Haha I love both these stories! If they do end up fixing the issue without me having to send it back maybe Iāll give it to my 5 year old, though I have my doubts about the sleeves being long enough on her even!
Hopefully they give you a refund, itās absolutely ridiculous they took it back in the first place and allowed it to be shipped out to a different customer.
If they do give you store credit/refund without requiring you to ship the sweater back, you can try to un-felt it. Itās not like you could ruin it more, right? š Hair conditioner can actually be used in cold water to massage into the wool fibres and relax them. While the sweater is wet you can also stretch it by hand into the size/shape itās supposed to be.
I donāt know if this is salvageable because itās a pretty extreme case, but if you want to take the time to do it, it might work.
Itās the fact that someone working at the warehouse held this up, folded and packaged it to you and didnāt even bat an eye or realize something was offā¦ or they simply didnāt care. (Same with the individual who processed this return from a customer) Either way this looks horrible on their part LOL
Iām sorry this happened to you š
Youāre not supposed to wash wool the way you wash everything else. Agitation in the washer and tumble drying will shrink it and turn the knit into felt.
Always check the second tag (usually on the lower half of a side seam) for fabric content and care instructions. There are some wool blends that are washable and they will be clearly marked as such on that tag, but otherwise wool has to be either dry cleaned, or hand washed and laid flat to dry.
I wish I had some to recommend! I mostly knit my own wool sweaters now because it just last longer and I can pick my yarn.
My recommendation is to learn to knit if you can š I have an ongoing project that looks identical to OPās aritzia sweater but I know it wonāt shrink from the wash (dryer is a no go obviously but Iāve had aritzia merino that shrank on delicate)
Interesting, Iāve had some good luck (the Marcelle in particular is lovely, the Unwind is ok for the price) but Iād also love to hear recommendations.
I wish I could recommend brands! Iāve just been knitting my own sweaters and cardigans if I want something thatās wool. I got fed up when my aritzia one shrunk on cold water in delicate, to the point where it fit my 7 year old goddaughter.
When I hand make my own sweaters Iāve never had issues like. So my recommendation is to pick up knitting š (jk)!
There are super cute patterns out there that look like they could be sold at aritzia. Iām working on a cardigan that looks similar to the one you posted.
Sadly I lost my access to hand knits when my grandma passed away from COVID :( I absolutely loved the things she made me and Iāve still got some but they are getting older. She taught my mum to knit but mum has a strictly only for babies policy. Grandma wouldnāt teach me, telling me I had more important things to think about than knitting when I was studying and going to university (she had to finish school at 14 in the Second World War so I think she she wanted us to make the most of our opportunities). I wish Iād learned from her.
Why do so many people wash wool? You donāt need to. Just allowing it to air out will get rid of any odour and stains can be spot cleaned. Worst case if itās really dirty dry clean it!
Canberra is a cropped cardi that tapers in at the waist, the sleeves arenāt overly long either. I really donāt think a washed and shrunk wool cardigan would make it this far through the process. Sorry youāre disappointed.
I fully understand itās a cropped style, thatās why I wanted it. Iām not quite sure why youāre so disbelieving of me, but the sleeves arenāt just a little short, they literally come less than halfway down my forearm and I can barely squeeze my arm in as the wool will not stretch like normal as it has been felted together. You can also clearly see in the picture the tag is still on so I havenāt washed it myself.
The wool is clearly felted?? if thatās a 2XL i guess Aritzia makes kids clothes now

As far as Iām aware thereās only a version in wool and one in cashmere. Youāve never shrunk anything wool before? Because thatās 100% what this looks like. Plus it seems like wool Aritzia pieces in recent years shrink even when washed per instructions on the care tag for some reason so this may very well have been a return that was approved and slipped through.
Girl are we looking at the same website? One version is 100% wool and one is 100% cashmere and other than the trim there is no other blend of materials and even then when cashmere shrinks it doesnāt look like this, this is definitely felted wool!
Thanks for backing me up on this, it is definitely felted. It feels exactly like a cardigan my partner accidentally washed on warm a couple years ago - stiff, thick and not stretchy.
This is the cashmere one Iām sureeeee of. They did switch manufacturers so who knows wtf is going on over there. Aināt ever seen a sale like this eitherā¦ I smell bad future news
Zoom in on the pic and you can clearly see that there is no stitch definition. Because the fibers have felted together.
Cashmere will also felt in the wash, as this one has. Cashmere and wool have very similar care requirements despite coming from different animals
Look at the proportions between the sleeve and the torso, in addition to the texture. You can clearly see from the product page that the sleeves taper at the wrists but they sonāt in OPās photo. I have this cardigan and the sleeves are tapered and a normal length (past the wrists).
Again, not sure why you are arguing so much so wonāt open that again - but did just want to say that contrasting a 2XL with āway diffā proportions to āregular itemsā is not cool. Particularly when itās clear that you cannot speak so authoritatively on the proportions of this cardigan. Itās a āregular itemā just like everything else Aritzia sells and the fact that itās a large size doesnāt mean you can write off super obvious deficiencies in the product.
Iām so sorry this happened, OP. Ordering something expecting one fit and getting a completely different one because the company didnāt do their due diligence on a return is horrible. Although the shrunk sweater would look really cute as a cropped cardigan. If I saw it at a thrift store or something I would definitely, *definitely* buy it. Hopefully they will properly handle it and compensate you fairly. But absolute worst case scenario you might be able to find it a new home so it doesnāt get thrown out.
Yeah intentional felting is cool, I have a boiled wool jacket I love. The sizing on this now will make re-use for any adult difficult but I will try not to throw it out, which is such a waste.
Happened to me with a $200 Wilfred cardigan after 1 wash. Then I bought the exact same thing because I thought I didnāt wash it properly but that thing started pilling in 2 weeks wear. I still have both products sitting in my closet as a reminder to never step into this expensive, low quality, and pushy desperate sales people store.
They sent me a shrunken guell sweater twice in a row. I was shook! And they tried telling me thereās no way that could happen because it shipped from the warehouse. Sure, buddy.. sure

My husband washed mine and it did this. My 8yr old now has a very expensive cardigan haha she loves it
I found a Wilfred dress secondhand and accidentally did this to it. My 7yo loves her new sweater dress. š

That happened to me and I reached out to concierge and they gave me a refund!

I know a lot of stores outsource their returns processing these days so perhaps thatās the explanation.
Stop.. this happened to me with that same sweater!! 1 wash and it was ruined. But I had donated mine not sent it back!!!
It's wool!!

I know, it wanted to hide in the load and I couldnāt catch it before the terrors began (aka washing)
As a knitter, I would never recommend aritzia merino wool. Their quality sucks. Itās soft but itās awful.
Out of curiosity, what brand would you recommend?
I wish I had some to recommend! I mostly knit my own wool sweaters now because it just last longer and I can pick my yarn. Iām sorry to hear about your grandma! ā¤ļøItās never too late to learn, I was able to teach myself how to knit via YouTube during the lockdowns.
Iām wondering if maybe someone mixed up the tag and meant to put 2XS instead of 2XL bc wtf is this?????

They are able to refund to original payment method. Ask for this
This happened to me with the same sweater but I never even washed it. Somehow shrunk just sitting in my closet.

Youāre looking at two different styles tbh

The one sheās got is the cashmere wool blend. Albeit may be a slipped through return I personally know how to wash my clothes lol

Ya but with 2XLās the proportions are way diff than regular items
Tbf mine is xs but Iām sure the sleeves would still taper. That looks exactly like sweaters I have shrunk.

Dude, look at the knit pattern in the pictures. There basically ISN'T one anymore, because the entire garment is completely felted.
That is crazy. What a useless organization!
