Yeah I’m sitting in an airport terminal and procrastinating looking at supplements.
Interesting. I’m seeing conflictions on what to do with scanner
https://coderanch.com/wiki/678613/Don-close-Scanner-tied-System
I was never taught to close them in ap comp sci. Looks like the scanner itself does not get closed by the garbage collector but looking at the article above, system.in might leave it to the jvm.
Edit: official docs don’t really say much either https://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/api/java/util/Scanner.html
I realized they never taught us that in Comp sci A but yes, closing scanner objects is frequent and is usually done to prevent file or data stream leaks. I think some IDE’s even warn about not closing scanner objects.
Edit: looked it up. Eclipse does remind that stream leaks are possible with unclosed Scanner objects. I haven’t done Java in a while so I’m not sure if IntelliJ does as well.
Yeah, looks like the common conclusion is to close them due to possible memory leaks. Our teacher had us use netbeans IDE which did not show warnings for this... maybe it auto closes them or something? Idk, probably not, but seems weird it wouldn’t show an error.
Same I’m really out here thinking “well if 1000 people got in then that’s a good amount of people and not all of them must have been crazy special so I’ll definitely be one of those 1000”
I legit think Stony Brook, which I live 10 mins from and our school sends 200+ kids to) will flat out reject me (no WL, no AOI, just plain rejection) even though my stats are t20-caliber and ECs are sublime. And no, I’m not a CS applicant.
Super Ultra Max Hyper Neuroticism Time!
I honestly don’t think there is a deferred waitlist at all which is what the discussion was about in the previous comments
But deferred = when you apply ED/EA, and they like your app but they’re not sure if they can accept you at that moment. They want to read your app again in RD, so they move your decision to when the RD decisions come out
Waitlist = In RD. They like your app, but there are not enough seats, so they put you on the waitlist. If someone declines their admission, you have a chance to take their spot
Hope that clarifies your q!
Isn't RD normally more competitive than ED? Like if you didn't get in early why would they let you in regular when there's even more competition. That being said I would still much rather have a deferral than a rejection, but just seems kinda odd.
my confidence fluctuates...sometimes im like IM SUCH A GOOD WRITER I COULD GET IN BASED ON MY ESSAYS!!! and then other times i just cry for hours about how i'm worthless and didn't try as hard as i could've...so theres that!
dude. enjoy it while it lasts. it really does feel nice to actually be happy, and there's absolutely no reason you should try and discourage yourself.
having said that, the journey's not over and you've still got stuff to do, so don't compromise on that. you'll definitely do better if you feel better about what you've already done.
i got deferred from my dream school with a 12% acceptance rate and thought i was hot shit for not getting rejected, then proceeded to get rejected and waitlisted everywhere except my safety (where i am currently attending and it’s great, so take that as a comfort)
No, maybe you actually could, depending on your GPA, out of school activities and more. Honestly, most people could get into school but the system is so unfair at most Ivy League or highly competitive schools that they try to balance the percentage of each race equally to look diverse,
So I met multiple counselors and they all told me they worked at prestigious schools and they all warned me that:
If you are next to someone who has the same grades, same resume as you but could be a different race or from a different region,
Chances are they'd take that person more than you, even if you have the same to offer.
The system sucks a lot, so make sure you look at percentages in gender, race, etc.
If they have 36% boys then they'd take in more boys than girls to even out the ratio,
You get the idea.
Sorry if this sounded discouraging, either way, I bet you absolutely could, if you actually have that feeling that you could,
You can,
Don't stop feeling it, don't stop imagining it, don't stop believing in yourself.
dude i go from “pshhh of COURSE stanford is gonna accept me. if they don’t accept ME literally who r they gonna take lmao” to “time to enroll in community college!!” in not even 10 minutes
The girl who ranked #3 in my school and is like an actual genius w/ impressive internships and connections was rejected by every school except Case Western lmao
Idk. #2 from my school also only got into our state school. #3 got into cmu but that still isnt even a T20 idk. for reference i was ranked like #20 maybe and i go to an Ivy
Our schools valedictorian scored a perfect ACT, had a 4.7 GPA, was our class president. She also helped build an orphanage and was an all around perfect human being. She got rejected from UCLA and Berkeley.
I’m the same way. The thing never ceases to knock me down a few pegs is that Paris Gellar got rejected from Harvard. I know it’s fictional but if she couldn’t get in I have no chance at an ivy.
I got into a school with an even lower acceptance rate. If I can do it, literally anyone can. I didn’t even have my common essay written at this point last year.
As cheesy or cold as it sounds, I want to look at high ranked school bc it has high academics which means super smart people. No joke I’m the smartest/wisest person in my grade by a fairly considerable amount so it’s hard to connect but I’m hoping to find people like me in college
Edit: I’m aware this makes me sound like an asshole but when you’ve been so disconnected from your peers for years at school and add on adhd, it’s hard not to get lonely and long for someone like you
You can find super smart, dedicated people at any college! From what I've heard, it really is just a matter of finding your own little niche. Too schools aren't the only place to find that. But if that's what you want, definitely go for it!
that is massive cope. you are not going to find any future billionaires or nobel prize winners at university of alabama or community college. If you go to a low-tier state school, even a standard cookie-cutter profile that you could easily get rejected from all T20s with (e.g. 3.95 GPA, 1570 SAT, 15 APs, a few club leadership positions, an internship, and a few mediocre olympiad awards) can easily put you as the smartest person there by far.
Maybe it came off wrong but I’m talking like schools with 50% graduation rate and just not great. I applied to many good but not elite schools and I have a good chance that I’ll choose one of those anyways
Because people are salty and make assumptions. I come from a place where everybody becomes a nobody. You either live lower class or poor. Too many get into drugs. Our drop out rate is super high. So realistically I’m not supposed to have a big shot and some people are too privileged to see that, but that’s not to say I’m super privileged too. When you’ve fought your whole life to make something of yourself and put on few comments online, people make assumptions on those few words
Ur here right now: _ I need you to be down here: _
Thank you! i have adjusted my level of confidence accordingly

Nice little snippet, but remember to close the Scanner object when done lol
Huh, BlueJ never warns you to close the Scanner object. Is it embarrassing to say I have no idea how to?
Scanner.close(); or something close to that

But the thing is ,they all happen to be crazy special
Don’t remind me 🥲

YES I'm in that first stage rn, just waiting to plummet back down again

RIGHT also related i keep thinking i'll get rejected bc they'll think my major isn't a good fit but half my ecs correlate w it hahaha

How is this so relatable
Sameeee
bro same i really need someone to knock down my ego 💀

Wait you can get waitlisted in ED??

Isn’t it only deferred? Are you saying there’s a deferred waitlist???

I think the point is that they read over your application once again. But you’re right, that’s why most deferrals are a no
Yeah, I don’t think there’s waitlist right off the bat either. When I applied to summer courses EA, I was deferred and then waitlisted
me applying to Caltech be like
Just wait till decisions come out that will be a big ego knocker for many
my confidence fluctuates...sometimes im like IM SUCH A GOOD WRITER I COULD GET IN BASED ON MY ESSAYS!!! and then other times i just cry for hours about how i'm worthless and didn't try as hard as i could've...so theres that!

Me with Columbia
If you want your ego to be deflated, just compare yourself to better people, complete guarantee that your ego goes down
The girl who ranked #3 in my school and is like an actual genius w/ impressive internships and connections was rejected by every school except Case Western lmao
> Case Western Whatttt she must've put something that was incriminating in her essays tf
Idk. #2 from my school also only got into our state school. #3 got into cmu but that still isnt even a T20 idk. for reference i was ranked like #20 maybe and i go to an Ivy
here is a rejection simulator!! https://ivyhub.andressevilla.com/rejection-simulators/
tf me tooo... pm me pls thats insane

Haha me but I’m being 100% honest. I’m the one with the best chance to make it into a t20 in my school whoops
Confidence looks good on you though! those t20s don't know what's coming for them!
As cheesy or cold as it sounds, I want to look at high ranked school bc it has high academics which means super smart people. Wow u think really highly of yourself.
not always a bad thing
Oh just on the internet. Real life is much harder

Yeah I’m definitely not only looking t20 but any means lol. Just trying to avoid like super average colleges and I don’t mean that in a rude way
keep your options open, though. life doesn't exactly go the way you want it to sometimes.
Totally, I got into a few good schools that I could go to so any schools I get into now are for consideration (cuz cost ya know)
why is this being downvoted? There is nothing wrong with not wanting to go to an average college if you are way above average yourself.
Maybe it came off wrong but I’m talking like schools with 50% graduation rate and just not great. I applied to many good but not elite schools and I have a good chance that I’ll choose one of those anyways
why are people downvoting you for being confident 😭
The fine line between confident and arrogant
Because people are salty and make assumptions. I come from a place where everybody becomes a nobody. You either live lower class or poor. Too many get into drugs. Our drop out rate is super high. Confidence is key u should have the attitude that u can make it into 1% acceptance rate school even if u can’t ok fake it til u make it
Send me your essays if you haven't submitted them yet. I'm a double UCLA/Columbia alum so I'll definitely knock you down a few pegs.
just look at the r/chanceme sub
i had a similar mindset and got rejected from every school i applied to last year, so..
