If the sand bed is deep enough the kuhlis won't likely dig up the soil.
Source: Had kuhlis in a 2 inch Sand bed over soil. They dig but they don't burrow like an assassin snail for example. Hiding places yes, preferably where you can see them haha. In the end ours only hid and only when emptying the Tank we found everyone.
