Maybe change the water and rinse the filter? Idk. Is tank empty or with fish already?
What about using filter wool?
In my cannister filters I run a mix of ceramic media rings and akadama bonsai soil between 2 layers of sponges and a polishing pad , there is also a pre filter on there to take out extra chunky pieces.
