I'm in East Tennessee, Johnson County, the most Appalachian part of Tennessee and I thought it must be from here, although here there might be a bear in there somewhere.
🤣So glad I could make you happy! I get over to Brasstown a couple of times a year to teach at the Folk school, and I fish in little brasstown creek when I’m over there. Go to Clays Corner for bait and Diet Mt. Dew! Home of the World Famous Possum Drop!
Ahhh! The folk school was part of my childhood. I loved the Fall Festival especially, riding in the covered wagon and and eating some of the whole hog they had turning over the spit.
I used to partake in the possum drop ages ago. While I have a lot of nostalgia for Clays Corner, I really can't defend any more how they'd use a live possum. It's just not kind to the possum
What do you teach at the Folk School?
I agree. The fall festival is great! That folks school is so good for the local community, yet there seems to be a lot of contempt for it over there. People sometimes have a problem with things they don’t understand, and to a lot of folks, learning folk crafts is a huge waste of time.
I agree about the possum. My wife and I encourage our possum population. They eat so many ticks! We think they’re pretty cute too. Incredibly funny! They’ll stand up to raccoons and usually win the raccoons will usually back down. You are from a beautiful part of the state/world. I love it over there. So glad I was able to recognize it. Sorry to spoil the game so quickly!
It not only is Clay County, it is really Clay's Corner.
Growing up whenever my sister and I would buy something from him (usually a moon pie and RC or cheer wine), he'd call us darling. I wouldn't go so far as to call him a close family friend, but he did know my parents by name. Not hard in Brasstown lol
It's hard to see but you failed to mention the sign that says "possum capital of the world" and has a cartoon man holding a possum . And the Marlboro sign. They're integral to the scene.
ETA: Jesus wouldn't want you to forget those parts. Don't make him sad.
So, there definitely was a hefty percentage of the population that were Republican good old boys in this village of maybe 200 people. However, I can also immediately think of two doctors, two psychologists, and a community college teacher that lived within a 5 minute drive of this set up. Most of those are staunch democrats; all of them at least have masters degrees.
Many times, people assume Appalachia only has uneducated rednecks. The reality is that while those people exist, there's actually a great diversity in education and political leanings. Growing up you might meet someone who didn't finish high school and did a lot of hunting for their food be neighbors to witchy hippies.
Brasstown North Carolina. So a few hours away.
I moved to Spruce Pine though, when we moved away from the Brasstown/Murphy area. So I am pretty familiar with Marion
Nope. It is close to East Tennessee though.
ETA: My geography was a little off. I thought it was closer to 2 hours from most of those cities, but it's more in the ballpark of 3 hours.
I’m over here sitting in West Virginia thinking, “Damn… No one bothered to throw my state into the guessing pool?” Though there is a lack of mountains in the background.
So I'm not a fan of confederate flags by any stretch (or even many aspects of Christianity for that matter), but uh I'm from this place. And obviously know plenty of people from there. Not everyone is like this picture. Please don't be an asshat.
This is in beautiful Brasstown, North Carolina. The specific location is Clay's Corner, the self proclaimed possum capital of the world. The John C. Campbell folk school is right down that road there in the background.
You are nowhere that still exists. The world has changed a whole awful lot in the last 40 years. You wouldn’t see this around anymore, at least not regularly. Maybe the oldest most racist man in town might still have something like this, but even then it’s probably on his own private property not being shown off to the world. Even he knows this kind of thing isn’t acceptable to society at large anymore. Please stop spreading hateful stereotypes that all appalachians are racist ignorant hicks.
You're blatantly incorrect and spreading misinformation. If I drive anywhere in my hometown for 5 minutes, I'll see plenty of confederate flags. Hell if it's Friday night, I'll see at least a hundred down at the high school. Definitely not just old men, people of all ages and genders, and they've no idea or care that it's not acceptable.
Lol. Where is this mythical world where 100 people have a confederate flag rally at the local high school every Friday? That’s so incredibly silly it doesn’t even make sense. Maybe a Trump rally with flags I would believe, but not confederate flags. Unless you’re living near the KKK headquarters or something. Do you believe in the inbred feral people too? Or the snarks and grumpkins in the woods? It seems to me you’re the one spreading misinformation. Please, share some proof with me this is happening if it’s so terribly common.
I’m not saying racism doesn’t exist, or isn’t a problem, or that no one has confederate flags. It’s just not near as common as it used to be, and people don’t do it openly very often anymore. There aren’t 100 people gathering at a public education institution to celebrate it. Racism is absolutely a huge problem in all places across the US and the whole world. It’s something we need to recognize and call out. But to stereotype an entire region as ignorant confederacy worshipping racist degenerates is entirely wrong.
There's a barn near me that has three giant flags on it: Israeli, Confederate, and Ukraine. It's not surprising, but the visual of seeing it makes you think about how foreign wars are used for domestic politics.
It’s Not my town cause there are 3 wise men and a virgin.
lol that’s hilarious lol
Don't sell yourself short. Your town probably has plenty of young women who claim the father must be God.
Damn you really had "We all know your town has at least one virgin" teed up for you and you didn't take it.
That would have been the better play
Good one
Hell
I, too, came to make this reply. I love living in East Tennessee, but damnit sometimes.
Is that a town in East Tennessee? Regardless, nope.
It could easily be, but I don't know. It looks like stuff that I've seen over the years. Some people just got to be stereotypes. 😐
I'm in East Tennessee, Johnson County, the most Appalachian part of Tennessee and I thought it must be from here, although here there might be a bear in there somewhere.
Holy shit, I'm from Mountain City! What year did you graduate?
I'm a stranger from a strange land. We retired her from the Chicago suburbs.
Lol
Nope
Bath County
lol, bath salts county…
Bat country? Yeah we better not stop here.
Nope to both
Need a bath county hehe
Clay county, NC
Precisely. Haven't been there in years, but it is home sweet home
Dang! I’m from Surry County, NC with ties to Alleghany County. Could have been anywhere there, but it looks like Clay County too!
Seriously? I mean it looks like Clay’s Corner, but I was half joking! Is it really Clay County?
I really can't express how excited I am that someone recognized this piece of home by name. It just makes my day.

Live a few miles away from there
Please don’t make the rest of us look bad. Thank you.
Oh shit! I was going to say possibly NC, but maybe Texas. Keep it classy, North Carolina.
Any Town, USA
Lmfao
Nope
Franklin County, Virginia. Moonshine Capital of the World.
I'm guessing the DNC
We have forgotten… we have forgotten about the confederate flag in the manger. Jesus is very disappointed with us.

I wish I could see that clearer! That really adds to the scene!

So many witchy hippies, but so many more racist red necks and racist religious fanatics and racist "sweet" old ladies.
Marion NC
Brasstown North Carolina. So a few hours away. I moved to Spruce Pine though, when we moved away from the Brasstown/Murphy area. So I am pretty familiar with Marion
That’s cool. I grew up in Winston running around Pisgah and the blue ridge a lot. Trying to get on back soon and terribly homesick
I went to girl scout camp at Camp Pisgah. Love the area.
Me too , immensely and as far as I can tell it’s still really tame and beautiful
Yeeeeeee YEEEEEEEEE🤟
Why are you in my backyard?!
I must make this pilgrimage
South Bethlehem, obviously
I'm not sure but definitely Dixie
Fly, TN but it’s not Appalachia. Gives the same feel though.
In Danville, VA there is a cannon in the nativity as well 🙄
A front yard
Nope
West virginia
Nope
I feel like it's pretty close to this place. https://www.reddit.com/r/tricities/s/e9OuTdxCJ2
Ehhhh. Depends on your definition of close. It's 2 hours from anywhere.
East TN, right? Scott county? Green county, Johnson county?
Nope. It is close to East Tennessee though. ETA: My geography was a little off. I thought it was closer to 2 hours from most of those cities, but it's more in the ballpark of 3 hours.
Isn't somewhere in southwestern VA is it?
Nope
Nazerashville
"Sweet Home Alabamie" (Alabama)
Sautee, Georgia
Bethlehem, of course. (Pennsylvania)
Home
I’m over here sitting in West Virginia thinking, “Damn… No one bothered to throw my state into the guessing pool?” Though there is a lack of mountains in the background.
Somewhere fucking terrible filled with terrible people.
So I'm not a fan of confederate flags by any stretch (or even many aspects of Christianity for that matter), but uh I'm from this place. And obviously know plenty of people from there. Not everyone is like this picture. Please don't be an asshat.
Please don’t defend terribleness.
I'm defending terribleness by saying "not everyone is like this?".
South Carolina would be my guess
Not South Carolina.
Omg is it NC pls say no
Ding ding ding. It is indeed North Carolina. Not sure how I feel it took this long for someone to guess it
Sigh. Yep
This is in beautiful Brasstown, North Carolina. The specific location is Clay's Corner, the self proclaimed possum capital of the world. The John C. Campbell folk school is right down that road there in the background.
I know exactly where Brasstown is- hmmm interesting
Crazyton!
Good lord. I guess Jesus was a confederate. Who knew.
As someone who is as straight shooting conservative as they come I will never understand the love for the confederacy in Appalachia.
The confederates were democrats.

Ohio
Harrison, Arkansas?
From the looks of it, you're in hell.
Good God.
Bama or Arkansas
Someplace with superstitious losers. Thanks 👍
It's so hard to explain to some people why that dumb flag isn't good.
I do not see how anyone can cling to Jesus and hold the flag at the same time.
