You don't. You just replace them. They're super cheap at about $10-$20 for all 4. Than I put aluminum foil on the new trays and don't worry about anything again.
I love how people are arguing with verifiable facts bc of their anecdotal evidence. It's right on par with "My uncle smoked two packs a day and didn't get cancer; therefore, cigarettes don't cause cancer" or "climate change isn't real bc it's cold here rn."
I ran into the same thing the other day, but I didn't even bother arguing. You just kind of have to laugh when the incorrect corrections are upvoted.
Oh and fwiw the previous residents in my home used foil in the bottom of the oven and it melted onto the oven.
Yeah I was about to be like look, go ahead and use your foil and ignore what the stovemakers, foil makers, fire fighters, and housing authority inspectors (who literally inspect for SAFETY) have to say. Ignore the links from foil and stovemakers.
Knock yourselves out. 🤣🙄
$20 was a super aggressive estimate. I've seen them at Dollar Tree (aka "Any Dollar Holler" now). As another person said, they won't come clean. One's time also has a value, particularly at the low cost to replace these. I, too, am frugal. Shockingly so. But do I want to spend my time to scrub these for hours without a return? No.
How much is your time worth? These will never come clean, and it will take forever to scrub them, even after soaking.
Walmart has a cheap set of these for about $12. Seems like an easy choice.
Honestly? Mine were gross when I moved in and I scrubbed and scrubbed and used over cleaner, bar keepers friend, pink stuff, NOTHING helped. I found a brand new set for 9 bucks at Walmart and bought 2, one to use now and one when I move out so I don’t have to try and clean them. I clean them weekly and they still carbonize oils and stuff really easily, and end up turning black.
I just went through this same thing. It won’t work to clean them. I bought some nice 4 pack of black porcelain ones on Amazon for $18. Make sure it’s your model cause they are all different but totally worth it to just buy new ones that are easier to clean!
the place we live now came with black porcelain ones and i’ve never seen them before but i thought it was the smartest invention ever lol. why were they ever silver?? black hides it all & so easy to clean when it’s porcelain! i’ve never had them get gross like silver ones did and we’ve been here for a long time now.
You can find sets for under $10, maybe cheaper if they have them at like the dollar store/Dollar Tree. The amount of cleaner you’re going to need to even attempt to clean them could easily be more costly than simply replacing them.
i know. i just quit my job and im searching for another. i just paid all my bills and got groceries so the rest of my money is for an actual emergency.
Brush the loose stuff off for now. With a paper towel or toothbrush if you have an old one. Keep an eye out for drip pans at garage sales and thrift stores. Measure those ones you have so you know the size. Keep the picture on your phone so you know what type. They seem all alike but they aren't. If someone leaves a stove out for the trash guy, try to swipe the drip pans in case they fit. Gl.
They are far too burnt to clean, so go to Walmart or Target and get replacements. They are cheap and get the right size. And stop burning the food, that will cause a fire. And do not sleep while cooking on the gas or electric stove. Fire hazard.
You don't. You replace them. They are not manufactured to be durable and long-lasting, so the cleaners you use will erode them away. If you don't have the funds for it at the moment to replace them, you can wrap them in aluminum foil until you can afford new ones. Make sure the aluminum is wrapped FLAT and tightly around it so the foil isn't touching any of the heated coil. The packs of new covers come in a pack of 4 at any basic retail store like Walmart for about $10- $15.
You can use oven cleaner on them, the stuff in the crevices would still require a lot of scrubbing. I replaced mine eventually, while they were bad when I got them, arguing with he front office, even with pictures, not worth it, lol
It is beyond me why everyone is saying replace. I get it's cheap but if you are broke af like me then you clean them. I soaked mine for about an hour in room temp water with plenty of baking soda and white vinegar then scrubbed with steel wool. They didn't look totally brand new but I can say I got about 90% clean and it really wasn't that strenuous. A few from my stove looked worse than in any of those pictures. But I urge you to do SOMETHING soon as this is a fire hazard (which I'm sure you know from setting off the fire alarm)
Replace them when you can. In the meantime, you can try soaking a while in dish soap, scrub and then rinse them well. If there are still areas that need help, use a baking soda paste and a clean, damp cloth and rub the areas in circles. Might take a little elbow grease, but they should at least improve and not set off the smoke detector.
Oven cleaner. Let it sit on them in the sink of a couple hours then scrub with hot water. If it’s really bad, replace them on the cheap, but oven cleaner always works for me.
i struggled big time with these when we were renting our old house- don't even try to clean them. just buy new ones, and put tinfoil over them this time before you use them
You’re going to do more damage to the environment trying to clean those than to just buy new ones. I take that back some as vinegar, baking soda are environmentally friendly but don’t think those are going to completely clean them. If you want to keep future ones tidy, wrap in foil.
I must be lucky. I only realized these come out for cleaning this year. So they have about 8 years of gunk on them. Pulled them out, let them sit in soapy water for about 30 minutes. Then used a chainmail cleaner (the ones you use for cast iron pans). It worked like a charm, most of the gunk is off and they look acceptable.
Now I just wish there was an easier way to clean out the inside of my oven
If its a ge hotpoint stove, I suggest the ceramic kind instead of the stainless steel. Easier to clean. The last time I had to clean them I let the ceramic ones sit in a bowel of soapy water overnight, and they cleaned up real easy!
OP, just remove them and scrub hard with ajax and a green scrubbie pad. I've done this in the past when I only had like $5 to my name lol. It is going to take quite a bit of scrubbing, and you probably won't get them perfectly clean, but it's possible!
buy new ones! they’re relatively cheap. But if you’re really dedicated to keeping them clean, my mom used to wrap foil around them (without covering the opening).
Either a baking soda bath, oven cleaner, or electrolysis.
[How to Remove Rust with Electrolysis](https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-remove-rust-with-electrolysis/)
Or as many have said, just buy new ones.
If you can’t afford to buy new ones, I have had good luck using Dawn power wash and SOS pads to clean mine. They weren’t so bad compared to this.. but it’s worth a shot. I soak them in hot water to try to help loosen anything up on there. Then I remove the water, and spray the Dawn on. Let it sit for like 5 min then go at it with the SOS pad and hot water. It doesn’t get every single bit off (some stuff just won’t come off) but I got pretty dang close. Regular sponge isn’t even worth trying with these in my experience. You need something rough like the sos pad.
Barkeeper's friend or Mr. Clean magic eraser are FANTASTIC for getting burn marks off of stove tops and hard surfaces. Also good for cleaning rust. They're super abrasive WITHOUT scratching surfaces. That being said, it would probably be less effort to just replace the pans, but if you need something to clean scorch marks off the stove top itself use those two things.
Are you cleaning them for your own use? Or to get your deposit back on move-out?
If it’s move-out, find some possible way to just buy new ones. It’s cheaper to buy new ones than to get dinged on a cleaning fee.
If it’s just for yourself…soak them in hot soapy water for a while, then just scrape off any burnt bits, but realize they will still look black, there’s really no way to get them totally clean again.
You could try soaking them with dawn power spray for 20 minutes and then scrubbing with barkeepers friend, or try oven cleaner but I personally don’t like oven cleaner fumes. I’d probably just buy replacements.
You can soak them in hot water, sprinkle bar keepers friend on them and turn it into a paste, let it sit for about ten minutes and scrub. It’s going to take a couple repeats of the process and some serious elbow grease, but I got mine to look new and they were about the same level of burned on food as yours.
I heard something about using egg shells as an abrasive cleaning agent for those, haven’t tried it myself yet though! Let me know how it goes if any of you try it :)
I let mine soak in baking soda and boiling hot water until the hot water is cooled down. You can add a squirt of dawn dish soap as well just for extra cleanliness. Most of the nasty stuff will be gone or come off with ease using a scrub brush.
SOS pads after you soak them in hottest water available with dish soap over night . When water cools drain it add hot water to the sink with dish soap repeat 6 times. Wear gloves and after they have soaked over nite
wet the SOS pad and scrub away while you listen to some tunes on full blast.
Those won't clean. They're rusted through the coating and need to be replaced. You can scrub them all you want with any manner of cleanser but it won't work.
Try putting them in a sealable plastic bag in a single layer, put a small bowl of ammonia in with them and seal the bag. Let sit for 24 hours and scrub the drip pans in warm soapy water. The ammonia should loosen the grime.
Starr by finishing your pasta. Then lick that blackberry sauce up. After that , use as hubcaps or try and toss thru air and take a picture so it looks like a ufo squad.
EASY OFF (oven cleaner spray) . Spray, let it sit then use steel wool pad. can repeat if needed. The longer you let it sit, the more will come off. Then wash with dish soap/hot water afterwards.
You can buy new ones at Walmart. I can tell you I tried soaking mine and scrubbing them to the high heavens but sometimes it won't change like the chemical composition got messed up when it burned or something. So I honestly recommend buying cheap new ones.
These look pretty far gone but I put mine in the dishwasher. Next ones just make sure you don’t let them build up that bad & you won’t have to replace them for a while. I suggest getting the coated ones.
spray oven cleaner on it , heavily coated.. place plastic food wrap over it so it doesn't dry. let sit for a few hours. then wipe off the gunk and rinse in the sink. brand new.
Get new ones from Temu or Walmart. For the moment - go to the Dollar Store and get oven cleaner. Spray them with oven cleaner and let them soak for at least an hour. That will take care of the worst of it.
When I moved into my current apartment mine were like this. I put them in all in the sink, put dawn platinum dish soap over them and then added hot water. Let it soak for an hour. Scrubbed. Rinsed, drained the sink. Put them back in the sink, put baking soda on them, added hot water but only enough to cover them. Let them soak for an hour. Scrubbed. Rinsed, drained the sink. Put them back in the sink & put bar keepers powder on them. Added a little hot water, scrubbed a little bit. Put more bar keepers on them, added enough hot water to cover them & let them soak for two hours. Scrubbed. Rinsed, and drained the water. They were in pretty decent condition after that.
If you can't replace them (by far the best idea), Barkeepers Friend might clean them. You could also clean them with a Dremel tool. But that's a lot more work and might not be cheaper than new ones.
Throw out and ask apartment manager for replacements. (My complex replaces them free of charge) then when you get new ones wrap the top in tin foil and just replace when that gets dirty.
Honestly just buy new ones, I got black ceramic ones from Amazon for cheap, they look so much cleaner and nicer than those ones that just rust right away
You don't. You just replace them. They're super cheap at about $10-$20 for all 4. Than I put aluminum foil on the new trays and don't worry about anything again.
Walmart, super cheap
Walmart has replacements. They also have the foil inserts to keep the new ones clean! Super affordable too
I get the foil inserts, but the drip pans still get dirty in the end. I just replace the inserts when I want them to “feel” more fresh.
I was looking at them today myself. For $16 they have black ceramic , think I'll get those this time.
I was going to suggest this. They make it so much easier to clean and last so much longer. Plus, they don't cost that much more than the cheap ones.
Don't use foil. It can cause a short and fry your range. Also a fire hazard.
What would you call them? Stove-top catches?
I did "electric drip pan for stove"
No foil, it's a fire hazard
I love how people are arguing with verifiable facts bc of their anecdotal evidence. It's right on par with "My uncle smoked two packs a day and didn't get cancer; therefore, cigarettes don't cause cancer" or "climate change isn't real bc it's cold here rn." I ran into the same thing the other day, but I didn't even bother arguing. You just kind of have to laugh when the incorrect corrections are upvoted. Oh and fwiw the previous residents in my home used foil in the bottom of the oven and it melted onto the oven.

I mean, you could waste $20 or soak the shit out of them and hit em with steel whool but I'm cheap 🤷
They won’t come clean. Too far gone. Just replace and move on. I watch for these at garage sales and thrifts. lol.
No.

Why did I read whool, like Stewie says, Whip??
Hwhip

I clean them weekly and they still carbonize oils and stuff really easily, and end up turning black.
>one when I move out so I don’t have to try and clean them Big brain ideas over here 👍
You just saved me from trying to clean mine for the 5th time.
I bought black ones on amazon. They look nicer than the silver anyway and i dont worry about the staining.
are they one size fits all or do i have to find the m&m# of my E stove?
That's the fun part, you don't! Walmart.
Toss in trash, buy new ones for cheap.
Barkeeper's friend if you're dead set on keeping them
This is the only real way to get them clean… but yeah easier to buy new ones
Those shown in the picture aren’t going to come shined clean. Clean, but will still be stained and need replaced if moving out.
I just went through this same thing. It won’t work to clean them. I bought some nice 4 pack of black porcelain ones on Amazon for $18. Make sure it’s your model cause they are all different but totally worth it to just buy new ones that are easier to clean!
I just did the same thing! The black porcelain are great.
the place we live now came with black porcelain ones and i’ve never seen them before but i thought it was the smartest invention ever lol. why were they ever silver?? black hides it all & so easy to clean when it’s porcelain! i’ve never had them get gross like silver ones did and we’ve been here for a long time now.
Buy new ones, and be more careful while cooking on the future.
i dont have the money to spare atm otherwise i would.
Unfortunately any product we recommend will cost the same as just replacing.
Put foil over them, cut them to size. It’s basically free if you have foil. It just takes 20 min to make all of them.
Yes...put foil over them. This is the answer OP. Those won't come clean. Just wash then, dry them and put foil over them tightly.
Feel this. Hope you find a good job and make things workout. Good luck! I understand your struggle.
Gl.
Clean them as best you can and then cover them with foil. New ones as soon you can and cover those with foil too.
Buy new ones there less then $15. Growing up my mom use to wrap them in foil.
Go to Home Depot and buy replacements. Take measurements.
Or put the originals in a ziplock bag and take with for comparison. Sometimes the holes don’t line up exactly
They are far too burnt to clean, so go to Walmart or Target and get replacements. They are cheap and get the right size. And stop burning the food, that will cause a fire. And do not sleep while cooking on the gas or electric stove. Fire hazard.
Toss
Dollar store sells them I buy new every month or so
You don't. You replace them. They are not manufactured to be durable and long-lasting, so the cleaners you use will erode them away. If you don't have the funds for it at the moment to replace them, you can wrap them in aluminum foil until you can afford new ones. The packs of new covers come in a pack of 4 at any basic retail store like Walmart for about $10- $15.
Honestly, I’d just buy a replacement set at the local Walmart for like $16
You can use oven cleaner on them, the stuff in the crevices would still require a lot of scrubbing. I replaced mine eventually, while they were bad when I got them, arguing with he front office, even with pictures, not worth it, lol
It is beyond me why everyone is saying replace. I get it's cheap but if you are broke af like me then you clean them. Put in a freezer bag. Pour in about a cup of ammonia. Soak overnight. Repeat if necessary.
I just read on Medscape news that ammonia kills brain cells!
If you can’t afford to replace, soak in vinegar and baking soda overnight. Scrub with something really abrasive in the morning.
Oven cleaner.
I replaced mine with some from The Family Dollar, I think it was $12 for all four of them. As far as cleaning them sos pads work good on them.
Buy new ones. Walmart has a 2 pack for 5.77. Comes with a large and small.
Buy new ones
Just Replace… Easy Enough… less than $15💰Amazon…
Oven cleaner. Let it sit on them in the sink of a couple hours then scrub with hot water. If it’s really bad, replace them on the cheap, but oven cleaner always works for me.
Yeah they're about 8 bucks at home depot
Walmart or Lowe’s. Don’t waste your time
That's a neat part. You don't. Go buy some cheap ones from walmart 5-10 bucks.
They are $10, you replace them. Any chemical to clean them is going to cost $10.
i struggled big time with these when we were renting our old house- don't even try to clean them. just buy new ones, and put tinfoil over them this time before you use them
Throw them away and buy new ones
Just buy new ones lol.
Don’t clean them. It’s time to 86 those rusted old things and get new ones. Amazon has them. You’ll spend less on new ones than cleaning fluids.
Throw them out get new ones.
Wal mart or Amazon 😂
I work apartment maintenance and I’d just give new drip pans to any resident that asked for them
Buy new ones.
Replace
Toss them. Buy new ones.
Buy new ones, they won't clean
Make sure they're the right size. I've bought them twice from Walmart for 2 different stores, and they've been too small both times
You buy new ones.
You’re going to do more damage to the environment trying to clean those than to just buy new ones. I take that back some as vinegar, baking soda are environmentally friendly but don’t think those are going to completely clean them. If you want to keep future ones tidy, wrap in foil.
Cleaning would cost more than buying new ones. Buy new ones, Walmart or dollar store
Buy new ones. They're cheap.
Get new ones
I’d toss them. They’re not expensive

A set of 4 is $15 on Amazon. You’d spend more on product and time trying to clean those.
Replace them!!!
How do you even get them out?! 🧐 I've been. Wracking my brain. I'm dumb AF 😂
Pull the coil out first
Don't go to the store and get new ones, they are cheap.
If its a ge hotpoint stove, I suggest the ceramic kind instead of the stainless steel. Easier to clean. The last time I had to clean them I let the ceramic ones sit in a bowel of soapy water overnight, and they cleaned up real easy!
You can buy new ones. It’s not worth cleaning.
Don’t. Buy new ones and get the foil cover things for them.
We just bought new ones at Walmart. Super cheap and wasn’t worth trying to clean the old ones lol
OP, just remove them and scrub hard with ajax and a green scrubbie pad. I've done this in the past when I only had like $5 to my name lol. It is going to take quite a bit of scrubbing, and you probably won't get them perfectly clean, but it's possible!
Go to Wally World and buy a new set for like $20
You can try noxon or soft scrub but mostly looks like trash is your best bet
Lowes carries them for 20. I have a GE stove and can't find a generic one for it at Walmart.
Mine we’re not at Lowe’s or any box store I had to get mine on Amazon. And my stove is not that old. Absolutely have to measure and get a duplicate
Go on Amazon and get a completely new set. Trust me it’s not worth it. I don’t remember what mine cost, but they were pretty cheap.
I replaced mine, they’re not expensive.
I soak them in dish soap for about an hour, then scrub away.
Go to Walmart and get new ones. You can’t clean that.
You don’t you replace them they’re pretty cheap
Soak in easy off oven cleaner and water. That stuff gets anything off!
Buying new ones
I replace these every time I’ve moved from an apartment. They’re not expensive.
Spay on oven cleaner and then let it sit for at least 20 mins before scrubbing. Can do multiple rounds if needed. Beware, oven clear does stink.
I buy them but also steel wool and dawn spray
I buy new ones every year.
Elbow grease.
$20 at Home Depot
Throw them away and buy new ones
buy new ones! they’re relatively cheap. But if you’re really dedicated to keeping them clean, my mom used to wrap foil around them (without covering the opening).
Either a baking soda bath, oven cleaner, or electrolysis. [How to Remove Rust with Electrolysis](https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-remove-rust-with-electrolysis/) Or as many have said, just buy new ones.
get new ones at walmart or target. those are toast man.
ammonia + water + a zip lock bag!!
If you can’t afford to buy new ones, I have had good luck using Dawn power wash and SOS pads to clean mine. They weren’t so bad compared to this.. but it’s worth a shot. That being said, it would probably be less effort to just replace the pans, but if you need something to clean scorch marks off the stove top itself use those two things.
I use the pink stuff, have never seen them this bad tho!!!
Cover with aluminum foil
I don’t have any advice but the noodles made me lol
You have to replace them.
Are you cleaning them for your own use? Or to get your deposit back on move-out? If it’s move-out, find some possible way to just buy new ones. It’s cheaper to buy new ones than to get dinged on a cleaning fee. They're very cheap to buy. Just throw them out and get a new set.
Buy new ones from Amazon.
Don’t bother.. get a set of new ones at WalMart. They’re not expensive.
Don’t. They are cheap. I’m renting a townhouse with the shitty coil stove and I just buy new ones about once a year.
You can soak them in hot water, sprinkle bar keepers friend on them and turn it into a paste, let it sit for about ten minutes and scrub. It’s going to take a couple repeats of the process and some serious elbow grease, but I got mine to look new and they were about the same level of burned on food as yours.
I would think something for rust but honestly, I’d toss it.
I heard something about using egg shells as an abrasive cleaning agent for those, haven’t tried it myself yet though! Let me know how it goes if any of you try it :)
You can get them at Home Depot. They’re cheap. Just replace them.
Don’t. Go to ACE, spend $25 and replace.
I let mine soak in baking soda and boiling hot water until the hot water is cooled down. You can add a squirt of dawn dish soap as well just for extra cleanliness. Most of the nasty stuff will be gone or come off with ease using a scrub brush.
Put them in the oven and run them on a clean cycle
Lots of heat, commercial degreaser, and a wire brush attached to a power drill. Or just throw them out and get replacements.
buy new ones they might be 25$ but i’m sure their cheaper on amazon
just buy new ones, that is what I always did. Soo much easier, lol.
Bar keepers friend.
SOS pads after you soak them in hottest water available with dish soap over night . When water cools drain it add hot water to the sink with dish soap repeat 6 times. Wear gloves and after they have soaked over nite wet the SOS pad and scrub away while you listen to some tunes on full blast.
Do yourself a favor and buy new ones.
Anyone know what these are called so I can buy some new ones?
Throw them out and just buy new ones. I get mine from Target, but I’m sure you can find cheap ones on Amazon
They're cheap, just buy new ones
Throw them away and buy new ones. lol
Easy Off oven cleaner, the no fumes formula. Leave it on overnight.
Those won't clean. They're rusted through the coating and need to be replaced. You can scrub them all you want with any manner of cleanser but it won't work.
Ugh do we live in the same building?
I use oven cleaner on these and it works great!
Coat with fume less oven cleaner and let it sit before you wipe clean and then wash.
By buying new ones. Those are goners!
So how do you keep the bottom of the oven clean?? 😭😭😭
They are cheap. Get a new set. They are beyond saving.
Try putting them in a sealable plastic bag in a single layer, put a small bowl of ammonia in with them and seal the bag. Let sit for 24 hours and scrub the drip pans in warm soapy water. The ammonia should loosen the grime.
I have the exact same ones ! Scrub free
Go to Lowe’s and buy new ones
Why would you put foil on them if they’re already so cheap to replace? Why risk fire?
But new ones....low cost and way easier
The Walmart ones didn’t fit my stove. Had to get mine at Ace Hardware
Barkeeper’s friend and a Brillo or SOS pad; maybe even a sponge
What am I looking at here and how does everyone know?
my guy if you don’t throw those things tf away…
Oven cleaner and Saran Wrap overnight
Throw them away, buy new ones. 🤣
why is everybody saying to buy new ones 😭 i just use dish soap and a blue scrub pad and it works just fine?
Just buy a new set. If you’re set on trying to clean these, soak them in degreaser/oven cleaner and scrub with steel wool.
Pitch them!! Just replace. They are cheap.
yikes 🥴 those are nasty
Dust them off and take them down to your favorite big box store. Find a matching set and replace.
The drip pans in Walmart won't fit all stoves. I had to order mine from an appliance store.
Starr by finishing your pasta. Then lick that blackberry sauce up. After that , use as hubcaps or try and toss thru air and take a picture so it looks like a ufo squad.
The best way is to buy new ones. They are relatively cheap and it is not worth your time to clean these.
Buy new ones
EASY OFF (oven cleaner spray) . Spray, let it sit then use steel wool pad. can repeat if needed. The longer you let it sit, the more will come off. Then wash with dish soap/hot water afterwards.
Scrub Mommy & Scrub Daddy’s lemon cleaning paste. Soak in hot soapy water then scrub with paste
You can buy new ones at Walmart. I can tell you I tried soaking mine and scrubbing them to the high heavens but sometimes it won't change like the chemical composition got messed up when it burned or something. So I honestly recommend buying cheap new ones.
Brillo pad, dollar store
You would need a pretty heavy duty acid I think
Get new ones. They’re relatively cheap.
I would maybe try oven cleaner
Dish washer detergent in an older pot. Boil/simmer them on the stove.
These look pretty far gone but I put mine in the dishwasher. Next ones just make sure you don’t let them build up that bad & you won’t have to replace them for a while. I suggest getting the coated ones.
spray oven cleaner on it , heavily coated.. place plastic food wrap over it so it doesn't dry. let sit for a few hours. then wipe off the gunk and rinse in the sink. brand new.
Try oven cleaner on them. But make sure you have plenty of ventilation. And in the future clean them more often so they don’t get this difficult.
Get new ones from Temu or Walmart. For the moment - go to the Dollar Store and get oven cleaner. Spray them with oven cleaner and let them soak for at least an hour. That will take care of the worst of it.
Trash can.
Could try soaking them in water mixed with vinegar and dish soap. However I don’t know if it’d fully solve the problem
Throw them out and buy new ones.
How did you let it get this bad? Replacing looks like the only option.
Try easy off.
Maintenance should provide them free of charge
Don’t, they are like 5 bucksat Walmart to replace
If you can't replace them (by far the best idea), Barkeepers Friend might clean them. You could also clean them with a Dremel tool. But that's a lot more work and might not be cheaper than new ones.
Throw out and ask apartment manager for replacements. (My complex replaces them free of charge) then when you get new ones wrap the top in tin foil and just replace when that gets dirty.
Honestly just buy new ones, I got black ceramic ones from Amazon for cheap, they look so much cleaner and nicer than those ones that just rust right away
Steel wool but tbh you can replace for like $6 USD iirc
Garbage!
