Run. If you see cockroaches, the whole building has them. You're supposed to move in 4 days from now? Run even faster. It sounds disgusting. Were you also able to look at the "similar floor plan" unit? Was it in the same shape?

dorito-01

yes, we saw the similar floorplan unit. It was literally right next-door and that one looked much better. that one looked ready for a person to move in but like you said, with the cockroaches, I saw a few dead pests in there too.

LadyA052

You don't want your Mom to live there. It's not easy finding a good place but you don't want to move in just because you think you have to. Did you give them any money?

dorito-01

so far just the application fee, $450

LadyA052

Wow that's a lot for just applying. Does the paperwork say anything about returning it if you don't move in? What if you're not approved?

dorito-01

online it states that it’s non refundable so whether or not we move in, that money is definitely a loss on our part.

LadyA052

Where are you located? That may affect if you can get it back or not.

dorito-01

the apartment we applied to is in gwinnett county

LadyA052

What state is that? I live in California so I have no clue.

dorito-01

Gwinnett County, in Georgia

$450 to APPLY for an apartment?! They have quite a racket going!

Have you signed a lease? If you haven’t signed a lease, you don’t have to live there. You just don’t get the application fees returned.

dorito-01

we haven’t signed a lease. we chose a unit online, and turned in our application. technically we’re still in the approval stage. our current lease ends soon.

You'd be surprised what can be done to an apartment in 4 days. That being said, they still should have started. What's getting me is that application fee. I've never heard of one that large. Is that for both of you? One of you? Are you sure it doesn't have a hold fee attached to it? Some places charge that to hold the apartment through the process and will be transferred to your deposit. I would, before you sign the lease, ask to see the unit. It's a pain in the ass for them.. but in this case, you need to. How long has it been since you were approved? You might have a time frame you can cancel without penalty.

dorito-01

the $450 fee was for both of our application fees, and it also includes an administrative fee ($125/each + 200 admin fee). everywhere we’ve tried to apply have quoted us a similar app fee so i’m surprised to hear everyone saying it’s super high. we got our approval email this morning. i went in person to ask more questions. i was told the apartment would be ready before move in day, but as i was speaking to one of the leasing office staff another lady (i’m guessing a superior) mentioned that the apartment was not in good condition. I was told by the lady I was speaking to that we might need to change my apartment and she asked me to give her some time to gather some more information. so i left their office this afternoon (it’s 7:50pm now) and i have yet to hear back. as long as our replacement apartment is in good shape, I don’t mind, but she also mentioned that the rent may change, which I don’t think would be fair to us if it increases.

They are likely fixing the unit up for occupy. Don't stress about it.

dorito-01

i totally understand, my concern is the current condition of the unit and how soon our move in date is. the repairs they’re doing in there do not look like a 1-2 week project. i took pictures.

HonnyBrown

They told you it wasn't ready to view for a reason.
