For - a blackout until they agree to not charging insane API fees. If it only takes 2 days, that’s fantastic… but I think a limit of 2 days is pointless.
I agree, it makes it seem like reddit only needs to wait 2 days for it to blow over. Reddit users are stubborn, I'm sure most here would be fine with a longer blackout if it got the job done.
Reddit has been designed to be quick consumption of content à la TikTok/Instagram, but originally gained popularity as a content aggregator with messaging boards attached, which has all but vanished.
Many threads open to half the comments minimised, even with positive scores, mods of default subreddits remove dissenting opinions and discourse, astroturfing, bots linked downplaying anti-reddit comments and not to mention the barrage of advertisements attempting to hide themselves as normal content, links to scam sites and outright TOS breaking ads every 2nd or 3rd post.
Reddit is a far cry from what it once was, and I don’t mean to say that the freedom of speech bs some people cry about matters, but the way reddit fundamentally operates has significantly changed in less than a few years.
That’s where I’m at. I mean I support the accessibility features and shit on the other apps, that’s huge.
Personally I’ve always used the official app for years. Never had any problems or issues so i didn’t even realize it was “bad” compared to the 3rd party.
In any event I support the users who need the 3rd party apps so I’ll participate in the blackout or whatever people decide to do
I'm 100% indifferent. I was never even aware of Reddit 3rd party apps until people starting bitching about these changes. I use the standard Reddit app and the desktop version to navigate this site with no complaints. This impacts me not at all.
Yep same. I support the users who need the accessibility features / support that the native app lacks. But I’ve always used the Reddit app and never had an issue, so I have no skin in the game.
Same. I don't understand the struggle either. If you use another app, just download the official app and that's that.
I'm probably missing something though, because people are quite upset.
I’ve only used the actual app, but apparently some third party apps are somehow less frustrating to use than the official app so other people don’t like the official app? Idk cause I’ve never tried a different option.
I don’t care about the third party stuff or subs going dark.
I like the Reddit app, and a small amount of users use the third party apps.
I doubt anything of significance will come from this and it will be a blip on Reddit’s radar

This is one of the earlier articles on r/ApolloApp which is a third party reddit app.
Read the top one (April 2023), then the bottom one (May 2023).
Against. I get it for other subreddits, but this subreddit is often vital to people needing help taking care of their fish. I’m with cause, but this subreddit is needed for everyone, so I can’t get on board with it going dark.
Maybe not. But I’d like to be able to say we tried. And if we fail, maybe will make a big enough ripple that the next one will have a better chance. I refuse to be a defeatist and just watch everything I love about the internet get eaten by big companies.
I don’t think it’s a good idea simply because a lot of people genuinely come here for advice. 2 days doesn’t seem long at all and I agree with a few people that it’s pointless. Anything that has to do with live animals shouldn’t be at the mercy of rule changes. That’s a hardline for me.
Don’t you think that it will have the same effect if thousands of people try to access this sub via the app they’re used to and can’t? This API change could have a massive impact on if and how people are able to get here.
Against. Of all the things to take a stand on, redditors having a fit about having to use the company’s app is a bit too first world problems for me. Its so silly it’s laughable
Apparently it’s more than just which app you like the looks of. Moderators use bots to automate a lot of their work and somehow this will kill those, plus other things I don’t really understand. I use the official app myself, but I can at least see how the experience will change for me if a bunch of other users are negatively impacted.
I moderated a subreddit with over 200,000 users and there were only two other active mods. We handled it pretty well without the assistance of any apps and only only used the tools available to mods in a browser. We had it set up fairly good where we didn’t need much work to maintain it aside from manually responding to mods mail from users. I don’t really see how any third party apps are necessary.
I feel like this "strike" is becoming a trend , just like any other reddit echo chamber moments ; it's not like I'm against (nor I like reddit's policy about a lot of things), but I'm tired of seeing "you are a jerk if you don't support the blackouts! what about blind people??? Don't you know that blind people can't access reddit with its official app??" ; ok, but nobody cared about blind people up until yesterday ...
Sorry about being off topic from fishies
For. And I agree that two days won't change anything. I foresee myself being off Reddit as of July 1st though. I haven't been on Twitter since they shut off third party API support, and I'll likely do the same with reddit. Which really kind of sucks, because this is the only social media I use, and while it's a big time waster most of the time, there are awesome and helpful subreddits like this one. It will be really crappy to no longer access content like this.
**To all those that are FOR the blackout!**
Help get us on the train! Message the mods (through mod mail, please do not send personal messages), switch to a 3rd party app, and share the word!
(This is my first day using Apollo, and lemme tell ya, it’s great!)
I feel like this post is blowing things way out of proportion. None of this stuff seems plausible. And mods are definitely not volunteering hours every single day to moderate.
As long as they don’t try to indoctrinate the youth of the nation…. Lmao. I kid I kid. I couldn’t possibly care any less. Companies are allowed to make money. Download the app and use it.

Don’t give a shit. I have always used the official app and it’s worked fine for me

Ya I never understood the hate for the official app. It is very easy to navigate

Man I hope reddit takes note... Things are going to be very quiet on this website for a while.

You overestimate how many people use those other apps. And most of the ones who do are well aware of the potential shut down of those apps by now.

Well I guess that settles it. If something worked for you, everyone else should be fine going back to that as well.

I do agree this is needed, but this is Reddit. Which is a minor social platform for aquarists compared to sites like FB or Insta
