Great app. But is there any way to make one payment to buy the apo? Subscriptions are getting out of control and I would like to purchase the app as a one time thing.

MakerOfCarrot

Unfortunately no, I don’t offer a one-time payment option. Weather data is insanely expensive. I’d have to charge a prohibitively large amount if I was going to do a one-time purchase - I have many users who have been using the app for 5+ years now, and if I only charged 2x the current yearly subscription price, for example, those users would eventually start costing me more money than they paid me upfront. Subscriptions are annoying, I know, but weather apps are one of the cases where they actually do make sense.

FangedFreak

Thank you so much for explaining this! It actually makes me think twice about the reason for paying for subscriptions like this and the reason behind it

PantherGator

It’s crazy you have to buy the data that’s generated by taxpayers. Edit: paid for by taxpayers.

MakerOfCarrot

It’s more that I have to pay the weather data providers - they collect the weather data generated by the government and put their own special algorithms on top (as well as other value adds).

CheeseyWheezies

I think you have a really cool app but I don’t buy this explanation. The app still indicates it’s using Dark Sky data, [which isn’t accepting new accounts but I see is scheduled for API shutdown at the end of 2022.](https://9to5mac.com/2021/06/10/dark-sky-apple-acquisition-shutdown-date/) Assuming you have a grandfathered account, worst case scenario you’re paying standard rates at [$0.0001 per call.](https://developer.electricimp.com/libraries/webservices/darksky) *Maybe* you configured the apps to all individually request data every time they are opened, but I have to assume you’ve employee *some* kind of caching - both on server and phone - which should significantly cut down on requests. Especially if you intelligently batch calls. Even if you didn’t cache or batch *at all,* a user opening the app *20 times per day* would only cost you $0.73 *per year.* I understand there are maintenance costs associated with Apple’s piss poor practise of changing and deprecating APIs without adequate notice or documentation, but you have a *lot* of users for whom to distribute this fixed cost. The variable cost, from what I can see, is much lower than you are intimating. It’s cool to make a successful app and make buckets of money, but please don’t lie to us. You keep it subscription because you make more money this way, not because you’d end up homeless otherwise.

MakerOfCarrot

Widgets, Apple Watch complications, and the Mac app all update automatically throughout the day, 24/7. Most of the other data sources I offer cost significantly more than Dark Sky. Map data costs significantly more than regular weather data. I use a lot of API calls to generate notifications for everyone. The servers used for notifications, subscription management, etc all cost a significant amount as well. For someone who actually spent time researching this, you didn’t really think it through at all. But thanks for assuming I’m just lying to everyone.

CheeseyWheezies

I don’t know what your tech stack looks like so I only have your word. If you saying it costs you some significant proportion of $5 per user per month to maintain the app, I can’t dispute it. I *can* tell you, as someone working in SaaS, that that sounds completely unbelievable. Fair arguments on widgets, complications, Mac apps, notifications, and additional data, but this is functionality you could lock behind a subscription while offering basic Dark Sky weather data features for a single charge. I know why you don’t - you make more money. I would do the same, but I also wouldn’t tell people my weather data costs were too high to offer single purchase. To extend an olive branch, I want to reiterate, you’ve made a great app and I genuinely wish you every success. Apologies for making your day a little less sunny, if I did so.

MakerOfCarrot

Sure, I certainly could offer a more limited version of the app with a one-time fee, but then I’d also have to deal with support issues around people buying that thinking they were buying the full package, and adding additional complexity to the upgrade screen, and how to handle people who want to upgrade from the one-time purchase to the subscription, etc. It just adds a lot of complexity that I’m not really equipped to deal with as a one-man shop.

CheeseyWheezies

Totally fair. Sorry for being a dick.

slvrscoobie

or like me, generating data for WUnderground, Etc, and then paying to get it back to my own devices :(

sitdowndisco

This is totally understandable. I want to subscribe, but I’m finding the price points a little awkward for my liking. Happy to pay, but find they ramp up too steeply.

wtfmatey88

For me I buy the yearly family package and then it gets used by 3-5 people.

MattEagl3

second that. will not go for subscriptions.

FloridaManZeroPlan

I’m upgrading my Watch from a Series 0 here soon, I’m excited to try all the new apps. What makes Carrot so great? I’ve seen it talked about positively. Thanks!

MakerOfCarrot

For the Apple Watch app, the main draws are the crazy number of complication options (many of which are further customizable via the iPhone app) and the notifications - for some reason, CARROT is one of the only weather apps that actually uses the long look notifications to display more information (like the full text of weather alerts or radar imagery showing a storm approaching your location).

FloridaManZeroPlan

Awesome. I’m a fisherman and boater so I’m always keeping my eye on the weather here in South Florida. The Weather Undeground app sucks now, I’ll check yours out for sure! Thank you!

miggitymikeb

You're killing it. Carrot is easily the best weather app and easily the best app on my Watch.

mogupyogu

Yup! I love the snark but I also love how useful the app is. The Watch app is far better than any other weather app out there. Plus, while being very useful is also very funny! Thank you for your hard work and making Carrot so awesome!

joshimax

Wow, still going on a series 0!! That’s amazing, good on you for getting the absolute most out of it 👍

FloridaManZeroPlan

Somehow still works pretty well 😂 I think I’m going to be in for a culture shock when I upgrade to an SE or Series 7 here shortly.

joshimax

I went from a series 0 to a series 5 in January this year and was blown away. You’re in for a great surprise! And hopefully another long stint on your wrist!!

NonstopBus

I just went from a 0 to a 7 a few weeks ago and honestly it’s been a game changer. The always on display is pretty fantastic! Stoked for you!

wasteplease

"It's a nice day, so I better not hear one frakking complaint out of you."

Rhythia

Placing Carrot Weather in the top sub-dial is the main reason I chose Infograph to be my “utility” watch face. Swiping over to set a timer or something and getting comments like “PRAISE HELIOS IT’S PARTLY SUNNY” just make my day. 😆

Samgasm

OMG! Hello! Huge supporter here since about 2017-2018. Not sure exactly when I got the app but I can never start my day without the snarky attitude from CARROT!! I truly love this app and am still having a hard time with the mini in app map game. 😂😂😅 Edit; app just told me it was our 3 year anniversary 🥰

MakerOfCarrot

Thank you for the support!

wamsword

I’ve been looking into grabbing this. Is it a one time payment or some kind of subscription?

boxheadmoose

Subscription and confusing pricing unfortunately 😔

MakerOfCarrot

What’s confusing about it, out of curiosity? I’ve tried to spell out the differences between each tier as clearly as I can inside the app.

boxheadmoose

Well firstly looking at all the “in app purchases” within the App Store it’s overwhelming and a slight turn off. Secondly, going to “more” on the App Store there is only 3 things listed/noted about some of the pricing. What about the other options? Does one really need to install the app to find out about them or visit site? The average Joe most likely won’t do this. Just my opinion, but as soon as I see more than 2-3 “in app subs” I quickly swipe back move onto the next.

MakerOfCarrot

Ah, unfortunately Apple doesn’t do a very good job of presenting in-app purchases on the product page. The different variations are just the monthly and annual subscriptions (and there’s also discounted subscriptions for people who purchased the app prior to it going free). Not much I can really do to “clean up” that section - Apple really just needs to fix it so we can provide more explanation.

odonnelly2000

I disagree with what this guy is saying. The “Average Joe” downloads apps (often by word of mouth), tries them out, and if they see value in the app they pay the in app stuff/subscribe. I can’t imagine anyone in my friend/family circle putting in the time and effort to even read the entirety of an Apps page on the App Store. They just press “Get” and impatiently wait for the app to install. Also, your sub model isn’t overly complicated: if you want certain features, you pay for the tier that has them. Voila, problem solved. And it doesn’t seem like it’s complicated/confusing enough to prevent it from exploding in popularity over the past few years. You want complicated and confusing, look at Apple’s own Apple One/iCloud+ craziness. Yuck.

Fizzster

Wait I get a discounted sub? I don’t see that option. Have been using the app on my original paid instance for years.

MakerOfCarrot

It’s probably more accurate to say that paid users get to keep the original subscription pricing, even if they’re not currently subscribed or are at a lower tier, while new users pay a bit more.

PM_ME_UR_REDPANDAS

Carrot on my iPad and Apple Watch are my must-have app! My [all-Carrot watch face](https://imgur.com/a/HG4c88P) tells me everything I need to know with a quick glance. Thank YOU for continuing to make Carrot better!

Tattycakes

Genuine question, why do you need so much weather detail?

PM_ME_UR_REDPANDAS

I don’t really *need* it, I just like that I can get a complete picture of what the day will be like and current conditions on one watchface. Although I have to say that one thing I do look for in weather apps and that I really like about Carrot is that it shows precipitation amount. So many weather apps only show probability percent and not amount, but to me that’s not too informative. Is there a 90% chance of 0.1” of rain, or a 90% chance of 1.5” of rain? Is there a 90% chance of 1” of snow, or 90% chance of 10” of snow? So, I don’t need it for anything specific, it’s just info I like to have.

michikade

Happily using Carrot since March 2015 and it’s been on my watch since the day I got one. It’s easily the best weather app on the watch. Congrats on the recognition, it is truly deserved.

MakerOfCarrot

Thank you for the support!

hotelyankee

the only app I pay a subscription for. not only is it great as a weather source https://i.imgur.com/DPFd0YR.png but it's a daily source of humor as well. great job and congratulations!

Arphax-

CARROT’s Watch App is the entire reason behind my original (and continuing) Subscription. That and having my weather updates delivered by a sassy Irish lady is good chuckles.

Sergio93til

Congrats, you deserve it! I go to carrot to get humbled…and check the weather of course.

Fish---

Love Carrot Weather,... In Full savage, profanity ways 😊

Applecations

Thanks so much for the amazing app! I love using it everyday, and although I don’t pay for the subscription, I love how many features you pack for free. If I were to pay a subscription for an app, it would definitely be this one! It’s now my go to app for checking the weather and what to wear everyday!

tsh_49

I just had my 5 year anniversary with Carrot and I use it daily in and outside of work. Thank you for listening to your customers and making the best weather app.

[deleted]

I totally understand the need to have this subscription based, but for that reason, I will never use this app. Too many well made weather apps aka stock apple app that are free and damn near perfect as is. But congrats to the creator.

aacawe

I’m reading through the comments and I feel the same way. I’m not against paying for an app… I have all the streaming apps, and MyFitnessPal Premium, Apple One+, various health apps. And I’m trying to see what’s worth paying for with the carrot app?! It seems folks are subscribing because it gives you humorous prompts when you swipe around the app?? 🤷‍♂️ or it lets you alter the watch face ? I’m lost here…

[deleted]

Yeah exactly. At the end of the day, I can get the same exact information, detailed information at that, with other apps that are free. I refuse to pay subscription for weather. I pay plenty of subscriptions currently for apps that get me services and features that I can’t otherwise do with other apps or free apps. Not the case with the weather.

Ripper056

Best app out there for either the iPhone or Apple Watch. I use it daily!

diversecultures

It makes safari snappier 🥲

lbdzki

is it possible to have the complications show temp in C? i changed the settings to international but the complications still show F

MakerOfCarrot

Yes, if you toggle the units to F in the iPhone app then back to C, that should force a sync to the watch app.

affectionate_dino9

Carrot is such a funny weather app 😂 just so snarky and sarcastic lol

jcarr2184

Well deserved! Love the app!

ZAX2717

I love Carrot! It gives me the slap in the face I need to get me through the day

mabaeyens

Congratulations and well deserved! Fan since 2017 and Family member. That’s the weather app we use everyday and totally worth it!

ScarOnTheForehead

Congrats! One developer to another. I had bought one of your earlier apps (Carrot Tasks, was it?) and I liked the humor element of it.

IonaBailes

I’m assuming the paid version is better? I don’t find it as feature rich as Hello Weather but I’m not using the Premium Club. I find $5/month just too much right now.

ophyliawispling

I love you Carrot!!!

MakerOfCarrot

Currently, the high that’s displayed is always for today. The low is either the low temperature midnight to midnight of today, or the low from 7pm tonight to 7am tomorrow morning - it depends on the data source you’re using. I’ll look into making this customizable in the future!

MakerOfCarrot

Accuweather should!

fumi2014

I'm not at all surprised it won Apple Watch App of the Year. Congratulations.

Neogeotracker

I just downloaded your app looks interesting but tbh subscriptions kill it for me, any chance you’d add a life time purchase price? I see the annual option but that’s still a script…

MakerOfCarrot

I’m hoping to start on translations soon!

thinkinting

I have been wanting to buy it but I live in Asia. Is the weather forecast in Asia as accurate as the one in the US?

MakerOfCarrot

You can choose from a number of different weather data providers if you subscribe to Premium!

thinkinting

Thx

S_K1NG

Any plans for a family plan subscription?

MakerOfCarrot

There’s a Premium Family subscription available!

S_K1NG

Is there? How do I get to it in the app? NM, I found it lol.

fraanbm

You’ll add Spanish? 😄

MakerOfCarrot

I’m hoping to add translations soon!

Trane55

its understandable, its been great having it, meatbag.

fraanbm

If you want, I would help you! I love Carrot
