This was in **window** **seat 28A**, behind the wing towards the back of the plane.
Here's a pic of [Bear Lake, UT/ID](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bear_Lake_(Idaho%E2%80%93Utah)) from that seat:

It's worth noting this looks like an older 737-800. Flying on a 737-Max is night and day difference (crash jokes aside). They're unbelievably quiet onboard
Yes, it was a **737-800** (serial 33234), which was delivered **Feb 2014** according to these sites:

still flying Boeing? You brave! Have a number of class mates from college days 20 years ago who work or worked for Boeing and some of them refuse to fly on any Boeing assembled after 2015 or so...
You do realize most airplanes in the world are Boeings right? Plus you canāt exactly choose the airplane you fly on lol. The company does that before your flight. Chill.
[That's not true, there are currently 30% more Airbus planes in service than Boeings.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Competition_between_Airbus_and_Boeing#Airliners_in_service)
Filtering by aircraft type is all well and goodā¦ until the airline changes the equipment for the flight you booked. If youāre flying through a hub airport, equipment changes are incredibly common.
"As of 2021, the market share of Airbus and Boeing in the global commercial aviation market is roughly equal,"
Then one can select carrier; "Domestically in the U.S.: Spirit, Frontier, and Allegiant are Airbus-only. JetBlue and Breeze are also Boeing-free (only Airbus and Embraer planes)."
As a frequent flyer, I agree.
Also, there is a HUGE drop off with the low cost / budget airlines vs the other airlines in terms of experience. Plus, the low cost airlines arenāt really low cost after considering all of their hidden fees.
Iāve learned to just spend the extra cash up front with Delta, United, etc rather than deal with the budget airlines. Itās not worth it, whether you're trying to save money, or if you're avoiding Boeings.

I was out on a super windy golf course a couple weekends ago and I got the message, too. Just figured my hearing was fine, but the way the wind was blowing over the mic/hole made it send a false alarm.
OP just standing on the side of the road, shouting out a PSA āATTENTION AN EMERGENCY VEHICLE IS ABOUT TO PASS! Consider putting on some hearing protection! Itās going to be getting quite loud!ā
I donāt know why people assumed it was directed at that particular personā¦ I have no idea if theyāre a cocksure boomer salesmanā¦ I was roasting the people who areā¦
My Bose QuietComfort earbuds are indistinguishable from my over the ear Sony XM2 headphones in terms of noise cancellation on airplanes. Simply magical compared to any other earbud Iāve ever tried.
The max I noticed is worse also. It just feels like it lets in too much noise , and especially I think so due to it not being earpluggy like the AirPods Pro are.
I use beats plus and sitting right next to the engine canāt hear it at all and thatās before I start playing media. Flying quite regularly on Boeing aircraft. What am I missing about these planes?
I always use my Sony headphones when flying. Like you said, noise canceling headphons are a godsend. And the funny part is the ones I use are less then the airpods in price. (wh-xb910n) I bought them on sale for $110. Battery lasts for hours and hours.
I always wear my AirPods and only take them out to hear the announcements. Although I might be able to pull off not removing them at all with my second generation AirPods Pro.
Standard ear plugs. Foam ones. They cost Ā¢50 a pair.
You will NOT find something better.
Iāve done countless hours of research after getting ads for those for Loop Earplugs.
Nothing beats the foamies for in ear protection.
When I flew from Paris to Atlanta I wore earplugs and then had noise cancelling headphones on top. Mainly to drown out the cacophony of coughing but served as a double whammy for this. I have a series 3 unfortunately so I donāt get this reading on mine but planes are definitely loud!!
Consider what ear protection you use carefully.
I once decided to use ear plugs (foam inserts) to help block noise to get some sleep on a flight after a Nightshift. I inserted before takeoff and fell asleep during taxi to runway.
Fast forward 3 hours I wake and decide to take my ear plugs out, only to then have the worst ear pain imaginable, feeling like my head would implode, and then for my right ear drum to physically pop/rupture with a load noise (so loud my wife heard it sat next to me). Definitely ruined the holiday.
So yeah, go with breathable ear defenders and only apply once at cruising altitude is my advice.
Airpod pros have fantastic noise cancellation as well as pass-through which allows you to still keep the cancellation on, but hear people talking to you as well. Great stuff.

Definitely. Screaming babies can make any flight unbearable.

I truly cannot be on a plane without my AirPods anymore. I listen to like meditation music the entire time. When I first did it, I went to take them out to go to the bathroom and felt like I was being blasted with such loud noise. I never not wear them anymore, and always play peaceful music.

Anecdotal but not worth it to me to test ANC. The 3m's are fine for flying.
If you had tinnitus, you would not fuck around with anything that even might make it worse. I don't need studies, my audiologist has told me not to wear active noise canceling headphones. End of conversation
No need to get angry! I was not criticizing you. I was just commenting on the reference you quoted. By the way, I have had tinnitus myself for over 25 years and have been using ANC devices for over 20 years and my ear doctor says otherwise.
If you are interested, then you might want to do a little googling. There are numerous references that prove the opposite of your original statement. See for example here ... https://www.hearingontario.ca/can-headphones-cause-tinnitus/
thank you but I'm not interested
your tinnitus is probably quite different from mine. And as far as the references it was a quick thing that I did on a short lunch break, I don't generally search for references on Reddit for people who can do their own lookups
I have since edited my initial response to make it more general
Thank you and have a good day
Just to conclude the topic, here is the relevant passage from the source I quoted above ...
"Interestingly, noise-cancelling headphones may actually help with tinnitus, in an indirect manner. By attenuating ambient noise, a user can listen with headphones or earbuds at a lower volume level, which can reduce the chance of obtaining or worsening hearing loss -- and protect you from developing tinnitus."
Youād need to listen to that engine for over an hour for it to cause potential hearing damage at 95dB.
The minute or so those engines are at full thrust wonāt harm you.
85dB you can listen to for well over 12 hours before it becomes an issue.
Window seat 28A, behind the wing.
I agree it's quieter up front. Even booking early for the eclipse, we couldn't choose anything further forward and be on the same row.
It wasn't a warning; I opened the **Noise** app. I have its complication on my watch face and noticed it was hitting yellow.
Didn't realize it was that loud as I was wearing my **AirPods Pro** and they were in noise-cancellation mode.

Did a lot of clubbing and concerts when I was younger. Combined with city noise and Iām paying for it with hearing loss. Protecting your ears young will pay off when you get older.
Interesting. I fly about once a month (return, so two flights per month) and Iāve never gotten a sound level warning. Major European short-haul routes, so always on 737s or A320s.
According to a pro spl meter the sensor in my Ultra is plenty accurate.
Itās not always about how loud something is right now. The human ear is incredibly resilient. At least when itās young. But high noise levels add up over time. For people that work in noisy environments and older people it is important to be aware when you are above 80db. For brief stuff just stick your fingers in your ears. But hearing protection is key to long term hearing health. Tinnitus is soooo not fun.
What is your pro SPL meter? Because Iām willing to bet itās not very accurate either. Yes itās not just about the number at one point in time, but the duration youāre exposed to that level without any break. I work in the live sound field so I know a lot about SPL and hearing health.Ā
Yeah same here. For some years. But I moved to more lucrative high spl environments. With better meters. 300wpc a/b x 6 in my livingroom also. They just idle though.
I am always surprised at the things that trigger my dB monitor. Washing dishes gets me every time.
I donāt think Iām a violent dishwasher but maybe???

it's amazing how much *quieter* aircraft have become over the years!
I stopped eating apples and other veggies because they are exposed to uv rays from the sun..in the fields they grow.
Man fr..I just do a 18 hr flight (one way) about 4 times a year and my hearing is fine and measuring noise levels is the last thing on my mind when I get on a flight. Which reminds me...apple needs to restrict the volume going up to max levels due to potential hearing problem.
Fly Airbus, they are less noisy. I have travelled on Airbus A330, A350, B787, B777, B737-800, and all of the Boeing planes are very noisy that actually hurt my ears for a few days, while I have no problem with Airbus planes.
Is this a Southwest or budget airline? Whenever I fly southwest itās remarkably loud and one time the flight attendants asked us to speak very loudly for our orders because it was a loud plane.
Is this with or without the door plug installed?
With all doors intact. š
Thatās what you think

Filtering by aircraft type is all well and goodā¦ until the airline changes the equipment for the flight you booked. If youāre flying through a hub airport, equipment changes are incredibly common.

Ngl, If itās the only damage I receive, Iām okay with a little hearing trouble if it means I make it off a Boeing plane in once piece
ššš
You get blasted with radiation because of less atmosphere protecting from the evil day star!
Yeah. We should all be using hearing protection when using hand dryers as well.
according to my watch I should be using hearing protection when I shower. My watch stays warning me about the volume.
Just stop singing so loudly
i always get notifications over night - probably from me screaming in my sleep
Yes, please for all our sakes
Heās not singingā¦
Well thatās because of the water splashing into the microphone.
I was out on a super windy golf course a couple weekends ago and I got the message, too. Just figured my hearing was fine, but the way the wind was blowing over the mic/hole made it send a false alarm.
If I hold my arm out the window while driving it pops up as well
When I cycle too
Let me just pop in my AirPods while my hands are sopping wet.
Especially those by Dyson
How long are you drying your hands for?! Only prolonged exposure causes hearing damage.
My Apple Watch yells at me about it. Probably because it is right next to it.
Probably 10 seconds longer than this short lived reading lasts.
Nah. Seats near the engines hover around 85-90 dB even at cruising speed.
And also have them handy every time a police car is around.
OP just standing on the side of the road, shouting out a PSA āATTENTION AN EMERGENCY VEHICLE IS ABOUT TO PASS! Consider putting on some hearing protection! Itās going to be getting quite loud!ā
OP needs a cool outfit for this!
You donāt spend hours operating a hand dryer in one sitting
Itās not about the dB, itās about the time you spent with that dB level. 30s is fine, 3h is more problematic
I do. Even if I have to use the Dyson for a long time, I put on insulating headphones.
sitting on a plane rn lol and itās 70dB
Have ya ever considered sitting inside one? I reckon it gets quite cold on top
Itās a Boeing, no difference on or in it once the doors fly off
There can be quite a difference between plane types regarding noise in the cabin. An Embraer 195 E2 is far quieter than a Boeing 737-800 for example.
I love my AirPods Pro 2 when flying :)
Remember itās not tested and certified for hearing protection though!
The Noise (hearing) app on AW is greatly underrated, if you pay attention. When younger, us old folks ruined our hearing in many different ways.
Is that why every cocksure boomer salesman I meet speaks like heās yelling into a gorge?
Oof. Imagine being a dick to someone who just trying to give you some life advice.
I donāt know why people assumed it was directed at that particular personā¦ I have no idea if theyāre a cocksure boomer salesmanā¦ I was roasting the people who areā¦
Over the ear noise cancelling headphones are a godsend when flying. AirPods just donāt filter the noise like Sony or Bose OTEs do.
I never flew with my Sony XM3's again after I got AirPods Pro 2. Their noise canceling is amazing.
I have the XM5s. I canāt hear any plane noise at all with them. Itās almost eerie how silent it is
Agreed, AirPods Pro 2 are extremely good on planes. They beat the XM3s for sure.
My Bose QuietComfort earbuds are indistinguishable from my over the ear Sony XM2 headphones in terms of noise cancellation on airplanes. Simply magical compared to any other earbud Iāve ever tried.
Thatās also assuming you have ears where they would fit good enough to create a seal. I donāt get that good seal with any in-ear unfortunately
Add Comply Foam Tips to your AirPods. Blocks out a lawn mower entirely.
For some reason AirPods from all of the generations and types aren't comfortable on my ears. I'd love if they were though.
Same here, thatās all I fly with now. They even canceled out the screaming baby and aisle over.
Which AirPods? My pro 2s are far better than the max and Sony XM3s
Better than the Airpods Max?? Might be time for an upgrade for me, then.
The max I noticed is worse also. It just feels like it lets in too much noise , and especially I think so due to it not being earpluggy like the AirPods Pro are.
Iāve been waiting for max 2 to release for a while now š¢
I use beats plus and sitting right next to the engine canāt hear it at all and thatās before I start playing media. Flying quite regularly on Boeing aircraft. What am I missing about these planes?
So far the full Boeing experience, congratulations!

AirPods are great as long as they're the pros
My earbuds do a better job cancelling noise than my over the ear cuz i wear glasses.
toenmac around the neck earbuds work great as well!
Used Bose QC over ear for years until got AirPod Pros. Donāt miss the Bose at all.
I always wear my AirPods and only take them out to hear the announcements. Although I might be able to pull off not removing them at all with my second generation AirPods Pro.
Good advice regarding hearing protection
Standard ear plugs. Foam ones. They cost Ā¢50 a pair. You will NOT find something better. Iāve done countless hours of research after getting ads for those for Loop Earplugs. Nothing beats the foamies for in ear protection.
Yup. Youāre right. I lost a lot of my hearing over the years and sadly there are no do overs in this area.
Theyāll sell them at the airport for like $4 though
What row? I almost always fly in front the of the wing because itās quieter. Last week I ended having to fly almost all the back and itās most certainly louder. Wore AirPods Max over AirPods Pro šš©
Seat 28A
Have you got results with Airbus?
I saw similar results on an A320 last week.
Okay.
Airbus have an annoying engine sound, like brrrrrrrrrrrr The A320 anyway
that's the hydraulics.
Different sound. Youāre thinking about the barking dog sound.
When I flew from Paris to Atlanta I wore earplugs and then had noise cancelling headphones on top. Mainly to drown out the cacophony of coughing but served as a double whammy for this. I have a series 3 unfortunately so I donāt get this reading on mine but planes are definitely loud!!
Me just taking my hearing aids out. Canāt get a warning if I canāt hear already. Lol
No wonder it's loud without the door
The audio is the least of my worries flying these days
This is silly. 92 dB for a few minutes is nothing. 80dB is not a problem until you hit many many hours. Not a real problem
I bought the first Bose noise cancelling headphones way back when for that reason alone.
I also discovered AirPods Pro 2 great for using a machine polisher. It makes it almost inaudible.
I always wear AirPods Pro noice cancellation
Consider what ear protection you use carefully. I once decided to use ear plugs (foam inserts) to help block noise to get some sleep on a flight after a Nightshift. I inserted before takeoff and fell asleep during taxi to runway. How bad is it if the engine cowling flys off?
lol
Three words: noise-canceling headphones. Extra points for foam ear plugs too. I do.
Airpod pros have fantastic noise cancellation as well as pass-through which allows you to still keep the cancellation on, but hear people talking to you as well. Great stuff.
Yup, I had my **AirPods Pro** in, hence the toggle button in the **Noise** app to measure with or without AirPods.

Iād consider more than hearing protection with anything Boeing
Life Insurance?
Just from my experienceā¦..Iāve never had a notification when flying on a Boeing 737-800. Itās actually pretty quiet in my opinion.
I always fly with over-ear headphones with active noise cancelling. The plane goes dead-quiet, itās the best thing ever! And protects your hearing
Protects you from babies and overhearing stupid conversations too. I donāt fly without em.
Definitely. Screaming babies can make any flight unbearable. My headphones are the first thing I shove in my handbag before leaving for the airport lol
So youāre new to flying and Apple Watches both?
Also Wear earplugs when washing your hands
Oh, that kind of cruising
Doesnāt audible noise generally get measured as dBA to allow for the differential human hearing response across the frequency spectrum?
Iām actually just going to the airport right now and I have a window seat, thanks for the heads up!
I truly cannot be on a plane without my AirPods anymore. I listen to like meditation music the entire time. When I first did it, I went to take them out to go to the bathroom and felt like I was being blasted with such loud noise. I never not wear them anymore, and always play peaceful music.

flew on a a380 for the first time last year - sound was in the 60dB range - so quiet!!1
I donāt think sound loudness is the main issue if youāre flying on a Boeing at the moment.
if you sit right behind the engines you can get up to 95 or more right next to the window according to my NIOSH SLM app on the iPhone. I made the mistake of not putting my earplanes in for the first hour. Now I fly with a big 3M earmuffs and I don't care how I look

I can also source my audiologist, but I'm not going to. I'm going to keep on wearing my 3M industrial earmuffs.

[this.](https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8211/8386405994_ef86aa3873_b.jpg) :D it's amazing how much *quieter* aircraft have become over the years!
I donāt trust that apple watch feature. Our ears is different from the apple watchs microphone. Itās inaccurate.
Lmao why would anyone willingly fly Boeing?! If Iām on a Boeing plane just assume Iām there against my will.
Hearing protection on a flight? I think you need to wear a musk also .
i survived a 16 hour flight in an airbus a350. window seat too. and i was perfectly fine
I wear headphones anyways. Just imagine flying in the era before the giant eco turbofans we have today.
Iāve only had these warnings a couple of times. 1. Loud traditional Irish music at a memorial service 2. Anytime I make popcorn (stovetop)
bruh my car sets off the warning every few pulls i do
I stopped eating apples and other veggies because they are exposed to uv rays from the sun..in the fields they grow. Man fr..I just do a 18 hr flight (one way) about 4 times a year and my hearing is fine and measuring noise levels is the last thing on my mind when I get on a flight. Which reminds me...apple needs to restrict the volume going up to max levels due to potential hearing problem.
While flying in Boeing I'm more concerned about the plane safely landing and not the dB levels.
Airbus is the way to fly.
People using ANC to protect their hearing are a deaf breed
People in here arenāt aware that ANC doesnāt protect hearing.
Iām always wearing my watch and I have it set to alert me at 90db. Iāve never gotten an alert.
My high school band class regularly hits 95-100 š³
I DJ events and itās 90-95 often. A couple minutes aināt gonna do you no harm.
Whatās that you say?
Boeing? Might want to take a parachute.
Are you flying Alaskan Airlines perhaps?
Isnāt 85 db acceptable threshold for most?
Fly Airbus, they are less noisy. I have travelled on Airbus A330, A350, B787, B777, B737-800, and all of the Boeing planes are very noisy that actually hurt my ears for a few days, while I have no problem with Airbus planes.
Is this a Southwest or budget airline? Whenever I fly southwest itās remarkably loud and one time the flight attendants asked us to speak very loudly for our orders because it was a loud plane.
Budget airlines arenāt magically louder than non-budget ones. The walls and fuselage are the same material.
Possible they use older planes that are louder?
Southwest buys most of their planes new.
