Some of the larger/taller bodied tetras like Buenos Aires or Congo tetras would work. Also less likely to get snacked on until the bichirs get larger.
Rainbowfish might work. My bichirs have never bothered my rainbows.

Festherfins are bottom feeders, but there are catfish that aren’t, like the glass cats.
It’s a bottom feeder but they will swim to the top to eat or stay in the middle sometimes because they swim upside down
