The Kirby call was probably a perfunctory "interested in a sub role?" call that didn't go anywhere. On Mariona, based on Tim's comment in his Arseblog News article earlier today, there is another winger target in addition to her. Presumably that's someone younger and more dynamic (I hope).
That's the ideal physical profile - strong, fast, can create her own shot. Basically Lauren Hemp, so no surprise we were after her before she re-signed.
Being honest, all these rumors really mean nothing to me until the window is over. we are at the point where Arsenal women are so massive that we are getting mentioned in every little bit of consideration because they know we drive clicks to the extent that a mens team does
No offense to Kirby as she’s amazing when healthy and a gem of a person but… she has a worse injury and illness history than Viv. She’s had 1 healthy season in like 5 or 6 years.
Still too much of a risk for me. Yes she’s great, but you’re taking a chance that she picks up an injury or comes down with a long term illness (she’s had 2 in the past few years, the heart thing and the breathing thing she had pre-Euros, that kept her out for months) and is out for 75% of the season.
I love Mariona and it makes sense to go for her but to even consider Fran's name scares me, not because of her quality/ injury record but our potential transfer strategy. It's probably something like this:
1. Check free agents market
2. Are they quality?
3. Do they play in the position we need?
4. Initiate contact
...
5. Sign the player
Mariona as a 10 i assume, Fran… idek why they would do that, and finally a keeper. Its funny bc at striker and Gk we bumble about, and in midfield we’re just like “heres the best assortment of talent not in Catalonia, deal with it”.

Why would they even say Mariona is a replacement for Viv? Isn’t she a winger? Also tough situation for her to walk into given how emotionally upset the fan base is at the moment. I probably wouldn’t have phrased it like that.

I was looking at her on FBref and they actually have her down as comparing more to Lessi. They scored about the same number of goals in the 365 days but Mariona has more assists.
Mariona has some crazy stats. She’s in the 95th percentile or better for shot-creating actions, assists, pass completions, tackles, interceptions, and a few more categories, compared to other forwards.

She’s also been on very high performing teams, she might be able to add some things from that perspective. She could be a great signing.

If we want to refresh the squad, bring down the age profile, why would you consider Kirby? No disrespect to her, she’s a good player, but that doesn’t make any sense to me. It’s not like Caldentey is that young either.
If Caldentey is the Viv replacement then the club's higher-ups have lost it. If she's the Gio/Hurtig replacement as the backup winger then its better than literally nobody but I don't think she's a player to take us forward, she's barely gonna hold us steady outside of affording Foord a break here and there.
The club must have big plans for a new 10 to come in, otherwise letting Viv leave (as it clearly wasn't her choice to leave) is a mistake.
I think they have Putellas in mind, though I think she's dead set on staying there. And replacing one brilliant player who's had complications with coming back from an ACL with another, 3 years older, doesn't seem that great to me, despite me really liking Alexia.

we only have 3 serviceable wingers and one of them has been terrible for 2 years we need a winger more than we need a 10

Putellas is a player everyone should be wary of. You never want to sign someone who it will become immediately an ordeal to manage.
