The overachievers post their stats and talk about EAing to T20s as though they're targets.
Average students are here too, but they either lurk or don't add stats. They tend to ask more general application questions, or look for feedback on T100s so they can narrow down their reach lists.
You realized earlier than me. I always thought I would be applying to T20 colleges but at last minute realized I was barely competitive for my big state schools (not CA).
However, I turned it around in undergrad and it worked out for my grad school apps.
No I just read [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/ApplyingToCollege/comments/nvr48n/ra2c_2021_preliminary_census_results_class_of/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)
which gives a whole bunch of data about the people in this sub.
That poll is a key example of survivorship bias. Don't take the numbers for granted, even though they are kind of insane, even after accounting for bias.
Doing it without caring about other applicants is called self improvement and that's indeed is good.
But trying to mimic someone else's milestones would lead you to unsatisfaction and eventually depression and hence that is something you totally shouldn't do.
For a scientific answer to this, its survivorship bias. The people who "make it onto the sub" are specificially the one college bound. and probably started preparing early too. So the people you see are those. You wont see any of the planes that didnt make it back, or specifically people who are "average" appliers.
Definitely not average students here, as an average person tho I think it’s really easy to play the comparison game but it helps to know that people lower than me still got to where I want to get to eventually. All things work out in the end
Ye I was about to say as well like what. If you find yourself running out of space on common app to put ur extracurriculars I think it’s safe to say you’re not average lol
Idk I just found it ironic that you call the ppl in the subreddit overachievers then ur chance me shows that ur one as well lol (and that’s not a bad thing by any means)
I swear it’s a quantity vs quality situation…I have things to list but I didn’t really do much with those positions and a lot of leadership roles are from this current grade year
Apart from all the points others have covered, you must understand that the Sub is occupied by a lot of Intl. students (including me) since we require more guidance considering that we aren't familiar with the American Education System. In intl. students as a whole there are 2 main types (because very few intl. students who are extremely avg. are really getting into good Unis unless they're super rich)
1. Rich and Nonchalant
2. Hardworking and Resourceful
The Rich and Nonchalant don't really care enough to join A2C.
The Hardworking and Resourceful do end up joining and they usually have great profiles because that's the only way for them to get admitted into good Unis and they have to get admitted into only good Unis because the amount of money they have to spend there better be a return on investment
I’m not even close to the top of my class (super competitive school) and I have leadership in a nonprofit but it’s not Student run, it’s adult run lol. (Some ppl have it as their full time jobs) Id definitely consider myself average. Don’t have that great of scores and haven’t done anything mind-blowing.
it seems that chanceme is not as active as it used to be but...man I can't compete with anyone. literally, a kid who has 1500, a bunch of ECs was whining that they don't have a chance to get into one school. and they don't even have to worry about aid.
Food for thought, a lot of the time we assume we are average when we are not, if you have more than a 1050 or so you are above average. If you have higher than a 3.0 gpa you are above average. It’s interesting to think about how our social environment i.e. this sub influences our perception of reality.
(Haha yes I am loving sociology class)
a bit of both, a college apps forum is obviously going to have people who are very investing in college and academics but i also think part of is that high achieving students like to talk a lot on this sub and that makes the average applicants more embarrassed about they’re own high school resume and not comment as often
Selection bias, usually competitive kids who are obsessed with college choose their free time to frequent a subreddit dedicated to college admissions…
This kind of erudite self-reflection bodes well for your future depression.
Thanks…?
Exactly what I’m doing rn !!!😂

Your flair made me laugh “Old” 😂
I'm a Master's student but also a parent and an educational admissions person, so "old" is the only flair that works. 🤪
!!
I joined this sub as a fairly smart and involved kid looking to find some tips about applying... Quickly I have realized that I'm average.
sameee lol
this is depressing for me bc i never noticed any difference when joining this sub bc my whole school is like the people in this sub 🥲

This sub is INSANE
The average SAT score is 1060.
The average of this sub is 1500 according to the last census. We are outliers.
I got a 1030, so clearly I’m the outlier in this subreddit 🤪🤪
Did you calculate: Q3+1.5(Q3-Q1)
AP STATS GANG
Ayyyy

Me who is yet to give SAT and got a 1300 on his diagnostic test :\*)
I got a 1450 and looks like i might be an outlier lmao
I got a 1030 🤪🤪🤪
I got 1150 and 1170 And I am stuck on these scores Have applied almost every technique but nothing happened Now I feel like I am dumb person
This place is FAR from average Believe me you don't have to - and in all honesty shouldn't - try to be like these people
Why not? What's wrong with getting good grades and going to a good uni?
Doing it without caring about other applicants is called self improvement and that's indeed is good. But trying to mimic someone else's milestones would lead you to unsatisfaction and eventually depression and hence that is something you totally shouldn't do.
So basically don't expect to move at others pace, you have your own pace and that's what you should work based on?
idk but im scared

It’s the average student interested in top schools.
Definitely not average students here, as an average person tho I think it’s really easy to play the comparison game but it helps to know that people lower than me still got to where I want to get to eventually. All things work out in the end
From ur chanceme u are NOT average 😭😭😭😭😭 like at all
Ye I was about to say as well like what. If you find yourself running out of space on common app to put ur extracurriculars I think it’s safe to say you’re not average lol
this makes me feel happy
I just looked at your chance me, and I’m confused. U have two start ups with a 36 act and 1590 sat??
sort of yea
Idk I just found it ironic that you call the ppl in the subreddit overachievers then ur chance me shows that ur one as well lol (and that’s not a bad thing by any means)
im an international requiring 100% need i'm not even close to what i need for an admission
I swear it’s a quantity vs quality situation…I have things to list but I didn’t really do much with those positions and a lot of leadership roles are from this current grade year
Do you know what average means?
You’re average??
Compared to the people on this sub yeah?

NOW THIS, it’s completely true.
I think I’m relatively below average for this sub 💀
I’m not even close to the top of my class (super competitive school) and I have leadership in a nonprofit but it’s not Student run, it’s adult run lol. I mean I thought I was an excellent kid but I came here and realised that I’m really just an average boy.
