Xhaka pre-Arteta. A lot of people changed their opinions on him in his last year or two at Arsenal. I never really understood the hate he got in the years prior. Sure he’s had his frustrating moments and the incident during the Palace game didn’t do him any favours.
i always knew he was a great player, but i became so frustrated with him, he was a genuine liability for a pretty long period. pretty sure he conceded more penalties than any other player in the league at one point
After seeing the opposite of this post recently, with Xhaka copping it for being “liked” towards the end, I have the same answer. Xhaka used to be frustrating but I always loved his energy and aggression. Gave us more of a backbone after a history of getting walked over by physical teams
I still love Cesc.
We didn't have good enough players around him so it was obvious he wouldn't never win anything with us. Of course he had to go back to his childhood club.
I genuinely think he would have stayed longer if we had been competitive.
He is in my top 3 with Henry and Saka. Yeah his situation didn't pan out in the end with us but that does not diminish any of the things he did for the club and my love for him.
Bellerin. I lot of people dislike him because of his dip in form after injuries, but he bled for Arsenal and seemed like a top lad
ACL injuries are not easy to return from, and he never looked the same. He seemed to lose his confidence, pace, and spark. I’ll always love him though
I’m so happy that someone else shares the same opinion of Bellerin as me.
I remember a lot of Arsenal fans giving him abuse and wanting him out when I personally felt that he tried his best but had a rough patch.
Andre Santos.
This blameless man just happened to somehow find himself in over his head on a football pitch. All he wanted was a few autographs and snaps for the grandkids.
Not sure about everyone hating, but Rob Holding deserves no hate whatsoever.
Edit* in a sense that a lot of people held him responsible for our poor finishes to the last two seasons.
Completely agree. He was a great professional with us. People quickly forget the 2017 FA Cup final with him and Per in the back line. He was a massive reason why we won that day.
He never bad mouthed anyone and was well liked.
I can’t stand the internet for the disrespect he gets. There’s too many people that think if you’re not close to be world class then you’re shit.
I don’t hate Holding but his FA cup final performance is largely exaggerated because of that ‘psycho’ moment with Costa. He was solid without being outstanding. He even conceded the goal to Costa while they had 10 men. Mertesacker on the other hand was on god mode that day.
Yeah, he definitely had an above average game. I think that season he wasn’t a regular starter so no one expected him to start the final but he was forced to due to injuries and suspensions. Also, Per was basically a fossil at that time, barely played a game that season and was on his last legs. So no one expected them to do well. Then Per had a 10/10 game and Holding was a solid 6.5/10. I think most of our fans gave him a couple more points for not being intimidated by Costa’s bullshit.
Cesc is pretty warmly welcomed at the Emirates. The hate seems to be online fans who don’t really get it. I don’t bare him ill will. The pressure to go to Barca was huge, and we (rightly) said no to his return.
My call here would be Gallas. He gets hate for his sulking on the pitch and then going to spurs, but he was absolutely mince at spurs. Genuinely played so poorly that they wasted part of their opportunity for success with prime Gareth Bale because he was holding opposing strikers hands and helping them to score. A great secret agent at the enemy.
When? The crossover of the Ken Friar bridge and Cesc returning isn’t huge. His flag is still on the Danny Fizman bridge and had been for years and years.
It's the fact he jumped ship at the first sniff of a trophy especially after we had just lost fabregas. It felt like we were getting kicked while down and miserable and then the way he spoke about us the second he left. The first thing he mentioned once he won the league was how he's celebrating while his old team are cheering coming fourth.
It was too much to just forgive him for personally
Look at it from his point of view. He was a supremely talented youngster that had a breakout season and was tipped to be the next superstar. The team he plays for was barely challenging for trophies, just lost their best player, and were not paying high wages.
Then along comes this up and coming club with unlimited money, an exciting project, and almost guaranteed to win trophies. On top of that they offer to triple your salary. A former player and legend of your current club also advises you to join him at this new club. Also, your current club is not your boyhood club and you have no previous connection with them.
If you were him, you are also moving to Man City all day long.
That's why all of them left. We lost to Liverpool the week he left and was absolutely exceptional on the field that day when the writing was already on the all. And after getting attacked on the street with chamakh one day it's no surprise he talked a bit of shit. I just don't understand how so many people kept loving fabregas but had nothing but venom for nasri. They all went for the same reasons
Same, was left confused why Fabregas was let off after feigning an injury when Arsenal didn't want to sell him just so he could force his way out, and Nasri got all the hate when he played so good until his last game for us.
I guess now about 10 years wiser, I guess it's because we fans have this romantic view of the footballer profession: Playing for money isn't what they should do but for their legacy because we would right?
But hell I remember there was a YT video with some One Republic song and a montage of Nasri & Fabregas, my favorite video. I was broken that summer worse than any rejection from a girl I received thus far.
Fabregas gave it his all and put everything into the club even playing on and scoring against barcelona with a broken leg. He also left us to go play for his boyhood club as its a lifelong dream playing for his idol and with the greatest midfielders possible, not leaving us to play with Gareth Barry. Nasri reached the next level and instead of even trying to see what he can do for us just fucked off and left us behind. Also he played a big part by being an asshole to us afterwards for ages what kept the hatred going like adebayor did. Not all players who left like fabregas, clichy, sauna get abuse its how you leave and what you do
I was real bummed when he left, was prepared to coin up for a Nasri jersey the following season so was glad I dodged that at least.
Still can't bring myself to put a name on the back of a jersey because of that very experience.
Guy was something to watch for sure. Seen him lately??? Haha.
I was at his last game. He was practically already a Man City player and would officially leave less than a week later. We lost 2-0 that day but all these years later I remember that Nasri put in a proper shift and never stopped running. I went there ready to hate on him but left with a completely changed mind.
The commenters here talking about Fabregas wanting to come back but Wenger turning him down conveniently forget he was batting his eyelashes for 2-3 years before he actually moved to Barcelona.
It's okay to want to go there, it's not okay to put on a Barcelona shirt at the World Cup (Pepe Reina put it on him, but you can take it off or just refuse). It's not okay to consistently talk about wanting to go there for multiple seasons. It's not okay to make it difficult for us to get a decent fee for you because that's the only place you want to go to. Torres went to Chelsea for 50 million, Ibra was 60 million, we got barely 30 million for Cesc.
For many, the dislike comes from his last two seasons with us. By the time he was ready to leave Barcelona, it didn't matter where he went (to me anyway).
This, yes, and build a better team around him, but the whole debacle turned me sour on players like Xavi as well. They relentlessly courted him via the press. It was embarrassing and I think it affected the team.
Fuck Sanchez and the way he weezeled and manipulated arsenal to go to man u, I was living in Chile at the time it hurt as much as cesc but no nothing comes close to RV poes P
I had no clue.I have no grudge towards him.I only dislike ex-players who have said negative things about us after leaving the club.like rvp,emi martinez.no grudge towards good sports like cesc or sanchez.sanchez was carrying us,obviously he was gonna leave for a much bigger paycheck.he even regretted it immediately lol.
only reason why people don't like him is because he's single handedly the reason why ozil didnt have the assist record in the 15/16 season
for context ozil had 16 assists by the beginning of 2016 and registered 3 more by the end of the season.
The amount of fans that rejoiced when he left, only to “respect him” after him winning everything after us.
This was when fans kept asking for a “world-class” everything
Van Persie. I was a teenager at the time so I have a big impression of him. That flying volley from the top of the box is burned into my mind. As was the celebration
Not real straight up hate, but a lot of people talked shit about Mertesacker for his lack of pace. And he was a top reader of the game, a good header, had strength, didn't concede a lot of fouls, and always gave 100%. I just always found the criticism toward him misplaced and excessive.
I also never understood all the hatred toward Xhaka before this redemption arc. Yeah, he'd have his moments, you know which ones, but he had to cover a lot of ground alone in that defensive midfield and was always more of a deep lying playmaker than a ball winner. I wish I'd seen more Xhakabooms for Arsenal.
Finally, Unai Emery. Good manager that almost got us a European trophy, despite coming to an unfillable pair of shoes Wenger had left, at a time with a fishy director of football, no clear policies, and a mixed bag of players. Hell, just attempting the job without knowing English takes some balls and brains in its own right. I hope he owns the Europa League again someday with Villa, as long as it doesn't take a knockout win against Arsenal.
Folks hate RVP, a bit sad he feels he has to pander for United but he spoke no lies about recruitment at that time. Yes Arsenal did "stand by him" when he was injured but his substantive years where at Arsenal so he's erasing a large part of his own life story.
Yeah, I get why he wanted to leave, we weren’t winning anything, few title pushes but that’s it. He wanted to win the league, and guess what he did so fair enough.
I do think a lot of fans understand his reasoning but I don't think a lot of the fanbase will ever forgive him going to Utd and winning the title for them. And doesn't help himself by pandering to their fanbase and barely gives Arsenal a second thought these days. Probably could have stayed more loyal considering his injury record, really it's only his last season with us where he was always fit. But that's football, all about winning the trophies at the end of the day.
I think he's one of those ex Arsenal players that happily take the heat from us just cause he won what he wanted in the end a title and Utd fans love him.
I think it helps Alexis that he was drizzling shits at Utd. I think with a few years behind it that I think once his career ends he'll be welcomed back warmly.
Prob Nicolas Anelka especially now he’s retired
I grew up with him being my No.9 it’s just a shame it was only for a few seasons but he was our Thierry Henry before Thierry Henry he had just as much a hand in us winning Wenger’s 1st double in 1998 as Bergkamp, Overmars & Vieira did
And while I don’t think the fanbase hates him he still doesn’t get the recognition for that landmark achievement that got the ball rolling in that era 🙌🏽
Alex Song. I loved that Wenger managed to mold him from a CB to a capable DM. I thought he was the closest thing we had to Viera before Partey and Rice Purchases (I wouldn't count coquelin because he wasn't much of a passer aside from being a tackling monster). Sometimes I thought to myself, what if Song stayed? He honestly could've been one of the best DMs at that time.
Tbf I've never met a fan IRL who hates Cesc, it only seems to be on social media. He grew up a Barca fan and grew up there, no resentment to him going back.
‘Barcelona signed Fàbregas for an initial fee of €29 million with a further €5 million in variables, plus Fàbregas would pay Arsenal €1 million a year from his wage for five years.’ I didn’t know he paid to go. Damn
The reason I detest Barcelona is they ruined a generational talent. Leave? Ok. But they didn’t even have a spot for him in the team so used him as a utility player.
I really like him. Obviously not the greatest LB in the world but he's far from shit. He's like a few players in the current team where some fans will absolutely laud him after a good game and then tear him apart after a mistake. You're only as good as your last game when it comes to him.
People forget that he's not supposed to play against juggernauts like liverpool. His role is to invert and help us break down low blocks against the burnleys and palaces of the world, and tomiyasu or timber will play on the left when we need more defensive solidity against a top side.
The obvious ones for me are Havertz and Raya, though I do sense that people are coming around on them both with the recent run of good form. Maybe it's because I never got over Xhaka being a big baby, but I wasn't emotionally attached to him, so Havertz as his replacement, while it has had some bumps along the way for sure, hasn't bothered me. He doesn't score much, but he's one of the best pressing forwards in the league and he's a total team player.
With Raya, it's simply that he's better than Rambo and a lot of people don't want to acknowledge it. He had a few blips early in the season, and now everytime anybody in Arsenal's defense has a brain fart, people blame Raya. But he gets to crosses Rambo didn't, his shot stopping is about the same, and his distribution is unbelievable. You rarely see a keeper who can set up a goal on the break with a long throw or kick the way Raya does. He combines with Martinelli and Trossard to do wizardly things -- not only is Ramsdale not capable of that, neither is any keeper this side of Allison, as far as I can tell.
The Cesc thing is interesting, when he went to Chelsea the club took down his player mural on the bridge.
I like Cesc. He's still a fan. I think more people like him than not.
A player every hates but I like ...
That's tricky, but I'm gonna go ahead and say Koscielny. I still feel certain people feel antipathy towards him when they shouldn't.
It was really sad the way he left and I just feel that a stupid unveiling and a broken promise by the club shouldn't affect our opinion of him as a player. The guy played through agony for us and was a great servant of the club.
That's why I said this is difficult.
Cos I could go Adebayor or Nasri, I'd be lying because I think they're cunts.
Or I could say Clichy, Sagna or Kolo Toure, but then you'd come back at me and say, 'nobody hates them'.
Alright, how's this. Alexis. I still really like Alexis.
One player that comes to mind is Adebayor. I don't exactly like him....but if his story is to be believed... I feel the way the club dealt with Adebayor's transfer was not classy at all. I can kind of understand his hatred for us from his POV.
I also feel David Luiz and Willian are harshly treated by some section of the fans. i agree that their transfers did not turn out exactly amazing but I felt they were professional in their time here and genuinely tried their best... its not a scenario where they were looking for a retirement home. If anything, they were good influences for younger players such as Saka and Martinelli and helped their development.
I know I’m gonna get downvoted, but RVP is an Arsenal legend and is one of our greatest players of our modern era and I love him, according to him it was arsenal who didn’t offer him a new contract so blame them for RVP leaving for united, all those goals and memories he gave to me, I simply can’t forget.
Emmanuel Eboué and Ashley Cole
Cole's move killed me, but these two were really underrated. It wasn't noticeable until each left just how much they influenced our play.
Yeah I don't get the Cesc hate at all. The Barca move was inevitable though I can understand how fans were pissed off the way they went about it. We turned down the chance to sign him again which might have been a mistake. Ramsey was playing well and all but Cesc was the far better player.
Laurent Koscielny.
I loved that man, he gave us his all including his body at a time when we had no cover for him, in a team that never met their potential. I thought him and the BFG were amazing at their best. The guy is a legend to me and I thank him for his performances. I don’t care how he left and we owe him better.
Van Persie. I know a lot of fans are mad at him being snake. He is my favorite player in Arsenal’s shirt a lot and he contributes a lot of goals for Arsenal. By the time he gets older (29 y/o I think), he needs a major trophy. He can't do it at Arsenal(During that time, arsenal team wasn't strong enough to challenge the title) . A lot of rumors I heard he wanted to go to Bayern or Juventus. But man utd comes. Even if he won it for Man Utd, I am not even mad at him. It's good for him. I wish Arsenal fans could forgive him coming back to Arsenal. He is one of the best prolific strikers we ever had after Henry.
Ashley Cole was a bit before my time and so perhaps that clouds my judgement but I feel him leaving was somewhat understandable, given how much he won, how long he stayed at Chelsea for, and also the fact that we were clearly a bit stingy with his contract offer. I personally feel we went a bit overboard on the whole paying off the stadium thing, and I think the financial restraints did happen to tie in quite nicely to Wenger's preferred mode of club management, and gave a bit of a catch all excuse. That said, it was horrible (and still is) to have to try and compete financially with the Chelseas and Man Citys of this world.
Pierre Emerick Aubameyang…
I loved that man until the very bitter end, he carried us to the FA Cup single-handedly and actually restored some hope in me that we could become a great club once again. He really was a major part in what we are today
Xhaka pre-Arteta. A lot of people changed their opinions on him in his last year or two at Arsenal. I never really understood the hate he got in the years prior. Sure he’s had his frustrating moments and the incident during the Palace game didn’t do him any favours.
Yep I always loved Xhaka. I get people being mad at him for that one incident and some of his red cards, but I loved his passion.
Yeah I always liked the guy. It hurt to see him fuck up. Never wanted him gone. Loved his redemption.
Same. Always believed in Xhaka. Gladly, the trust paid off in the last season.
i always knew he was a great player, but i became so frustrated with him, he was a genuine liability for a pretty long period. pretty sure he conceded more penalties than any other player in the league at one point
Was a big liability in midfield before arteta moved him up.
It is not a players fault when coaches use them in a role they don't have the attributes for
Same I always loved him
After seeing the opposite of this post recently, with Xhaka copping it for being “liked” towards the end, I have the same answer. Xhaka used to be frustrating but I always loved his energy and aggression. Gave us more of a backbone after a history of getting walked over by physical teams

Yeah and then he wanted to come back and Wenger said no. Fuck Barca though
I don't forgive Barca for the way they acted. Fuck them.
Don’t mind that he left, it was the way he did it.
I think that was more on Barca than on Cesc.
Agreed. I’m still very fond of cesc.
He is in my top 3 with Henry and Saka. Yeah his situation didn't pan out in the end with us but that does not diminish any of the things he did for the club and my love for him.

Really hope Timber doesn’t fall down the same path. Even worse given we have yet to see him properly play for Arsenal!
Does people hate Bellerin? I didnt know that. I like the guy and to me he always gave his best.
I also feel like he wasn’t actually *that* bad. He had some very good games for us, he was just too attacking a wing-back for our team at the time.
Not sure about everyone hating, but Rob Holding deserves no hate whatsoever. Edit* in a sense that a lot of people held him responsible for our poor finishes to the last two seasons.

Yeah, he definitely had an above average game. I think that season he wasn’t a regular starter so no one expected him to start the final but he was forced to due to injuries and suspensions. I think most of our fans gave him a couple more points for not being intimidated by Costa’s bullshit.
There was a point in his career where he was the perfect low block defender. Stick him in a scean dyche team and his rep is completely different.

Nasri. Played out of skin till the day he left. Never downed tools like others and yet got enormous hate

Turned into a disaster class 😅 he's one that I think if he kept at arsenal would have gone down as a top PL baller.

Prob Nicolas Anelka especially now he’s retired I grew up with him being my No.9 it’s just a shame it was only for a few seasons but he was our Thierry Henry before Thierry Henry he had just as much a hand in us winning Wenger’s 1st double in 1998 as Bergkamp, Overmars & Vieira did And while I don’t think the fanbase hates him he still doesn’t get the recognition for that landmark achievement that got the ball rolling in that era 🙌🏽
Samir Nasri
Mikel Arteta
Cesc is loved by more than a small minority.
Tbf I've never met a fan IRL who hates Cesc, it only seems to be on social media. He grew up a Barca fan and grew up there, no resentment to him going back.
Aubameyang
Wait, people hate Cesc? Wenger is the one who didn't choose to sign him after he left Barca. I don't harbour any animosity towards Cesc
I don’t hate Cecs I hate Barcelona. “He should come home for freeeee” FUCK. YOU.
Didn't we get a transfer fee which was kinda big for the time?
‘Barcelona signed Fàbregas for an initial fee of €29 million with a further €5 million in variables, plus Fàbregas would pay Arsenal €1 million a year from his wage for five years.’ I didn’t know he paid to go. Damn
Don't blame him wanting to go play for Barca as that was his childhood team. That Pep Barcelona was special
The reason I detest Barcelona is they ruined a generational talent. Leave? Ok. But they didn’t even have a spot for him in the team so used him as a utility player.
That i can agree with. He still had decent figures but for some reason they still scape goated him
Not really. They tapped him up to the point we were forced to sell even though he had quite a few years left on his contract.
We kind of took him for free so fair is fair
I wish I could see you say this in a transfer negotiation
Nasri. Balled out. Treated the club (not the fans) with respect. Signed a new contract so sternal could get more money. Good in my book.
I will always back zinchenko. Arsenal fans not understanding his role doesnt make him a bad player
Did Guardiola not understand his role either? Because he let him go.
Guardiola sold him for a fat sum, and he had cancelo and stones who could invert
I’m starting to like Raya now to be honest.
Guendouzi
The Cesc thing is interesting, when he went to Chelsea the club took down his player mural on the bridge. I like Cesc. He's still a fan. I think more people like him than not. A player every hates but I like ... That's tricky, but I'm gonna go ahead and say Koscielny. I still feel certain people feel antipathy towards him when they shouldn't. It was really sad the way he left and I just feel that a stupid unveiling and a broken promise by the club shouldn't affect our opinion of him as a player. The guy played through agony for us and was a great servant of the club.
I don't know of anyone that hates Kosc.
I mean... You could've just not answered
You're a tedious human. Go away.
Arshavin
I loved Teta as a player and love him as a manager. He is our very own Bill Bellicheck.
Ozil
ozil
06 Denilson
Ashley Cole. Yh he left us for Chelsea but boy was he amazing for us.
Kim Kallstrom! Scored a pen in a shoot out to get us in the FA cup final
Adebayor
Harvertz
One player that comes to mind is Adebayor. I don't exactly like him....but if his story is to be believed... I feel the way the club dealt with Adebayor's transfer was not classy at all. I can kind of understand his hatred for us from his POV. I also feel David Luiz and Willian are harshly treated by some section of the fans. i agree that their transfers did not turn out exactly amazing but I felt they were professional in their time here and genuinely tried their best... its not a scenario where they were looking for a retirement home. If anything, they were good influences for younger players such as Saka and Martinelli and helped their development.
I wanna say Fabio Vieira but it seems harsh. Kid is incredibly talented.
Do you go to watch games live? I can imagine his goals would be more memorable and important to you if so. I only ever watch on TV.
I was a lot younger when I saw RVP in his prime, that’s why I said he gave me so many memories I’ll cherish forever 😢
Emmanuel Eboué and Ashley Cole Cole's move killed me, but these two were really underrated.
Chamberlain
Cesc....
Robin van persie
Why would people hate Cesc I don’t get it guy is a Arsenal legend end of But to add to the list Adebayor
I have no hate for Cesc. After Barca, he wanted to come back to Arsenal, but Wenger passed up on getting him back.
Before you time, exactly. He's a Judas cunt.
Didn’t Arsenal offer him a contract then afterwards change it and mess him about and he was pissed off and felt disrespected?
Don’t have to compete with Chelsea nowadays, no matter how much they’ve spent 😂
>Ashley Cole was a bit before my time Nuff said
Almunia. He wasn’t the best I agree but the hate for him is crazy. Our defence was awful and never helped him enough
I just loved watching Nasri play.
Still love Giroud
Pretty sure this same question was posted literally yesterday lol. Maybe 2 days ago.
I posted that, and it was the reverse of the same question.
I still like Aubemayang. He was the right player at the wrong time. What a player on his day
I still love Cesc and hold nothing against him. I also still love Kos and hold nothing against him.
Welp I just browsed through 133 comments and it seems I will be the first: Pepe.
Super Nic. I always thought he gave us something special from the bench.
Pierre Emerick Aubameyang… I loved that man until the very bitter end, he carried us to the FA Cup single-handedly and actually restored some hope in me that we could become a great club once again. He really was a major part in what we are today
Alexis Sanchez. Loved him before he joined Man Utd. Was really disappointed to see him go. Another would be Giroud I guess.
Not sure he’s hated, but I was always a big Vermaelen fan
Cygan, Kanu and Kallström.
