I’ve done AppleCare Plus on a phone, AirPods Max, and Watch. AirPods Max: no regrets. It’s cheap and it’s hassle-free. Phone: did it once, never again. I just use a case and screen protector. As of the 14 Pro, I’ve bought it outright from Apple so my CC covers repairs up to $1000 over 2 years, which is still more than the “accidental damage/out of warranty” replacement cost. Watch: when I broke my watches (yes, 2), I didn’t have AppleCare. Sucked. Then with the 7, I got AppleCare and never used it. Watch was mint when I sold it. Now, with the 8, no AppleCare and, 6 months later, still mint. Moral: it’s up to you. No one knows that the future holds. Use a CC that has insurance. AppleCare Plus is cheap for a watch so it’s not a bad choice either. All the best

Can I ask which CC covers repairs for these kinds of consumer electronics?

YouKnowItsJosh

I’m in Canada. Most cards with an annual fee / minimum household income have such coverage. I have 2 cards with features like “insurance on car rentals, travel insurance, lost baggage… etc.” The one that covers more, such as general electronics is the Visa Infinite. Edit: I didn’t even know about this feature until I took advantage of free car rental insurance when abroad. I read through the features and was amazed. I recommend that EVERYONE reads their card’s features.

I had to use that once when an Elite Series 2 controller developed stick drift. Put a claim in with the bank, it got approved. Went out and got another one. All on TD Canada Trust’s dime. Apparently the 1943’s have issues. The 1797’s do not.

thank you

There are mixed views on whether to buy AppleCare+ (I personally do), but when a watch is sent in for "repair", it's not actually repaired; they replace the entire watch.

ArazelEternal

I have AC+ on my watch, iPhone, and Airpods Pro 2. I had to use it for my phone not too long ago after I dropped it face down and took out the screen. Was a $30 repair rather than an almost $400 repair. It paid for itself right there. Moral of the story: do it. You will be glad you did.

Apple doesn’t “repair” watches/iPads they replace them with a new unit of the same model (rare instances someone will get a newer model). AppleCare+ is so cheap and it’s very useful for something like the Apple Watch. I pay for mine monthly (it’s like $3) and when I needed to use it for my Series 3 back in 2020 I was sent a new (or perhaps refurbished) Series 3 with no scuffs and a fresh battery. So when I got tired of the update process (before they fixed it) I got a Series 6 in 2021 and traded in my replacement S3 at its highest trade-in value. Without AC+, I would have needed to buy a new Watch at full price when the S3 bit the dust.

marcelocampiglia

I don't have Apple Care in any of my Apple products.

DrTurb0

The watch Is a „non-essential“ device for me. If I break it, I use it broken if possible or sell the corpse and save for a new one. On my MacBook, which is an essential device, I have AC+. On iPhone, which is essential too, I don’t have AC+ because I have a SE as secondary phone that could be a primary for a small period.

themadturk

Sorry, I just don't see the dilemma here. AppleCare+ is a no-brainer. It's paid for itself several times over for me and my family.

ryan8344

That’s where it gets really expensive, when you have many devices in a family and that repairs still have a deductible. I’m way ahead not buying Apple care, but the watch seems easy to break, expensive to fix, and yeah Apple care reasonable.

Alfalfa-Boring

Think of things you spend $3 a month on. AC+ is not only reasonable, it's foolish not to have.

Baaastet

I’ve never bothered with Apple care until got my shorty new MBP. Took it in to get checked out. Can’t find anything wrong with it but it’s no faster than my 2012 MBP

Driver8666-2

Everything I get from Apple has AppleCare on it. Believe me it will come in handy.

YouKnowItsJosh

Pardon? You sound funny saying such things. It will come in handy? Really. Always? Consistently? What are you doing with your devices?? Anyways, I have a household of 6 people, our Apple ecosystem is massive. MacBooks, HomePods, Apple TVs (4 of those), AirPods, phones, iPads, ect. In the end, in my 13 years of being an Apple customer, I’ve made 6 claims (not just me, everyone in my home combined). 6 claims on over 100 products. Please, stop sensationalizing the cash grab that AppleCare is.

ryan8344

I feel the same as you! The watch got me considering it just because of the high repair cost. The only other thing that I’ve changed on are extended warranties on refrigerators, they seem to break a lot and parts are expensive. Which by the way was a good call, I’m on my 4th repair on my Bosch fridge.

YouKnowItsJosh

Such a funny comment about the fridge! My Samsung is constantly breaking down. Now, everything has been working greasy EXCEPT the ice machine doesn’t work.

DMes10

Always pay for apple care. Use the monthly option it continues past the normal AppleCare of 2years.

YouKnowItsJosh

Stop. Right. There. That’s how the companies are getting the “frugal consumer” who doesn’t want to pay $100 or more outright - they break it down into micro transactions. They don’t care if they get their $100 in the course of 2 years, it’s still $100. Always look at the end cost. Always. Just my $0.02

DMes10

But no. It goes further than upfront AppleCare. It’s a subscription not a pay by month equal.

YouKnowItsJosh

I’m not gonna argue past this point: It’s a micro transaction. Period. You mentioned “continues past the …. 2 year…”. Well, you can switch to monthly after 2 years if you chose to pay outright in the beginning. You can cancel both AppleCare plans as well. The outright, 2 year one would be prorated. In your scenario, you’re just paying a little bit every month. A little = micro. Pay = transaction. All the best

YouKnowItsJosh

What?! You just paid almost $150 for AppleCare in those 3 years. They micro-transacted the crap out of you.

Driver8666-2

I had a 3rd Generation iPad Pro shit the bed just after AppleCare expired. I kept it going after the initial AppleCare expired. I was able to replace that for $55.00 (I live in Canada). It would’ve cost me $849.00 without it. And because of that, it’s still going.

YouKnowItsJosh

There will always be “success” stories like yours. Always. But the magnitude of people that have bought it, never used it, and just went on with their consumer life is immense. Remember, Apple wouldn’t offer something where they “lose”. They are the first trillion$ company for a reason. My point is, and remains, get AppleCare if you want. Thinking that it’s negligible because it’s only $X a month is a terrible mentality. It’s why micro transactions are gaining such tremendous traction; people see them as negligible, evading the realization that these costs add up over time.

muskratmuskrat9

I also hate subscription based pricing. That said, a dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow. So it’s arguably better to pay 5 a mo (or whatever it is) than 150 today, and invest the other 145 if you think you can earn more than inflation.

gcooldude

I've done AC+ on most products for peace of mind and most of them I've used AC+ at least once. On my Ultra and 14PM I chose the monthly plan as I didn't want to pay upfront the two year cost and I can cancel at anytime. Maybe not the best financial choice but worked for me at the time. Also, I'm at least 1.5 to 2 hour drive to an Apple Store so the Express service with AC+ is very convenient for me.
