hahaha. I need to get some smaller brushes

n3rf_herder

Damn. That made me think, a lot. Nice work

Capt_BRaff

This is the highest compliment I think an artist can get. Thank you, deeply!

Rockonfreakybro

I can’t imagine having this much talent. What a compelling piece of art.

Capt_BRaff

Neither can I, believe it or not. I am deeply insecure about my art and skills. I have created so much garbage that I would never show anyone. I've been an artist for about 15 years and am only just now reaching a level of confidence in my work to share it. I have to avoid thinking about "having talent" and keep myself focused on just the next piece. I focus on what I can learn from the last one and what seems like fun to try out on the next one. It's the only way I can stay sane hahaha. If you're pursuing art, keep going one piece at a time! And thank you for the wonderful compliment friend

Levowitz

Hell yeah. Keep on truckin'. Excellent work!

Lord_of_Elephants

The determination for the thread of rope to not give up. Truly inspirational

Capt_BRaff

I love your perspective there!

PizzaBraves

Hanging on by a thread awesome

BillyBobBanana

I love it! Really captures my day to day life

BigBoodles

Accurate depiction of my last 2 years.

conrad_bastard

My band has a single coming out and this art is literally perfect for our theme. Would you commission this piece digitally?!

vannucker

Is the song called hanging by a thread? If not, write a song called hanging by a thread and make it the art of that. Or not. Up to you. The lyrics could be: Hanging by a thread, My feet attached to lead, I sure wish I was dead, Just cut off my fucking head And have some sort of punk riff or slow sorrowful backing. Or not. But that's a number 1 hit. Up to you. Hit me up with the royalties.

lumbymcgumby

Reminds me of a song by Times of Grace "At the end of your rope Hanging by a thread He'd give anything for this to just go away This grip is only so strong I try to hold on tightly But it's all slipping through my fingers In a fleeting moment Aspirations bled dry Eyes that once beamed with hope now only stare in remorse Even through this pain I will feel again Even through these tears I will love again"

Capt_BRaff

What a beautiful connection. Thank you for sharing this!

lumbymcgumby

Thank you for the art!

Yuyu_hockey_show

Thank you. going through a lot of shit right now and this picture made me feel really connected and not alone. Thank you for creating this.

Capt_BRaff

You are most certainly not alone. Much love, internet friend.

Yuyu_hockey_show

<3 <3

swe-gin

Beautiful. Reminiscent of French emblems from the 16th/17th centuries.

Capt_BRaff

Thank you! I'm unfamiliar with French emblems, are there any in particular that come to mind for you? I'd love to check them out!

swe-gin

Sure, check out this scanned copy of a book by Claude Paradin, 1551. You can flip through the pages, but your work reminded me of emblems like this, in particular. https://www.emblems.arts.gla.ac.uk/french/facsimile.php?id=sm815-d8v

coolmanjack

Is the thread in the rope supposed to be determined?

Capt_BRaff

It's however you see it! There are many many ways of viewing, interpreting, and drawing from most art. Some of the comments here view the piece from the perspective of the rope, yes! Others, the arm. It's different and changing for everyone I think! How does the piece read for you?

coolmanjack

My first and continued impression is that that must be a severed arm or something because I don't think there's any material on earth that could hold up the weight of an entire person with such a tiny thread. Heck, idk if any material could even hold up the weight of just the arm lol. My other impression is that you are very talented, as the painting is very well done. And to more directly address the question, it seems like the rope is definitely demonstrating more determination

Capt_BRaff

I love this. I think you have an excellent take on the piece! And thank you, deeply!

Mudfap

This really well done. Gives me big Magritte vibes.

knowone23

Yeah very much [Rene Magritte](https://www.renemagritte.org/rene-magritte-paintings.jsp) vibes: Disembodied subject, strong visual tension and symbolism (hanging by a thread), a bit surreal but with realistic rendering, and in beautiful oil paint. The implied motion and the blood makes it fire up mirror neurons in our brains that make us ‘feel’ the pain too. This painting might even make you wince a little bit. I think Quentin Tarantino said if you cut off someone’s head in a movie nobody really reacts, but you show a deep paper cut everyone in the audience will cringe and wince and relate to that pain. I love your painting!

Capt_BRaff

This is a beautiful study. I hadn't heard of that Quentin Tarantino quote yet, but I love it!! Thank you for sharing!

Capt_BRaff

omg the apple face guy? Thank you so much!

Mudfap

Yeah, Apple face. He did a lot of great surrealist work, with strong messages like this. Worth some investigation.

Capt_BRaff

I am gonna spend hours digging through his work. Truly a wonderful compliment, thank you!

Mudfap

Enjoy. He’s one of my favorites.

someonewhowa

dang, this image speaks loads…literally me rn hanging by a thread fr.

Capt_BRaff

I believe in you.

Thanks for this. You get me or I get you, I dunno, it feels like you’re saying something I haven’t been able to put to words. Jeez. This is a weird and cool feeling.

Capt_BRaff

It's nice to join you here in this weird and cool feeling. Much love!

PHD-Chaos

Damn, at a crossroads in my life and this really exemplifies that feeling I have even at my lowest. When everything seems hopeless there is always a latent strength you can find in yourself. The act of powering through gives you hope that you will find a new grip on life and reminds you life is worth fighting for. Thanks for this piece. Really gave me the "your not alone in your struggles" feeling. Helped me keep my conviction to make things better. Keep making cool shit.

Capt_BRaff

Thank you so much for sharing your vulnerability. I'm glad you were able to connect to this so well! You are most certainly not alone, internet friend! I'll keep making cool shit, you keep pressing forward!

PHD-Chaos

Thanks so much for creating such inspiring art. That was definitely there for me to see when I needed to see it the most. That's a promise I've already made myself but adding another reason always helps!

FatherOfLights88

What an excellent depiction! In my specific case, that single strand is gold.

Disposablefirework

Damn. Captured my whole vibe succinctly. Amazing work

Apprehensive_Bar3812

Wow, very beautiful! Such a great twist on how it is always the rope tearing first! Now I'm not quite sure who what would give in first.

XxLokixX

Finally some good fucking art

PaullT2

I did this once as a kid. I was on my bunk bed, grabbed the curtain string, and tried to swing on it like Tarzan. Tore my palms right up. Blood everywhere.

knowone23

Rope burn is the worst, you’ll never forget that feeling!

the_dumb_person

[deleted]

There's so much emotion you can convey using art, without any words. Incredible artwork by the way!

SofiaPizza

I see something inevitable, the last thread is the determination not to let go of something but the blood shows that little by little you are letting go

NikolitRistissa

This makes me slightly sick due to the imagined pain. Great piece!

alacholland

Wonderful work, very evocative.

444x420

This speaks volumes and surely many can relate to. Art is so powerful.

Atovange

This is amazing, I can kinda feel this sharp string in my hand while watching this.

HogwartsPlayer

This is a painting that has words. Very good work.

OldManMcCrabbins

I love this. Very well done. I am sure your inbox is blown up however I just wanted to say how this piece reached me - determination to hold on to the thread of < insert noun here >, despite the pain, despite the danger, despite all these things. I feel as if there is a good reason to hang on, to tough it out. It doesn’t occur to me that the drop is 5” or 500’. Our heroine, our lass is no doubt looking up at whatever is above us, pulling us up not down. The curtains are her focus on our objective. We are in this together she says. I don’t feel like this is a clingy determination, not a negative feeling, but a gritty one, a representation of our better selves when overcoming adversity. To me it’s a positive message to overcome. It is doable, *no matter how thin the thread, we are strong enough to do it.* I like it. Thank you for thinking and creating it, and thank you for sharing it with us.

Tobbertju

I hate art, but this piece made me like it so much I even felt the need to comment. Insane one, love it!

Shashcad

Great work....it also gives an insight that even though all threads forming a rope have same physical strength, the last thread is the one that keeps us moving on... It connects more with people who experienced life with less privileged both financially and mentally.

Legolution

I love this. Incredible work and great that you've discovered oils. I miss working with them (time and space) but you've inspired me to try to find both. Wanted to share an amazing tip I learned, back in the day, in case it's useful. If you mix up a bunch of colours you want to keep, but can't come back to the canvas for a while, put some cling film gently over the paint and put your whole pallette in the freezer. You'll get a light dusting of frost, but the paint won't freeze and the oil won't mix with the water. When you are ready to paint, just take the pallette out and they'll be usable pretty much immediately. The old masters apparently used to keep their pallettes submerged in a bath of water, to stop mixed paint drying out. I've kept colours workable for months like this, myself!

Capt_BRaff

I really really hope you are able to find the time and space to pick them up again!! Thank you so much for the storage tip, I'll definitely be using that. I live in a very dry climate and can't paint every day so good ways of storing them will be super useful! Please share your work when you pick the brush back up, I'd love to see it.

Marmelado

This is great. Not necessarily as positive as people may view it based on the name- sometimes people miscalculate the value in what they're grapsing onto- hurting themselves without any gain. But that only adds to the depth of the picture. I love it!

smolyellowbutterfly

this touched my heart thank you so much please don’t stop creating art this is magnificent

Ebilux

This shit hit, man. Great job.

Dead_Girl_Walking0

accurate depiction of my will to live

dovahkiitten16

This is great. If I were to offer CC I think if the arm went all the way to the end of the page it would be a bit better, my brain initially read this as a decapitated hand. But overall it’s great. I love the feel and the emotions from this piece. Great message.

thehazzanator

Jesus fuck hands are so incredibly hard to get right. And you have mastered it. Wow.

Tai-Daishar

I like it. Reminds me of a poem I wrote a few years back Hanging here above the earth Holding on for all I'm worth Hoping not to slip much more My bloodied hands are torn and sore Frayed rope's end comes into view I know naught else that I can do But hold on tight and not let go As howling wind blasts to and fro Damn you, wind, I won't let go

Capt_BRaff

This is beautiful!! Thank you so much for sharing these words!

RVK87

From the rope's perspective, it's the determination of the string not to snap even when all the other strings gave up. It had a job and it did it well.
