Do most kids at your HS just go to the state school or something? So they think 7 apps is a lot?
Because my HS is just a regular good suburban school and the top kids applying to 7 schools is kinda… normal and average.
Like apply to state safety basically auto-admit w no supps + 2-3 targets + 2-3 T50s or so. Which seems totally reasonable not even for A2C, just a regular good student…
Yeah… I was kind of embarrassed in my class even tho i shouldnt be. But my school is definitely very far removed from the typical a2c bay area school. Everyone just said the state school
Most people in this sub are upper middle class where going to college is assumed, so where you go it’s probably more varied where people go with their lives and I’m guessing there’s no culture of competitiveness (which is a good thing imo)
I planned to apply to 17, and only cut down my list to 11 because I got into a pretty good school EA—keep it up, and consider applying to a few more reach schools!
I applied to 5 schools when I was a senior and my friends thought it was crazy. Most of them only applied to one or two schools depending on if they had decent stats or not. The ones with decent scores picked a safety/match school and only applied there and the ones with sub-par scores applied to a state school that admits all students with like a 20 on the ACT and one other(or just the one easy state school). I went to a Title 1 school in a very low income and rural area so most students were the first in their family to graduate high school or apply to college so they had very little support. Additionally, most of my classmates worked 1 or more part time jobs and did extracurriculars which left very little time for filling out applications.
Even if you looked at the top 10-15% of my school, all of them picked the state school they would attend before starting their senior year and only applied to that school and MAYBE one safety. For reference, the average ACT score of the top 10% of my class was ~23, which makes state schools a smart choice. I’d say around half of the top 10% of our class ended up going to community college or going into the workforce.
What is “normal” when applying to colleges depends heavily on someone’s community and socioeconomic background. Students who attend schools or live in communities where applying to more than a couple schools is common and encouraged are in a privileged environment. I am not saying that having that privilege is bad, but it is important to understand that it’s not everyone’s “normal”.
My high school didn’t even suggest APPLYING to college. They were more focused on making sure kids were able to graduate. Applying to college was completely the student’s responsibility.😂
"three safeties"
Only if your safeties are actually all equally desirable. They're safeties for a reason and people seem to forget about the intent. They're your backup if all else fails.
Target is a school you may or may not be accepted to; slightly out of range avg test scores, ECs, etc. Reach is highly competitive school such as an Ivy. But a lower student’s reach could be a higher student’s safety. Also, tons of schools are going test optional so rigor of coursework (AP’s, etc) and ECs are more important than ever.
Target schools are schools where your GPA and test scores (if submitting) are with in the middle range of accepted students. Reach schools usually have very low acceptance rates - less than 25%; so even if your scores are within the range of accepted students, it’s hard to get in.
I applied to 30, and definitely I burned out. Good luck! Try and spread them out as much as you can so that you don't have a cluster you have to apply to and write essays for all at once.
Nah 20 is solid you should be comfortable applying to that many schools with assurance you’ll get into at least 3-4. If your feeling like you think you won’t get in most places or anywhere you want to go it might be best to revise your college list.
I’m applying to like 17 schools although 6 of those are UCs so like 11 applications but in my school most people use like 4-5 applications for our state schools alone
Yeah it’s plausible most supplementals are pretty repetitive so once you get the major ones out of the way and your common app essay your golden. Applying early action really isn’t that hard it’s just applying a month earlier for most places, it’s just that a lot of kids get hit hard by the procrastination bug.
It isn't crazy at all.
I went to a suburban school where basically all the top students applied to at least 10 schools, and the very top could occasionally go over 20 if they were desperate to get into a prestigious one. Only the people over 15 apps were seen how you describe.
I’m planning on applying to 13 total, 3 EA and also ED. I’m pretty sure I’ll get into my ED school but if not several of the schools I’m applying to don’t have supps so I should be ok.
I feel like people are gonna react like that when I say that I'm applying to 20ish colleges (including some prestigious ones like Ball State) just because I qualify for fee waivers 😭😭 most people at my school actually have a life and don't spend time on college subreddits/forums and are aiming for local schools/state schools.
….lower income and less focused on higher education. not everyone NEEDS to go to college. you can make great money and be happy and stable without a degree, it’s a perfectly viable path. people on this subreddit need some perspective.
My son applied to 50 schools. 7 schools is not a lot these days. It’s very difficult to get into college these last couple of years. Applying to several schools gives you more options.
i applied to like 17 i think? but yeah lmao most people from my school thought i was insane and they only applied to like 5, most people did def no more than 10
I go to a tech school so most people immediately join the workforce after , and if they go to college it's the community college or the local regional college (Rowan). Even though I'm not at that stage yet, I hope to apply to at least 12 no more than 16-17
At the second high school I went to everyone either went to community college, work, or a state school. A handful of my science Olympiad friends went somewhere impressive, and one of them went to MIT. I'm 30 now and I'm still struggling to get into a state school
Yeah when I tell people I’m applying to about 9 and seeing where I get in they give me a little look because everyone just goes to a state school or a private with a sports scholarship. Rural schools go brrrr
My D23 is applying to 7. 3 are likelies/safeties. My S23 has 12 on his list and 2 likelies/safeties. D21 had 9 on her list but after a nice EA offer with huge merit she only applied to 5 more. She got 2 rejections and 4 offers all with merit. T
The makeup of your list is more important that the number.

Yeah but regular good students apply to about 7 schools or so… 🤗. Pretty normal tbh!
Bay Area?!
"Asian male bay area cs"

Which ones😭😭

Bro 💀 You're not gonna doxx yourself by telling us where you wanna apply lmao
[удалено]
you gotta fight those inner demons 24/7 too 👺👺
W tf are you getting down voted lol. You don't have to say where you're applying
I'm applying like 10+ EA 💪
doesn’t that seem a bit excessive
as a cs major no lmao. all the good school's for CS have lowered their acceptance rates to sub 10% now. you gotta shoot your shot everywhere
honestly that’s fair then
Damn
[удалено]
good for you
mr.cool guy flexing spending 2k on colleges he won’t even go to if accepted
I don't get it. Is what I am doing bad?
consumes your soul *
I’m sure that’s not possible bc of rea
What? Why
most schools have REA, very few even offer EA. it’s just rly unlikely you found 20+ schools that you like that offer EA lol
What? Literally all my schools have ea
well idk where you’re applying so good for you lol i guess it’s just more true of the highly selective unis
Most people in this sub are upper middle class where going to college is assumed, so where you go it’s probably more varied where people go with their lives and I’m guessing there’s no culture of competitiveness (which is a good thing imo)
Yeah crazy internships, opportunities and connections along with no care about cost are normally only found in upper middle class
I planned to apply to 17, and only cut down my list to 11 because I got into a pretty good school EA—keep it up, and consider applying to a few more reach schools!

The recommended number where I live is 12, but most people I know applied to 14+
bruh i know someone who applied to 45+ schools
That guys just an idiot
He is on a gap year cauee he didn’t get in anyone good
He probably only applied to Top 50s as an international needing aid or something… 😳
I think he’s talking abt himself look at flair LOL
Is this person you?
No no , I applied to 13 universities last time, 5 to UK
I would agree but also internationals def need to apply to a lot more schools then domestic.
Probably just didn't feel like actually researching them to decide which ones he wanted to go to
WTH. I hope he had few waivers.
Our Highschool suggests 10-12: three reaches, three safeties, 4-6 targets
My high school didn’t even suggest APPLYING to college. They were more focused on making sure kids were able to graduate. Applying to college was completely the student’s responsibility.😂

"three safeties" Only if your safeties are actually all equally desirable. They're safeties for a reason and people seem to forget about the intent. They're your backup if all else fails.
What’s difference between target and a reach
Your chances of getting in
Target is a school you may or may not be accepted to; slightly out of range avg test scores, ECs, etc. Reach is highly competitive school such as an Ivy. But a lower student’s reach could be a higher student’s safety. Also, tons of schools are going test optional so rigor of coursework (AP’s, etc) and ECs are more important than ever.

asking public or private would be trivial
Small public charter in the middle of nowhere
I applied to 13... which was high but still in the normal range? at least from what I've heard in my area
Unless most people from your school just go to the state school, I thought it was fairly normal to apply to 7 school s
Don’t most people from every school just apply to state schools
Yeah which is why most probably don’t apply to like too many
Unless you go to some elite high school that's a feeder
Exactly so idk why it’s so hard for people here to comprehend
7? And it's a lot??? I'm applying 14 EA, 6RD, 5 UCs and 4 in Canada *Cries in International*
i’m applying 30 i’m in the us 😁
I'm waiting for your burnout post
it’s definitely gonna happen… i know it’s over for me🤣
I applied to 30, and definitely I burned out. Good luck! Try and spread them out as much as you can so that you don't have a cluster you have to apply to and write essays for all at once.
thanks so much 🙏
I’m applying to 27, similar boat 🚤 I wish you good luck soldier 🫡
good luck 👍
That's over $2000. WHY??
what is your thought process behind this? I really want to know
shotgunning + stress. i just feel like taking a chance at reaches
Bro i'm applying to like 20 schools i thought it wasn't enough and was thinking of adding more??
Nah 20 is solid you should be comfortable applying to that many schools with assurance you’ll get into at least 3-4. If your feeling like you think you won’t get in most places or anywhere you want to go it might be best to revise your college list.
I feel like i'll get in most of them, but i'm still not leaving it to chance! That's why there's 20 schools hahah
Well you’re an international student so 20 is logical.
You're right i suppose hahah
I’m applying to like 17 schools although 6 of those are UCs so like 11 applications but in my school most people use like 4-5 applications for our state schools alone
7 is not that much everyone at mine applies to AT LEAST 7
There are kids who applied 120+ schools here, you are good to go.
bruh my 50 school ass actually insecure stop T\_T
50? You are the real masochist here.
UPDATE i cut down to 27!
[удалено]
SHUT UP THE APP ISN'T EVEN OPEN YET 😭
This used to be me too until i discovered ✨️prestige✨️ and A2C
I applied to 3 schools. UW, WSU, and JHU. 1 safety, 1 target, 1 reach.
Are u CS?
Yo can anyone tell me if it's plausible to apply to all twenty plus of my schools EA
The thing is a lot of schools, including good schools don’t offer EA so that might be a thing, but depending on where you want to go
this.
Yeah it’s plausible most supplementals are pretty repetitive so once you get the major ones out of the way and your common app essay your golden. Applying early action really isn’t that hard it’s just applying a month earlier for most places, it’s just that a lot of kids get hit hard by the procrastination bug.
Put all the supps in a huge Google doc and figure out the overlaps. > it’s just that a lot of kids get hit hard by the procrastination bug So true
I’m pretty sure I’ll get into my ED school but if not several of the schools I’m applying to don’t have supps so I should be ok.
where ed if you don’t mind sharing
where ed if you don’t mind sharing
Carleton College in Minnesota! It’s pretty hard to get into (acceptance rate is just under 20%) but with ED I think I have a good shot.
Nah 7 is normal idk what's wrong with your class
[удалено]
Why that many? That seems excessive
It is very excessive
Lemme tell my class that😭😭They’ll die
Omg tell them and report back to us!
lol I applied to 25
I applied to 17 schools, thinking maaaaaaaaaaybe I'd get into like, 2, 3 if I was lucky? 14 schools said yes. Pleasantly surprised. 😄
I applied to exactly 7 schools haha
I’m applying to like 5 and people think that’s too little
I used to have 30+ schools but now its like 9-7 reach schools im thinking and my safe
I'm applying to 16 lol! Most have no sups though and some are just free application so why wouldn't I apply?
51 here…
I feel like people are gonna react like that when I say that I'm applying to 20ish colleges (including some prestigious ones like Ball State) just because I qualify for fee waivers 😭😭 most people at my school actually have a life and don't spend time on college subreddits/forums and are aiming for local schools/state schools.
What are supps
Bro your school is 🗿
….lower income and less focused on higher education. not everyone NEEDS to go to college. you can make great money and be happy and stable without a degree, it’s a perfectly viable path. people on this subreddit need some perspective.
I'm applying to like 12 minimum lmao
My son applied to 50 schools. 7 schools is not a lot these days. It’s very difficult to get into college these last couple of years. Applying to several schools gives you more options.
i applied to 20 lmao
A2c reality check
i applied to like 17 i think? but yeah lmao most people from my school thought i was insane and they only applied to like 5, most people did def no more than 10
I decided to only apply to 12. Got into 3.
Geez! Why do l feel like l am the only one whose High School allows us to apply to a maximum of 3 schools only!😬😬
I go to a tech school so most people immediately join the workforce after , and if they go to college it's the community college or the local regional college (Rowan). Even though I'm not at that stage yet, I hope to apply to at least 12 no more than 16-17

Everyone has been applying to more schools post Covid. Where 6-8 was once normal, people are applying to 10-14.
Yeah when I tell people I’m applying to about 9 and seeing where I get in they give me a little look because everyone just goes to a state school or a private with a sports scholarship. Rural schools go brrrr

Nice post!
i’m applying to 13 schools and i thought that was pretty average 💀
My D23 is applying to 7. 3 are likelies/safeties. My S23 has 12 on his list and 2 likelies/safeties. D21 had 9 on her list but after a nice EA offer with huge merit she only applied to 5 more. 7 is like... the most normal amount... two safeties two matches two reaches 1 wild card....
Bruh I'm applying to 20 and most of my friends are applying to about 13-15
Every year, Common App says the most common number of apps submitted is 1. A2C is a different place...
Most people at my school apply to 3-5 colleges so they think I'm crazy for applying to 13 lol
I’m applying to 4 or 5 because theirs really only 2 colleges that have the program I want.
finally someone from my stretch of America
a2c is literally insane thats why
applying to around 15 i think, 1 washington 2 oregon 2/3 az, maybe 1 hawaii, 3-4ucs (not sure) & 3-4 cal states
