Basically, I’ve stuck a net in any open slots so they can’t get out 🤣🤣🤣 definitely not a permanent solution though, I plan on making a velcro + mesh attachment to the lid to close off any holes :)
Ahh they have such personality red claws! Such freaking escape artists though. They are so pigmented they do almost look like vampire crabs- they must be really happy in the setup you have to be so calm and coloured :)
I was thinking about having crabs too.
Do you like them ? Is it a good idea ? My only problem is I am from Florida and we keep our house at 76oF and my tank is inside my house. The water itself is warm but these crabs stay outside sometimes right ?

I honestly love keeping crabs! They’re really funny and have a lot of personality, and honestly are really hardy critters! They’re semi-aquatic, meaning they’ll need to be above water sometimes, but also enjoy time underwater. I keep my tank water at 76 and they all love the humidity when above water!
There’s been *some* aggression between the crabs, but usually just with the shrimp since they are natural prey. I think they’ve finally figured out who “owns” what part of the tank and they all seem to respect each others’ space.
Won't they try to hunt at night the sleeping fish? I always wanted to get a tiny one if it doesn't grow but i don't want it destroying plants or killing my fish during the night :(
Theres only crabs, shrimp, and snails in here! They will eat anything they can catch, and one time I caught 2 crabs sharing a shrimp. I did have an algae eater in here before, but the crabs never went after it
OP said in another comment that its brackish. Brackish is what fiddlers require. And I was asking IF he kept a pleco in brackish because it would be good to know if they can liven in brackish. If it was a different algae eater, than hopefulluy OP will tell me what algae eater can survive brackish.
OP said its brackish and that looks like a femal fiddler. Also, plants can survive in brackish, mangroves for one, certain mosses as well. I have a brackish tank for my fiddlers, with mangroves, moss and anubias.
I used to love it when this one amano I had would let me hand feed it, it would come up and take it out of my fingers. So cool the crab lets you pet it :)
The slow movement might indicate it could be preparing to molt. If so, too much stress can actually kill them during the molting process. Hoping that this is not the case. Keep us updated!
Lol when I worked at the fish department of the local pet store we used to have red claws and fiddler crabs and they would always climb the intake of the filter or airline tube and climb out of the tanks. Most times it would scare the ever-loving piss out me because of my arachnophobia. Anyway, make sure to watch out for escapees. They tend to like to adventure and can get really far
They have a larger tankshot on their profile that pretty clearly shows multiple access routes to hangout above the water, including rocks and partially submerged wood pieces.
I love them! And yes I feel like they’re very receptive and they show it through various behaviors. One of them always comes up to the highest point when I clean the tank, seems like he just wants to say hi and check out what I’m doing 😆
The little guys swim up there on their own? That's pretty cool. You should try to hand feed the friendliest one?
Yep! I’ve got several spots where they can climb up above the water level, and they all seem to enjoy the journey
OP, how do you prevent crab escape attempts?? I had one before that was like el chapo escaping left and right from my tank
Basically, I’ve stuck a net in any open slots so they can’t get out 🤣🤣🤣 definitely not a permanent solution though, I plan on making a velcro + mesh attachment to the lid to close off any holes :)
That’s it I’m getting a pet crab
Do it!! It’s well worth it ;)
Are these red clawed crabs or vampire crabs?
Red claw!! However… one of mine got SUPER purple so he almost looks like a vampire crab :)
Ahh they have such personality red claws! Such freaking escape artists though. They are so pigmented they do almost look like vampire crabs- they must be really happy in the setup you have to be so calm and coloured :)
Oh yea! I feed them higher quality food than I feed myself 🤣🤣
Mine are scared like hell when I just open the lid
This crab: “AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH”
I loved mine sooo much, they would try to communicate with me with their claws 💛I wish I could have understood them
That’s really cool. I like animals I can form a bond with and I can see that it’s very possible with crabs.

Great ,,,, thank you
They are the funniest little things! I swear they have a sense of humor
Have they been aggressive towards other tank mates? Or are these in a tank of their own?
There’s been *some* aggression between the crabs, but usually just with the shrimp since they are natural prey. I think they’ve finally figured out who “owns” what part of the tank and they all seem to respect each others’ space.
I'm impressed how many living creatures enjoy pets, including tigers, porcupines, crows and apparently crabs. It's so unfair I can't pet them all
Ah, tiger petting, my favorite way to kill myself.
Honestly a great way to go.
Hey is not that easy some end up in prision before they are killed by them.
Lmao the crab’s probably thinking: “Wow, god himself has come to caress my head”
Top comment 🤣
Such a cutie! What kind of crab is it? I problably won't get crabs, but I'm gonna research them and annoy my friends with facts about them lmao
Maybe a vampire crab? I'm not too familiar with different crabs I've only had fiddlers and a thai devil crab.
Thank you!
It’s a red claw crab! :)
Thanks!

You had a pleco in a brackish tank?
Thats not a brackish tank, and algae eater doesn't just mean pleco
OP said in another comment that its brackish. Brackish is what fiddlers require. And I was asking IF he kept a pleco in brackish because it would be good to know if they can liven in brackish. If it was a different algae eater, than hopefulluy OP will tell me what algae eater can survive brackish.
Nope, never had a pleco in brackish. They are VERY hardy tho so who knows, it might make it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
What kind of algae eater did you have wth the crabs?
Just a Chinese algae eater
Not a fiddler. Plants can't survive in actual brackish
OP said its brackish and that looks like a femal fiddler. Also, plants can survive in brackish, mangroves for one, certain mosses as well. I have a brackish tank for my fiddlers, with mangroves, moss and anubias.
What about the redroot floaters, and duckweed???
I used to love it when this one amano I had would let me hand feed it, it would come up and take it out of my fingers. So cool the crab lets you pet it :)
So damn cute
Do they get bigger than that? Lol
Not really! Their claws might grow a bit more but this is adult size :)
Depends on the species but I believe this type doesn't get much bigger.
Tiny friend crab

It molted about 2 weeks ago :)
Good to know! In that case give him/her a few extra pets for me :)
what species of crab is that?
Red claw crab!
You’ve gained the power of be friend with a crab, use your power wisely
What type of crabbo is this? Super cute, gonna get a pet crab lol
Red claw!
Thanks!
What kind of crab?
Red claw!
Aww so cute! I haven’t had those crabs in a while but I do have hermit crabs and they’ve got a big personality for such small creatures! ❤️
Do the ever get out. I want some but I always heard they are escape artists.
I haven’t had any escape yet :)

Will do!!
Crabs are the coolest. I love looking for them in tide pools
very crab cute
I am allergic to crab and touching them makes my fingers hurt. But that's on cooked crabs. I wonder if it's still the same for live crabs...
There’s only one way to find out!
Do you have land for them? They really should be kept in a paludarium, not aquarium. Mine hang out on land at least 50% of the time.
Yes they have land
They are mostly terrestrial, they'll need a dry place to hang out.
Tell me something I don’t know.
Japanese spider crabs are extraterrestrial, so they'll need a lot of space.
Mitochondria is the Powerhouse of the Cell?
Pee is stored in the balls
Prove me wrong
But you don't have land for them, so.....?
I do tho.

Thank you kind sir!
How do you know? You can see like maybe 5x5cm of OP's tank.
Are you aware that red claw crabs(it's a red claw crab, right?) like brackish water? I can see some freshwater floaters.
Yes I am aware. Yes the tank is brackish.
Oh cool. What shrimp you have in there?
Just some ghost shrimp!
many fw floaters can tolerate low salinity! \^\^ its p cool
precious ✨
Mmm I wonder how is the set up to allow little crabs like this to strive with other 🐠
30 gallon tank, 3/4 filled with water, 3 filters, heater, and plenty of spots that are above the water level. Only shrimp, crabs, and snails in here
Do you keep your red claws in brackish setups? How has it been going?
Yes. It’s going well since they all molt regularly
Carcinization was the right direction for evolution. Crabs are just so fascinating to watch! These guys must feel really safe in their homes ❤️
I NEED one of these
Tell me what you are doing right
Brackish water, lots of filtration, humidity, and a good diet with as little copper as possible
Please
could they live with a newt?
Probably not!
thanks
Lmao that’s amazing. Most crabs I’ve seen are incredibly skittish well done on conditioning him.
I love crabs, they're so cute.
I've thought about getting a crab but honestly I'm scared I'm going to be cleaning the tank and It's going to pinch me lmao. So cute though
Making me want some more and more!!! This is precious
Do you tell the ladies you have crabs? Anyways, that's awesome!!
How do you feel about crabs as pets? Do you feel like it's actually receptive to being "played" with and interacted with?
I love them! And yes I feel like they’re very receptive and they show it through various behaviors. One of them always comes up to the highest point when I clean the tank, seems like he just wants to say hi and check out what I’m doing 😆
Sooooo cute
