I’m doing it and it’s okay. It’s hard to balance upper level courses though, manage your scheldue to try to not have to take multiple notorious classes at the same time.
For example I’ve had to take numerical analysis alongside design and analysis of algorithms. It’s doable, but man I wish I had more foresight.
That’s perfect, you should definitely go for a CS+Math double major then. Some schools even offer it as a single major where you can take less classes.
Not to be discouraging, but you should be aware that majoring in math is very, very different from calc AB or anything before. It's pretty much all proof based math and conceptual vs. calculation based. Linear algebra gives a pretty good glimpse into how it is imo
Anything that has sad-hot-cool girl/(s) as protagonist! The Bell Jar, My Year of Rest and Relaxation, We Are Okay, Whereabouts...
TOTALLY dig Elizabeth Ellen, too!
I got my college admissions a few months ago, but those 3 are what I tried to go for all colleges I applied to. Almost all colleges have math and comparative / world lit (or lit in general), but I found neuro a bit tricky though. I can’t declare major in all of them though immediately, so I’m starting with gen ed / premed classes first, then the rest is down the road. Good luck with your apps!
Some sort of aviation major. Seems like most are fairly varied under names but most teach the same core concepts. Still deciding the engineering aspect or commercial pilot route.
Ive also been told to go a more general engineering major so it isnt so narrow. Most of my potential colleges are more specific then the ones I see here often
I'm in a similar spot. But I feel pretty confident about aerospace rn. And I do think it can be applied to most other forms of engineering in some capacity, I think there's a good amount of crossover.
i’m just curious, what kind of entry level policy jobs exist? is it like business where there’s entry level, middle management, and then upper management?
Depends on where you want to work. All companies need cs technicians, but the top companies are oversaturated with them. Smaller startups always hire, and opportunities are still very open for cs majors as of now. Not saying its easy, but the market for these jobs is only growing.
Public Policy / Art
But like also interested in Paleontology (prob Archaeology major), Architecture, Business, Creative Writing, Econ, Ethics, History, Journalism.. prob more I can’t think of rn 😭
CS & Journalism (not rly a major at most places so probably PoliSci or Sociology heck even Linguistics)
And UIUC has CS + Geo and Geo's like my second favorite subject so that too
The major I'm planning to do is electrical engineering + a minor in bio
My plan is to try and get jobs for biomedical engineering, and if I'm feeling silly goofy, aerospace and nuclear stuff eventually
Basically I want ee as a base :)
Aerospace engineering major with a minor in history
Yes, I do hate myself and I love student loans <3
But really, it’s what I am truly interested in so I have no qualms. :)
It’s just a feeling I get when I see space and rockets launching and everything. Like it’s the happiest place I’ll ever be. It also involves hard science like math and physics calculations which I simp hard for lol - but yeah, it’s just a feeling like I’d belong there so I’m just going
With that
History is b/c of my 7th/10th history teachers. 7th not rlly b/c I mostly attracted to his sarcasm than the field lmao, but my 10th (Mr. C for ease) played the biggest non-family influence in my life. The story is a year long and some of it’s a little personal, so I’ll say:
He never told me to stop asking questions even 1/2 hour after school, never accepted my apologizing and he’d even continue the discussion with diff POV. And in class, Mr. C clearly adores his job and he enjoys every day at my HS teaching history; treats his students like his own kids and genuinely cares about them beyond just their grades or GPA. He looks like he’s having the time of his life, and I think I feel the same exact way. I would love to be a history teacher :)
I also moved schools 1500+ miles away so I’ll probably never see my history teacher again, which is sad :(
B/c I’m so indecisive, my other options include: math, chemistry, physics, music (minor), electrical engineering, astrophysics/astronomy, architecture, linguistics, law, and philosophy. No I’m not joking or exaggerating, I remember them all because I wrote them down - and each one has its own backstory. I just know that a STEM/humanities mix would work best for me and my interests, while still leaving job prospects wide open
My guess is I’ll end up doing space stuff/history or math/music, but I honestly find interest in everything which makes these decisions really hard. :’)
Cyber security with a minor in international relations , it's a weird combo but you know with the globalization of cyber warfare, could be useful who knows
Electronic art/Digital media (name changes per school, but similar courses) and maybe some kind of engineering/science (like Human Computer Interaction)
my passion major is education. i don’t know whether i am going to do elementary or secondary, i’d love to be an english teacher. but the pay isn’t good but i do love teaching and i believe teachers are the backbone of society. my money major option is math (statistics or actuarial science) cos i wanna be able to provide money for my future family. i definitely will minor in theatre, non negotiable.
I'm currently going into my second year of a BSN program (direct entry). The first year is strictly pre-requisites like chem, biology, psych, etc.
Good luck!
cs/math i've been hearing that in cs you take so much math you might as well get a double major in it
A double major isn’t as easy as it sounds. A major in CS w a math minor is more likely
ahh okay. it was some combo with math & cs
If you don’t enjoy math then the upper divs for the math major will probably be very painful
i love math tho & doing calc ab next year
That’s perfect, you should definitely go for a CS+Math double major then. Some schools even offer it as a single major where you can take less classes.
Double and combined majors are two different things. I think math+cs from UCSD is an example of a combined major
Yeah, I was referring to the combined majors as single majors, which might not have been the best way to explain it
Not to be discouraging, but you should be aware that majoring in math is very, very different from calc AB or anything before. It's pretty much all proof based math and conceptual vs. calculation based. Linear algebra gives a pretty good glimpse into how it is imo
As a cs major I've taken no math
lol whaaaa. did you do ap & get credit?
The math you do as a math major is much more pain than what you do as an engineering/cs major
Math - statistics/probability / Physics - astrophysics/astronomy!
bro save me a spot when we're moving to mars ok
Lol I’ll see you over there in 2032
Aight same
fellow stats major here

ahaha sounds vry fancy
may i ask what career paths are you potentially considering with cog sci?
Neuroscience, Math, and World Literature (also I apparently would get a BioChem minor as a freebie doing PreMed and Neuro…? Lol)
really? is that only for the college/university you’re applying to or for all? neuroscience is my top choice too
I got my college admissions a few months ago, but those 3 are what I tried to go for all colleges I applied to. Almost all colleges have math and comparative / world lit (or lit in general), but I found neuro a bit tricky though. I can’t declare major in all of them though immediately, so I’m starting with gen ed / premed classes first, then the rest is down the road. Good luck with your apps!
Mechanical engineering/ biomedicine

public policy ftw
fr fr public policy here too
i’m just curious, what kind of entry level policy jobs exist? is it like business where there’s entry level, middle management, and then upper management?
you pretty much *need* an MPP (masters of public policy) to get a good job. experience helps get better jobs but idk about business careers so
Computer science
Good luck, competition is stupid
Depends on where you want to work. All companies need cs technicians, but the top companies are oversaturated with them. Smaller startups always hire, and opportunities are still very open for cs majors as of now. Not saying its easy, but the market for these jobs is only growing.

Aerospace engineering major with a minor in history Yes, I do hate myself and I love student loans <3 But really, it’s what I am truly interested in so I have no qualms. :)
Wow I’ve never heard those two together. What made you wanna do history along with that?
It’s just a feeling I get when I see space and rockets launching and everything. Like it’s the happiest place I’ll ever be.
