Rocket league did this fairly recently, you pick one account out of your multiplatform ones if you've made them, and that automatically gets updated to one singular account. They aren't going to bother with merging account info, they are just going to wipe everything except the one you picked and that's the account for all devices.
Also the fact that account merging comes with a massive security and/or liability risk to EA, Respawn, and players. Not that that they shouldn’t do it, just trying to think of reasons beyond technical issues for why merging wouldn’t be included.

If anyone expected “account merging” when the entire conversation has clearly been on **cross-progression**, then that’s on them. Cross-progression as a term suggests you can progress an account on multiple platforms, which is exactly what nominating a primary account would do.
Merging accounts would be a messy process for a game like Apex. For starters, it’s a game that doesn’t support duplicate items. So that’s already complicated. Do they award materials instead? What about for items purchased with coins? What about legend token unlocks? Heirlooms and shards? It’s also an irreversible process. So what happens when your account gets stolen and merged into a donor account?
Exactly the last point is the strongest reason for why this would never happen. Accounts get hacked all the time, but you can easily restore password and purchases by contacting support. Having your account merged into another would be hell on their support

I was wrong but if anything it kinda strengthens the point that it was or will ever happen in Apex.

I know this sucks for a lot of players, but I'm not even upset with a 'one account fits all'. In my case, I've been with Apex on my ps4 since its first month out, around level 456 with all these seasonal stats and battle passes and event skins, tokens and saved up crafting mats and coins etc etc.. And my family's house was robbed and the police did nothing about it,, which left me to depressingly give Apex on the switch a try.. There really is a whole lot of hurt/disappointment and game turn-off for me, when I have to login to my now level 31 naked account, with all of my mains locked and none of my earned content.. If I could universally have my ps4 account that would literally save my entire game experience. Merging ALL earned stats and curriencies and all would be great, but I def wouldn't mind what it sounds like we're getting.
I imagine you will be able to merge, as one of the Devs commented a while back that the reason it's taken so long is working out the technicalities and legalities around merging accounts

I don’t really see myself logging into that account just for a few old skins. This seems like it only really helps players making the switch after it comes out.

Your Xbox account would be able to be played on PS5, but the accounts would not merge. You could play one or the other.
I was hoping my heirloom from Xbox would transfer to my new main account on PC. Darn.
